Reiki and Pregnancy
by William Lee Rand
I often receive questions concerning Reiki and pregnancy and
one of the main questions is if it is safe to treat a pregnant
woman. There are many myths and misconceptions about Reiki and
the idea that Reiki should not be given to pregnant women is
one of them. So, the answer is YES, Reiki is safe for pregnant
women! In fact, Reiki works well in helping with all stages
of pregnancy including conception and child birth. Reiki provides
emotional as well as physical support and works not only on
the mother, but also on the child. Remember, Reiki cannot cause
harm and always works to reduce stress and improve health regardless
of the condition. However, it is important to make sure that
one's own personal energy does not become involved with the
treatment. To ensure this, say a prayer before giving a treatment
asking that your own ego and personal energy will be set to
the side and that only pure Reiki energy will flow through you.
Also pray on behalf of the mother and child that they will be
nurtured and deeply healed by Reiki. This will help the treatment
work in a more powerful way.
Treatments before conception can focus on creating a balanced,
loving and harmonious relationship between the parents and toward
the future child which likely will be present in spirit. In
addition to giving a general treatment, also treat the heart,
solar plexus and hips. (Be careful not to touch the genital
area or the breasts. Treat these areas only in the aura and
only with permission). At this stage, treat the husband also
if possible as it is important that loving, nurturing and healthy
emotional feelings be strengthened between the parents.
If the parents are willing, it would be very helpful if they
took Reiki training so they can treat themselves and each other
also. In the same way that Reiki treatments are safe for pregnant
woman, so is the training and attunement. Before the attunement,
simply say a prayer acknowledging the fact that the student
is pregnant and that the baby is present. If the parents have
Reiki, suggest that they give each other treatments everyday!
During pregnancy, in addition to a general treatment, treat
the mothers back focusing on the areas of greatest stress and
also treat the stomach area which will treat the baby as well.
During child birth, treat the stomach and lower back, or simply
give Reiki to the mother's shoulders or where ever you are guided.
Reiki master Mari Hall wrote an interesting article on this
subject describing how she worked with an infertile couple,
used Reiki to help them conceive, then gave treatments during
pregnancy and during the birthing process. Her article, Reiki
and Fertility appears in the winter edition of the hard
copy Reiki
News magazine.
Science and the Human Energy Field
James L. Oschman, Ph.D. is interviewed by William Lee Rand
This is an excerpt from a full length article that will appear
in the winter edition of the hard copy Reiki
News magazine.
James Oschman is one of the leading authorities on the scientific
understanding of hands-on healing. His extensive background
as a scientist and his experience and understanding of holistic
healing place him in a unique position to bridge the gap between
the academic/medical world and the healing community. His book,
Energy Medicine, and his soon-to-be-released new book, Energy
Medicine in Therapeutics and Human Performance, are remarkable
in the way they easily convey a scientific basis for hands-on
healing. His work makes it easy for doctors and scientists to
understand and accept Reiki, which is valuable for anyone wanting
to place Reiki in hospitals or to work in a clinical or scientific
setting. His fascinating ideas and insights give a new perspective
on how Reiki works which inspires us to make better use of our
skills.
WLR: Has the human energy field (HEF) been demonstrated
to exist and can you tell us about the studies that are the
most scientifically valid? What instruments have been used and
how have measurements been made?
JLO: In a few decades scientists went from a conviction
that there is no such thing as an energy field around the human
body to a certainty that such fields exist and are medically
important. Now doctors are making treatment decisions on the
basis of these biofield measurements.
Since living tissues are conductors of electricity, the well-established
laws of physics require that the currents set up by the heart
and other muscles, and the brain and peripheral nerves, will
produce fields in the space around the body. These are called
biomagnetic fields.
