Giving an Advanced Reiki Session
by William Lee Rand

When Reiki first started to become popular in the 80's all most people had was Reiki I training. This is because at that time Reiki II cost $500.00 and because of inflation this would be more than $1000.00 today! And only a few people took the Reiki Master class because it cost $10,000.00 and it was rarely taught. Because of this, the Reiki sessions given were very simple and based on a treatment method introduced by Takata Sensei called the "foundation treatment." This involved no Reiki symbols and just 8 hand positions including placements over the abdomen, around the shoulders and head and a few optional hand positions on the back. After a while this developed into a larger number of hand placements, but it remained quite simple.

As Reiki became more popular, especially in the mid-90's and into the early part of the new millennium, lower prices for classes allowed students to more easily take Reiki II, the Master level and more advanced forms of Reiki. These higher level classes not only increased the strength of the student's Reiki energy, but also introduced the use of Reiki symbols. At the same time, new Reiki healing methods were developed and research in Japan uncovered what we now call the Japanese Reiki Techniques. Because of these developments, a much more sophisticated Reiki healing style became possible involving the use of many symbols and healing methods. These include the Reiki II, Master and Karuna symbols, Aura Clearing (also called Psychic Surgery), the Healing Attunement, Byosen Scanning, Gyoshi ho, Koki-ho and Reiki Chanting.

As Reiki students take these higher level trainings and learn the new symbols and techniques the question arises as to how to make use of all the healing skills and methods that have been learned. Does one use all the symbols one has learned and all the various healing methods on every client or does one choose those healing methods that are appropriate for the client during the current Reiki session?

As research into the history of Reiki has progressed it was discovered that the original style of Reiki practiced in Japan by Usui Sensei and Hayashi Sensei was an intuitive style in which each client is given a unique Reiki session that makes use of the symbols and healing techniques that the client needs in the moment. This type of session is usually unplanned and guided by inner awareness that spontaneous arises in one's mind.

The use of one's intuition in a Reiki session can be enhanced by the practice of a Japanese Reiki Techniques called reiji-ho. This technique was developed by Usui Sensei. As you practice this technique, your ability to call on your intuition will develop. And in fact it can be used not only during a Reiki session, but at any time you would like to be guided by Reiki.

Reiji-ho means indication of the Spirit and is the second pillar of Reiki.(1) It refers to the guidance that comes from the Spirit of Reiki. This is a technique that allows you to be intuitively guided during a Reiki session. It can be used to determine how to carry out a session for a client—which symbols and techniques to use, to determine where to place the hands during a session as well as where to place the hands to help specific illnesses and conditions.

A modified version of this technique can be used before you start the session to determine which techniques you'll be using. If you are guided to start with a Healing Attunement, followed by Aura Clearing and then hand placements, you can follow the steps below before beginning the hand placements while the client is laying on the Reiki table and you are seated at the head.

1. Place your hands into the Gassho position in front of the heart as shown in the figure above.

2. Say a prayer, asking that your ego be set to the side so that only pure Reiki energy will flow through you. Also give thanks to the source of Reiki and ask that it begin flowing now.

3. Say a prayer on behalf of the client, asking that she or he receive the greatest healing experience that the source of Reiki can conceive of.

4. Move your hands up so the thumbs touch the third eye (the area between the eye brows). Ask Reiki to show you what type of Reiki session is best for this including which symbols and techniques to use. Also ask Reiki to guide your hands during the session to the positions that are needed by this client. You could also ask to be shown the best places to treat a specific condition.

5. Follow your inner guidance and allow your hands to be directed by Reiki. Also, follow this guidance in deciding which symbols and techniques to use throughout the session.

6. Use Reiji-ho anytime during the session when you need additional guidance.

1 The first pillar is Gassho meditation and the third pillar is chiryo or the actual treatment.

Reiki in a Down Economy
by Heidi Mentink

Today’s economy has impacted many people’s lives. Obstacles and challenges can often become blessings in disguise. Facing difficulties can bring about new opportunities, new experiences and the ability to see things from an entirely different perspective. I am no stranger to falling on hard times. But I have hope and Reiki to thank for getting me through tough challenges. I wanted to share my experiences with others who are having difficulties and help them understand and believe that healing is always taking place. There is always help available to those who are in a difficult situation.

