Maintaining a Clear Channel
by William Lee Rand
Taking on a client’s negative energy is an issue that doesn’t come up for most Reiki practitioners. The reason it doesn’t happen very often is that during a Reiki session most practitioners aren’t using any of their own personal energy but are channeling only Reiki energy. Because the practitioner’s personal energy isn’t involved, the client’s negative energy doesn’t have a pathway to travel back to the practitioner. However, if a Reiki session isn’t given properly, or if the practitioner is highly empathic, it is possible for the practitioner to take on some of the client’s negative energy.
In the early days of Reiki in the West students were taught it was impossible for a practitioner to take on a client’s negative energy. Even though students were told this, there were still a few practitioners who reported feeling pain, negative feelings, or that their vibration had been lowered in some way after giving a Reiki treatment. Some reported that they experienced taking on the client’s symptoms.
Since this experience wasn’t supposed to happen and no solution had been taught, many teachers simply dismissed it as coming from the imagination of the practitioner. However, there were others who realized that experience provided a better description of reality than what was or wasn’t supposed to happen in a session and that something important was missing from what was being taught in Reiki classes. This awareness inspired deeper investigation into how Reiki sessions work and the development of methods to prevent the client’s negative energy from adversely affecting the practitioner.
A recent discovery in brain science may shed light on one way practitioners become influenced by the negative energy of a client. It’s been discovered that there are specialized cells in the brain called mirror neurons. These neurons are located in the premotor cortex and the inferior parietal cortex and are thought to assist in the learning process by helping us to mimic what others are doing. It is also thought that they play an important role in helping us understand how others are thinking and feeling, and because of this, may play a role in the experience of empathy.
Some Reiki practitioners who take on the symptoms of their clients also report that they are highly emphatic. It is thought that empathy is usually stimulated through sensory impressions, but the descriptions some practitioners give of their experiences indicate that their empathy may be stimulated by input directly from the client’s energy field.
This possibility is validated by scientific studies described in a paper titled “The Electricity of Touch: Detection and measurement of cardiac energy exchange between people.” These studies show, among other things, that the energy field created by the heartbeat of one person can influence the brain waves of someone close by. Furthermore, it is thought that the energy field of the heart can contain subtle information concerning the person’s health that could be communicated to others through this process.
Based on this information, a practitioner with a more sensitive empathic response could mimic the negative symptoms of a client and take on a client’s negative energy based solely on an interaction between energy fields. It is also hypothesized that a person’s intention can have an effect on the strength and sensitivity of one’s energy field, thus increasing or decreasing the energetic responsiveness between people and providing a solution for those people who experience taking on the negative energy of the client.
In cases where the client’s negative energy has an adverse influence on the practitioner, it is the mixing of the practitioner’s personal energy with the healing process, as well as an overly-sensitive empathic response that are the main causes of the problem. Using one’s personal energy for healing and/or a personal empathic response to the client are not necessary when giving a Reiki treatment, as it is the Reiki energy alone that does the healing. In fact, a higher quality healing experience takes place when this doesn’t happen. Out of this understanding, effective methods have been developed to prevent susceptible practitioners from taking on negative energy from their clients.
The following is an effective method for preventing negative energy back flow and for creating a clear pathway for the flow of Reiki. Its use is recommended for all practitioners prior to giving Reiki.
- Before starting a session, say a prayer asking that your ego and personal energy be set aside so they aren’t involved in the healing session and only pure Reiki energy flows through you to the client.
- Draw Reiki symbols on your hands, including the Power symbol and any Master symbols you have.
- Then draw a large Power symbol over your torso and small Power symbols over each chakra.
- Sit with your hands on your legs giving yourself Reiki while repeating this affirmation: I surrender completely to the pure light of Reiki. I surrender completely to the pure light of Reiki. I surrender completely to the pure light of Reiki.
- Proceed with the Reiki session.
- When you’re done with the session, smudge yourself and the room and do an energy cleansing process such as Kenyoku.
This process is powerful and repeated use will strengthen its effectiveness.
If this technique doesn’t work well for you, and you are still taking on the client’s negative energy, then it’s likely that your solution exists on a deeper level and a more direct approach is needed. There may be an unusual weakness in your energy field that is allowing the negative energy from the client to adversely affect you. This type of energy field weakness is usually related to something out of balance in your personality and within the subconscious mind.
