The Attunement Experience
by Penny Quest
This is an excerpt from an article in the Spring 2003 back issue of the Reiki News Magazine.
At each level of attunement (Reiki 1, 2 or 3) you become able to tap into a higher, wider channel of that Universal Energy, and the vibration rate of your energy body is increased. After an attunement is over, students often describe the beautiful spiritual or mystical experiences they have received, such as "seeing" wonderful colors, visions or past life experiences. Others report receiving personal messages or profound healing, sensing the presence of guides or angelic beings, or simply having a feeling of complete peace. Some people go through a real shift in their awareness immediately afterwards, describing the sensation as almost like being reborn, so that they experience everything around them more intensely - colors are brighter, their sense of smell is enhanced, and sounds are sharper. Others feel a buzzing or heightened sensitivity in the crown centre for a short while, or describe a sense of floating or light-headedness. All of these reactions are absolutely normal - but so is experiencing very little, which whilst a little disappointing for some students, does not mean the attunement hasn't worked! An attunement always works. The success rate is 100% all of the time. It is not possible to fail a Reiki course, provided a qualified Reiki Master carries out the attunement process with you. You will be able to channel Reiki. But you may or may not necessarily feel anything, at least at first.
I am one of the lucky ones, however, as I have always had interesting reactions during and after my attunements as a Reiki student. For example, when I received the Tibetan/Usui Master attunement from William Lee Rand I had an amazing experience, where I felt I was "transported" from Newcastle-upon-Tyne in England, back to Tibet, to a Tibetan monastery high up in the Himalayas, and I found myself kneeling before my Buddhist teacher, receiving a Healing Empowerment. My body in Newcastle apparently moved in accordance with the instructions of my Buddhist teacher, rather than with William's requirements to sit still, and I could feel myself bending far forward, holding my hands out in front of me with my head bowed, and then bending my head far back, and feeling (and smelling) sweet ash being placed on my forehead. Afterwards I could sense myself receiving new robes, and standing by a wall looking out across the mountains, and I could smell the sweet sharpness of the cold air. It was a wonderful and very profound experience, and one which - obviously - I remember as clearly now as I did when it happened nine years ago, and which perhaps explains my sense of connectedness with the Buddhist roots of Reiki.
But Reiki students aren't the only ones to have wonderful experiences during the attunement process. It can happen to the Reiki Master too! For instance, during every attunement ceremony I am always aware of the presence of my Reiki guides, and actually see Usui and Hayashi, and occasionally Takata, when I first begin, and then again before I close the ceremony, when I thank them for their help, which is always a beautiful and sacred experience for me. As each attunement is carried out in a sacred space - which in effect is out of space and out of time - this makes it possible to link with other time frames, and occasionally when I begin attuning a student I become aware that both the student and myself are dressed differently, either in Japanese traditional dress, or in Buddhist robes. These images are very clear, and I can both see and feel the different textures in the material, and sense different smells, although I cannot "see" beyond the immediate space around the student and myself. The attunement process I carry out is also slightly different, although when I step out of that "space" to the next student, the memory of what I have just done has gone - unfortunately!
My only explanation for these happenings is that perhaps I have been a Reiki Master before (or its Buddhist equivalent, which always feels much, much further back in time) and I have attuned that student before in a previous life. Sometimes when this happens the student will report a feeling of whirling down a tunnel at the time I placed my hands on their head, but this isn't always the case, although there does seem a tendency for those students to be able to channel Reiki particularly well, i.e. they report a lot of reaction in their hands when using Reiki for the first time. Also, if this happens during a Second Degree class they have no trouble at all learning the symbols - well, I guess they wouldn't, if they'd already learned them before! I must admit, I had the same experience when I did Reiki 2 - even the Distant Symbol was easy and familiar, as was the Usui Master symbol when I did Reiki Third Degree.

Is Charging a Fee Always Necessary?
by William Lee Rand
In western Reiki there is the assumption made by some that you should always receive payment or some form of energy exchange for a Reiki treatment. Many believe that if you don’t do this, problems are going to occur. Reiki is unusual in the healing field in this respect as other methods of healing don’t have this requirement. And in fact some healing schools and individuals have the opposite idea stating that you should never charge for healing.
Because of this, many have wondered where this idea came from and if it is valid. Research indicates that Mrs. Takata was the one who added this rule to her training. And because of her story about Usui sensei and his problems with the beggars it’s believed that he was the one who created it. Also, according to another of her stories, Hayashi sensei also recommended that one always charge money for Reiki sessions.
However, research indicates that this doesn’t seem to be the case. In October, 2001, I traveled to Kyoto, Japan along with a number of other Reiki practitioners to take Reiki I&II training from Mrs. Yamaguchi and her son Tadao. Mrs. Yamaguchi had been a student of Hayashi sensei’s, having assisted him in many of his trainings which were held at her home when she was a young woman.
In the training we received from her in Kyoto, we learned many interesting things including a ritual called Reiki Kohan in which we each received a blessing from Mrs. Yamaguchi whose purpose was to increase the effectiveness of our Reiki. We were also told by her that Hayashi sensei did not require payment for Reiki sessions at his clinic. His treatments were free as they were intended for people too poor to afford regular medical care. This contradicts the idea that one must always require payment or something in return for Reiki sessions.
We are not sure why Mrs. Takata added the requirement for payment, but if Hayashi sensei didn't practice this way, then it can be safely assumed that the idea that one must require payment or an energy exchange for Reiki sessions isn’t part of the Usui system. Therefore, Reiki is no different than anything else in this respect. You have the right to charge any fee you decide you’d like to charge or to can give Reiki sessions free if that’s what you feel is right.