In 2008, stress was starting to take a toll on me, and I was having difficulty sleeping at night. I couldn't rest and knew I needed an outlet for reducing this stress. I looked into Reiki training and thought it would help. The very first weekend in January 2009, I attended a Reiki Levels I & II class, not knowing what an impact it would have in my life. Unknowingly, Reiki came into my life when I needed it most.

Immediately following that Reiki class, my life dramatically changed. On January 7, 2009, my husband lost his job and health insurance. His parents also announced they were getting a divorce after 35 years of marriage. His father left and was no longer in any of the family members’ lives. I used Reiki on my husband to help heal his emotional stress. I sent distant Reiki daily to my mother-in-law and the divorce process. Reiki helped my husband to relax and to think clearly about his future plans. Reiki helped my mother-in-law express and release her emotions in a healthy manner. My husband started to work on his own, as a licensed carpenter. During this transition we had to file bankruptcy. Reiki played another important role, by helping us see things in a different way. I started to experience inner healing taking place within my body; I felt that I was shedding old skin and taking responsibility for the things I once didn’t understand.

In 2010, we experienced the death of a very dear friend. Then shortly after that came the death of my grandmother and a few months later, the discovery that our cat (our furry child) of eleven years had bone cancer in her jaw. The day we found out our cat had an untreatable tumor, I began to give her Reiki every day. Our cat loved Reiki and would lie on my lap for hours at a time to receive it. She would become so relaxed and was able to sleep more soundly. Her energy level increased and she began to play again. Reiki helped to extend her quality of life for three months. Instead of holding in my feelings, Reiki helped me to release deep emotions that I experienced after losing loved ones in my life that year.

I continued to study Reiki and was fortunate enough to have an amazing teacher who took me under her wing and attuned me to the Master/Teacher level over a period of time. During challenging times, I would do Reiki on myself and Reiki exchanges with other practitioners. Reiki helped calm my mind and release my emotions in a healthy way. It brought out a passion in me to help others during these challenging times that my husband and I were facing. I volunteered to give Reiki at a cancer center over a two and a half year course of time. This experience produced incredible healing not only for the cancer patients, but for me as well.

Reiki has helped me see all the positive things in my life and has helped heal emotional wounds that I had buried for so many years. In doing so, it has opened a door that has led me on an amazing healing journey. If I had not known about Reiki, I would absolutely be in a different state of mind today. Because of Reiki, I continue to peel away old layers of emotional and mental stress. This has helped me to see things in a new light. I have released the old and am able to let the new in.

Using distant Reiki in our challenges has also brought extraordinary healing into our lives as a couple. My husband and I now live in a beautiful home that was leased to us by a wonderful new friend. We have met so many spiritual and healing people along this journey who have created warmth in our lives. We have learned how to create and manage a healthy financial life, realizing the mistakes we made in the past. Reiki has peeled back old emotional wounds and helped us to forgive and to love ourselves, instead of blaming or feeling shame. Today, I am very grateful for all of life's experiences.

Reiki also helped me to peel back a layer deep within the core of my soul. I now understand that being rich is not about money or financial and material gain. Reiki helped me understand that I already have all the riches in the world: my loving spouse and pet, good health, wonderful friends, food, water, clothes and shelter. Reiki has helped me open my heart, to have even more compassion for others, and it has brought out a passion in me for wanting to help others in their lives. Reiki blessed my life, and I am forever grateful.

Reiki History Updated
Place it on Your Web Site

One of the facts about Reiki is that the practice didn’t start out in the West with an accurate history. There were many discrepancies in the story told by Takata Sensei and there were also difficulties in uncovering accurate information about the history. The difficulties included language, cultural and geographic barriers between Japan and the West as well as the fact Reiki went underground in Japan after World War II making it almost impossible even for the Japanese to learn Reiki.

