Reiki and Developing Higher Consciousness
by William Lee Rand
The practice of Reiki can be divided into two styles – the Japanese style and the Western style. The Western style, created by Mrs. Takata has its primary focus on following a set pattern of hand placements which is the same for each client. This treatment method covers the whole body and because of this, those areas most in need of Reiki always get treated. In addition, the Western style builds up a reservoir of Reiki energy in the aura of the client that stays with him or her and continues to promote healing after the session has ended.
The Japanese style places greater focus on developing awareness of the human energy field and the development and use of one’s intuition to determine how to treat each person. Because of this, a Japanese style Reiki session can be different each time a client is treated and will be based more directly on the needs of the client at the time of treatment.
While the Western style does make use of intuition to a certain extent, it is minimal and doesn’t teach the specific intuitive skills and techniques required in the Japanese style; nor does the Western style teach awareness of the human energy field. Because of the additional skills taught in the Japanese style it’s easier for a practitioner to continue to develop greater skill as a healer as ones sensitivity and intuition develop. In addition, the continued development of these skills can lead one into a deeper understanding of subtle energies and more easily allow the practice of Reiki to expand into a method of spiritual development.
One Japanese Reiki technique that develops awareness of the human energy field is byosen scanning. Byosen scanning is a technique to determine where the client is out of balance and in fact the word byosen means “location of disease”. Therefore, byosen scanning is a technique for discovering those areas in need of Reiki. Byosen makes use of the sensitivity in the hands and is a skill anyone can learn. The Reiki attunement stimulates this ability by opening the palm chakras and making them more sensitive to the human energy field. It is taught in Reiki I or II and is also explained in Reiki, The Healing Touch. A video training session in byosen scanning is also provided on DVD in The Reiki Touch Kit.
As practitioners practice byosen scanning one’s ability will improve allowing a more detailed awareness of areas of distress. This more detailed information can be used to inform one’s ability to administer Reiki making it more effective. In addition after a while, practitioners often begin to sense the energy field and the areas of distress with the inner eye which provides visual impressions in addition to what is the awareness coming from the hands. Eventually some practitioners learn to scan with the eyes alone and are able to detect areas in need of treatment as soon as the client enters the treatment room or while the client is lying on the treatment table.
The subtle fields of consciousness that surround and penetrate the human body not only determine the quality of our health, but are also a more direct reflection of who we are. By giving us direct experience of the human energy field, byosen scanning allows us to be aware of others in a remarkable new way and enhances our understanding of what it means to be alive! As we become more aware of these energies, we become more consciously connected to the foundation on which our life is based.
Another Japanese Reiki technique that develops intuition is Reiji-ho. This is a method of knowing where a person needs Reiki directly through intuition. This technique involves the use of prayer and a request to be shown inwardly the areas in need of Reiki. When using this technique, one simply knows where to place ones hands. This may be directly on the body or locations away from the body and within the energy field.
Often the client will remark that the area chosen is an area where they have distress or a medical condition. At other times, the client may not know of a condition or have distress in the area chosen. If this is the case and the area is in the energy field, it usually indicates that they have a condition that hasn’t yet developed in the physical body. By treating conditions of this type, one is practicing preventive Reiki in which a condition is healed before it affects the body and causes serious problems.
In addition, keep in mind that often the best place to treat isn’t over the area in need, but in an area that is connected energetically to the area in need so the client may not report distress or a medical condition where you are guided to place your hands. This may seem illogical, but it’s important to trust your intuition and treat where you are guided. In this situation, Reiki will enter the body and/or the energy field in one location, and travel to the area(s) in need. In any case, the client’s system will be balanced, healing will take place and benefits of relaxation and stress reduction will be provided by the use of Reiki.
Reiji-Ho
These directions are for practicing the Japanese Reiki technique mentioned above that allows you to intuitively know where to place your hands during a Reiki session.
1. While standing next to the client, place your hands in the gassho position with both hands together similar to the prayer position in front of the heart.
