Reiki and Living Your Life on Purpose
by William Lee Rand
Life is filled with challenges, problems and unwanted situations that prevent us from being happy and stop us from fulfilling our dreams. This situation often leaves us feeling frustrated about life and after butting our heads against one disappointment after another we may come to realize that what we really want in life isn’t going to happen. So we give in and accept a life less meaningful than what we really want, stuffing our dreams away where they no longer tug on our hearts.
And yet, this isn’t the way life has to be. There is a way to live our dreams, to allow the fondest desires of our heart to lead the way into a life of meaning and purpose that is healthy and kind and fulfilling. Within the heart of Reiki are the solutions we need to find our way out of difficulty and into a life of clarity, peace and purpose; a life that is right for us and makes sense and allows us to be the person we were meant to be.
All the things that have slowed you down, and blocked your plans and stopped you from doing what you want are there for a reason. Rather than condemning them and wishing they weren’t there and trying to get away from them, if you would realize that they are directing you toward the answers you need to achieve your dreams, you’d take the time to focus directly on them and ferret out the lessons they are trying to provide you.
When you fail at something, it doesn’t mean all is lost. Within every failure are the lessons needed to achieve your goals. People fail because they lack one or more of the skills or resources needed to succeed. By taking the time to analyze what happened and discover what those skills and resources are, and then develop them, there can be a next time that is more likely to succeed. By following this process, one continually develops ones skills and personal qualities until ones goal is achieved.
There are two kinds of intelligence. One is intellectual intelligence or IQ. The second is emotional intelligence. Of the two, emotional intelligence is by far the most important. As an example, there are lots of people with high IQs who are unable to achieve their goals and live lives of unhappiness, neurosis and discontent. Clearly being smart is no guarantee for success. However, having a high level of emotional intelligence allows one to make wise decisions, and persist with plans until a valued goal is achieved. Most worthy goals take time to accomplish and because of this, the ability to delay gratification is one of the most important emotional skills one can possess. In addition patience, persistence, organization and timing are also needed to achieve meaningful goals.
While it may be true that life has few guarantees, there is one guarantee that if followed will always bring success. Here it is: Definiteness of purpose sustained over time always brings success. Within this guarantee there are three elements. First, you must have a clearly defined purpose, a definite goal. Second, you must continue to work toward the achievement of your goal continually. On this second point some may ask how long. The answer here is until you achieve your goal. And the final element is the achievement of your goal. This formula has brought success, sometimes great success to millions of people. It will bring success to you.
Take a moment to think about everything that is alive. Is there a common purpose to all living things? If you think about this question it’s possible you’ll come to the conclusion that there is one purpose that is shared by all living things – the need to grow! Growth is something that all living things do. Therefore, doesn’t it make sense to say that the purpose of life is to grow? And of course we do grow physically until adulthood. But after this, in order to truly be alive, we must grow in other ways. By developing new skills and personal qualities we can continue to grow and in this way fulfill the purpose of life. If we’re growing into the person we need to be in order to achieve our hearts desires, then we’re living a life that is meaningful to us.
If you have Reiki training, you have a useful tool to help you live your life on purpose. The symbols and techniques in Reiki II can help you define your goals and develop the personal skills and resources needed to achieve them. This process will work, but only if you’re being guided by your heart. Reiki can help you connect with and heal your heart. And help you trust in your heart. The hopes and plans and dreams that have been hidden away in your heart can be awakened and empowered. Yes, what you always knew to be true when you were young is what is true now. The key to life is to follow your heart.
When you act on the guidance that comes from your heart, the whole universe will rise up to help you. And while the tasks that are required of you may seem difficult, once you accept the challenge and begin to do what you need to do, you’ll see that they end up being easier than what you thought. As you move from one accomplishment to another, as certainly you will if you follow this formula, the life of your dreams will unfold before you and become real!
Certainly this is why you were born. Certainly this is what you need to do.

