Reiki and Yoga Mudras
by Cathy Dyer
This is an excerpt from an article in the summer
edition of the hard copy Reiki News Magazine.
Mudras
Mudras are hand, eye, and/or body positions used for intensifying
meditation in Eastern traditions. A mudra is also a seal or
symbol. Mudras both depict and lead to various states of consciousness.
They can affect mental clarity, affect emotions, and when used
over time, can improve physical health. Reiki practitioners
may already be familiar with Gassho mudra used in Dr. Usui's
preparation for treatment.
Mudras are found in cultures all over the world. They are used
in religious practices and dance in India, in the gestures of
the Catholic Mass, and in martial arts. In addition, they are
part of everyday rituals such as blowing a kiss and the handshake
that seals an agreement. The origin of mudras is not known,
but they do have a long tradition in Tibetan Buddhism and Tantric
philosophy. Some believe that they may have originated in Egypt.
Using Mudras with Reiki
To use Reiki with mudras, form the selected mudra and breathe
three to ten times to settle in. The pressure of the fingers
is light and the hands are relaxed. Then activate Reiki by simply
thinking of Reiki or intending it to flow. Hold each mudra for
four to ten minutes, or as long as needed according to your
inner guidance.
Hakini Mudra
This mudra is said to benefit the brain, third eye and lungs
including balancing the right and left sides of the brain and
creating cooperation between them.

Genetic Health Awareness
Genes are Natures blueprint for "building"
life. Genes are present in the central compartment (the
nucleus) of almost every one of the 100 trillion cells
in your body. In all, your body contains about 30,000-40,000
genes.
More than 99% of the human DNA sequence is the same in
all humans. Yet the relatively small amount of DNA that
differs from person to person is very important. A gene
sequence that varies from the usual pattern (a polymorphism)
can alter the normal shape and function of proteins. This
can change the way the body functions. It can also make
us more susceptible to some diseases and more resistant
to others.
In almost all cases, a genes ability to promote
disease depends heavily on its being switched "on"
or "off" by other factors in the environment.
These factors can be things like cigarette smoke or air
pollution, excessive alcohol consumption, poor diet, sun
exposure, bacterial infection, chronic nutrient deficiencies,
hormone imbalances, lifestyle habits, or toxic exposure.
In other words, the vast majority of genetic polymorphisms
only have the potential to cause health problems, if exposed
to the wrong "mix" of harmful agents over time.
The human genome project which mapped out the 3 billion
letters in our DNA code was completed June, 2000. Since
then, uses for this information have been focused on and
it is now possible to have your DNA analyzed for genetic
predisposition toward various illnesses and conditions.
This knowledge may not always be considered useful to
everyone - especially if one were to become aware of a
genetic predisposition toward a condition or illness that
we have no current medical cure for or for which there
is nothing one can do medically to prevent or control
it. However, many consider it a real advantage if one
is made aware of conditions that one might develop based
on one's unique genetic predisposition for which cures
or preventive strategies do exist.
As an example, if one finds that one has a genetic predisposition
toward heart disease, even if one does not have any current
heart problems, then one would be more strongly motivated
to take preventive measures such as improvements in ones
diet and exercise to reduce the likelihood of having heart
problems. Of course, daily Reiki treatments to ones heart
would also be valuable. The same is true for any number
of potential conditions that are treatable.
A company is now offering this service. Genovations
is a DNA survey which tests a patients DNA only in areas
for which known preventive measures do exist. The four
areas they test are - Cardio, Osteo, Immuno and Detoxi.
These are all areas that can be positively influenced
by changes in diet, exercise and other factors such as
Reiki treatments. Because of this, strategies can be developed
to limit or prevent the conditions in advance! For more
information, click on the above link.