The biomagnetic field of the heart was first measured in Syracuse,
New York, in 1963, using two coils, each with two million turns
of wire. At about the same time these measurements were being
made, a discovery took place in Cambridge, England that revolutionized
biomagnetic field measurements and led to a Nobel Prize for
Brian Josephson a decade later. Josephson's discovery led to
the development of a very sensitive magnetometer called a SQUID
(Superconducting Quantum Interference Device). These magnetometers
are now used in medical research labs worldwide to study the
human energy field.
It is important to appreciate that the standard methods of
recording electrical fields with electrodes on the skin surface
(as in the electrocardiogram and electroencephalogram) provide
much less information than the corresponding biomagnetic measurements.
The reason for this is that the electrical resistances of the
various tissues vary by a factor of about thirty. Bioelectric
fields generated within the body by tissues such as the heart
and brain take the paths of least electrical resistance, so
the patterns measured at the body surface are sort of smeared
out and difficult to interpret. In contrast, the magnetic permeabilities
of the various tissues are all about the same as in a vacuum.
In essence, the tissues are transparent to magnetic fields.
So the biomagnetic measurements are a lot more informative about
what is happening inside the body than are the bioelectric measurements.
This is an important point for energy therapists because a
magnetic sense, if it exists, will provide much more information
on what is going on within the body than will measurements of
electrical fields from electrodes on the skin surface. And there
is a good scientific basis for the existence of a magnetic sense
in the human body. In fact, scientists from Milan, Italy have
shown that tissues may exhibit the same Josephson effect that
is the basis for the SQUID magnetometer.
WLR: Is there a biological basis for some people being
able to see or otherwise sense the HEF?
JLO: There is an effect in physics that is also named
for Michael Faraday and is called the Faraday Effect. Magnetic
fields alter the polarization of light. Now, the eye is very
sensitive to the polarization of light, and I believe some people
have the ability to sense the energy field of the body by tuning
into the way the field alters the polarization of light. Some
people are born with a heightened sensitivity of this kind and
others pick it up later in life. I think it is this kind of
vision that enables some people to see the layering of the human
energy field.
Another mechanism that may be involved is the discovery by
a number of scientists that the retina of the eye is a magnetic
receptor as well as a light receptor. Some of the best research
has been on honey bees. They use magnetic information for navigation.
This research is quite sophisticated in that neurophysiologists
have found specific nerves from the eye that send signals when
a magnet is brought close to the eye. Whether the visual system
can actually form a magnetic image of its environment is an
interesting topic for further study.
The two approaches give somewhat different kinds of information
about the human energy field. My goal is to see how these observations
can be fitted together to provide a more complete picture than
either approach can provide alone, and this is precisely what
is happening.
WLR: The Reiki attunement is a unique part of Reiki
training. A person does not have to train to gain the ability
to give Reiki energy treatments. The ability is passed on to
the student through an attunement process given by the teacher.
The attunement seems to turn on the student's ability to channel
Reiki and there is a noticeable difference in the strength of
healing energy students have before and after the attunement.
Is there anything in your understanding of biology or science
that would provide an explanation for how this is possible?
JLO: As with other aspects of energy medicine, it is
possible to suggest hypotheses for testing. My suspicion is
that what is being passed during the attunement process is a
frequency or a set of frequencies that can be transferred from
a teacher to a student via the energy field and that will always
be remembered by the student. The memory process is probably
similar to that involved in homeopathy, in which the electromagnetic
signature of a substance is transferred to water. While some
scientists have viewed the idea of memory in water with great
suspicion, others are doing research to find out how it works.
Some good hypotheses have been developed for this. The human
body contains a water system that is a veritable antenna for
fields in the environment, and it could well be this water system
that picks up the frequencies and remembers them much as water
can remember the signal from a homeopathic remedy.

Welcome .
the
third edition of our hard copy magazine has gone to the printer and
will be available December 3. We've continued to improve and
have worked hard on this issue. In fact the magazine has expanded
by 50 percent to include over 35 pages of articles! All written
by accomplished Reiki authors and teachers who are providing
you with some of their best experiences and thinking on the
subject of Reiki.
