Muliple Sclerosis, My Healing Journey
by Diana M. Amadeo

Even a thought, even a possibility, can shatter us and transform us.
—Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche (1844–1900)

I began my journey into hands-on healing as a recipient. After attending an astounding faith-healing service that noticeably improved mobility and cognitive impairments brought about by multiple sclerosis (MS), my faith in the possibility of healing was quickened. Following that prayer service, I used Reiki sessions for several years as a “booster shot” towards healthy recovery. Several of the practitioners who worked on me knew of my dozen years of physical struggle with MS and the consistent turnabout. They cheered me on and delighted in my progress. I became their “demo girl” for those likewise afflicted.

After several years of prayer and Reiki therapy, the time finally felt right to pursue healing studies on my own. I took classes with two different Usui Masters at our local holistic clinic. Soon, family members and dear homebound friends became my clients. I was kept busy doing visits with my colorful chakra stool and angel bag complete with music, CD player, hand cleanser, tissues, and journal. In a short period of time, the clinic where I had studied asked me to join them to serve two religious communities in our area. I had found my niche as a Reiki RN.

Initially, I had no desire to progress beyond Level II practitioner. However, after working side-by-side with the Masters, an overwhelming vocation presented itself.
When you receive the calling to be a Master, there is absolutely no one or no circumstance that can keep you from that goal. And when others ask you to teach them the fundamentals of hands-on healing, the natural progression to Reiki Master Teacher evolves. I am now a devoted student, a humble master[QU: capped here?], and a teacher of healing peace.
For me, Reiki is a gentle, loving spiritual experience. It is a humble expression of gratitude to the Divine and creation for life, joy, and serenity. It is a “giving back” gesture that is of tremendous benefit to both giver and receiver. Reiki serves to restore the healthy tranquil balance of body, mind, and spirit that is our birthright. Hands-on healing restores or intensifies our connection with the Source.

God has always been an important part of my life. Spirit understood my suffering and pain during illness and consoled me with beautiful enriching meditations. When the time was right, the Divine supported my desire to be whole, again. But that recovery was to be in God’s time, when it was seen that I was truly ready. When the lessons were learned and the compassion to radiate love to mankind was kindled, I would be whole, again. And so it is.
The Divine showed me the conditions and circumstances that contributed to the onset of my disease. And the Author of Life also showed me the necessity of my impairment to accelerate this life’s spiritual progress. The Creator revealed to me how my journey has served as inspiration and hope to those with disease and long suffering. And it became apparent how necessary my hands are now to continue the work of the Divine in this world.

One of my greatest moments as a Reiki practitioner came not during a session but afterwards. I was leaving a convent after serving a good friend, when a resident approached me on a familiar green mobility chair. I had never seen this woman before, a person with ALS, but something pulled at me. I was mesmerized by her words, her struggle, her actions. But was it the woman, or something very simple that captivated me? And then I saw it—the familiar scuff, the ding. The light damage inflicted upon the scooter while I was at the soccer field watching my daughter’s game.

“Oh, my God,” I gushed suddenly. “That’s my scooter.”
I had donated the well-worn mobility device along with Lofstrand crutches to the religious rehab center several years before. The donation had come after much prayer and reflection. I had given the means of mobility away when the trust came within that such means of assistance would not be needed in the foreseeable future. With the donation came the ultimate acceptance of my ongoing healing.

In the years that followed the donation, I had become very busy. Being handicapped was a distant memory. The scooter’s existence was forgotten. Immobility, spastic pain, visual disturbances, hearing loss, frustration, and fatigue had been replaced with love, peace, joy, and serenity. I had forgotten how severely affected I had been by MS until that very moment, when I recognized my chair. I had taken for granted the tremendous, awesome recovery.

The lady on my old green scooter stared at me for a moment. She peered curiously into my grateful, tear-filled eyes. Then she listened to my story.
“Always stay open to the possibility of healing,” I said quietly.
She nodded and scooted away.

The Evolving Nature of Reiki
by William Lee Rand

As more information continues to accumulate about the history of Reiki a new picture is forming about how the practice of Reiki developed which has many interesting details. The following information is based on research by Arjava Petter, Walter Lubeck, Hiroshi Doi, Hyakuten Inamoto and myself. Some of the conclusions are my own which I explain below.

It appears that the form of Reiki Dr. Usui and Dr. Hayashi practiced evolved during the time they were teaching. As an example, Dr. Usui did not always use symbols, nor was there a formal attunement process (called reiju in Japan) in the beginning. The symbols were added by Dr. Usui after a few years to help new students more easily make use of the Reiki energies and techniques. Also, apparently, the attunement process was at first something that took place more by association with Dr. Usui or perhaps though some other informal activity such as reciting a poem. It was only later that Dr. Usui developed a formal attunement process.

