Living from Our Greatest Experience

Of the many experiences we have in our lifetimes, some have unusual meaning for us. These singular experiences can come spontaneously without having done anything unusual to trigger them while at other times they may come from some special preparation or exercise we’ve been involved with. As an example, at some point in life some have had the experience of feeling at one with everything in nature or with everything in the universe. Or we may have had an experience of being very centered in who we are, and experienced a level of confidence that transcended our petty worries and fears so that we felt whole and complete within ourselves. Or we may have experienced a feeling of love within our hearts that expanded out freely to all living things and created a feeling of complete fulfillment.

These experiences can also come to us as the result of deliberate exercises such as during or after meditation, or yoga, or other similar activities and frequently come to those who practice Reiki. People often describe these experiences taking place during a Reiki session, either giving or receiving or taking place in a Reiki class during an attunement or guided meditation. During these experiences we often contemplate life or some aspect of it and find ourselves having feelings of joy, harmony, peace love and many other amazingly wonderful feelings. These are often present as foundation feelings that seem to be the ambient energy on which everything in life exists.

During these experiences our awareness expands or extends up to higher dimensions and we experience life in ways we didn’t realize were possible. It often feels like waking up from a deep sleep, or coming out of a fog. New understanding about important aspects of life becomes obvious and we are aware of life in ways that are far more meaningful than what we usually experience. During these times, our everyday worries and concerns seem undeveloped and childish in comparison and we’re able to see the world and our place in it to contain tremendous freedom and exuberant joy.

These are often called peak experiences and are the most authentic experiences we can have. Yet for most they are fleeting. They last only a short time and then they’re gone. Yet the memory persists and often we have a longing for them as we know innately that they connect us more strongly with the essence of life itself.

These experiences offer special value for us and if we accept their challenge, they have the power to greatly alter our lives in extraordinary ways. The challenge they offer is to allow them to guide our lives based on the values they present to us. Take a moment to think about what this means. If you’ve had peak experiences similar to those described above, think about what it would be like to live from this place and to base all the important decisions in your life on what you experienced.

By doing this, you’ll be living from your most meaningful self; living from the basis of your greatest experience. You’ll also be nurturing these experiences and like seeds, they’ll grow so their energy and their state of consciousness will become more and more a part of your everyday life. This will give you greater joy, enthusiasm, and peace as you live your life from the place of your most authentic self! Because you’ll be living more directly from the essence of life, your creativity will flourish making it easier to redesign your life in healthier ways. You’ll find it easy to try new things, to meet and enjoy being with new people and to transform your life!

Take the time right now to drift back into one of your peak experiences. Use the distant symbol and send Reiki to this experience and allow its energy to flow all around you and through you so you become one with the experience. Dwell in this experience a while and then consider how it might affect your life right now. Could it influence decisions you are contemplating or awaken you to choices about your life you hadn’t considered?

As you embark on this path, and begin living more fully from your most meaningful experience, you’ll be living the greatest adventure life has to offer and you’ll be fulfilling its greatest purpose. Is this the kind of life you’d like to have? The choice is yours, the door is open, and you can begin now.

Giving Reiki to Horses

I treated my first horse with Reiki soon after my Master attunement as a favor to the owner, who was concerned that her 27-year-old gelding had developed fairly serious allergic reactions to certain biting insects. I was introduced to Major in his stable and found myself suddenly on my own with the horse looking intently at me. He did not like my camcorder case and tried to take it from me. That was duly handed through the door, after which he frisked me from head to feet. Satisfied I was not another veterinarian come to give an injection, he stood back but looked interested.

I spent some time simply talking to him and stroking him and as Reiki began to flow I scanned to search for “hotspots.” His back and hips were hottest, so I worked there, gradually moving up to his heart and head. The change in Major was amazing. Within 20 minutes he was so relaxed that he was swaying slightly, eyes almost closed. Occasionally he would look to see what I was doing. Finally, I reached his head, which he eventually rested over my right shoulder as I reached up and placed one hand at the base of his skull and the other on his forehead. To finish, I swept along his body, nose to tail, once on each side, and he became alert again. I was surprised to find that almost two hours had elapsed. As the owner joined us, Major returned to me and placed his forehead against my chest, leaning gently on me and closing his eyes. He remained like this for a few minutes before going out into the field.

