The Attunement Experience
by Penny Quest
This is an excerpt from an article in the spring
edition of the hard copy Reiki News Magazine. Note
that the summer
edition is also available now.
At each level of attunement (Reiki 1, 2 or 3) you become able
to tap into a higher, wider channel of that Universal Energy,
and the vibration rate of your energy body is increased. After
an attunement is over, students often describe the beautiful
spiritual or mystical experiences they have received, such as
"seeing" wonderful colors, visions or past life experiences.
Others report receiving personal messages or profound healing,
sensing the presence of guides or angelic beings, or simply
having a feeling of complete peace. Some people go through a
real shift in their awareness immediately afterwards, describing
the sensation as almost like being reborn, so that they experience
everything around them more intensely - colors are brighter,
their sense of smell is enhanced, and sounds are sharper. Others
feel a buzzing or heightened sensitivity in the crown centre
for a short while, or describe a sense of floating or light-headedness.
All of these reactions are absolutely normal - but so is experiencing
very little, which whilst a little disappointing for some students,
does not mean the attunement hasn't worked! An attunement always
works. The success rate is 100% all of the time. It is not possible
to fail a Reiki course, provided a qualified Reiki Master carries
out the attunement process with you. You will be able to channel
Reiki. But you may or may not necessarily feel anything, at
least at first.
I am one of the lucky ones, however, as I have always had interesting
reactions during and after my attunements as a Reiki student.
For example, when I received the Tibetan/Usui Master attunement
from William Lee Rand I had an amazing experience, where I felt
I was "transported" from Newcastle-upon-Tyne in England,
back to Tibet, to a Tibetan monastery high up in the Himalayas,
and I found myself kneeling before my Buddhist teacher, receiving
a Healing Empowerment. My body in Newcastle apparently moved
in accordance with the instructions of my Buddhist teacher,
rather than with William's requirements to sit still, and I
could feel myself bending far forward, holding my hands out
in front of me with my head bowed, and then bending my head
far back, and feeling (and smelling) sweet ash being placed
on my forehead. Afterwards I could sense myself receiving new
robes, and standing by a wall looking out across the mountains,
and I could smell the sweet sharpness of the cold air. It was
a wonderful and very profound experience, and one which - obviously
- I remember as clearly now as I did when it happened nine years
ago, and which perhaps explains my sense of connectedness with
the Buddhist roots of Reiki.
But Reiki students aren't the only ones to have wonderful experiences
during the attunement process. It can happen to the Reiki Master
too! For instance, during every attunement ceremony I am always
aware of the presence of my Reiki guides, and actually see Usui
and Hayashi, and occasionally Takata, when I first begin, and
then again before I close the ceremony, when I thank them for
their help, which is always a beautiful and sacred experience
for me. As each attunement is carried out in a sacred space
- which in effect is out of space and out of time - this makes
it possible to link with other time frames, and occasionally
when I begin attuning a student I become aware that both the
student and myself are dressed differently, either in Japanese
traditional dress, or in Buddhist robes. These images are very
clear, and I can both see and feel the different textures in
the material, and sense different smells, although I cannot
"see" beyond the immediate space around the student
and myself. The attunement process I carry out is also slightly
different, although when I step out of that "space"
to the next student, the memory of what I have just done has
gone - unfortunately!
My only explanation for these happenings is that perhaps I
have been a Reiki Master before (or its Buddhist equivalent,
which always feels much, much further back in time) and I have
attuned that student before in a previous life. Sometimes when
this happens the student will report a feeling of whirling down
a tunnel at the time I placed my hands on their head, but this
isn't always the case, although there does seem a tendency for
those students to be able to channel Reiki particularly well,
i.e. they report a lot of reaction in their hands when using
Reiki for the first time. Also, if this happens during a Second
Degree class they have no trouble at all learning the symbols
- well, I guess they wouldn't, if they'd already learned them
before! I must admit, I had the same experience when I did Reiki
2 - even the Distant Symbol was easy and familiar, as was the
Usui Master symbol when I did Reiki Third Degree.

Matrix: Reloaded
Mystic Movie Review
by Stephen Simons
This is an excerpt from an column in the summer
edition of the hard copy Reiki News Magazine.
This is a film that confounds, astounds, perplexes, and
challenges us as viewers to see beyond the veneers of
the matrix into the belly of the beast, into the core
of our humanity. I believe that films in Spiritual Cinema
ask two eternal questions. Who are we? Why are we here?
