Reiki Questions and Answers
by William Lee Rand
Here are the answers to a few frequently asked Reiki questions.
Q. Can pregnant women receive Reiki treatments and take Reiki training?
A. Yes, Reiki can do no harm and adjusts itself to the needs of the receiver. It works especially well for pregnant woman relieving lower back pain, helping the mother relax and sleep better and helping her to more easily adjust to the changes taking place in her body. It is also healthy for the baby and improves the baby’s health and prepares the baby for the birth experience. Breach babies often turn on their own into the normal birth position and complications are greatly reduced. During birthing women who receive Reiki experience a much lower rate of complications and a greatly reduced need for cesarean surgery as attested to by doctors, nurses and doulas who have given Reiki to women during child birth.
Pregnant woman also benefit from taking Reiki training. Some worry that the attunement could cause problems, but it works the same as a treatment in that the attunement can cause no harm either. And the baby benefits too. After the training the woman can Reiki herself and her unborn child and develop an even greater loving bond with the child. Reiki babies are happy babies!
Q. Do you always have to get permission from the person you’re sending to when giving a distant treatment.
A. The concern here is about free will. Even though Reiki is healthy, we need to honor a person’s free will and let them decide if they’d like to receive a treatment or not. Therefore, it is often better to get the conscious permission of the person before sending distant Reiki to them. When you do the person is often more open to the energy and appreciative of it too. However, there are many times and situations where this could be difficult such as when the person is in a coma or is not near a computer or phone or the need is so immediate that it would not make sense to try to get permission. Under these circumstances it is possible to say a prayer and ask for permission directly from the Higher Power – then just follow your inner impression about whether to send or not. It is also possible to simply send Reiki directly to the Higher Power and ask the Higher Power to direct it to the person if it is appropriate or direct it to someone else who is in need and would accept the energy. Also, we often know our friends well enough to know that they like Reiki and would welcome us sending it to them anytime.
In addition to this there is an additional safeguard. Reiki is an intelligent and aware healing energy coming from higher consciousness and is not under our control, but guides itself. It will know if the person wants Reiki or not and will not affect a person who doesn’t want the treatment. This has been demonstrated to me through the use of a clairvoyant councilor I’ve worked with. This clairvoyant could easily see Reiki energy, discern between different kinds of Reiki, read the aura, contact spiritual beings and so forth. In other words she is very clairvoyant and her skill has proven useful and accurate in the many readings I’ve had from her. So we did an experiment in which I sent Reiki to various people. With some she said the person was open to the help Reiki could provide and the energy zoomed right in and began healing. But in others who didn’t want Reiki and weren’t open to receiving its help, it kind of hovered around on the outside of the aura and didn’t affect them. When trying this on your own, you’ll often feel if the person wants the energy because it feels good to send it but if it isn’t wanted, you may feel a kind of repulsion or other feeling that will let you know they don’t want it.
Q. How do we know the symbols work?
A. This is based on experience. In the classes taught by myself and our teachers at the Center, we always spend time in class using the symbols and comparing how the energy feels and acts compared with Reiki I energy which is done without symbols. In this way students experience the strength of their Reiki getting stronger and hotter with the power symbol and generally more mellow and peaceful with the mental/emotional symbol. The distant symbol can also be tested by sending to people and then finding out what they experienced. This is even more impressive if the person doesn’t know the time you’ll be sending and then is able to tell you what time they felt the energy.
I’ve also done experiments with my clairvoyant friend mentioned above. During a phone reading I asked her first to diagnose my energy field and tell me what it was doing and what it looked like which she did. Then without telling her, I began doing Reiki on myself and asked her what she saw. She said she saw a new stream of energy coming down through the crown and then into the aura which expanded and there was a beautiful flow of relaxing energy and she told me I was giving myself Reiki. Then I used the power symbol without saying anything and she said she could see a change happen and that the energy suddenly got a lot stronger. Then I used the mental/emotional symbol and she said the energy came down through the crown chakra, the some came out the solar plexus and some out the heart chakra and it was going into the aura and healing the mental and emotional bodies. Then I drew the distant symbol and began sending Reiki to a friend. At this point she said something different happened and that the aura got a lot bluer and expanded even more. She said she saw a beam of light coming from each hand and they went out to a point about 40 miles away where they crossed, and at this point there was a person and she said that I was sending Reiki to the person – which they really appreciated.