However, as early as 1991, I began a search for an accurate history of Reiki and over time many discoveries were made. As more accurate information became available, I updated the history of Reiki in Reiki the Healing Touch. Over the last several years facts have emerged that provide important new insight into how Usui Sensei discovered, developed, practiced and taught Reiki. These new facts have come from research done in Japan by Hiroshi Doi, Tadao Yamaguchi, Hyakuten Inamoto and Arjava Petter. In August I completed an update of the history of Reiki which is included in a revised version of Reiki the Healing Touch. However, this new history is now available on the ICRT web site.

You have permission to copy and place this updated history onto your own web site – as long as you do not make any changes and use the whole document. To read the updated history or to place it on your web site click here.

Reiki and Trust
by Deb Karpek

Since I had the idea to write this article it has taken many forms. I can’t tell you how many versions of this I have written and discarded. The irony is not lost on me that I was trying too hard. So as a last ditch attempt to get this written, I’ve decided to surrender the control, keep it simple and write about how Reiki has helped me with the issue of trust.

One of the many benefits of Reiki is how it gives us what we need when we need it. I needed to learn how to trust, and Reiki has provided me with many opportunities. I am still learning— however, I am now more aware of when I am trying to control and when I need to let go, to surrender. I am learning how to get out of my own way and trust. It is not always easy but I find when I am in the flow, everything truly is in divine and perfect order. And when I am not, I have to ask myself “What is my place in this? What do I need to learn?” If I allow my self to listen, I hear the answers. The hard part for me is listening to that inner voice, trusting that it knows. And it always does! I joke that I’m going to teach a class called “Debating Your Inner Voice” since I have had so much practice in it!

In the past, the illusion of control made me feel safe. I liked the idea of knowing things, keeping things in order and having an expectation of outcome. Prior to working full time as a Reiki Master and teacher I was an event and meeting planner. Having known expectations served me well in that profession. In my life as a Reiki Master, I no longer desire these things. I have no idea what is going to happen yet I like how my days unfold.

Let go of concerns and trust the process.

All is in divine and perfect order.

Keep your ego and personality out of it!

The above statements have helped me in my ability to learn how to trust. Like anything new I had to follow the popular saying “fake it until you make it,” and I used affirmations like these constantly until I did believe them. Now not only do I believe them but I try to live them to the best of my abilities— some days better than others, but use them I do and they work!

I believe that my ability to trust has been strengthened by Reiki. When I first discovered Reiki I was newly sober after many years of drinking and drug abuse. I was pretty raw, and trust was not something I had in abundance. Reiki came along and taught me how to implement trust into my life. I believe it is why I have had a happy and healthy recovery during the last 12 years.

Reiki has taught me many things, both on the Reiki table and out in “real life.” The lessons learned in the Reiki room gave me the confidence to tackle my trust issues in my everyday life. The first thing Reiki taught me was how to not be attached to outcome, to let go of any expectations. As a new practitioner it is common to want to see some proof, some tangible evidence that Reiki is working. We want to know! In the beginning of my practice I rarely “felt” anything. Sometimes my clients shared things that bubbled up for them, but mostly it was a pretty quiet affair.

After I’d been practicing awhile I became aware of “knowing” certain things during a session. For example I would be guided to a certain part of the body, to linger longer in certain areas. I’ve always trusted these “hunches.” Other times I’d sense a presence in the room. Even though I can’t really see them, I know they are there, guiding and assisting. I trust this— I have never questioned it.

I am able to trust and discern when and what to share with clients. Sometimes I do share information and other times I do not. I trust again that I will be guided what to do with the information that may come up during a session.

In my prayer of intention at the beginning of my day or practice I ask that my ego and personality step aside and that I not be concerned with outcome or expectation. I affirm that the Reiki flows through me and not from me; that I am a pure and open channel of the Reiki energy. I can then trust that the client gets what she needs as I channel the life force energy. I don’t necessarily need to know what the client wants or needs or to worry about what’s going to happen. What needs to happen will happen. And I am happy to say that I completely trust this.