Share Your Meaningful
Reiki Experience
Many Reiki practitioners have had meaningful subjective
experiences when giving or receiving Reiki, or when
receiving a Reiki attunement. Feelings of warmth, or
pulsing or waves of energy have been reported, while
others say they have actually seen Reiki energy. Others
have reported seeing angels, spiritual beings, past
lives or had other visions. Occasionally some have entered
altered states of consciousness that have had a profoundly
meaningful affect on their lives.
If you have had a meaningful inner experience with
Reiki, we'd like to know about it. Please take some
time to describe your experience in writing and send
it to us using the form
below.
Here are a few examples we have received:
Overwhelming Joy
While giving Reiki to another student during a Karuna
Reiki® class, I experienced a wonderful inner light
that seemed to shine from my heart and fill the room
and especially seemed to be shining upward. It lifted
me up and I was filled with a very strong and tangible
feeling of joy that was so real and was very strongly
connected to my life. It clearly said to me that this
experience could be present in my everyday life if I
were to accept it and that it would be very healthy
and meaningful. I do feel more joy now, in fact most
of the time and it seems to increase and decrease throughout
the day. Randy Chapman
Waves of Light
When giving Reiki treatments, I often experience the
Reiki energy flowing through me as waves of light. The
waves seem to start in the root chakra, but also in
the heart and flow out my arms and hands in wave after
wave. I can sometimes see the energy too and when I
look very closely, it appears to be made of very small
particles of light. At the same time, I also experience
an uplifting feeling and become very optimistic and
positive. Cheryl Berk
Vision of Angel
During the attunement for Reiki II, I became very calm
and filled with peace. Then a light began to pouring
into the top of my head and I became aware of a being
of light that appeared to be an angel. I felt tremendous
love coming from the angel and I knew that a situation
in my life I had been struggling with would turn out
all right -- and it did. Sharon Oldfield

Reiki Retreat
Rock Hill, NY - Labor Day Weekend
August 29-September 1, 2003
Come to our Reiki retreat! Last year we had 250 friendly
and enthusiastic Reiki people who represented many of the
various lineages and schools of Reiki from around the country
including some students from other parts of the world. It's
a great experience to be with so many healers and to exchange
hugs, Reiki sessions and healing stories. Many lasting friendships
formed.
This year we are featuring Walter Lübeck, one
of the most prolific Reiki authors and one of the world's
best Reiki teachers. He will be presenting several mini-workshops
including Rainbow Reiki crystal work, advanced aura/chakra
healing, and a special trance drumming session. This last
session will be really exciting as Walter is one of the most
amazing drummers I have every met. Also included is Ulla
Suokko a flautist who will provide several presentations
including playing background music for our Reiki exchange
sessions. She did this last year and we had 20 tables set
up with over 120 people all giving and receiving Reiki together
in one big room! Also William Rand will be presenting
Japanese Reiki Techniques, Meet your Reiki guides, and Reiki
for world peace. Michael Arthur Baird will be presenting
Reiki drumming, and a guided meditation. Laurelle Shanti
Gaia will be presenting a Reiki crystal and soul breathing
mini-workshop and meditative journeys into the Reiki energy
and symbols. We will also have a dance on Saturday night,
and many other wonderful activities. Also, the camp has lots
of hiking trails, a small lake with canoes and row boats,
a big heated swimming pool and lots of other recreational
possibilities.

Dancing, Drumming and Smudging at the retreat
Cost: $350.00 to $450.00 and includes lodging, food and all
workshops and activities. (There may be some private sessions
with Walter or others that require an additional fee.)
William
Rand will also be teaching an ART/Master
class Aug 25-27 before the retreat.
Laurelle
Shanti Gaia will also be teaching a Karuna
Reiki® class Aug 25-27 before the retreat.