One way this weakness may be caused is if the practitioner has a strong personal need for the client to heal. When this is the case, some of the practitioner’s personal energy may enter into the healing experience, weakening the practitioner’s energy field and providing a pathway for the client’s negative energy to flow back to the practitioner. In other cases, either consciously or unconsciously, the practitioner may be willing to take on the client’s negative energy as a way to help the client heal, thus opening a pathway. Another way negative energy transfer can come to the practitioner is if there is something in the practitioner’s personality that wants to limit some aspect of the practitioner’s life. This personality part may choose to take on the negative energy of the client to accomplish this purpose. These are a few possibilities; there could be others, but thinking along these lines may give you an idea about how and why negative energy transfer could be taking place.
If you believe you have this kind of issue within your energy field, locate the area of the weakness by using techniques such as Byosen scanning and Reiji ho, or say a prayer asking for guidance and to be shown the location of the cause of the issue. Sometimes more detailed information about the cause is shown when this technique is used, but all that is really needed is discovery of the area in need of treatment.
Once the area is known, use Reiki to heal it. This can simply involve placing your Reiki hands there, or include the use of Reiki symbols such as the Power symbol or Mental/Emotional symbol or Master symbols, the use of aura clearing, a healing attunement, or any other Reiki techniques you have available to you and are guided to use. Receiving treatments from others is also important. This process may require repeated sessions, but as you continue, the part of your energy field that is allowing the negative energy to enter will become more and more healed until the healing is complete.
Reiki is a powerful technique. When done properly, it can provide amazing results for the client and also be a blessing for the practitioner. Following these guidelines will create the conditions necessary to provide healthy, successful Reiki sessions. May you be blessed by the joy of Reiki energy and your commitment to help others.

Blessed by Baby Cows
by Mary Blake
It’s amazing how quickly Reiki energy can work when there is a clear intention. In my case, it was channeling my love for animals into practicing animal Reiki. During my Level I and II training, I happened to read an article by Kathleen Prasad in the Spring 2009 issue of Reiki News Magazine: “Five Reiki Lessons I Learned from My Animal Teachers.” It was a tutorial on best practices for animal Reiki. I was so inspired by the article and wondered when I’d have a chance to try Kathleen’s approach.
I didn’t have to wait long. Even my Master Teacher Eleonore Khoury remarked, “That was fast!” A few weeks after my Reiki training, an e-mail popped into my inbox from the Gentle Barn Foundation, (www.gentlebarn.org), a local sanctuary for abused animals. Six baby calves had just been rescued from veal crates and the slaughterhouse. The Gentle Barn needed volunteers to care for them around the clock. Could I spare some time?
Amazed and thrilled at the opportunity, I signed up for a 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. shift on the weekend. During the hour and a half drive to Santa Clarita, I kept reminding myself to lose any attachment to the outcome and just concentrate on creating a loving space for healing.
When I arrived at the quarantined barn, the calves were outside eating alfalfa. For baby calves, they looked pretty big to a city girl like me—they came up to my waist and probably weighed from 150 to 200 pounds, or maybe less because they were so malnourished. Jutting hipbones and splotched sores on their coats were evidence of their abuse. One calf, named Chi, had recently died. Conjunctivitis (pinkeye) had left another one blind and given the rest cloudy eyes, which constantly watered, leaving wet streaks on their faces. Pneumonia made breathing labored and they coughed and heaved in an effort to clear the fluid in their lungs.
Jay Weiner, who runs the Gentle Barn with founder Ellie Laks, explained that in addition to the intensive veterinary care they were receiving, the baby cows needed to be bottle-fed twice a day, washed daily to bring down their fever, and blanketed at night in the barn to keep them warm. My job was to give the nightly feeding, tuck them in, and keep the barn clean. “And be sure to give them lots and lots of TLC.”
I noticed one of the calves was very friendly and really enjoyed being petted. I was told, “Oh, that’s Forgiveness. He’s a great guy.” Star, Crystal and Courage were shy and blind Faith just bumped into everything. Once fed, the five settled into a routine and began lying down on the barn floor. Forgiveness bedded down next to my chair. I covered each one with a blanket and started a Reiki meditation, hoping to fill the barn up with healing energy to ease their physical and emotional pain. I could hear them all breathing and coughing as the cold night deepened into stillness broken by an occasional car on the road.
Around 1:30 a.m., Jay checked in, and we spread a fresh, deep layer of sawdust on the floor and replenished the water. He took a few temperatures and uncovered one of the calves, who had a high fever. With the pitchfork and wheelbarrow, I cleaned up the “cow pies” and Jay left.