One of my teachers is fond of saying “put your hands on the person and get out of the way.” This is the best advice I’ve ever received about Reiki. As soon as I heard it I knew it to be true. I also was taught that Reiki can do no harm and that the person gets what he needs when he needs it. We do not direct or control it.

Knowing these things going in made it so much easier. Still, for me, I think I needed to go through a process. The first year or so I “acted as if.” I didn’t understand what was really happening even though I felt like I needed to, yet I had a strong sense of trust. This trust strengthened as my practice grew, and this became the springboard for taking trust out into the world beyond my Reiki room.

Early in my career if I worked on someone I didn’t know or someone I might be intimidated by I would worry or have fear before the session. It really brought up my insecurities. I attracted a fair amount of clergy to my practice and these individuals made me nervous as a new practitioner. However, once I did my prayer of intention and put my hands on them and began channeling Reiki all was well. The Reiki took care of them; I didn’t have to. And I found that I could trust that it would all work out. It always did, when I got out of my own way.

As I put my time in as a practitioner, and the nervousness went away, I became more confident. I trusted the process. And because I trusted it, that helped me branch out into other areas of my life and trust things there as well. I began sending Reiki to things I needed help with, things I needed healed. I spent a lot of time chanting the Distant symbol, sending it to my past to heal my shame and fear. I asked Reiki to meet me at my classes, to take away the anxiety and worry before the class. Sending it ahead of time and asking it to give us all that we needed, with grace and joy, allowed me to let go of the outcome. I’d show up for class knowing Reiki would take care of us. And it proved to be true.

I use Reiki daily. In my morning mediation I ask Reiki to be with me throughout the day, to guide and protect me. I ask that it allow me to come from my God self and to see the God self in others. This has given new energy to my days, and I completely trust that all is in divine and perfect order.

On those days when the challenges seem overwhelming I ask Reiki to help me see my part in things. Why is this happening? What is the lesson I need to learn? I listen and trust that I will get the answer. And I do! It’s not always the answer I think it’s going to be and I don’t always like it, but it turns out to be the one I need to hear.

Because of all of these examples I’ve shared, I’ve learned how to completely trust that I am safe. I am protected and guided. Always. This trust has helped me to really allow myself to shine. When I ask Reiki to be with me daily it gives me a confidence I didn’t always have. I speak in my voice, not the voice that others want to hear. I no longer worry that others won’t like me or what I have to say. I also trust that I am able to speak my truth from a place of love, with grace and kindness. Trust me when I say this was not always my way!

In my Reiki classes, I try to instill this trust in my students. I talk a lot about it— about each of them getting out of their own way, trusting that it works, whether they feel the energy or not. At that first table session in Reiki Level I there is a lot of “I didn’t feel anything” and disappointment, or “OH MY GOD, I can feel so much.” I try to approach both of these statements with the same advice— It doesn’t matter if you feel it or not— it always works! Detach from the outcome! Still, it’s hard not to expect something!

Yesterday I taught such a class. We were doing the first round of practice with four students at a table. When it came time to share, one of the students said at first he felt like he was acting or waiting for something to happen. He felt that he was trying to force it to work. Then he remembered the “get out of the way” quote and was able to relax and allow the Reiki to flow through him. He got it! The rest of the group caught his excitement and they followed suit and it was so beautiful.

This is lovely when it happens, especially in the early classes. When I first began teaching I had this urge to try to convince the students that Reiki worked. I’d talk (way too much) about how it worked and offer up examples and “proof” in an attempt to convince them. I see how this may have put some pressure on them, this expectation to “make it work.” More recently I try to talk less and have them work more with the energy, so they can get a feel for it. Yet there is still this need, as mentioned by the student in the example above to “force it to work.” And I think our culture adds to this need to be result-oriented. I think Level 1 might be my hardest class, trying to explain Reiki, teaching how to trust and to let go of outcome. So it’s a beautiful thing to watch and feel as we “get it” and are able to stop pushing the river and go with the flow.