Reiki Heals Concussion
by Terry Sanders, M.D.
In April of 2007, my buddy David Gregory and I were deep in the innards of my ailing computer when my wife Dorothy called, "Terry, that goat is in the yard!"
I had five sheep and one goat, which I used to keep the grass down on my three and a half acres. The goat was a pet, and I knew she wouldn't leave the property, but she was bound to eat some of Dorothy's flowers if I didn't put her up. The sheep were a different story. Half Dorper and half Barbado, they were essentially wild. I had had them for a year, and they were no tamer than the day I had gotten them. They had two speeds—walk and full speed ahead.
I also had two dogs, both Border collies. Micah was timid, quiet, and a good working dog. Susie was the exact opposite. Only two years old, she minded well when no other animal was involved. I had only worked her on the sheep once; she chased and was hard to call off. Instead of driving them to me, she drove them away—not a desirable trait in a Border collie.
David and I went into the yard. The goat was by the pasture gate. The sheep were on the far side of the pasture, behind the barn. It was getting late, and I thought that I would go ahead and shut the sheep and goats in the corral by the barn for the night. There was one problem; my horse was also in the pasture. I would have to turn her away from the corral, as I didn't shut her up at night.
I decided to let Susie pen them. I knew that as soon as she saw them, they would head for the barn at a run. I intended to put her on a lead and take her around the barn, releasing her behind them. I opened the gate a crack to let the goat in, but Susie squeezed past me and was gone like a flash. I thought that she would put the sheep against the back fence and hold them there. I rushed into the pasture, opened the gate into the corral, and then I heard the sheep coming. Susie had gotten behind them and was bringing them as fast as they could come.
This wouldn’t have been a problem, except that the horse was to my left, and I had to drive her back before the sheep got there. I waved an arm at the mare to turn her and then turned back to see that the first of the sheep had rounded the corner. She was going too fast to dodge me and was already airborne—seeing that she didn't have time to turn, she was trying to jump me.
I could see that she was going to hit me in the face, and I started to throw up my arm, but I didn't have time to complete the action before she ducked her head and hit me in the nose and forehead. The impact was so strong that the first part of my body to hit the ground was my shoulders. Then my head slammed into the ground. The other four sheep ran over me. (Each of the sheep weighed a hundred pounds.)
David had seen the whole thing from the pasture gate. He yelled to Dorothy, "Come quick! Terry is bad hurt." My memory of the incident is vivid to that point. I had an excruciating headache. With David's help, I was able to get up and walk into the house. I don't remember anything that happened for the next hour and a half. Dorothy is a Reiki Master. She put me on the Reiki bed and began giving me Reiki.
During this time, her brother, Jim Taylor, was sitting in the Dairy Queen in Bowie, Texas, 17 miles away. Suddenly the thought came to him; I need to go to Dorothy and Terry’s. He immediately got into his truck and started for our place. After giving me Reiki for a few minutes, Dorothy called Jim, who is also a Reiki Master, and learned that he was half a block away. After Jim arrived, the two of them gave me Reiki.
I had a small cut on the bridge of my nose (from my glasses); my eyes were getting black, and my face was beginning to swell. Let me pause here to say that I am an M.D. The usual aftermath from
such a blow is—at the very least, a night in the hospital, with the attendant expense, and, more than
likely, recurrent headaches for at least six months. Add to this my age; I had just turned 84. Old people are very prone to bruising, and they are very susceptible to injury from even a light blow.
I regained consciousness an hour and a half after the accident happened. They told me that while I was unconscious, I kept asking: “What happened; what happened?” This behavior is typical of someone who has had a concussion. When I came to, I felt normal. The small cut over my eye was still there, but all swelling and blackness were gone from my face. The headache was gone. I ate supper and went about my usual pursuits the rest of the evening. I took a nap the following morning, but other than that, I had no ill effects at all. Without Reiki, who knows?