MATRIX: RELOADED revolves-no-SWIRLS! -around those eternal
mysteries and provides provocative glimpses into potential
answers and, as such, the MATRIX films (at least, so far)
deserve a place in the pantheon of breakthrough films
such as 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY. . . .
The religious and spiritual metaphors for Neo's character
are a clear link to Christ consciousness, there is indeed
a very interesting and surprising "Judas" in
their midst, and Neo's relationship with Trinity mirrors
Mary's relationship with Jesus. I have always believed
that the "real" story of Jesus and Mary as twin
souls who consciously incarnate to change the course of
human events is one of the great, as-yet untold stories
of our humanity and RELOADED fearlessly dives into that
pool. The love and passion between Neo and Trinity is
one of the "upgrades" of RELOADED. Their relationship
is sensual, deep, and passionate and the film is much
the better for it. In fact, it is Neo's love for Trinity
that propels most of the plot and fuels Neo's visions
of the fateful choice that he has to make near the climax
of the film-save the world of Zion or save the woman he
loves.
Choice and control are also major elements of RELOADED.
Do we indeed have the power of choice or do we live at
the mercy of cause and effect? Whatever choice we make,
do we create our own destinies, or are we pawns in a battle
for which we never volunteered? This is one of the great
conflicts within the film and Neo again is called upon
to understand the paradoxical nature of our free will.
When he meets the Oracle again, she tells him that he
has already made his decisions-that he will fulfill his
purpose-and now he is to understand why. . . .

Come to our Reiki retreat! Last year we had 250 friendly
and enthusiastic Reiki people who represented many of the
various lineages and schools of Reiki from around the country
including some students from other parts of the world. It's
a great experience to be with so many healers and to exchange
hugs, Reiki sessions and healing stories. Many lasting friendships
formed.
This year we are featuring Walter Lübeck, one
of the most prolific Reiki authors and one of the world's
best Reiki teachers. He will be presenting several mini-workshops
including Rainbow Reiki crystal work, advanced aura/chakra
healing, and a special trance drumming session. This last
session will be really exciting as Walter is one of the most
amazing drummers I have every met. Also included is Ulla
Suokko a flautist who will provide several presentations
including playing background music for our Reiki exchange
sessions. She did this last year and we had 20 tables set
up with over 120 people all giving and receiving Reiki together
in one big room! Also William Rand will be presenting
Japanese Reiki Techniques, Meet your Reiki guides, and Reiki
for world peace. Michael Arthur Baird will be presenting
Reiki drumming, and a guided meditation. Laurelle Shanti
Gaia will be presenting a Reiki crystal and soul breathing
mini-workshop and meditative journeys into the Reiki energy
and symbols. We will also have a dance on Saturday night,
and many other wonderful activities. Also, the camp has lots
of hiking trails, a small lake with canoes and row boats,
a big heated swimming pool and lots of other recreational
possibilities.

Dancing, Drumming and Smudging at the retreat
Cost: $350.00 to $450.00 and includes lodging, food and all
workshops and activities. (There may be some private sessions

Honoring All Reiki Schools and Lineages
The Reiki News Magazine

Reiki
News Magazine is the best source of information, inspiration
and news for Reiki healers and teachers. We honor all schools
and lineages and feature articles and stories by the worlds
best known and experienced Reiki masters and practitioners.
Catering to both the beginner and the seasoned practitioner,
we feature the latest information on every aspect of Reiki healing.
Welcome . . .
to the summer issue of the Reiki News Magazine. Our purpose
in publishing the magazine is to provide you with inspiration
as well as new ideas and techniques so your practice of Reiki
can be more fulfilling and beneficial - to you as well as those
you treat. By calling on Reiki to guide this process and by
continually searching for the very best writers and giving them
the freedom and encouragement to produce their best work, we
remain focused on fulfilling that purpose.
The cover story Reiki and Yoga Mudras will interest
many readers. Yoga, a method for self improvement as well as
a path to the Divine, has been practiced for thousands of years.
Yoga mudras are specific hand and finger positions, held for
a period of time, used to create higher states of consciousness
and promote well-being. Adding Reiki to this practice is a natural
progression, and this article gives specific instructions on
how to do this.
Kundalini yoga is another branch of yoga we visit in this issue.
Laurelle Shanti Gaia in her article Reiki and Kundalini
Yoga, provides understanding of this ancient practice. She
also explains how to blend Reiki energy into this ancient practice
so that we can move more quickly toward inner awakening.