Some Reiki students of mine like to use a pendulum before and after a session. I am reluctant to use one after a session, as it sets up that expectation of proof. Still, if someone wants to do this, who am I to tell him or her it’s wrong? As a teacher I have to trust that my students will find their own way around the table. I am fond of saying that I help to lay the foundation of their practice, and they will go out and build their own houses, each one looking different. So why do I want to fiddle with their house? — Tell them what to do? — What not to do? Instead I need to trust that they will do what they need to do in a way that serves them, not me. I think as a teacher that has been my biggest lesson in trust: that I do my best to share the information with them and then let go. If they ask for advice I am happy to help, but I must remember to not judge, to let them find their way.

Here is a prayer of intention that I use with my clients before we begin a session:

I am ready and willing to let go of those things

that no longer serve me or my highest good

so I may bring in those things that do—because I deserve it.

I then ask them to relax and trust that they will get what they need. We all deserve love and trust. I am grateful to Reiki for teaching me how to attain both.

World Peace Card Meditation
Wednesday, October 17, 7:30pm

Future Dates

Wednesday - Nov. 21 and Dec. 19 at 7:30pm

You are invited to take part in the next World Peace Card Meditations. Please mark your calendar and forward this notice to all your friends.

Thanks for Your Help!

Because so many of you forwarded this email to your friends, there have been over 288,000 downloads of the World Peace Cards. This is a tremendous increase in the number of people using the cards. So far the total number of World Peace Card sets downloaded, received from our free offer and from our magazine has been more than 303,000! I hope you have been using your peace cards as their use brings blessings to the world as well as to you.

The next World Peace Card group meditations have been scheduled for Wednesday, October 17 at 7:30pm. This is local time in your time zone. This method has been chosen because of the special effect it produces. As people meditate in each successive time zone the energy builds like a wave which gets stronger and stronger as it circles the planet. Because of the higher dimensional nature of consciousness, the energy of peace will be transmitted for a full 24 hours and continue long after this.

Reports from those who took part in the previous meditations indicate many had powerful spiritual experiences. As they united with those taking part in the meditation a feeling of peace developed within that stayed with each for a long time. Some saw beautiful golden light surrounding the planet and others felt that a web of fear was dissipating and being replaced with trust in others and for our future.

All those who have received the cards are being asked to meditate on world peace at this time. By taking part in this group meditation, you’ll be joining thousands of people who will be using the cards to bring peace to the world. By joining together, the affect we have will be greatly multiplied. This powerful experience and will help shift the vibration of our wonderful planet into a higher state of consciousness. As you use the cards to meditate on world peace, you will be a beacon through which peace will spread around the planet which will have a positive uplifting effect on all people.

Please set aside this time to meditate with the cards. The suggested meditation period is 15 minutes, but of course you can meditate longer if you’d like to. The technique I’d like you to use is based on allowing yourself to be a beacon of peace. The World Peace Cards hold the vibration of the World Peace Grids which have been placed at spiritually significant locations and are relay stations for higher consciousness. By simply opening to their energy, you’ll become a channel for their love and peace which will flow through you to all the people on Earth. To do this, hold the cards in your hands or place them in front of you. Then simply meditate on peace.

We are entering a new era. Our entire planet including all the people and living things are moving into a place where it will be much easier to solve our problems and to create peace, prosperity and happiness for everyone. The World Peace Card meditation will quicken this process, making it easier for people to experience this new quality of higher consciousness and will provide great benefit for all people. Since this benefit will be flowing through you out to everyone on the planet, you'll be blessed by this experience as well.

Many have received the cards in the mail or in the Reiki News Magazine while others have downloaded them from our web site. If you would like additional copies of the cards, please download them using this link and print as many copies as you can use. Please feel free to give them to your friends. Also, forward this email to anyone you feel would like to take part in the meditation.

World Peace Card Download

Additional World Peace Cards

Note: This is a larger file and it may take several
minutes for it to open, so please be patient.

When printing the cards from this file, print page 2 first, then place this page in your printer and print the image of the peace grids on the back.