Science and the Human Energy Field
James L. Oschman, Ph.D. is interviewed by William Lee Rand
James Oschman is one of the leading authorities on the scientific understanding of hands-on healing. His extensive background as a scientist and his experience and understanding of holistic healing place him in a unique position to bridge the gap between the academic/medical world and the healing community. His book, Energy Medicine, and his soon-to-be-released new book, Energy Medicine in Therapeutics and Human Performance, are remarkable in the way they easily convey a scientific basis for hands-on healing. His work makes it easy for doctors and scientists to understand and accept Reiki, which is valuable for anyone wanting to place Reiki in hospitals or to work in a clinical or scientific setting. His fascinating ideas and insights give a new perspective on how Reiki works which inspires us to make better use of our skills.
WLR: Can you give us a definition of energy medicine?
JLO: In a sense, all medicine is energy medicine. This may seem trivial, but it makes an important point. Any intervention with a living system involves energy in one form or another. We all have our specialties and interests, and it is challenging to take the step into the energy domain simply because it is the most multidisciplinary pursuit we can undertake, and it can always provide new insights, regardless of our main focus. It is worthwhile for Reiki practitioners to learn a bit of physics and biology so that they can understand the mechanisms involved. It can make your intentions clearer and make the work easier to explain to medical professionals who have a scientific background.
Energy medicine involves understanding how the body creates and responds to electric, magnetic, and electromagnetic fields, including light and sound as well as other forms of energy such as heat, pressure, chemical and elastic energy, and gravity. We are interested in how the body produces these different kinds of energy, and how these energies can be applied to the body for beneficial effects.
It is important for Reiki and other energy therapists to realize that science does not really understand the origin of these various kinds of energy. So if you feel uncertain about what the words mean, if you are bewildered by science, you have good company. The best minds in science, including Albert Einstein, struggled to understand what energy really is and how the various forms of energy relate to each other. The problem is still unsolved at a fundamental level. We say that an electron has an electrical charge, but why it has a charge and just exactly what a charge really is continues to be mysterious to science.
When physicians and scientists react negatively to the term energy medicine, they are forgetting that there are many medical technologies using different forms of energy for diagnosis and treatment. X-rays and MRIs fall into the diagnostic category. Passive measures of the fields produced by the body are also important in diagnosis: electrocardiograms, electroencephalograms, electroretinograms, and electromyograms. Each of these diagnostic tools has a recently developed biomagnetic counterpart: magnetocardiograms, magnetoencephalograms, magnetoretinograms, magnetomyograms, and so on. Every doctor has used an electrocardiogram, an energy medicine diagnostic tool we have had for nearly a century.
Modern researchers have developed the magnetic biopsy, the electrical biopsy, and the optical biopsy. Transcutaneous nerve stimulators, cardiac pacemakers and defibrillators, lasers, electrocautery, and pulsing magnetic field therapy are examples of energy treatment modalities that are part of conventional medicine. Controversial or not, energy medicine based on the use of medical equipment is alive and well in hospitals, clinics, and medical research centers. Reiki and other forms of hands-on healing are another form of energy medicine based on scientifically measurable energy fields emitted from the healer’s hands.
WLR: Has the human energy field (HEF) been demonstrated to exist and can you tell us about the studies that are the most scientifically valid? What instruments have been used and how have measurements been made?
JLO: In a few decades scientists went from a conviction that there is no such thing as an energy field around the human body to a certainty that such fields exist and are medically important. Now doctors are making treatment decisions on the basis of these biofield measurements.
The first human energy field to be well documented was the field of the heart. This research led to the electrocardiogram and was done a century ago by Einthoven, who received a Nobel Prize for his accomplishments in 1924. About a quarter of a century later, Berger measured the electrical fields of the brain, resulting in the medical field of electroencephalography.
The research of Einthoven, Berger, and others established that organs such as the heart and brain produce bioelectric fields that travel through the tissues of the body and that can be recorded with electrodes on the body surface. The electrocardiogram, for example, can be picked up with electrodes placed anywhere on the body, even on the feet.