2. While in gassho, say a prayer on behalf of the client asking that they be deeply healed.
3. Then move the prayer clasped hands up to the third eye which is between the eye brows with the thumbs touching the third eye.
4. With hands at the third eye position, ask that you be shown where the client needs Reiki. If the client has a specific condition, ask specifically where to place your hands to treat this condition, otherwise, simple ask where to place your hands. Still your mind, focus on the client and be aware of the area you are directed to.
5. Give thinks for the guidance you’ve received.
6. Use the information you’ve received to treat the client.
The use of Japanese Reiki techniques of this type develop new levels of awareness within the practitioner and open one more completely to a higher sense of knowing and to the amazing process through which our life and all of existence is manifest. As we develop these skills, in addition to becoming better healers, we’re able to live our lives with greater confidence knowing that we can more effectively deal with all of life’s issues and situations and solve them. May your developing awareness of Reiki fill your life with the wonder and fascination.

A Reiki Healing Pillow
by Marnie Plunkkett
One evening while I was weeding my shade garden, I heard this haunting, yet soothing music waft over my neighbor’s fence. It was almost trance inducing with its simplicity of tones and sinuous melody. After a few evenings of hearing this, I began to envision a lush, shadowy, exotic garden that could dissipate stress simply by seeing it….and it was right next door…on the other side of that fence. What happened next is a blur to me, but I’m sure it involved me peeking through the wood slats of the fence startling my meditating neighbor, who I barely knew at the time, and embarrassing me.
Probably to ease the awkwardness of the situation, she asked about my gardens, specifically the herbs. Eventually I told her about my new adventure into dream pillow making. I explained how herbs placed in pillows can elicit certain types of dreaming and bring about a more relaxed state when awake. She shared with me information about Reiki and the healing power of crystals and wondered if we couldn’t combine these two gifts of nature. She needed something that could be hand-held and could hold a variety of small stones, yet be comfortable.
We combined the idea of the herbal dream pillow, meant to relax the user and influence dreaming, with crystals and Reiki energy, thus creating the Reiki Healing Pillow. The crystals (preferably smooth, tumbled stones) are held in a pocket on one side of the pillow with a Velcro closure. The pocket allows the user to insert the desired crystals and to change them as needed. The user can then place the pillow on the body, usually a joint, and inhale the relaxing aroma of the herbs. Meanwhile, the Reiki and crystals go to work on the body, helping to release any blockages of energy flow.
Pam had success with the Reiki Healing Pillow the first time she used it with a client. The client found the pillow particularly helpful with a muscular disorder in his face. He mentioned that while he held the pillow to his cheek, the aroma helped him relax, which in turn, aided the flow of Reiki. The crystals also helped to “amplify” the energy.
As for my personal experience, the pillow brought about the calmness of mind needed to channel Reiki. On a good day, it takes me a while to quiet my mind. If my four-year-old son has been in an argumentative and contrary mood, I have a particularly difficult time, and I don’t let go of those feelings easily. Well, I had one such week—not just a day. Finally, I was able to find some time for a much-needed self-Reiki session, giving instructions to my husband that I was not to be disturbed. I couldn’t wait to try out my pillow. No sooner had I begun, than my son bounded into the bedroom. “Can I have Reiki with you Mommy?” he asked. Knowing that this would end up like other attempts (a loss of interest after five full minutes of restless fidgeting), I reluctantly whispered a “yes.” Under these conditions, the pillow served a surprisingly different purpose, one that I was not expecting.
I found that inhaling the pillow immediately sent me to a more serene place. As I kept breathing, I was stilled. Bewildering to me, Ben copied what I did, and he too, calmed. We shared the pillow in this manner, and from our handling it, the area around us was infused with the scent of lavender and mugwort. He eventually lay down with his head on it. We took turns doing this. I also gave him Reiki through the pillow by placing it over his heart. He was in my lap, so my arms were around him. He put his hands there too, and I silently scribed the SHK symbol over his heart and mine. I physically and spiritually felt him accept my apologies, and I his! The pillow was something tangible that he could share with me, and the aroma initiated a relaxed state. Because it was charged with Reiki, the pillow aided in opening our hearts to forgive one another. Ben said that pillow smelled like love. He even found the pillow the next morning and snuggled with it during his morning routine. Since then he has kept it in his bed. Interestingly, on numerous occasions I had tried using a dream pillow in his room, but he never liked it!