Keeping Reiki Free in Ohio
Hello,
It was great to see the article on Health Freedom in the Reiki News Magazine this Spring. Thank you for promoting such an important issue. As you know, Health Freedom bills keep Reiki practitioners free to practice as well as many other holistic practitioners.
I am Daryl Kulak, the President of the Health Freedom Coalition of Ohio (www.ohiohealthfreedom.org). We were not listed in your article, but we are very active indeed. I suspect you took your list from the National Coalition Website, they don't have our information up there yet. We have been in close contact with Diane Miller in the past year.
We have Health Freedom bills introduced in the Ohio House and Senate and they are moving very quickly. The press conference to introduce the bill into the House in March 2005 attracted more than 100 holistic practitioners and clients into the room at the Statehouse! Wow! And committee hearings are happening next week!
I have a favor to ask. Is there any way that you can appeal to Ohio Reiki News subscribers via e-mail to ask them to participate in our Committee hearings next week?
Here is what we need.
1. We need clients of reiki (or other practices) who have experienced healing to be able to testify in front of the Commerce & Labor Committee. We need their written testimony in the next few days in order to present it beforehand to the Committee. We have almost enough people to testify, but we could still use a few more - the more dramatic the stories of healing the better. The clients need to be residents of Ohio , of course.
2. We need to "pack the gallery" again like we did at the press conference. We want to have 200 people overflowing into the hallway to greet the Committee. Could you appeal to your subscribers to please come?? If doesn't matter if the gallery participants are from Ohio or elsewhere, as long as we have lots and lots of people.
Here are the details:
Ohio Consumer Health Freedom Testimony
April 5, 2005
1:30pm - 4:30pm (or later)
Ohio Statehouse (corner of Broad St and High St downtown)
Columbus, Ohio
park underground
go to the Rotunda of the Statehouse, ask the person with the Orange Health Freedom Badge for directions to the Hearing Room
People can stay as long as their schedule permits. The important thing is to have 200 people there at the start of the Committee hearing.
Is there any way you can help us publicize this event? If so, I will be forever grateful. Needless to say, time is of the essence!
Thank you, thank you.

Teaching Reiki To Physicians
Introducing Ancient Techniques to Modern Medicine
by Brian D. Dailey, M.D., FACEP, FACFE
On December 3, 2003, I had the great pleasure of doing a hands-on workshop on Reiki at the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry. This was the second year we were invited for Hands-on CAM (Complementary & Alternative Medicine) sponsored by WISH (Wellness through the Integration of Science & Healing). Times have changed for the better! As a medical student at the University of Rochester in 1977, there were no CAM courses I could take, nor was my interest in CAM encouraged. Today there are CAM courses and electives available, and faculty to teach them. I have had medical students take electives with me, getting their Reiki certification and attending our Reiki circles. The Hands-on CAM is designed to acquaint medical students and faculty with a variety of complementary therapies, which they experience in hands-on sessions. It allows abstract concepts to be experienced and become real—a knowing rather than a belief.