One of the areas of interest
that often comes up in Reiki classes and in the emails I receive
involves the human energy system (HES). People want to know
what it is, why it is important, and most of all, what role
it plays in the practice of Reiki. Questions about this topic
come up a lot, but there doesn't seem to be much information
available. One reason is that the original hand positions taught
in the West involve placing the hands on the body and not in
the aura. This was fostered by Mrs. Takata, who didn't include
information in her classes about the chakras or the aura or
how to treat them with Reiki. The same is true in Japan; with the exception of byosen scanning, not much
attention is given to the aura and chakras there, either.
This is puzzling as Reiki,
being a subtle energy, works directly on and through the HES.
The value of this cannot be overstated, as the HES forms the
very basis of our health and creates the foundation of our consciousness.
A good understanding of this important, but little-mentioned,
aspect of Reiki healing can greatly
enhance your use of Reiki. At the same time, it can also increase
your comprehension of life itself.
Included in this issue
are a number of articles written by well-known Reiki authors,
which we hope you will find to provide a very through description
of the HES. Diane Shewmaker gives us an exceptionally
clear overview of the HES and explains how to restore balance
and harmony by treating the aura with Reiki. Walter Lübeck continues with his article on the chakras and includes
information on healing stones and how to use them to treat the
chakras, along with other interesting techniques. Penelope
Quest shows us how to detect the aura and chakras with dowsing
rods and with our hands, and even how to see them. Doing this
provides us with a personal experience of the HES by allowing
us to interact with it directly which is necessary if we are
to use Reiki to heal it. Laurelle Shanti Gaia introduces
us to the Soul Chakras, which adds greater depth to our understanding
of the HES and additional healing possibilities. The interview
with James Oschman, Ph.D. grounds our understanding of
the HES in the world of science and provides new perspectives
on healing and how Reiki works. This interview provides one
of the most interesting explanations of healing and Reiki I
have ever read. This information will be most helpful to anyone
wanting to work with the medical community as it provides proof
that Reiki exists and has value! Mari Hall shares her
experience using Reiki to help an infertile couple conceive
and give birth to a child. And finally, our Reiki Stories section
gives inspiration and hope that Reiki can help us solve serious
difficulties.
If you already have a subscription,
I invite you to take the time to read and study the material
offered in the winter edition and to experiment with it. As
we improve our use of Reiki, not only do we help others, we
also make the world a better place to live. May
you be blessed by the love and healing that flows through you
to others.

Reiki Stories
Reiki and Uterine Cancer
Six years ago while a Level Two Reiki healer I was witness to
an extraordinary healing of a woman diagnosed with cancer. My
Reiki Master (Colleen Chauntler of Gladstone, Australia) was
staying with me at the time. A woman was brought to my home
presenting a distended lower abdomen and we were told by her
friends that she had been sick for some months. In the week
prior to this visit she had a scan and had been told by doctors
that she had a large tumour in her uterus that was probably
cancerous. Surgery was planned for the following week. We decided
to give her three sessions of Reiki healing throughout the week,
hoping that would encourage rapid healing for her after her
surgery. Rather than the usual hand positions, three of us worked
on her-my Reiki Master held her hands on the patient's lower
abdomen, I had my hands on her head (crown) and another Level
Two healer (Sharon Honatana) was at her feet. We stayed like
that for approximately an hour each session.
On the day she was to check in to the hospital I saw a large
black energy in the shape of a ball and surrounded by what appeared
to be sparking energy lift from her abdomen and rise up into
the air. It kept rising and disappeared through the ceiling
of the room. I asked if anyone else had seen it and each of
the others confirmed the same thing, including the patient.
She duly went on to check in to the hospital, and when they
examined her they could not feel the tumour; they sent her for
a scan and it had gone. She told us with great humour that the
doctors were arguing and quite flustered at the result. They
eventually went on to do an exploratory operation but no tumour
could be found. She had therapy for the few cancer cells they
did find and is fit and healthy now.
The woman believes she was healed by Satya Sai Baba and Reiki.