An interesting idea that has also emerged is that when Dr. Usui did start to use symbols, there were only three. He didn’t use a master symbol. This is confirmed by the above researchers and is validated by the fact that the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai, do not use a master symbol – even in attunements. The Gakkai is the organization Dr. Usui set up to preserve his teachings and therefore, they are dedicated to teaching the same way Dr. Usui taught.

This is a startling idea to many as we always assumed Dr. Usui used the master symbol. But if it’s true that he didn’t, then where did it come from? Based on information from the Gakkai, according to Hiroshi Doi, Dr. Usui asked Dr. Hayashi to develop the system of Reiki based on his medical training. When he was asked to do this, Dr. Hayashi was a member of the Gakkai, but after he followed Dr. Usui’s request and developed new methods, Dr. Hayashi left the Gakkai to form his own organization called Hayashi Reiki Kenkyu Kai.

Dr. Hayashi developed the Usui system. The changes he made include treating a client while the client is laying on a treatment table rather than seated in a chair, treatments given by two practitioners at a time rather than one, a system of hand positions that remained the same for every treatment rather than following ones intuition (although he may have also used unique hand positions guided by intuition as part of other treatment techniques), the development of a Reiki handbook, a new method of attunements, teaching Reiki I&II in one five day class with an attunement given on each day.

We do not have any definite information at this time about who added the master symbol to Usui Reiki. But in thinking about the facts that have been verified, it’s possible to narrow it down to either Mrs. Takata or Dr. Hayashi. However, in considering this information and other details, I’ve come to the conclusion that it is likely that the master symbol was added to Usui Reiki by Dr. Hayashi. We know that Mrs. Takata used the master symbol and that she was taught Reiki by Dr. Hayashi. Because Mrs. Yamaguchi (also trained by Dr. Hayashi) didn’t use the master symbol, some have thought that it must have been Mrs. Takata who added the master symbol to Reiki, but this is not likely. First of all, while Mrs. Takata was of Japanese ancestry, she didn’t have a good understanding of the Japanese language, nor of Japanese spiritual practices. Secondly, Dr. Hayashi was an innovator and an experimenter. He was asked to develop the Usui system by Dr. Usui and we know he did modify and develop the attunement process. Therefore, it is much more likely that he was the one who added the master symbol and then taught it to Mrs. Takata.

It is my thinking that the likely reason Mrs. Yamaguchi didn’t receive the master symbol from Dr. Hayashi is that as he experimented and developed new techniques his teaching and practice methods evolved over time. He may have had several ways he practiced and a number of ways he did the attunements. He could have taught Mrs. Yamaguchi one system and Mrs. Takata another.

The above research indicates that there was no single way that the Usui system was originally practiced but that it evolved over time. Both Dr. Usui and Dr. Hayashi practiced it in different ways depending on the state they had developed Reiki into at any given time. Because of this, it is difficult to determine what the original method was because both Dr. Usui and Dr. Hayashi changed the way they practiced Reiki during the time they were teaching.

We also know that after Mrs. Takata passed in 1980, many forms and branches of Reiki developed in the West. We can see from this that Reiki has always been a system that has been evolving.

I believe that the most important thing for us to consider isn’t if we are practicing exactly the same way that Dr. Usui or Dr. Hayashi practiced, but that the style of Reiki we do practice creates results and is beneficial to the client. Some students of Western Reiki have had the opportunity to compare the quality of their Reiki with that of the Gakkai and they have found that both styles seem to be very comparable in terms of effectiveness – neither being noticeably stronger or more beneficial than the other. It seems that the most important factor to insure that ones Reiki is effect is simply choosing a teacher and a style that one is inwardly guided to and that feels right for the individual, and then to simply allow oneself to be guided by the spirit of Reiki.

Heart Healed
I sort of bumped into Reiki. In 2000 I wasn't feeling well, and after a lot of tests I was told that I had had a silent heart attack. I have diabetes. I was told that I needed a heart catheterization, so one was scheduled. I live in a rural area and traveling to Syracuse, New York, was necessary. There was also a two-week wait. During this time I went with my partner to a college graduation party. There I met a woman who asked me if I was feeling OK. We discussed a few things, and then she asked me to come to her house during the week. Our schedules were pretty full and the only night I could go was the night before I traveled four hours to Syracuse for the test. I went, not knowing what I was invited for. She asked me if I had ever heard of Reiki, and I had not. She asked if she could do a treatment—what did I have to lose? The treatment was wonderful and lasted about an hour. I became very calm, then very emotional—such a release. When she was done she let me talk about anything I needed to talk about. I felt so loved, protected, and different. I had the procedure the next day. I was scared; I won't deny that. During the treatment I began to cry; fear was taking over. The doctor told me to look at the monitors. There must have been ten of them against the wall. He then told me what he saw, and didn't really understand. He said there was a very healthy heart on the screens, very healthy. There was no evidence of a heart attack, just a small valve problem. After the procedure he came to my room to talk with me. He said that he was sure I had had a heart attack—the echo, ultrasound, etc., had all indicated that I had, but there was no evidence of a heart attack. He didn't understand it, he said. I said I did. After I got home the next day I called my friend, my Reiki teacher, and told her the story. At that point my desire to know and use Reiki began. She was a Reiki Master, and from her I too have learned. Do I believe the Reiki made the difference? Yes, with all my heart and spirit. I tell this story when I teach Reiki, and always become emotional, as I am now. —Kay