The Horse Whisperer
by William Lee Rand
This is an excerpt from an article in the Fall 2003 back issue of the Reiki News Magazine.
While on Maui last May, I had the good fortune to attend a Horse Whisperer training lead by Franklin Levinson. Many of his methods are based on those used in the movie of the same name starring Robert Redford.
According to Franklin, there are two ways we can interact with a horse. One is through force (i.e., fear-based control); the other, to lead it through trust, respect, knowledge, and mutual agreement (i.e., love). The first way produces a slave, a being whose actions are motivated by fear of punishment, a captive. The other way produces a willing partner, a loyal and trusted friend, and a relationship built on respect.
Franklin teaches students how to communicate and interact with horses on a primal level, to connect directly with a horse's psyche and instincts. Horses are amazingly sensitive, intelligent, and aware. Being herd animals, they have a highly developed ability to understand and respond to body language and to look for and respond to a leader. (We also found they are amazingly telepathic and are healers.) With this understanding, it's possible to get horses to do whatever you want them to do-within reason-if you first gain their trust and show them you are worthy of being their leader.
We were shown several body movements and postures horses use to communicate various feelings and ideas. For example, if a horse likes you, it will show affection by placing its head on your chest. If it likes what you're doing and is receptive to it, it will lower its head and blow through its lips. We were shown how to become friends by focusing on feelings of peace and love-which the horse can feel-and by petting and scratching the horse. Once trust is formed, the horse will want to be near you; so if you begin walking around the corral, the horse will follow. Doing this establishes you as the leader. Then by using a wand and standing in the center of the corral and simply holding it up off to your side, the horse will begin running around the outside of the corral. If you lower the wand, the horse will stop and walk back to you.
One of the horses we worked with was named Dukie. We were able to get him to jump over a short barrier as he ran around the corral. We found that the clearer your expectation and the stronger your energy about this, the better rapport you had with the horse and the more responsive it would become. When doing this, I felt a definite feeling of partnership and shared love, that Dukie was doing what I wanted because he truly enjoyed doing so.
After each student interacted with the horse in this way, Franklin had us do something that produced an amazing result. When it was each person's turn, Franklin asked him or her to close their eyes and tell what was seen or felt. Many would start crying and say that the horse was healing some emotional wound they had from childhood or other experiences.

When it was my turn, I began doing Reiki on Dukie, and he immediately took on a different posture, which Franklin noticed. He placed his head down in a receptive posture, and Franklin said the horse really liked what I was doing. Then, after this, he asked me to place my arms on the corral bar and not pay any attention to Dukie. When I did this, Dukie came up behind me and began nuzzling me on the back around my heart in a very gentle and affectionate way. Then he began nibbling on my ear with his lips. This felt both unusual and wonderful.
Then I was asked to go inward and tell what I saw. Dukie began to place an image in my mind that was more than just an image. The horse was running through a field of grass, and the sun was shining a glorious, warm golden light. The horse was filled with a sense of being one with nature and filled with great joy-the joy of life and the joy of being free. Then I felt Dukie ask if I would like to join him, and as soon as I said yes, I was there with him, bathed in the energy and connected with all the forces of nature and feeling so free. This was very moving, and I feel that it was Dukie's way of thanking me for the Reiki I had shared with him.
Later, after we left and were on the beach watching windsurfers, Dukie came to me inwardly and again nuzzled the back of my heart. Then he began working with my solar plexus energy. There were some stuck negative feelings and energies there that I had been dealing with and working to heal, but hadn't been able to do so. I felt the blocks melting and releasing, and they were gone. This was another amazing experience and a real miracle.
I'm blessed to have spent this healing time with Dukie, merging with his consciousness and feeling what he feels: noble, mystical feelings of grace, strength, loyalty, emotional clarity, love, and a willingness to help. I learned so much about being a healer and the potential within all living beings.