There is a fundamental law in physics, Ampère’s Law, that says that when currents flow through conductors such as wires or living tissues, magnetic fields must be produced in the surrounding space.
Since living tissues are conductors of electricity, the well-established laws of physics require that the currents set up by the heart and other muscles, and the brain and peripheral nerves, will produce fields in the space around the body. These are called biomagnetic fields.
The biomagnetic field of the heart was first measured in Syracuse, New York, in 1963, using two coils, each with two million turns of wire (see Figure 1A). At about the same time these measurements were being made, a discovery took place in Cambridge, England that revolutionized biomagnetic field measurements and led to a Nobel Prize for Brian Josephson a decade later. Josephson’s discovery led to the development of a very sensitive magnetometer called a SQUID (Superconducting Quantum Interference Device). These magnetometers are now used in medical research labs worldwide to study the human energy field. Figure 1B shows the basic design of a SQUID magnetometer.
It is important to appreciate that the standard methods of recording electrical fields with electrodes on the skin surface (as in the electrocardiogram and electroencephalogram) provide much less information than the corresponding biomagnetic measurements. The reason for this is that the electrical resistances of the various tissues vary by a factor of about thirty. Bioelectric fields generated within the body by tissues such as the heart and brain take the paths of least electrical resistance, so the patterns measured at the body surface are sort of smeared out and difficult to interpret. In contrast, the magnetic permeabilities of the various tissues are all about the same as in a vacuum. In essence, the tissues are transparent to magnetic fields. So the biomagnetic measurements are a lot more informative about what is happening inside the body than are the bioelectric measurements.
This is an important point for energy therapists because a magnetic sense, if it exists, will provide much more information on what is going on within the body than will measurements of electrical fields from electrodes on the skin surface. And there is a good scientific basis for the existence of a magnetic sense in the human body. In fact, scientists from Milan, Italy have shown that tissues may exhibit the same Josephson effect that is the basis for the SQUID magnetometer.
WLR: In various kinds of therapy we refer to healing energy. What do you think of this term?
JLO:This term has long been contentious in academic circles, but attitudes are changing due to some basic medical research. Much credit is due to the late C. Andrew L. Bassett and his colleagues at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York for their persistence in overcoming entrenched skepticism and daunting regulatory hurdles to bring pulsing electromagnetic field therapy (PEMF) for bone healing into mainstream medicine. The research showed that certain magnetic fields can jump-start the healing process in fractures that have failed to heal, even for as long as forty years. Bassett and his colleagues at Columbia also researched the use of PEMFs on other musculoskeletal problems, and had considerable success. These problems include osteoarthritis, osteonecrosis, osteochondritis dessecans, osteogenesis imperfecta, and osteoporosis.
The first FDA approval for magnetic field therapy was obtained in 1979. Subsequent work showed that healing in other tissues can be jump-started with fields pulsing at different frequencies. Figure 2A shows the bone healing device, in which coils of wire placed near the fracture site induce current flows in the bone.
The important frequencies for stimulating tissue repair are all in the biologically important extremely low frequency (ELF) range. Two cycles per second (Hz) is effective for nerve regeneration, seven Hz is optimal for bone growth, ten Hz is used for ligaments, and somewhat higher frequencies work for skin and capillaries.
The induction phenomenon was described by Michael Faraday in England in 1831. He showed that moving a magnet near a conductor induces a measurable current flow in the conductor. Faraday’s Law of Induction is a basic law of electromagnetism. It is the basis for a modern science called magnetobiology, which explores the effects of magnetic fields on living systems.
What is important about all of this is evidence that practitioners of various hands-on and hands-off therapies such as Reiki, acupressure, aura balancing, Bowen, cranialsacral, Structural Integration (Rolfing), healing touch, Polarity Therapy, massage, and Zero Balancing can emit ELF signals from their hands. This was discovered in a valuable study by Dr. John Zimmerman. His results are shown in Figure 2B. He found that this pulsing field is produced by the hands of practitioners of Therapeutic Touch and Healing Touch, but non-practitioners do not produce such signals.