Uteral Malignancy Healed
My workmate Denise was diagnosed with a growth in her uterus. They took blood samples, biopsies, and ultrasounds. They showed a malignancy. She is just twenty-one and has five-year-old twin daughters and is one of the hardest workers I have seen, completing four certificates in tourism and a diploma in youth counseling in the years since having her daughters. She also works full time. I gave her two short treatments of Reiki hands-on and also each night I sent her Reiki. I also asked friends to pray for her and told them we had a month to heal her before the surgery to remove the growth. I also asked Archangel Raphael to heal her.

The surgery was scheduled for this week and she had to go in for a pre-op consultation. They couldn't find the lump. They redid all the tests and searched and they found a little bit of scar tissue where the lump had been and no further signs in her blood. Thank you to all who became involved and helped this dear girl, and Thank You to Raphael.—Margaret McGuire

Reiki Heals Stroke
I recently had a patient who suffered from having a stroke. He experienced a mild weakness on his left side and great difficulty walking because he could not balance, was dizzy and had double vision. He fell a lot and couldn't walk outdoors. Also, he reported that he felt like worms were crawling in his head. He saw a neurologist, neuro surgen, and a balance therapist with no improvement and in fact his symptoms got worse as he began vomiting.

I started giving him Reiki treatments and cranialsacreal therapy, followed by balancing exercises. After four treatments, this 83 year old gentelman recovered completely. Now he can drive, and go for walks with no complaints - no double vision and his head is back to normal. Each time he recieved a treatment, he went into deep relaxation within 30 seconds and said it was a heavenly feeling. Reiki can do miracles. —Hima Dalal, Lexington, S.C.

Reiki Scanning Detects Mass
I had a skeptical friend, who, after I took Reiki I, rolled his eyes and said, “Sure, you can Reiki me, whatever that is!” As I was scanning his body, I was particularly drawn to his left chest area, and particularly his areola. My hands, in an instant, turned to ice. It was a feeling I can't really describe. I couldn't ignore this. I stopped and my hands continued to be ice (which he felt and was stunned). I had to put my “nurse hat” back on and begin to palpate and assess, and much to my amazement, there was a very large mass in his chest wall. Although he felt the cold, he was reluctant to go the doctor, so I dragged him kicking and screaming. The surgeon brought in his resident, as he had “never seen anything like that.” They immediately scheduled surgery and removed a very large mass that, had it been left any longer, would have put pressure on his heart and he would have died. This was my first (and most memorable) experience with Reiki. It still amazes me, and this was over a year ago. I know we crossed paths for a reason. —Light and love, Lyn Martin RN, BSN, LMT

Ligament Healed
I was on my annual trip to Acapulco, Mexico, for New Year’s. On New Year's morning, during the last gasps of the New Year's party (approximately 5 a.m.), one young Mexican man slipped on the marble floor where it was wet and really hurt his leg. His friends took him to the local hospital. He came back and had not broken his leg but had torn his ligament, which is potentially more serious.

I placed my hands around the injured area on his leg just above his knee. Immediately my hands began to heat up. I would shift positions around, but it was clear there was some serious energy flowing through my hands. He said it felt very warm and tingly. I kept at it for roughly twenty minutes when suddenly what felt like a bolt of lightning went through my hands and into his leg. It was not in any way painful but shocked both of us, to where I pulled my hands away and he jumped. We looked at each other, and he said, “What happened?” I told him I honestly didn't know; I had never experienced that before. What happened, as near as I could figure after speaking with other Reiki healers, is that the injury was fairly substantial and the healing energy simply wasn't going through fast enough. So it apparently was a “bolt” of healing energy that shot through me into his leg.

I asked him how he felt and he said the pain was almost gone; it was no longer throbbing and stabbing as it was before. He profusely thanked me and said it felt so much better. After that, I gave him twice-daily Reiki treatments, although no more bolts went through me. The hospital had told him it would be an eight- to ten-week healing period. I heard later through our host in Acapulco that his injury was substantially healed in five weeks, according to his doctor in Mexico City. Again he passed on his thanks to me through our host and said that he was telling everyone he knew in Mexico about Reiki healing and how it helped him. I was very proud of this healing experience and learned very much.—Mauro Montoya