Reiki
News Magazine is the best source of information, inspiration
and news for Reiki healers and teachers. We honor all schools
and lineages and feature articles and stories by the worlds
best known and experienced Reiki masters and practitioners.
Catering to both the beginner and the seasoned practitioner,
we feature the latest information on every aspect of Reiki healing.
Welcome . . .
to the summer issue of the Reiki News Magazine. Our purpose
in publishing the magazine is to provide you with inspiration
as well as new ideas and techniques so your practice of Reiki
can be more fulfilling and beneficial - to you as well as those
you treat. By calling on Reiki to guide this process and by
continually searching for the very best writers and giving them
the freedom and encouragement to produce their best work, we
remain focused on fulfilling that purpose.
The cover story Reiki and Yoga Mudras will interest
many readers. Yoga, a method for self improvement as well as
a path to the Divine, has been practiced for thousands of years.
Yoga mudras are specific hand and finger positions, held for
a period of time, used to create higher states of consciousness
and promote well-being. Adding Reiki to this practice is a natural
progression, and this article gives specific instructions on
how to do this.
Kundalini yoga is another branch of yoga we visit in this issue.
Laurelle Shanti Gaia in her article Reiki and Kundalini
Yoga, provides understanding of this ancient practice. She
also explains how to blend Reiki energy into this ancient practice
so that we can move more quickly toward inner awakening.
Also in this issue, Hiroshi Doi is Interviewed by William
Lee Rand. Hiroshi Doi is a leading authority on the practice
of Reiki in Japan. His membership in the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai
places him in a unique position to access information about
the original Reiki methods of Dr. Mikao Usui as taught by the
organization Dr. Usui founded. His dedication to healing and
to preserving the Usui system of Reiki makes him a valuable
resource to the Reiki community. He has also developed a system
of Reiki Ryoho called Gendai Reiki and is the author of Iyashino
Gendai Reiki-ho, Modern Reiki Method for Healing. In the article,
He resides in Kyoto, Japan.
The popularity and acceptance of Reiki continues to grow -
its use in hospitals is one sign of this. Our new column, Reiki
In Hospitals, written by Jeri Mills, M.D., describes
how Reiki is being integrated into hospitals and clinics. In
this issue, she describes her own experience; in future issues,
she will be writing about others' experiences, as well as providing
useful information to those wanting to bring Reiki into hospitals
or clinics. Also in this issue is an article about the use of
Reiki for HIV/AIDS treatment, which verifies the usefulness
of Reiki for those coping with this challenging illness.
Reiki can be combined with many healing modalities, and its
use with psychotherapy is one of the exciting areas that some
are working with now. The article Reiki Aura Clearing and
Psychotherapy by Karen Harrison gives insight into
how she uses Reiki to increase the effectiveness of her psychotherapy
sessions.
Many in the world today live with great abundance. This can
be a blessing, but it can also lead to unhealthy consumption
and even addiction. The article Reiki and Addiction by
Diane Shewmaker shows an effective method to help clients
free themselves of addictive behaviors.
The spine is the conduit though which important life energies
flow. Keeping it healthy and strong is an important part of
healing as well as preventing illness. The article Treating
the Spine with Reiki by Walter Lübeck provides
us with insight and techniques on how to do this.
Our Movie Mystic column reviews The Matrix:
Reloaded looking at it from a spiritual perspective and
Reiki Stories column rounds out this issue.
I hope you take the time to try some of the techniques offered
in this exciting issue, and that you will use the information
to improve the quality of Reiki you provide yourself and others.
As more and more of us work toward our healing goals, we are
helping make the planet a safer and healthier place to live.
May your divine purpose be fulfilled by the creative healing
power of the Universe.
Love and peace to you and the world,
William Lee Rand

Reiki Stories
Reiki Restores Circulation in Diabetic
Recently a 69 year-old male with insulin-dependent diabetes
was referred to me for treatment. I learned after some discussion
that he had very poor circulation in his feet. In fact he had
a
toe removed due to an infection that would not heal. He also
had an open sore on his left heel that had refused to heal over
the previous four months. I gave him a Reiki treatment and as
I
finished the front of his body and went to his feet I noticed
they were extremely cold.
He turned over with assistance and I completed the Reiki treatment
on his back. Moving to the feet I drew the power symbol and
a couple of Karuna Reiki® symbols on his feet. When I finished
I noticed his feet were extremely warm. When he got off the
table and his bare feet hit the carpet he exclaimed, "I
haven't had any feeling in my feet for a long time, thank you!"
After 3 more treatments he was excited to report the hole in
his left heel had completely healed.