Also in this issue, Hiroshi Doi is Interviewed by William
Lee Rand. Hiroshi Doi is a leading authority on the practice
of Reiki in Japan. His membership in the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai
places him in a unique position to access information about
the original Reiki methods of Dr. Mikao Usui as taught by the
organization Dr. Usui founded. His dedication to healing and
to preserving the Usui system of Reiki makes him a valuable
resource to the Reiki community. He has also developed a system
of Reiki Ryoho called Gendai Reiki and is the author of Iyashino
Gendai Reiki-ho, Modern Reiki Method for Healing. In the article,
He resides in Kyoto, Japan.
The popularity and acceptance of Reiki continues to grow -
its use in hospitals is one sign of this. Our new column, Reiki
In Hospitals, written by Jeri Mills, M.D., describes
how Reiki is being integrated into hospitals and clinics. In
this issue, she describes her own experience; in future issues,
she will be writing about others' experiences, as well as providing
useful information to those wanting to bring Reiki into hospitals
or clinics. Also in this issue is an article about the use of
Reiki for HIV/AIDS treatment, which verifies the usefulness
of Reiki for those coping with this challenging illness.
Reiki can be combined with many healing modalities, and its
use with psychotherapy is one of the exciting areas that some
are working with now. The article Reiki Aura Clearing and
Psychotherapy by Karen Harrison gives insight into
how she uses Reiki to increase the effectiveness of her psychotherapy
sessions.
Many in the world today live with great abundance. This can
be a blessing, but it can also lead to unhealthy consumption
and even addiction. The article Reiki and Addiction by
Diane Shewmaker shows an effective method to help clients
free themselves of addictive behaviors.
The spine is the conduit though which important life energies
flow. Keeping it healthy and strong is an important part of
healing as well as preventing illness. The article Treating
the Spine with Reiki by Walter Lübeck provides
us with insight and techniques on how to do this.
Our Movie Mystic column reviews The Matrix:
Reloaded looking at it from a spiritual perspective and
Reiki Stories column rounds out this issue.
I hope you take the time to try some of the techniques offered
in this exciting issue, and that you will use the information
to improve the quality of Reiki you provide yourself and others.
As more and more of us work toward our healing goals, we are
helping make the planet a safer and healthier place to live.
May your divine purpose be fulfilled by the creative healing
power of the Universe.
Love and peace to you and the world,
William Lee Rand

Reiki Stories
Reiki Helps Alcoholic
I am a Reiki practitioner. A customer of mine, also a logia
frater, came to me because he was willing to stop drinking.
He did make the decision to stop but was lacking the will power
to end his dependency. In the first session he recovered his
inner peace but he was still feeling the unpleasant symptoms
of withdrawal. In the second session he did experience mystical
contacts or something close to spirit.
I used all Karuna Reiki® symbols. He did stop drinking.
We scheduled 8 more weekly sessions. The important part was
for him admitting he is an alcoholic instead of hiding the fact;
and, secondly, that he cannot have a drop of any beverage containing
alcohol. Silvia
Reiki Heals Thyroid
I have been a level II Reiki practitioner for about 2 years.
About 4 years ago, I had the right portion of my thyroid removed.
A tiny piece of cancer was found on the thyroid. So I get sonograms
of the remaining left portion regularly. In September 2002 the
sonogram showed a nodule on the left side. It was too small
to warrant surgery, so the endocrinologist suggested I wait
3 months and do another sonogram.
I decided to do Reiki on my throat every night until the follow-up
in December, specifically asking the universal energy to shrink
the nodule. Well, guess what happened? When I went for the follow-up?
NO NODULE!! The doctor was surprised as these nodules only have
a 20% rating of disappearing on their own. I was thrilled. I
now have "medical proof" of my own personal Reiki
story. Thank you for allowing me to share this. Lisa Foster
Reiki and Trauma
In the wonderful way spirit connects all to our universe; spirit
has moved me. I have opened myself to the infinite power that
dwells within me. On April 8th of this year, spirit guided me
to my Reiki I attunement. As the saying goes, this could not
have happened a day to soon. Ten to twelve assailants attacked
my son on April 9th at a train station. He was stabbed once
with an 8" kitchen knife that passed through his pancreas
and into his stomach. He was rushed to a major Boston trauma
center where he underwent four hours of surgery. When he emerged
I was told to expect him to be hospitalized for at least one
month and for him not to be able to eat for at least one week.
Until that point my son thought of my quest to be a Reiki practitioner
as comical and the subject of many a dinnertime chuckle. As
I stood vigil at my son's bedside his first night there, he
briefly woke from his morphine-induced sleep, looked at me deeply
and said, "Dad, will you do your thing to me please?"