Of course, the Reiki Healing Pillow can also be used as a dream pillow. Simply slip it inside your pillowcase and as your head rolls over the pillow the herbs will be gently crushed releasing their therapeutic aromas. Depending on the herbal and stone combinations, you can influence the type or “feel” of your dreams. Need help with obtaining a goal? Write your goal or prayer on a small slip of paper and then insert it into the pocket with the stone. Then think about this goal and the action needed for it to come to fruition as you drift off to sleep and who knows? Maybe your dreams will come true!1 Placing the HSZSN symbol on the pillow, with the intention of influencing your dreams or goals, would be beneficial to achieving results.
So how do you get started? I have provided a framework for how to sew one. If you are familiar with a sewing machine, these instructions are simple. If you are not, take the instructions to someone who does, and he or she will have it made for you in about five minutes. To make the pillow, you will need basic sewing knowledge and two pieces of fabric. Cut a piece of fabric into a 6-inch by 12-inch rectangle. Cut a second piece, the pocket, into a 6-inch by 6-inch square. Sew a narrow hem along one side of the pocket; turn each of the remaining three sides under about 1/4 inch and press. Place the pocket over one end of the rectangle with the wrong side of the pocket fabric facing the right side of the rectangle. (diagram 1) Attach a small Velcro closure on the inside of the top edge of the pocket that you hemmed. Sew the remaining three sides of the pocket to the rectangle. You should now have half of the rectangle covered with the pocket. Then, fold the rectangle so that the right sides face each other (the pocket will be hidden from view). You should now have a square. Sew along two of the open edges. (diagram 2) Turn right sides out. The pocket should now be on the outside again.
Through the only remaining open side, stuff your pillow with no more than 3/4 cup of dried herbs and any other filler you desire. Fiberfil, flaxseed, rice, or buckwheat hulls make good fillers. Don’t overstuff the pillow, as you want it to be somewhat flat, just an inch or two thick. Fold the edges of the open sides down just a bit and stitch closed. (diagram 3) Place any stones you choose into the remaining pocket and secure with Velcro.
Which dried herbs should you use? One herb we use is lavender, but I like to make a blend of herbs to intensify the relaxation and offer an aroma not commonly found in a store. Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris), known for its relaxing properties and effects on dreaming, blends nicely with lavender. Chamomile lends a nice aroma, but allergy sufferers might have a reaction to it. For an added benefit, I give my seedlings Reiki as they grow, and again when I use the herbs dried. The pillow itself should be charged with Reiki upon completion.
As for the stones, Pam says a good stone to start with, especially paired with lavender, is Celestite. It is an intriguing blue stone, sparkling with little stars within its depths. Celestite offers a gentle, soothing vibration. Some say it attracts angels. There are many resources available online and at your library regarding the history and uses of herbs, dream pillows, as well as crystals. The same goes for purchasing these items—try online if no local sources are available to you.
Think about what a wonderful gift this would make! Choose a fabric specific to the person, be it gender, age or passions. A child could be told that this is a magic pillow that will ward off those monsters in the closet.
I encourage you to make friends with a gardening neighbor or to ask a neighbor about all those colorful, sparkling rocks around their house. After all, this is how I met Pam; from that event a friendship developed, and she has attuned me through Reiki II. Just be sure you use better social graces than I did!

Reiki in the Military
by William Lee Rand
Reiki is being used in Veterans hospitals to treat solders returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. Fort Bliss, Texas a center for this activity. (Where else would you expect a military Reiki program to be located?) Here soldiers returning from war are treated for brain injury, PTSD and other conditions.