On the night before her last session she said she dreamed she
was in her car and it was teetering on the edge of a cliff.
Below her was blackness; in her rear-vision mirror she could
see a long road, and walking along this road was Sai Baba. He
came toward her car and stood looking at her. She cried out
to him to help her and he reached down and pulled her car off
the edge of the cliff and placed it back on the road. Penelope

Reiki and Prostate Cancer
With the thought of promoting Reiki, I called an assisted-living
center to offer an Introduction to Reiki class with free mini-Reiki
sessions. When I asked the social director if he was familiar
with Reiki he said, "Let me tell you my story," and
proceeded to tell me that he had been recently diagnosed with
prostate cancer. His massage therapist, Reiki Level II, had
been told by a psychic that he (the social director) needed
to receive three treatments in close succession by three Reiki
healers. I quickly set things in motion and our team performed
Reiki on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday. No other treatment
was given. Prior to treatment his test confirmed he was 4.0
and his doctor diagnosed that he had prostate cancer. The Monday
after we completed the three treatments he was again tested.
On the following Wednesday he called to say the test results
showed 0.3 and that he was free of cancer. He remarked that
in all of his life the test results were never that low. I am
so honored to have been a part of his healing. I feel honored
to be called by Reiki, a major part of my life. Phran Gacher,
Stamford, Connecticut
Reiki and Heart Attacks
Without a sound, a man collapsed, sliding silently from his
chair and onto the floor. People crowded around him, and one
person, a Reiki Level One, began hands-on while I went into
another room. I could clearly feel his heart beat. It was very
faint and squishy (a technical term?).
As energy began to flow, a slightly different connection was
made and I found that my heart was beating for his. That was
new to me, but it added a lot of depth to Usui-Sensei's statement
to "Always expect there to be oneness." The man was
sitting up by the time the paramedics arrived.
Less than a week later, a friend phoned. She had just called
911; her husband was having a heart attack. His heartbeat was
entirely different: fluttery and erratic, a bit like static
on the radio. Again the link was made allowing my heart to beat
for his. He too was sitting up when the paramedics arrived.
Similar scenes have happened over the years-similar, yet each
one entirely different. Panic attacks respond in a similar manner,
except that the victims' breathing and heart rate move into
synch with mine. There seems to be a definite increase in panic
attacks nowadays. W. Craig
Reiki and Two-Story Fall
On July 10 of this year I fell two stories onto concrete while
practicing a rope rescue technique. Luckily my friends surrounded
me. A friend I took Reiki I and II with immediately placed her
hands on me, before I even thought about what was happening.
I was able to be transported by private vehicle to the hospital,
and experienced minimal pain. The emergency room physician was
very surprised to see my X-rays. My left ankle was fractured
and dislocated and I had suffered a T-12 compression fracture.
Despite this, my ankle was not swollen and was mobile with a
good pulse. I required no narcotic analgesics until transfer
to a trauma facility one hour away.
Reiki, along with aromatherapy, massage, and yoga, continues
to be an important part of my recovery. Thanks to Heather, my
teachers, and the great Reiki masters for the great healing.

Reiki Heals Bird
This is an incident which occurred when I did Reiki Level I
way back in 1997. My son, who was then four years old, and I
went to our garage to take our bicycles for a ride. To our surprise
we found a bird lying down, unable to flap its wings and making
a feeble attempt to fly. I said to my son, "Lets give Reiki,"
and I went ahead and without touching the bird gave Reiki. Lo
and behold, after some time it flapped its wings energetically
and flew off!
Both of us were pleasantly surprised and happy, too. My son
now knows what Reiki can do, and often when he is tired or has
any pains due to play or whatever, or before going to sleep,
asks me to give him Reiki. This has left an impression which
he will remember throughout. I have so many live examples to
share but this should convince other first-timers to seek and
experience Reiki to have full conviction on the effectiveness
of Reiki in day-to-day life. Love and Light, T. S. Srinivasan,
