Reiki and the Healing Crisis by Diane Ruth Shewmaker Healing
Defined The many complementary and alternative practices available today,
including Reiki, have varying ways of approaching healing, yet all share a common
holistic philosophy that seeks to address the entire person. This approach views
every symptom of "dis-ease" that you may be experiencing as having a
corresponding physical, psychological, mental, and/or spiritual component that
is contributing to the cause of the concern. Healing is therefore defined
within a much broader framework than simply addressing a physical or psychological
symptom or attempting to cure a disease. In fact, healing is truly a way of life
when held in this context, and is an ongoing process that never stops presenting
you with opportunities for growth and transformation. Although many people
have reported spontaneous healing of their health conditions or imbalances, deep
healing of the total person often involves a process that takes place over time
and is not always a tidy, linear process. Rather, healing tends to follow a pattern
that spirals and re-cycles over and over again, peeling away the layers of each
concern until the healing is complete. This is because the original issue
or symptom is most often related to more than one aspect of a person's life, and
very likely involves shifting the patterning found in all levels of the energy
field. (See my article titled "Reiki and the Human Energy System" in
the Winter 2002 edition of this magazine for a more detailed description of the
different levels of the human energy system.) Reiki and other energy healing
modalities work with and positively affect the human energy system, and are noninvasive
hands-on healing approaches that gently support healing at all levels. The universal
healing energy of Reiki harmonizes your physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual
bodies by grounding the essential life force within your energy system, which
expands your capacity to carry more light and love. This activates your
innate healing resources, supporting the healing of acute and chronic disease
as well as anxiety, fatigue, depression, stress, addictions, and other symptoms
of imbalance. Other reported benefits include deep relaxation, stress reduction,
clearing of addictive patterns, emotional stability, and better self-esteem. The
Purification Process A great deal of purification and cleansing takes place
when working with Reiki as part of the healing process. As such, it is important
for you to inform each person with whom you are working about the healing process
and be a part of his or her support system. Care must be taken to describe the
process in a way that is thorough, yet does not cause undue worry or concern.
You want to avoid creating a self-fulfilling prophecy or the expectation of always
being in some form of crisis or drama, since this is most often not the case. The
flow of Reiki energy through the physical and subtle bodies encourages the gradual
release of physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual "toxins" that
have made their way into the cellular memory and built up in the energy system
over time. Toxic buildup is the result of past experiences such as injuries, illnesses,
and traumatic events as well as poor health habits and pollutants in this and
other lifetimes. Much of the release experience is relatively gentle, does
not take a great deal of time to work through your system, and passes almost without
notice. Sometimes, however, the manifestations of the cleansing process are more
noticeable and uncomfortable and may take several hours, days, or even weeks or
months to work their way through the energy system. The cleansing experience
may also be heightened following a Reiki attunement or a series of treatments,
because both can greatly accelerate the clearing and healing process. This is
sometimes called a "healing crisis," which is defined as a time during
the release process when old symptoms temporarily resurface, moving you from the
chronic stage back through the acute phase of the problem while on the way to
true healing. As toxins are released from all levels of your being, you
may experience one or more of the following symptoms: flu-like symptoms, fever,
headache, sore throat, coughing, aching joints and muscles, tingling sensations,
nausea, constipation, and diarrhea. Temporary changes may also take place in your
sleep habits such as needing to sleep more often and longer or being wide awake
when you normally sleep. Deeply held emotions that have been repressed from
earlier experiences such as grief, fear, depression, sadness, anger, and frustration
may surface for no obvious reason. There may also be times when suppressed memories
or other recollections surface in order to allow the body and spirit to heal.
You may also feel empty and alone. Old and current behavior patterns found in
the mental body may become magnified. You may also experience judgmental, blaming,
victimizing, and abusive thoughts. As the spiritual body is purified, your beliefs
about life, religion, relationships, how the world operates, and your self-identity
may be shaken and will need to be questioned and revised. As uncomfortable
emotions and thought patterns from your shadow self come into your consciousness,
simply allow yourself to observe and experience them without getting too caught
up in them. Think of this process as a train where each of the cars is marked
with an emotion such as sadness or thoughts of self-invalidation. As the train
comes through your consciousness, just let it move along without stopping it and
climbing aboard any of the cars. Acknowledge the old emotions and thoughts as
they pass through you as how you once felt, and then let them go. Welcome
your new understanding of those old limiting beliefs that no longer serve you
and have the courage to let them go. As the well-known expression says, "Let
go and let God." Form a new spiritual foundation based on true wisdom, inspiration,
and understanding. Read uplifting books and spend time with like-minded people.