It happened just after I sat down again to meditate. With all the activity, the calves were up again and walking around the barn. Faith collided with one of them, who lost his balance, fell down, rolled over and just lay there on his side, making no effort to get up. A strong intuitive knowing told me that if I didn’t get him back on his feet right away, he could suffocate from all the fluid in his lungs.
I pulled his head up, held it, brushed the sawdust out of his nose and mouth, and kept saying, “Get up, get up!” I continued pushing against his side until he finally got up on his feet. I brushed him off, blotted his weeping eyes, stroked his coat and told him he was going to be all right. After that scare, I watched Faith closely.
When they settled down again, I went back to my Reiki meditation. The calf who had fallen came over and stood right in front of my chair for the longest time. Was he ever going to lay down? Yes, he did, right in front of me, and rested the side of his head against my knee. Even a beginner knows this is an invitation to hands-on Reiki! Filled with wonder and joy, I placed my hands on his head and was overcome with a rush of love and gratitude for the opportunity to give the healing blessings of Reiki to this sweet, innocent spirit who had suffered so much.
He kept leaning against me, falling into a peaceful “Reiki nap,” until around 2:45 a.m. when I heard the arrival of the volunteer who’d come to relieve me. It was hard leaving him and the others as well, so I sealed the Reiki treatment and vowed to come back.
The other two visits were not nearly as eventful. These babies were clearly getting better! By my third visit, the vet was able to stop their meds and pretty soon they would be allowed in with the other 12 rescued cows. One time I forgot to close the barn gate when I went to get food. Big mistake. They all followed me out to the trailer and one calf stuck his head in the manna bag, so I had to pull him out and maneuver around the other four who were squeezing me in their eagerness to get to the food. Next feeding, I kept the barn gate shut, so they all clustered around it and mooed at me. I’m used to begging behavior with my cats, but baby cows were a whole new experience!
The deep gratitude I feel to Spirit in leading me to Reiki, to my Teacher Eleonore and the Gentle Barn is so overwhelming, it’s almost impossible to express. To me, animals are the most innocent, unconditionally loving and perceptive beings on the planet. They teach us, suffer for us, and show us that love can triumph over anything. Reiki is the door to what the Greeks call Agape, the divine and purest expression of love. To be able to give that kind of love to the animals who are sharing this journey with us is one of the greatest blessings of my life.

World Peace Card Meditation
Thursday, October 15, 7:30pm
(based on local time in your time zone)
You are invited to take part in the tenth World Peace Card Meditation. Please mark your calendar and forward this notice to all your friends.
Thanks for Your Help!
Because so many of you forwarded this notice to your friends, there have been over 127,700 downloads of the World Peace Cards. This is a tremendous increase in the number of people using the cards. So far the total number of World Peace Card sets downloaded, received from our free offer and from our magazine has been over 142,700! I hope you have been using your peace cards as their use brings blessings to the world as well as to you.
The tenth World Peace Card group meditation has been scheduled for Thursday, October 15 at 7:30pm. This is local time in your time zone. This method has been chosen because of the special effect it produces. As people meditate in each successive time zone the energy builds like a wave which gets stronger and stronger as it circles the planet. Because of the higher dimensional nature of consciousness, the energy of peace will be transmitted for a full 24 hours and continue long after this.
Reports from those who took part in the previous meditations indicate many had powerful spiritual experiences. As they united with those taking part in the meditation a feeling of peace developed within that stayed with each for a long time. Some saw beautiful golden light surrounding the planet and others felt that a web of fear was dissipating and being replaced with trust in others and for our future.
All those who have received the cards are being asked to meditate on world peace at this time. By taking part in this group meditation, you’ll be joining thousands of people who will be using the cards to bring peace to the world. By joining together, the affect we have will be greatly multiplied. This powerful experience and will help shift the vibration of our wonderful planet into a higher state of consciousness. As you use the cards to meditate on world peace, you will be a beacon through which peace will spread around the planet which will have a positive uplifting effect on all people.
Please set aside this time to meditate with the cards. The suggested meditation period is 15 minutes, but of course you can meditate longer if you’d like to. The technique I’d like you to use is based on allowing yourself to be a beacon of peace. The World Peace Cards hold the vibration of the World Peace Grids which have been placed at spiritually significant locations and are relay stations for higher consciousness. By simply opening to their energy, you’ll become a channel for their love and peace which will flow through you to all the people on Earth. To do this, hold the cards in your hands or place them in front of you. Then simply meditate on peace.