In the Power Point presentation preceding the hands-on portion, we reviewed the concept of “energy medicine” (1-6). The energy body is the scaffolding that the physical body is built on, or modeled after. Einstein used E=mc 2 (energy=mass x velocity of light squared) to explain how energy and physical matter could be converted back and forth, that energy was neither created nor destroyed (even persisting after death). Disease is the result of imbalance, or asymmetry in the body’s energy field. The chakra energy system consists of seven major energy centers in the body’s midline, from the pubic bone to the top of the head, as well as thousands of smaller centers. The chakras allow energy exchange between the outside environment and the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual body. Reiki is a powerful way to allow this energy exchange to occur and allow healing on these many levels. Reiki has been shown to induce a relaxation response in as little as five minutes, significantly reduce pain (7), and accelerate healing (5, 6). It is useful for treating many psychosomatic illnesses and autonomic dysfunction (e.g. fibromyalgia, phantom limb pain) often difficult to treat by conventional means. Twenty years ago few in the medical establishment were familiar with these concepts, but that night many of the participants raised their hands when questioned if any were familiar with these ideas. Modern medicine is now acknowledging that healing takes place on more than just the physical level, a major shift in thinking.
As a third degree Reiki Master, I have had the opportunity to teach Reiki and do workshops with both medical personnel (physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, etc.) as well as lay people. One of the great beauties of Reiki is its simplicity—it is not necessary to feel and assess energy fields, but to simply “let things flow and the process to happen on its own.” The body has an innate wisdom to be well, and will often heal itself when given the opportunity. That said, I have found it extremely valuable to work with some of the “left-brained skeptics” in the medical profession to help them get the sense of energy and energy flow. I use “left-brained skeptic” affectionately. These individuals are focused in the left-brain logical mind and less in touch with the intuitive “touchy-feely” right brain. In medicine, we have to “prove something works.” With little effort, most participants are able to get the sense of energy fields and are able to sense specific chakras. The reason this may be important in working with the medical profession is that these concepts are no longer abstract ideas, and therefore become believable to them. Progress usually accelerates rapidly after this basic acceptance of energy. We used several techniques to do this, and readers may try them as well.
Zip/Unzip
A person stands erect with their dominant arm (if right handed, elevate the right arm) elevated at a right angle to shoulder height, the thumb pointing up to the ceiling. The partner faces the other person. If the right arm is raised, the facing partner uses the index and middle fingers of their left hand and rests them lightly on the other’s right wrist. Ask the person to “lock and resist” their elevated arm. Push down and note the initial resistance (usually one of strength). Now “unzip the partner”—touch lightly and run your fingers down the partner’s front, beginning just under the chin, down the midline to the groin. Retest their outstretched arm, reminding them to lock and resist. Note again the initial resistance as you press down with two fingers. Most people will appreciate a subtle decrease in muscle strength. In people with serious illness, the difference may be remarkable. Now reverse the process, and zip up from the groin to the chin. Usually the muscle strength will again increase on retesting muscle strength (in serious illness they may require two or more zips to regain their strength). Part of the effect is mediated by the central conception acupuncture meridian. It helps “left-brained skeptics” understand that physical changes can be quickly induced energetically with techniques like Reiki. Always finish with a zip up to increase strength. Never leave someone unzipped, in a lower energy (weakened) condition. In our Reiki circle, if we see someone “unzipped,” we will jokingly tell them “their fly is open” and ask them to zip up. You can zip up yourself for an energy boost. Simply run your fingers from the pubic bone, up your front, to your chin. Invoking the Reiki power symbol will add even more energy.