Meditate and look within for your own answers. Do breathing exercises to bring
the life force into your body. Chant sacred sounds. Remember to call on your spirit
guides and angels, the ascended masters, and the Source for assistance, while
staying grounded and connected to Mother Earth. All of the uncomfortable
experiences that accompany a healing crisis are commonplace and are not usually
cause for worry or concern. They naturally result from the process of bringing
the flow of Reiki into the energy system. They are nature's way of purifying body,
mind, emotions, and the soul, making way for higher levels of consciousness to
be grounded in the body. Rather than being symptoms of illness, they can be viewed
as signs of true healing in progress. It is also important to note that the symptoms
of a healing crisis are not caused by Reiki, rather, the Reiki energy helps to
bringing awareness and healing to those imbalances that are already active within
you. However, if you have any severe or continuing physical or emotional
reactions, or other complications after receiving a Reiki treatment or attunement,
it is recommended that you visit your regular healthcare provider right away.
It is always important to remember that Reiki is a modality complementary to traditional
medical and psychological care. As a Reiki practitioner, be sure to stay within
the boundaries of your competencies and any licensing credentials that you may
have.

Reiki Stories
Reiki
Heals Strokes First of all, let me say how good it is to know that you
are on the mend and continuing your excellent work to share healing information
with others. I had your picture right next to Mari's on my healing grid for quite
a while, both surrounded by Reiki-charged rose quartz-my small energy contribution
in response to your request for Reiki following the heart attacks. I
have been a Reiki and Karuna Reiki® Practitioner and Master for several years.
I took the Karuna Reiki Course with you and Laurelle at Camp Ronora in September
1999 (in the same group as Arjava Petter) and attended a workshop Mari gave at
the Reiki Retreat in New York in September 2002. I was excited to read
Mari Hall's article on the successful use of Reiki in the treatment of strokes
at the rehabilitation phase and wanted to share my personal experiences with the
very successful use of Reiki at the early stages of strokes in the past few years.
On New Year's Day of 2002, my father-in-law had a stroke in Sri Lanka.
My husband, Nimi, and I were traveling in Australia at the time. Nimi cut short
his trip and went to be with his father. I stayed in Australia. We both worked
immediately and extensively on channeling Reiki for his dad. Nimi worked in person,
and I sent distant healing from Australia. My father-in-law was 79 years old,
and the stroke left him completely paralyzed on the left side of his body, with
very little hope of regaining mobility or normalcy. Within three months, he was
walking with the help of a cane. He continued with physiotherapy, and we continued
to send him Reiki whenever we were guided to. In August 2002, I danced with my
father-in-law at a family wedding. There's a lot more to this story. This
is the short version. I had given him the Reiki I attunement when he visited us
in the U.S. the previous year. I'm not really sure if he channeled Reiki for himself
or not, but I'm sure this had an effect as well in his amazing recovery.
In October 2003, a few hours after a Reiki II class in which I had given attunements,
Nimi and I were at a movie and I felt my vision blur. I thought that I was having
a bout of vertigo, as I had experienced them off and on over the past several
years. Shortly after that, I felt numbness on the right side of my face that slowly
continued down the right side of my body to my leg. I knew intuitively that I
was having a stroke and told Nimi to call an ambulance. I gave myself Reiki until
the ambulance arrived and continued to do so all the way to the hospital, while
I was being examined, and afterwards. I was lucid and coherent throughout, and
apparently showed very little neurological disturbance except that my face felt
numb and I could not walk on my own. I continued to give myself Reiki, as did
many others who knew what had happened. A day later, I was able to walk on my
own, although unsteadily. Two days later, I walked out of the hospital, a little
shaky and unbalanced, but holding my own!!! Two days after my stroke,
the MRI showed that my stroke was caused by bleeding near the brain stem. It made
complete sense to me that Reiki stopped the bleeding immediately so that the damage
to my brain was minimal. I had an intuitive healer look at what happened to me,
and she confirmed that the self-healing work I had done while the stroke was happening
had prevented a much larger catastrophe. She also saw the healing effect of Reiki
on my father-in-law. Peace, love, and light! Suchinta Abhayaratna (was Wijesooriya) Reiki
and Infertility I am a Reiki master. A few years ago, a co-worker came
to me and asked if Reiki could help infertility. She and her husband had been
trying to conceive a baby for three years. Believing that Reiki can help anything
if it is the will of God, I said, "Let's try it." I gave her
a full Reiki session one day after work, and in two weeks she was pregnant. She
asked me to come to the hospital when she delivered. It was such an honor. Every
time she had a contraction, I placed my hands on her belly. Little Erin was born,
and they placed her in a warming bed. She was crying, and I went over and sent
her some energy. She stopped crying immediately and got such a peaceful look on
her face. Now the Mom has Reiki level one training and a second little girl. This
experience was one of the highlights of my Reiki practice. Pat Schuster Mom's
Battle with Cancer Shortly after Christmas 2003, my mom was diagnosed with
cancer of the lungs and the pancreas. It progressed quite quickly, and the choice
of treatment by the family was drug therapy. As I watched and saw that
the treatment was not totally eliminating the pain, I offered to do a Reiki session
on her. She was a little hesitant at first. She knew I was into alternative stuff
like this and believed in UFOs. But she agreed. After about three to four minutes
of Reiki, she exclaimed, "Oh my God. What are you doing? It feels like you
are sticking thousands of needles in my back." I asked her if she wanted
me to stop, and she replied, "No," because the pain in her spinal column
was going away. She then cried out to my Dad to come into the bedroom and see
what I was doing. From that day on, she asked for a Reiki session whenever
I visited. I ended up developing a Reiki session team that would send long-distance
healing to her when we couldn't go to her. At one point a friend and I were doing
a session on her and she pulled this friend close to her and whispered, "I
use to think he was crazy, but now I know he is not!" Daryl Stangl Emergency
Reiki Helps Heart Condition A few weeks after taking my first initiation in
Reiki, I went to the supermarket in a hurry because my mom had just arrived home
from the hospital and she needed some fruits and vegetables.