Psychologist John E. Fortunato started the The Fort Bliss Restoration and Resilience Center which opened July 2007. Patients volunteer for the program and receive about half the medication that those in other programs receive. The program makes use of a wide range of therapy including exercise, group sports activities, and various complementary therapies.
Reiki has been found effective in treating hyper arousal, anxiety, panic and tension induced physical pain. The program has been so successful that Army Chief of Staff Gen. George Casey said the program should be replicated throughout the military. The Army has also set aside $4 Million in grant money to study the effectiveness of complimentary therapies that include Reiki.

Donating To Those Who Help Others
by William Lee Rand
Donating your time or money to organizations that are helping others is a worthwhile thing to do. It helps those in need and also creates a wonderful feeling in your heart. When you pass on a portion of the value that has come into your life, you open the door even wider for you to recieve greater blessings in your life - which in turn allows you to help others even more. This is a wonderful process that is amazing to experience.
If you're feeling down or if your financial situation isn't what you'd like it to be, I suggest making a donation to a group that shares your values even if it's a small amount. You'll be suprised at how good this will make you feel and how doing this opens doors in your own life.
It is especially important to help now as donations are down since the recession started and those in need will really benefit by your generosity.
Because we love the earth and all the people in it, Vision Publications and the ICRT make regular donations to other non-Reiki groups. We donate 10% of our pre-tax dollars to environmentally and socially responsible organizations. We are happy to be able to help the world be a better place and to do our part to diminish suffering. Our goal is to create the world as a place where love is the guiding principle.
We thank you for your orders and the classes you are taking through us. In addition to the value you receive from the use of our products and classes, your purchases make these donations possible. Perhaps you'll be inspired to donate to them too.
Your purchases are supporting Women for Women, an organization that is helping women in foreign countries who have been the victims of war and violence create a better life for themselves and their families. As women’s lives improve they are better able to help their children and care for the family, so everyone wins! Donations are also being sent to Doctors Without Borders who supply emergency medical aid to humanitarian crisis situations around the world. They supply a wide range of help including medical care, sanitation, clean drinking water, food and more to those affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural and man-made disasters, and exclusion from health care. The Peace Alliance is working to establish a Department of Peace within the US government to reduce domestic and gang violence, child abuse, and various other forms of societal discord. Internationally, the Department will advise the President and Congress on solving international conflicts through the use of peace creating dialogue and other peace creating techniques. Through Greenpeace and the Natural Resources Defense Fund you are helping prevent global warming and protect the environment from being destroyed by unwise use. American Forests protect our forests and plant millions of new trees which help reduce the effects of global warming and create wildlife habitat. Through Amnesty International you're helping defend human rights worldwide. Gleaners Community Food Bank and America’s Second Harvest help feed the hungry by making efficient use of food that would otherwise go to waste.Your purchases also support Seeds of Peace to bring teenagers from Israel, Palestine, Egypt and other countries of conflict to a camp in Maine to learn advanced leadership skills for peace through reconciliation and coexistence. You are also supporting a shelter for abused women and children called "My Sisters' Place" located in Detroit, Michigan. At Partnership for the Homeless, you're helping homeless men, women and children, by providing food, shelter, and medical attention as well as helping them get jobs and permanent housing. At Mala Ma Popoki located in Hawaii, you're helping rescue abandon cats and at the Animal Legal Defense Fund, you're helping end the suffering and abuse of animals. The National Health Freedom Coalition is preventing unnecessary government interference for the practice of Reiki and other alternative healing methods. .
Thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
William Lee Rand

World Peace Card Meditation
Wednesday, June 24,7:30pm
(based on local time in your time zone)
You are invited to take part in the fifth World Peace Card Meditation. Please mark your calendar and forward this notice to all your friends.
Thanks for Your Help!
Because so many of you forwarded this notice to your friends, there have been over 95,000 downloads of the World Peace Cards. This is a tremendous increase in the number of people using the cards. So far the total number of World Peace Card sets downloaded, received from our free offer and from our magazine has been over 110,000! I hope you have been using your peace cards as their use brings blessings to the world as well as to you.