Thank you for taking part in this group meditation.

Reiki Stories

Severe Injuries Healed
I got a call from my sister, who is also one of my students. A friend of hers, a Kansas City Reiki Master who had recently moved to Sedona, Arizona, had contacted her to ask if she and one or two of my other students could go to a hospital in Phoenix to treat a woman from Kansas City. The woman was hiking in some back canyons around Sedona and had taken a severe fall, tumbling down more than 40 feet. Her jaw was broken in two places, the occipital bone was so severely damaged that doctors thought she might lose an eye. The highest concern was the damage to the brain from a fractured skull and nasty concussion. It was felt that the brain damage was such that she would not recover. She had lesser damage to ribs and other bones.

My sister and another student (both Level II) went to the hospital and, at the request of the family, were able to visit and work with the woman for more than an hour that evening and again the next day. Meanwhile, the Kansas City Master contacted the Reiki community there to send distant Reiki. The original prognosis had been six to eight weeks before release from the hospital. On the second evening of Reiki treatment my sister was informed that, inexplicably, the patient was recovering at a remarkable rate. She was lucid and communicating well. It would be possible for her to leave as early as the next day, although she would be held for about a week to make sure she was okay before completing her recovery at home. This was exciting news and gave everyone involved an improved level of confidence in Reiki. This small group is practicing and sending Reiki on a regular basis. Bud Gill

Reiki Heals Depression
I would like to share about a treatment I gave some six months ago on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus. During the past two and a half years I have been working as a Reiki Master/Teacher and practitioner and have treated around 1000 people during this time. Six months ago I was introduced to a middle aged lady who had booked a treatment. As soon as I was introduced to this lady, I knew something special was about to happen. This feeling, sixth scenes or intuition was something that developed after two years of giving hundreds of treatments and is a tool that I am able to use when it is needed, i.e. when a person has a deep seated emotional problem that they cannot talk about.

The client lay on the couch but I could sense that she was tense so I gently talked to her for 5 minutes and she started to relax. I noticed that her eyes were lifeless and started to feel a very strong energy field around her brow chakra. I started the hand positions and felt a feeling of calmness which became stronger with every hand position. My eyes were drawn to her face during the treatment and I could see her becoming calmer and more at peace as the treatment proceeded. By the end of the treatment she looked very calm and I gently woke her from her deep sleep.

The first thing I noticed about her was her eyes. They were full of life and as she spoke to me she seemed so alive, not like the lady I had seen one hour earlier. I asked her how she felt and with tears in her eyes she said "wonderful". She had seen a beautiful white light during the treatment which had made her feel safe, happy and calm. The experience she said had made her want to cry with joy. She told me that for forty years she had suffered from depression and that now she felt free! She said that she needed to go away on holiday to Cyprus to try and relax but felt that the real reason for her vacation was probably to have this Reiki treatment, although she had not even heard of Reiki before and only booked her treatment through a conversation she had with another guest at the hotel.

Reiki knew her problem and removed it, I knew it and so did she and after she left the treatment room, I felt very emotional. Reiki is a wonderful healing energy and I am fortunate to be able to treat so many people. I am now on a new journey, and am living in my home country " England" and with the help from the Reiki universe, am opening my own Reiki clinic. Philip Westwood

Reiki Heals Neck
My friend walked into the dance class with a neck brace. We gathered around her to understand why. It was hurting and she was unable to turn her head in either direction. She went to the Emergency Room. After evaluation they placed a neck brace on her and suggested this would relieve whatever was causing her pain and distress. I informed her of Reiki and offered to do a short ten minute treatment.

She was inspired to hear of how Reiki might help. She took off the neck brace for me to start. I suggested that perhaps she should keep it on since the doctors had placed it there for a reason, but she insisted, so I proceeded. After ten minutes of me feeling the energy flowing to her, I intuitively sensed it was enough.

She had sensed warmth and pulsing from my hands and she was surprised to turn her head. I suggested that she still wear the neck brace until she saw the doctor again, but she did not, and fortunately has been well ever since. Wendy Johnson