After this wonderful experience I obtained a Reiki for Horses manual, which explained more about chakra locations and gave valuable advice on horse body language and temperament (see bibliography below). The most rewarding case I have had to date was a thoroughbred Arab stallion, a racehorse owned by a group of businessmen . He was called “Acceleration,” but rarely did so. Mostly he liked to be in Neutral or Park. Always very fast in practice and training, he was somehow unable to repeat this in a race. He caused a lot of amusement during a televised race when, as the trap wires lifted, he trotted forward a few feet and began to graze happily at the side of the track. The rider was an agitated blur bouncing up and down trying to make him run.

It took six sessions 7 to 10 days apart to completely clear whatever it was that was stopping him. Despite his flighty temperament, once introduced to me and another practitioner who worked with me , Acceleration always appeared to enjoy his sessions. He was very gentle and affectionate to us, gently nuzzling and nibbling our hair or clothes—much to the surprise of the stable staff and trainer. As with Major, he also liked to stand and have his head held gently at the end of a session. During the course of therapy, Acceleration steadily improved his performance, and after his fifth session he won his first race.

Treating a horse with Reiki can be an amazing experience. If you have not yet given Reiki to a horse, I would encourage you to try it. As with human clients, when treating a horse, it is important to carry out a thorough initial consultation to check the history and gain as much information as possible. You may have to get permission from a veterinary surgeon to treat the horse. Horses are large, powerful animals—always make safety your priority. Pay attention to what the owner or trainer tells you and be alert for signs of trouble. I always check escape routes when I’m in a stall with a horse. If I need to treat a horse on my own, I ask that the owner or someone knowledgeable about THIS horse be present or within sight. As a matter of courtesy and my own safety, I always comply with any request made by the horse that I should leave.

There are many Web sites offering good advice regarding the safe handling of horses and how to read horse body language. If you are not used to being around horses, ask for advice, read up on the basics, and follow the rules. Initially, I was afraid of being in the same stall as a horse, but I have developed a deep love and respect for these sensitive and wonderful animals. They are deeply intuitive and can sense your intention to help and will often respond in a wonderfully moving way.

It is a profound experience to see such a large animal respond in the way I have described, simply by gently touching it and allowing the Reiki energy to flow through your hands. For me, it was a clear and quite unexpected demonstration of the power of Reiki. Thanks to the horses, I am sure I have become a more effective therapist with my human clients.

Charging a Fee Always Necessary

In western Reiki there is the assumption made by some that you should always receive payment or some form of energy exchange for a Reiki treatment. Many believe that if you don’t do this, problems are going to occur. Reiki is unusual in the healing field in this respect as other methods of healing don’t have this requirement. And in fact some healing schools and individuals have the opposite idea stating that you should never charge for healing.

Because of this, many have wondered where this idea came from and if it is valid. Research indicates that Mrs. Takata was the one who added this rule to her training. And because of her story about Usui sensei and his problems with the beggars it’s believed that he was the one who created it. Also, according to another of her stories, Hayashi sensei also recommended that one always charge money for Reiki sessions.

However, research indicates that this doesn’t seem to be the case. In October, 2001, I traveled to Kyoto, Japan along with a number of other Reiki practitioners to take Reiki I&II training from Mrs. Yamaguchi and her son Tadao. Mrs. Yamaguchi had been a student of Hayashi sensei’s, having assisted him in many of his trainings which were held at her home when she was a young woman.

In the training we received from her in Kyoto, we learned many interesting things including a ritual called Reiki Kohan in which we each received a blessing from Mrs. Yamaguchi whose purpose was to increase the effectiveness of our Reiki. We were also told by her that Hayashi sensei did not require payment for Reiki sessions at his clinic. His treatments were free as they were intended for people too poor to afford regular medical care. This contradicts the idea that one must always require payment or something in return for Reiki sessions.

We are not sure why Mrs. Takata added the requirement for payment, but if Hayashi sensei didn't practice this way, then it can be safely assumed that the idea that one must require payment or an energy exchange for Reiki sessions isn’t part of the Usui system. Therefore, Reiki is no different than anything else in this respect. You have the right to charge any fee you decide you’d like to charge or to can give Reiki sessions free if that’s what you feel is right.