Reiki Heals Tumor
Last year a friend of mine was told she had a small tumor in
her throat. I asked if she was game for a Reiki session and
she eagerly agreed.
I sent her distance Reiki for twenty minutes while she was
resting. During this time a blue light appeared before me that
traveled to the right side of her neck and went inwards. After
the session my friend mentioned she felt warm energy and very
relaxed. She asked if I had seen anything and I told her. The
site where the blue light landed was the location of the tumor.
Three weeks later she discovered when visiting her doctor that
the tumor was gone. At the time I had my level two Usui Reiki.

Reiki Helps Liver Transplant
I gave Reiki to a man who had a second liver transplant and
it was failing. He stopped all his medications and I started
to give him Reiki. He wound up in hospice. While in hospice
he started to feel better. His wife asked for his blood to be
checked. The blood work came back and he had a perfectly normal
liver. Needless to say I thanked God for his recovery. The doctor
told his wife he had no medical explanation for his recovery.
Patricia
Reiki Helps Insomina
I have done Reiki Level one and two and Level three A and three
B. My mother's 65 year-old friend had stones in her gall bladder.
She was operated on in Bangalore, India. The gall bladder was
removed because it was not possible to remove the stones. She
did not try Reiki for removal of stones. After the operation
she suffered with severe pain and was not able to sleep for
almost 45 days. Then she happened to come to Ahmedabad where
I lived.
My mother suggested she get Reiki from me. I went to see her
and saw her despair and was suffering so much. My wife, Nayana
(Reiki Two) and I gave her a treatment. We made four symbols
and swept Reiki near the place of operation and used the power
symbol for about 3-4 minutes. Then we used distant Reiki as
we were seated a little further away. She started sleeping and
was fully relieved of pain. She snored to everybody's surprise
after so many days. The next morning she called and told me
she slept and had almost no pain! She was surprised and very
happy. She stayed in town for about two months and kept calling
to thank us every week and to report she had no pain whatsoever.
We thanked Reiki and the supreme energy for such a great help.

Reiki Helps Pneumonia and Acute Pancreatitis
On Easter Sunday 2003 my daughter was hospitalized at Alvarado
Hospital in the surgical intensive care unit with acute pancreatitis
leading to pneumonia followed by a second
pneumonia from aspiration. She was on morphine for pain, a respirator,
TPN, N/G tube (to keep the stomach empty to prevent further
vomiting), and much more. Her doctors had prepared us
for the worst saying her condition was serious and could be
fatal. If she recovered she was expected to be in the hospital
for at least another week to ten days followed by weeks of
recovery at home.
I asked Tiffany Snow to do a Reiki treatment (an alternative
therapy recognized by the AMA) on my daughter but was told;
by hospital staff, I needed to get a doctor's order. The doctor
had heard of Reiki and graciously agreed. On the third day in
ICU, Tiffany did the Reiki treatment. The nurses showed respect
and worked around her schedule to avoid any interruption. Tiffany
asked me to stay and pray. In the middle of the treatment that
took less than an hour, my daughter felt hot and asked for a
fan. The treatment was paused as my daughter ate two bowls of
broth and some Jello that she was able to keep down (her first
day on liquids). After another 10 minutes of treatment Tiffany
said a final silent prayer, smiled and gave us both words of
encouragement and said to watch for big changes to occur and
left.
That evening, my daughter was tolerating liquids so well they
took her N/G tube out (2 days earlier then expected). The following
day she was transferred out of ICU and discharged home
on Sunday after being in the hospital only 8 days (4 days after
the treatment). The doctors were astounded with her speedy recovery
and attributed it to her youth. I was told that other patients
with the same problem are hospitalized much longer as pancreatitis
takes a long time to heal.
I felt it was a miracle my daughter, not only survived, but
recovered so quickly. Three days after hospital discharge she
went back to school part-time. I am extremely grateful for the
powerful healing given to my daughter, the many prayers from
family and friends, and the excellent care she received at the
hospital. It was a perfect example of Alternative and Western
medicine coming together. I have no doubt the healing that came
through Tiffany (and as she says from The Big Guy, from God)
was powerful and made a difference. Tiffany Snow