He then fell back to sleep. I called my teacher who had attuned
me only a day earlier and asked for guidance.
I was told to ask my Reiki guide to open myself to channel
its energy and to just place my hands anywhere comfortable and
convenient to us both. Most importantly he told me to concentrate
on my love for my son and allow the energy to flow through me
powerfully. He assured me he would also send distance Reiki
to my son daily. I did two treatments a day to him and much
to the surprise of his surgeons my son was released from the
hospital with a clean bill of health after a mere ten days.
I am amazed at the healing power Reiki provides and can't wait
to develop my skill to its utmost and spread Reiki's healing
power and it's love to all who will receive. Blessings to all,
Steve Jacques
Miracle Healings
I am a Reiki master and Rosicrucian master that use my gifts
wisely and quietly. I decided to reveal two recent events as
inspiration for others that will believe they too can perform
miracles.
Last week a co-worker showed me a cyst on her wrist. I put
my hand on it and asked for divine healing. Three days later
I saw her and she said, "I wasn't going to tell you but
my sister made me promise I would let you know what you did.
The cyst is gone."
The following Sunday I was visiting a friend and he told me
one of our friends had a stroke Saturday. His wife found him
lying on the ground outside their house. I visited him at the
hospital where his wife held his hand and was praying for him.
I put my hands on him and prayed and provided Reiki. The light
and heat was so powerful I knew God was with us in the room.
The next night I returned, his daughters were there and said,
"He's brain dead and they want to send him to hospice."
I started to doubt but still gave him Reiki. We went out to
dinner and they were talking about him in the past tense but
his wife and I were saying we had to have faith in God's power.
The next night I visited and his wife said, "We have exciting
news. He has slight brain activity. They are holding off sending
him to hospice." So I gave him Reiki and prayed with his
wife.
That next day I went to the hospital, his daughters saw me,
ran up and hugged me and said, "His brain tests are normal.
He's talking and responding. The doctors have never seen this
happen before. It's a true miracle. Thank you so much. We know
you were a part of it."
The week before the first healing I just described, I had asked
God for a sign so I would know if this should be my life's work.
He has given me the sign. This will be my life's work.
In Light and Love, Richard Payton
Fish Story
I have a beta fish named Oscar at my workstation. Last Friday
I was changing Oscar's water and filled his bowl too close to
the top. When I put the plant that is in a small clear plastic
holder back in the fish bowl, unbeknownst to me, there was no
air space for Oscar.
A few seconds later, Oscar was very visibly in distress. He
was having trouble breathing and flopped over on his side and
looked like he was ready to float to the top. I did about 30
seconds of Reiki on him and he managed to stagger to the top
of his bowl, knocked his head on the plastic and I then realized
I had cut off his air space. Once he showed me the problem,
I gave him air
space and more Reiki and he began swimming beautifully again.
Today, he's in terrific shape, looking for his breakfast early
every morning. Darlene Brady
Reiki Heals Wolf
My husband Jim and I have been doing Reiki healing for some
time now. We find it works on animals just as well. We got a
call from our daughter in Arizona. Her pet wolf was dying and
nothing more could be done. We sent him healing every day and
he was very much aware of it. He is doing great, and healthy
now. Barbara Mohn
Reiki Heals Horse
My horse was bitten by a very venomous insect. Many feel it
was the deadly brown recluse spider. My horse sloughed off all
the hair from his knee to his fetlock. The skin/muscle underneath
looked like a third degree sunburn. The heat emanated out three
feet from his leg into his aura. HOT!!!! I continually applied
Reiki treatments to his leg as well as putting a poultice of
Nopales (prickly pear cactus) on his leg.
One night I was applying Reiki from about two feet out. I was
massaging his aura just as if I were touching his muscle. I
couldn't touch him physically as it was so painful to him. My
eyes were closed and suddenly I felt as if something was pushing
against the palm of my hand. The message I received was that
it was his aura. It felt like jello. It was heavy and squishy.
I looked into my hand and there was nothing there. Then I could
see in my mind as I swirled my fingers, rainbow colors emanated
from the hole in his aura. I feel the Nopales had nothing to
do with the healing.
The Reiki was what helped him to heal. He healed very quickly,
in a total of one and a half months, with no permanent damage.
This is miraculous because that kind of spider leaves large
deep holes in the body and much sloughing of muscle with permanent
damage comes about. Lea Koestel