We are entering a new era. Our entire planet including all the people and living things are moving into a place where it will be much easier to solve our problems and to create peace, prosperity and happiness for everyone. The World Peace Card meditation will quicken this process, making it easier for people to experience this new quality of higher consciousness and will provide great benefit for all people. Since this benefit will be flowing through you out to everyone on the planet, you'll be blessed by this experience as well.
Many have received the cards in the mail or in the Reiki News Magazine while others have downloaded them from our web site. If you would like additional copies of the cards, please download them using this link and print as many copies as you can use. Please feel free to give them to your friends. Also, forward this email to anyone you feel would like to take part in the meditation.

Reiki Stories
Cats and Cancer
My two cats go nuts more for Reiki than catnip. Our eldest cat TOBY, was diagnosed with kidney disorders and that without daily fluids and possibly an expensive surgery she would surely die painfully. This was back in 2004; at the time I as a Level 2 Reiki practitioner. I immediately began extensive Reiki treatments to the cat, which she very willingly accepted. In 2003 I attended William Rand’s Master teacher class in Glastonbury; One of the most magical moments in my life. Thanks William. Our final attunement was performed within the circle of Stonehenge. (Which leads to my second story...but let finish with Toby the cat first.) When I returned from England, that class shot my skills and connection with the source to an incredible height. I had been teaching as often as possible ever since. Toby the cat...is now 16, and prancing like a kitten. Whenever she’s having a low day, she jumps in my lap and claws my legs to let me know she wants Reiki. Then when she’s had her fill, she nips my fingers. It’s a wonderful bonding experience... and consequently the VET still can’t believe this cat is still alive. lol
The second story is not mine but is linked to my England visit with William. My traveling companion was Brian, who came to the same class too. His father was diagnosed with stage four lung cancers at nearly 80 years of age. His father had pretty much decided this was it, and refused treatment and hospice care. Brian stood between the gate stones of Stonehenge and sent long distance Reiki to his father...when he returned home to the states, he found his father in an amazing turnaround of health. With some more long distance treatments, (because his father wasn't really receptive of any treatment whatsoever) his dad had a complete remission, no cancer in his body anywhere. The doctors actually used the word Miracle. His father enjoyed four more years of healthy life until he finally succumbed to a heart attack.
These were just two stories of my experiences with Reiki, and more happen every day. However the most miraculous effects of Reiki healing are when I teach. Reiki loves being shared, and my students always write back saying "I don’t know how I lived without it!" Blessed Be. Rev. Matt Thomas, Reading PA.
Reiki Heals Tumor
Last year a friend of mine was told she had a small tumor in her throat. I asked if she was game for a Reiki session and she eagerly agreed.
I sent her distance Reiki for twenty minutes while she was resting. During this time a blue light appeared before me that traveled to the right side of her neck and went inwards. After the session my friend mentioned she felt warm energy and very relaxed. She asked if I had seen anything and I told her. The site where the blue light landed was the location of the tumor. Three weeks later she discovered when visiting her doctor that the tumor was gone. At the time I had my level two Usui Reiki. Maxine Kerr
Reiki and Arthritic Pain
I am a nurse and have many opportunities to use Reiki in my practice. I had a patient who had a cervical fusion due to arthritic changes in her neck. She was complaining of her hands hurting and it wasn't time for pain medication. I held one of her tiny crippled hands between mine. Within a minute she said her hand was warm and so was her other hand and both feet. These had been cold since the surgery and she was told they were always going to be that way. That was early on in the night shift and they were still warm in the morning. Thank you Reiki. Jean LaBore
Heart Healed
On 23 October 2001, my 60th Birthday, I had a heart attack. A few days later after an angiogram showed severe blockages requiring 5 by-passes and lots of scaring from previous heart attacks which I didn’t know I had. On the 1st Thursday of November I returned to where I had learned my Reiki and that night 10 people gave me a joint healing for ½ hour and again the following week, (there wasn’t much room for any more hands). Add on to that what my friend and I did I sure copped heaps of Reiki. On 10 December 2001, when I was opened up to get the By Passes, The surgeon noted that my heart had healed itself as the scaring was not there. My girlfriend and I couldn’t believe what he said. But we were very happy. I am convinced that it was Reiki that did the trick. I have since had the scaring re-checked from another angiogram and when I received two Stints into one of the new grafts as it had become blocked. Believe me, with what I have been through this news convinced me that Reiki is no scam. I am a true believer and I am now back to walking 3-4 miles every 2nd day in one hour. I will soon be doing my Masters and I will be out there spreading the power of Reiki to those who wish it. Reiki, Wonder Drug. John Lincoln