I was almost
running to avoid my mother having to wait for me, and I was on my way to the cashier.
I saw a couple that caught my attention because she was short with big, beautiful
eyes and he was very tall and big. I continued walking on, but suddenly something
told me to go back to see the couple again. They were in the same spot,
and the woman was holding her hand to her chest and her eyes were bigger. The
man was frozen. I approached them and asked the woman what happened, and almost
in a whisper she told me that last week she had had open-heart surgery, and now
she had tachycardia. She was in a panic! The only thing that occurred to me was
to ask if she would allow me to help her because I knew a therapy. I got
a chair and she sat down. I asked her if I could touch her; she said yes, and
I put one of my hands on her chest and the other on her back. I just prayed
to God to be there with us and asked her in a whisper if she believed in God.
She said yes, and then I said, "God is with us in this very moment."
In a few minutes, she was in very good shape. It was my first experience in Reiki
and will leave an imprint in my heart. Since then I have followed my instincts.
Berta de los Rios Reiki Heals Lump in Breast I am a second-degree
Reiki practitioner, and my sister trained me. I have seen so many miracles in
the time since I have been certified that I truly believe in Reiki. I have always
felt a calling, if you will, to something greater than just the "day-to-day"
understanding of life. Prior to Reiki, I had taken some tests, a mammogram
and then a sonogram. The findings were a lump in my left breast, and they wanted
me to go for an MRI. In the interim, my sister invited me up to a training class
for Reiki that she was giving, which I graciously accepted as I was grasping at
hope and my faith was all but a fading light on a burnt-out candle. I went and
had an intensive three-day training in Reiki 1 and 2, and passed! She does put
me through the grinder, you know, little sister and all! I came home glowing!
I felt so complete and together! Nothing could drag me down! I went for
the MRI and continued the self-Reiki and MAP sessions that I was taught. Two weeks
after the MRI, I finally called for answers and was told that there were no unusual
tissues, no masses, and no lumps in either breast and that all was clean and negative!
I am so grateful. I have the ability to help myself and others through Reiki,
and I intend to make it a very intimate and necessary part of my life! I am so
glad I have taken the steps to a more spiritual, universal, and healing future.
Thank you and most of all thanks to my sister, Jeanne Boyce, R.M., who brought
this into my life! Love and peace to all! Mary Lapinski, York, PA Reiki
and Dentistry I passed my bachelor's degree in dentistry June 2003, and
I am doing my internship at City Dental College, Dhaka, Bangladesh. I got the
opportunity to learn Reiki about a year back. Since then I've been practicing
Reiki with my daily dental practice. During my placement in the Department
of Oral Surgery and Anesthesiology, I received many unexpected but fruitful outcomes
with Reiki. One of the most fascinating was while I was extracting a lower third
molar. I was heading for my department, and on the way I saw a middle-aged
woman with a pitiful-looking face and her hand over her left cheek. After entering
the room, one of the clerks introduced me to her. She was about 40 years old.
She was a poor lady who made her living by washing clothes, and she had come from
far away, from Dhaka, just for the treatment of her toothache. I examined her
intraorally and found she had a badly broken and tender lower left third molar
with much of the crown broken. I suggested an X-ray, but the local anesthesia
did not work properly due to the acidic pH of pus. In this case, there was no
complaint of pain and the badly broken tooth came out easily without any bone
removal or tooth sectioning. I then curetted and irrigated the socket thoroughly
and gave her a cotton pack. She was still cooperative, calm, and satisfied overall.
Just then, the head of my department arrived, and even he was surprised to see
that such a tooth came out so easily. She left with blessings and gratitude. I
gave her few analgesics, but I could not give her antibiotics. That night
I sent Reiki through distant healing technique. The patient came to meet me after
a few weeks, and unexpectedly, she was completely well and she told me that she
didn't even have to use the analgesics I gave her. She was poor, but she gave
me one of the most expensive gifts a patient could ever give to a doctor, her
satisfaction and gratitude. Dr. Bibek Nakarmi