Zimmerman found that the pulsing field produced by the hands of practitioners is not steady in frequency, but varies from moment to moment. The frequency sweeps up and down through the very same range of frequencies in the ELF band that medical researchers have identified as being effective for jump starting the healing process in the various tissues they have investigated.
Hence we have uncovered a major synergy between clinical biomedicine and complementary medicine. It seems likely that one effect of the various hands-on and non-contact energy therapies is to introduce into tissues the same healing frequencies that medical researchers have identified as key to tissue healing (see Figure 2C). Moreover, careful medical research on the mechanism by which these signals affect cells applies equally to conventional and complementary therapies.
The basic physics of induction is important because it helps explain some of the effects of Reiki, laying on of hands, and other hands-on and hands-off therapies. In essence, the biomagnetic fields produced by a practitioner’s hands can induce current flows in the tissues and cells of individuals who are in close proximity. Evidence that this actually can occur is nicely summarized in a fascinating paper entitled “The Electricity of Touch” and in a book entitled Science of the Heart published by the Institute of HeartMath in Boulder Creek, California.
As a result of these discoveries, I have suggested a definition that is also a hypothesis: Healing energy, whether produced by a medical device or projected from the human body, is energy of a particular frequency or set of frequencies that stimulates the repair of one or more tissues.

Reiki Helps Shingles Pain
I have been a Reiki Master for about 4 four years. A friend of one of my clients, who is almost 80 years old, stated that she had been suffering with the pain of shingles (with several outbreaks) for many years; she stated that she also has osteoporosis and arthritis. She came to me requesting a Reiki session, wondering if it would help with her unbearable shingle pain. The area of her shingles outbreak at that time was behind her right knee, but she had had a severe outbreak on her right chest and back several years earlier and still suffers the post-shingles pain there also. She told me that not one day goes by that she doesn’t have some kind of pain, and that she does not like to take any pain medications. During the session she pulled such energy through me that my hands and wrists became red hot! After the hour-long session, she stated that for the first time in a long time...she had " “absolutely no pain ANYWHERE . " ” . I spoke with her later and asked how she was doing. She stated that she continued to have " “no pain for 2 two weeks " ” following the session, and that the area of breakout subsided quickly. She told me that she shares her experience with Reiki with all her friends. Jana
Getting Reiki Into A Hospital
As a new Reiki Master, I was eager to share Reiki with everyone. Without knowing there were actually limitations, I charged forward and approached our hospital oncology center with the idea of establishing a Reiki evening for their patients. After a one-hour presentation, they whole-heartedly accepted! After I received the news and shared it with other hospital personnel, I was told it should have been impossible to establish a Reiki share Share due to hospital policy. Well, Reiki came through anyway!!! We are in our sixth month of once-a-month free Reiki for cancer patients, and our patient load has tripled, making it necessary for us to move to a larger space within our medical center. Our volunteers have been dedicated, and all of them admit that they possibly gain more peace and comfort than the patients who receive Reiki. What a gift Reiki has been in my life and the lives of those who share Reiki with others. Patricia Scheder
Reiki Heals Ear Infection
A few years ago a lady came to me for a Reiki treatment. Not knowing of her condition, I began my session, , but while working around her ears noticed something terribly wrong around her left ear. After completion of the session, I inquired if she had something wrong in that area. She told me she was scheduled for surgery the following morning because of an inner ear infection that doctors had been unable to correct after a number of months of treatments. She went back to the hospital that night, and the next morning she called saying the surgery had been cancelled because sometime during the night her ear had broken open, and whatever was inside had run out onto her pillow. The doctors had no explanation, but she said she knew it was because of the Reiki treatment. She went on to say that after the treatment something started moving inside her ear, and she had a peaceful feeling that she had never experienced before. John Prior