Behcet's Disease Healed with Reiki
I had an incurable devastating illness called Behcet's Disease. My symptoms were painful and life shattering including losing my eye sight. Always intuitive I knew there was a reason for my experiencing this 'whole' body illness. I intuitively knew that I would be able to heal myself. I became an ordained minister through studying Teleios Technique with Dr. Jim Cox then I began certification in Reiki. The night of the Reiki I attunement I had a dream about a white light that surrounded my body and entered through the top of my head (crown chakra). This white light renewed and restored every cell in my body. That was November 15, 1996. I have not had a symptom of Behcet's since that day. In fact, I am now 60 but I look younger than I did in 1996. By the way, Behcet’s Disease is described as "No Hope - No Cure". Billie Watkins, R.M.T., M.Div., Minister

Reiki Heals Depression and Anxiety
After my marriage ended and many other life changes occurred together in a short period of time I experienced a breakdown due to depression and anxiety. I turned to God for help as my children were suffering in reflection to my health. I was asked to assist a mother and disabled child during my spare time. I agreed and she informed me she was Reiki-trained and actively used it on her son and it greatly improved his strength. She also offered treatment to me for free so I could experience it. She put on relaxing music and I lied down on a Reiki table. I closed my eyes and tried to relax. I experienced a triangle of lights with my eyes closed, tingling in most areas, and the heat from her hands. On reaching my stomach area I had and uncomfortable hard feeling. She told me that it was mostly emotions and to relax. After she spent some time there the feeling disappeared - my depression and anxiety were gone! I thank God for bringing me to a healer. Reiki and How I Went From Psychosis to Spirituality
I recall the sensory experiences of psychosis quite clearly, the visions and the voices that tumbled through my tormented mind. I recall the multitude of labels that were attached to me - schizophrenia, manic depressive, paranoid, multi-personality disorder, sociopath tendencies and psychotic episodes with suicidal manifestations. It was finally agreed after my being treated for over 12 months, that the most appropriate label was neurasthenia as my symptoms were unusual and did not fall into typical categories.

This condition necessitated over the course of two years treatment ingesting 18 different kinds of medication from anti-psychotic drugs to sedatives plus several other medications along the way so I was constantly in a state between consciousness and being comatose.

The condition also necessitated a barrage of invasive procedures in an attempt to discover an underlying cause to a condition that seemed to mystify the medics. I recall seeing the capillaries in my brain fluorescing on a monitor as the radio-opaque dye coursed through my bloodstream, the electrodes attached at various points on my skull endeavoring to trace a reading of my brain waves which were so active they almost short circuited the equipment when I went into a fit. Still the answers evaded the medics.

Why, the medics said, would someone manifest such a range of symptoms without any clear medical or psychological basis. Why, the medics said, would someone manifest such a range of bizarre behavior such as smashing windows with a baseball bat, hiding from some unseen force, attempting to physically harm those closest to her? I knew the answer but it was so deeply buried within my subconscious mind that no amount of psychiatric or psychological probing and digging would reveal the truth to a stranger.

In time my mind and body made a decision to reunite. Where I had been over those two years was a dark and frightening place but it was also a place where a miracle was born. The miracle was the metamorphic transformation of self.

The transformation of self took a long time and is still part of the path I now follow. It started with simple things, like buying my first car to give a sense of freedom and independence from the restrictive confines of the medication and treatment I had received. This led me to try new things that were now accessible; my first step was to train in typing and word processing simple yet very useful skills. My mind began thirsting for knowledge, I could now type effectively but wanted more and with my newfound confidence I approached a University lecturer and persuaded him to allow me entry into university without any formal qualifications. How I managed to persuade him is anyones guess but he said yes and two years later I walked across the stage of the City Hall in gowns and a mortar board to collect my first degree certificate I had obtained a BA Honors degree with a 2.1 classification a very proud day for my family and myself.

The birth of my son followed a few years later, a magical moment, which again led to further transformations. Having nursed my son for his first year of life I returned to university to pursue a teaching degree so that my job would match the needs of myson as he grew. Another proud moment when it was announced I had exceeded all expectations and achieved a First Class Honors degree in Science Education.

Scanning through the yellow pages my eyes settled on one particular entry, a school of Reiki. The conversation with the Reiki Master proved the most inspiring thing I have ever done and through his gentle guidance over the next two years I reached a state of peace and calm never known before. The path was difficult as I progressed through the rigorous training, revisiting those times when my thoughts were not my own and sending healing to that tortured soul and the events that led to the separation of mind, body and spirit from 1989 to 1991. Reiki has had such a profound and deeply moving effect on my spiritual development, it has also brought me to a place where I have healed my old wounds so effectively that I am now able to channel healing energy to my closest friends and family. From that selfish, manipulative, dishonest and hedonistic individual that I was, I am now a woman transformed; honest, loving, giving and caring. My son tells me I am the best mum in the world what more could I ask?

My Reiki Master told me that things tend to happen for a reason, I now know that my illness was part of a bigger picture and is one of the reasons for my being able to move forward on a path that is full of light, love and Reiki. Thank you Richard and Ev.