A sixth World Peace Card group meditation has been scheduled for Wednesday, June 24 at 7:30pm. This is local time in your time zone. This method has been chosen because of the special effect it produces. As people meditate in each successive time zone the energy builds like a wave which gets stronger and stronger as it circles the planet. Because of the higher dimensional nature of consciousness, the energy of peace will be transmitted for a full 24 hours and continue long after this.
Reports from those who took part in the previous meditations indicate many had powerful spiritual experiences. As they united with those taking part in the meditation a feeling of peace developed within that stayed with each for a long time. Some saw beautiful golden light surrounding the planet and others felt that a web of fear was dissipating and being replaced with trust in others and for our future.
All those who have received the cards are being asked to meditate on world peace at this time. By taking part in this group meditation, you’ll be joining thousands of people who will be using the cards to bring peace to the world. By joining together, the affect we have will be greatly multiplied. This powerful experience and will help shift the vibration of our wonderful planet into a higher state of consciousness. As you use the cards to meditate on world peace, you will be a beacon through which peace will spread around the planet which will have a positive uplifting effect on all people.
Please set aside this time to meditate with the cards. The suggested meditation period is 15 minutes, but of course you can meditate longer if you’d like to. The technique I’d like you to use is based on allowing yourself to be a beacon of peace. The World Peace Cards hold the vibration of the World Peace Grids which have been placed at spiritually significant locations and are relay stations for higher consciousness. By simply opening to their energy, you’ll become a channel for their love and peace which will flow through you to all the people on Earth. To do this, hold the cards in your hands or place them in front of you. Then simply meditate on peace.
We are entering a new era. Our entire planet including all the people and living things are moving into a place where it will be much easier to solve our problems and to create peace, prosperity and happiness for everyone. The World Peace Card meditation will quicken this process, making it easier for people to experience this new quality of higher consciousness and will provide great benefit for all people. Since this benefit will be flowing through you out to everyone on the planet, you'll be blessed by this experience as well.
Many have received the cards in the mail or in the Reiki News Magazine while others have downloaded them from our web site. If you would like additional copies of the cards, please download them using this link and print as many copies as you can use. Please feel free to give them to your friends. Also, forward this email to anyone you feel would like to take part in the meditation.

Reiki Stories
Reiki Helps Car Accident Injury and Stroke
One day after my yoga class I witnessed a car accident where an older gentleman was thrown out of his jeep right on the cement sidewalk. He laid there without any signs of life, with a severely bleeding head injury. Without any thoughts or hesitation I parked me car and walked toward him. I started to give him Reiki, and gently moved his body to a safer place. I remember talking to him and sending a lots of Reiki energy to him, he gently opened his eyes and he smiled and thanked me. When the ambulance came I said good-bye to him and one man followed me. I turned around and he said that he witnessed angels around me and the injured man and asked me if I was a nurse. I should clarify also that before this occurrence I had tremendous fear of blood. Reiki just melted my fear completely away.