Sensing Chakras
It is unnecessary to sense chakras to do Reiki therapy. However, the “left-brained skeptic” will often tell me that chakras don’t exist—“I can’t see them.” I explain that although they may not able to see them, there are people who can. And most people can learn to “sense” chakras. I ask them if they believe in gravity. “Yes.” Have they ever seen, touched, tasted, felt gravity? “No.” But they accept gravity. “Open your mind to possibilities; you don’t have to believe in it,” I reassure them. Most everyone is kinesthetic, if we are open to it. Using our hands, energy may be perceived as warmth, tingling, hot, cold, pressure, heaviness, emptiness, hollowness, unevenness, bumpy, sandpapery, etc. The reason safecrackers rub their hands together before tickling the tumblers to open a safe is they are very spiritual! By rubbing their hands together, they are stimulating their hand chakras, making their fingertips more sensitive to feel the tumblers moving. OK, maybe safecrackers aren’t spiritual, but they know this makes their hands more sensitive. For health-care providers, rubbing your hands together will make them more sensitive for patient palpation or to sense chakras and energy. One can also stimulate the hands with crystals or essential oils, or by simply shaking the hands vigorously. Now that hand sensitivity is increased, let the sensing begin! Place the patient comfortably on their back, a small cushion behind the knees (to relieve lumbar stress of the lower back). The seven major chakras are in the midline of the body, from the pubic bone to the top of the head. For those not familiar with chakras, the information can be found in many books(2,4,6,8), as well as Web sites (type “chakra healing” in Google or another search engine). I like to place a crystal on each chakra, which amplifies the energy and makes it easier for the individual to sense each chakra (9,10,11). Place a light blanket on the patient, to keep them warm as their blood vessels vasodilate from the relaxation response to Reiki (making them feel cool). Have them hold their hand a few inches above the midline of the patient, and slowly move their hand in the midline, attempting to sense something “different.” People may sense the same energy differently. Honor them. They may feel warmth, cold, tingling, pressure, etc. If you ask them to “feel the warmth” you do, they will be disappointed as they note a “tingling” in their hand, which is how they perceive the chakra, and disavow the information they are getting (“I don’t feel warmth, only tingling.”). Interestingly, the great majority of participants are able to get a sense of “energy,” whether it is pressure, warmth, etc. You can see “the lightbulb click on” as they sense it. “Chakras are real!” “I can feel them!”
Healing requires great compassion, caring, and love. Those in the healing arts and many in the medical profession (particularly the nursing profession) have large fourth heart chakras, located at the level of the breast bone. In people attending healing workshops, this becomes one of the easier chakras to sense, since it is so large in these people. Start with their hand at the third solar plexus chakra (at the top of the abdomen). Have them slowly move their hand a few inches (ten to fifteen centimeters, for the metric crowd) above the midline to the level of the throat, the fifth chakra. Ask them to feel for something “different,” let them know it will be subtle (Reiki is one of the “subtle energies,” remember?). As their hand passes over the fourth chakra, you may see it slow, suggesting they are sensing “something different.” Ask them to describe what they are feeling. “It feels like.…” Explain that it is the fourth chakra. Now they may pick up on the (possibly) more subtle third and fifth chakras. If they don’t sense anything, reassure them that it is OK, that with time, they will. Many times it is because they have quick, active minds and haven’t learned to quiet the mind and listen for life’s subtleties. In this case, I will place my hand an inch above theirs, and “follow along.” As we get over the fourth chakra, I will pause for ten to thirty seconds, asking them to “just feel” there. Most often, they will begin to “sense something different,” and then be able to localize the other chakras as well. Now that we have a sense of energy and chakras, let’s start.…

Reiki Stories
Reiki and Uterine Cancer
Six years ago while a Level Two Reiki healer I was witness to an extraordinary healing of a woman diagnosed with cancer. My Reiki Master (Colleen Chauntler of Gladstone, Australia) was staying with me at the time. A woman was brought to my home presenting a distended lower abdomen and we were told by her friends that she had been sick for some months. In the week prior to this visit she had a scan and had been told by doctors that she had a large tumour in her uterus that was probably cancerous. Surgery was planned for the following week. We decided to give her three sessions of Reiki healing throughout the week, hoping that would encourage rapid healing for her after her surgery. Rather than the usual hand positions, three of us worked on her-my Reiki Master held her hands on the patient's lower abdomen, I had my hands on her head (crown) and another Level Two healer (Sharon Honatana) was at her feet. We stayed like that for approximately an hour each session.
On the day she was to check in to the hospital I saw a large black energy in the shape of a ball and surrounded by what appeared to be sparking energy lift from her abdomen and rise up into the air. It kept rising and disappeared through the ceiling of the room. I asked if anyone else had seen it and each of the others confirmed the same thing, including the patient. She duly went on to check in to the hospital, and when they examined her they could not feel the tumour; they sent her for a scan and it had gone. She told us with great humour that the doctors were arguing and quite flustered at the result. They eventually went on to do an exploratory operation but no tumour could be found. She had therapy for the few cancer cells they did find and is fit and healthy now.