Well, a couple of months later I flew to Prague, Czech republic to visit my father. He was then 89 years old and lonely, since my mother passed away a couple of years before. One evening I went out with my girlfriend to very a beautiful art show and shortly after the show went home to be with my dad. I found my father under the table unconscious in a large pool of blood. Without any hesitation I started to flow Reiki to him and stayed very calm. I moved my dad to more a comfortable place and I was talking to him. My father opened his eyes, and with a gentle expression and confidence on his face he told that he knows he will be all right. At this point I called the ambulance. The results from MRI were pretty grim, major brain damage from the stroke. To make the story short, my father's mind recovered as I often joked with him that his memory was better than mine and he lived to be 91. I am so grateful to Reiki for all the love, courage, creativity, opening of my heart and joy that it brought into my life. Dascha Friedl
Hospice/Cancer Healing
A friend of mine had lung cancer and when I found out about it she was already in the hospital. The doctor's held no hope and she was dying when I and another friend arrived. She was in a lot of pain and the nurses were contacting her family to come and make arrangements. A matter of hours they said. My friend and I started to use Reiki over the area where her tumor was and then proceeded to do a full body. She said the heat felt so good to her because she had been so cold. We stayed about an hour and realized her aura was very close to her body. The family came and we left to give them privacy. The next day we went back and she asked us to do "whatever it was we did again" she said she slept like a baby and had no pain. The first time in months. We gave her another treatment. The nurses saw what we were doing and closed the door to give us privacy. She sat up and spoke for a little while then fell asleep as we continued treating her. The next day I went back to see her and my heart sank; the bed was empty. I asked where she was...(meaning which funeral home) they said she went home. I could not believe it. I found her at a home of one of her friends who asked us to give Reiki treatments to her because of a bad back. We did this gladly since she was taking care of our friend. My friend eventually passed (two months later) but not in pain and fear in a hospital bed but in a home with people who loved her by her side. I treated her with Reiki energy until it felt like she was ready to go forward. She had no fear...and no pain and it was a tremendous blessing for me ...one I will never forget.

Incest Trauma Healed
During a Reiki session a couple years ago, it became clear to me that the young lady I was administering Reiki to carried a great sadness with her. I became aware of the spirit of an old man to the right of me during her session, and tried to ignore his image as I was still struggling to marry my beliefs as a Christian minister with Reiki. But his presence came in stronger and stronger to which I finally asked "What do I do here God?” Instantly I was made aware that this man was the young lady's grandfather who had been inappropriate with her as a young child and he was desperately seeking forgiveness and wanted me to tell her he was sorry and that he wants her to be free and receive healing as well. When I relayed the message she immediately poured her heart out in tears and shared with me that she had even confessed this situation to her folks who did not believe her, but was grateful for this experience as she was truly able to forgive her grandfather and BOTH were freed from the chains of bondage they had experienced together.. . Hallelujah! This was another confirmation to me of the freedom to facilitate healing for others through Reiki has brought and I am so very grateful to our lineage of teachers who have taken the courage to carry on this practice. God is good. Namaste', Carrie Wood
Reiki Works!
I have given eight treatments since I got to my new mountain top home almost a month ago, and they are incredible. My patients are deeply affected by them. The first saw colors around her third eye, and fell into a meditative state while receiving the treatment. She said she could feel her extremities more than she had since she was young.
The second treatment was just as incredible, with excellent results. The third, the gentleman was astounded, as he had never received one before. He was deeply moved by it and felt so much better the next day.
I have given two to my hostess and she feels so much better. I am working on her veins and arteries. She has a disease that is very unusual. I am also working on her lungs as she is a long time smoker.
I worked on another person, who it just so happened, turned out to be a naturally born healer and clairsentient, like myself.
And I just recently worked on a man who has had a spinal column injury, brain damage and a carotid artery that was 85% blocked. I won't know until he goes to the Doctor how the artery is, but I could feel the brain matter repairing itself. He was affected deeply and now is channeling his Native American Honorable Ancestors. His channeling lasted from 9:30 until 12:30 that evening. He is still receiving insight from them, and they will be returned to our weekly meeting next Wednesday.
Thank you so much for all the education, knowledge and wisdom you have shared with so many! Eternal Blessings, Aimie Halo Howe
Reiki Fixes Broken Cell Phone
I am a Reiki Master and have been giving attunements and distant Reiki Healing to others since 2002. Recently, when I was using my cell phone, my grandson came and pulled the cell phone from my hand. It fell down on the floor and stopped working. We tried to get it to work but were unsuccessful. When I approached a cell servicing centre, he also examined it and failed to identify the problem. I came back to my house, and thought why I shouldn’t try Wonder Reiki on it. I then immediately invited Reiki in to my palms, and sent Reiki Energy to my cell phone for a few minutes. Miraculously it started functioning! Thanks Reiki Energy! Raja.Krishna Rao