The woman believes she was healed by Satya Sai Baba and Reiki. On the night before her last session she said she dreamed she was in her car and it was teetering on the edge of a cliff. Below her was blackness; in her rear-vision mirror she could see a long road, and walking along this road was Sai Baba. He came toward her car and stood looking at her. She cried out to him to help her and he reached down and pulled her car off the edge of the cliff and placed it back on the road. Penelope (Penny) Hayward
Reiki and Prostate Cancer
With the thought of promoting Reiki, I called an assisted-living center to offer an Introduction to Reiki class with free mini-Reiki sessions. When I asked the social director if he was familiar with Reiki he said, "Let me tell you my story," and proceeded to tell me that he had been recently diagnosed with prostate cancer. His massage therapist, Reiki Level II, had been told by a psychic that he (the social director) needed to receive three treatments in close succession by three Reiki healers. I quickly set things in motion and our team performed Reiki on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday. No other treatment was given. Prior to treatment his test confirmed he was 4.0 and his doctor diagnosed that he had prostate cancer. The Monday after we completed the three treatments he was again tested. On the following Wednesday he called to say the test results showed 0.3 and that he was free of cancer. He remarked that in all of his life the test results were never that low. I am so honored to have been a part of his healing. I feel honored to be called by Reiki, a major part of my life. Phran Gacher, Stamford, Connecticut
Reiki and Heart Attacks
Without a sound, a man collapsed, sliding silently from his chair and onto the floor. People crowded around him, and one person, a Reiki Level One, began hands-on while I went into another room. I could clearly feel his heart beat. It was very faint and squishy (a technical term?).
As energy began to flow, a slightly different connection was made and I found that my heart was beating for his. That was new to me, but it added a lot of depth to Usui-Sensei's statement to "Always expect there to be oneness." The man was sitting up by the time the paramedics arrived.
Less than a week later, a friend phoned. She had just called 911; her husband was having a heart attack. His heartbeat was entirely different: fluttery and erratic, a bit like static on the radio. Again the link was made allowing my heart to beat for his. He too was sitting up when the paramedics arrived.
Similar scenes have happened over the years-similar, yet each one entirely different. Panic attacks respond in a similar manner, except that the victims' breathing and heart rate move into synch with mine. There seems to be a definite increase in panic attacks nowadays. W. Craig
Reiki and Two-Story Fall
On July 10 of this year I fell two stories onto concrete while practicing a rope rescue technique. Luckily my friends surrounded me. A friend I took Reiki I and II with immediately placed her hands on me, before I even thought about what was happening. I was able to be transported by private vehicle to the hospital, and experienced minimal pain. The emergency room physician was very surprised to see my X-rays. My left ankle was fractured and dislocated and I had suffered a T-12 compression fracture. Despite this, my ankle was not swollen and was mobile with a good pulse. I required no narcotic analgesics until transfer to a trauma facility one hour away.
Reiki, along with aromatherapy, massage, and yoga, continues to be an important part of my recovery. Thanks to Heather, my teachers, and the great Reiki masters for the great healing. Amy Fierro
Reiki Heals Bird
This is an incident which occurred when I did Reiki Level I way back in 1997. My son, who was then four years old, and I went to our garage to take our bicycles for a ride. To our surprise we found a bird lying down, unable to flap its wings and making a feeble attempt to fly. I said to my son, "Lets give Reiki," and I went ahead and without touching the bird gave Reiki. Lo and behold, after some time it flapped its wings energetically and flew off!
Both of us were pleasantly surprised and happy, too. My son now knows what Reiki can do, and often when he is tired or has any pains due to play or whatever, or before going to sleep, asks me to give him Reiki. This has left an impression which he will remember throughout. I have so many live examples to share but this should convince other first-timers to seek and experience Reiki to have full conviction on the effectiveness of Reiki in day-to-day life.