Homer The Orphaned Squirrel
by William Lee Rand

This is Homer. He was only 2"
long when he found me. |
While doing some yard work in front of my house, I noticed a very small baby squirrel on the drive way. I looked closely at him, but he didn't run away which seemed strange. So, wanting to gain a rapport with him, I got down on all fours and slowly moved around him, letting him know I was a friend. He continued to remain in the same spot, but I could tell he was trying to communicate with me. He seemed to almost be crying and it seemed like he was trying to tell me that something really bad had happened. Then I stood up and began sending him Reiki. He immediately ran over to my foot. As I reached down he jumped right into my gloved hand. As I brought him up, he still seemed really scared, but calmed down as I gave him more Reiki.
I would have liked to take care of him, but because I travel so much I knew I wouldn't be able to. So, I went next door to my neighbors who have two children and showed them the baby squirrel. They were excited and their mother came out and said that she had seen a mother squirrel in the road that had been killed by a car just yesterday. So we thought that perhaps this had been the mother of this baby and that's what the little squirrel had been trying to tell me. That it needed help - some one to take care of it because it's just a little baby and its mother had been killed. So we got a box and placed him in it which seemed to make him feel happy - like he knew we were going to help him.
The two neighbor children took care of the baby squirrel and made a small hole in the screen door so it could go outside. The baby squirrel would go out and come back and would often play with the chipmunks in front of the house. He stayed out longer and longer until finally he didn't come back, but could be seen from time to time playing in the front yard and climbing in the trees

Operation Cancelled after Reiki!
Last year I had a desperate telephone call from a concerned husband. His wife had been suffering from severe neuralgia pains in her face for six years. She suffered this pain 24 hours a day and in the course of the six years she had several operations on her face to freeze the nerves to no avail. The pain continued and even the strongest painkillers could not subdue the pain. Her husband brought her to my Reiki clinic on a Friday morning. She was due to have a "brain operation" at Groote Schuur Hospital on the Monday morning.
Due to the severity of the pain, I did not have any hope of stopping the pain, my only purpose was to just help her relax and not to fear this pending operation. I worked through her chakras and spent a long time with her. When I completed the Reiki treatment, I had a "flash" reminder of the teachings of my Reiki Master regarding the extension of the fingers. I then returned my attention to her face on the side where she had this constant pain. I "extended" my fingers to the inside of her face, bone, nerves and flesh and actually felt a small ridge and worked on that ridge for approximately 2 minutes until the ridge vanished. I felt a tremendous amount of "energy" pouring into her face. I asked her how the pain was. Her reply: "The pain is gone", and she burst into tears. I called her husband to the therapy room where the three of us prayed together to say thank you. The operation was cancelled and the pain never returned again. She is still in contact with me. She only had the one Reiki treatment. To me this was truly a miracle! I've experienced many healings but this one beats them all. Reiki master, Sonia Carlile
Reiki and Uterine Cancer
Six years ago while a Level Two Reiki healer I was witness to an extraordinary healing of a woman diagnosed with cancer. My Reiki Master (Colleen Chauntler of Gladstone, Australia) was staying with me at the time. A woman was brought to my home presenting a distended lower abdomen and we were told by her friends that she had been sick for some months. In the week prior to this visit she had a scan and had been told by doctors that she had a large tumour in her uterus that was probably cancerous. Surgery was planned for the following week. We decided to give her three sessions of Reiki healing throughout the week, hoping that would encourage rapid healing for her after her surgery. Rather than the usual hand positions, three of us worked on her-my Reiki Master held her hands on the patient's lower abdomen, I had my hands on her head (crown) and another Level Two healer (Sharon Honatana) was at her feet. We stayed like that for approximately an hour each session.
On the day she was to check in to the hospital I saw a large black energy in the shape of a ball and surrounded by what appeared to be sparking energy lift from her abdomen and rise up into the air. It kept rising and disappeared through the ceiling of the room. I asked if anyone else had seen it and each of the others confirmed the same thing, including the patient. She duly went on to check in to the hospital, and when they examined her they could not feel the tumour; they sent her for a scan and it had gone. She told us with great humour that the doctors were arguing and quite flustered at the result. They eventually went on to do an exploratory operation but no tumour could be found. She had therapy for the few cancer cells they did find and is fit and healthy now.
The woman believes she was healed by Satya Sai Baba and Reiki. On the night before her last session she said she dreamed she was in her car and it was teetering on the edge of a cliff. Below her was blackness; in her rear-vision mirror she could see a long road, and walking along this road was Sai Baba. He came toward her car and stood looking at her. She cried out to him to help her and he reached down and pulled her car off the edge of the cliff and placed it back on the road. Penelope (Penny) Hayward
Reiki and Prostate Cancer
With the thought of promoting Reiki, I called an assisted-living center to offer an Introduction to Reiki class with free mini-Reiki sessions. When I asked the social director if he was familiar with Reiki he said, "Let me tell you my story," and proceeded to tell me that he had been recently diagnosed with prostate cancer. His massage therapist, Reiki Level II, had been told by a psychic that he (the social director) needed to receive three treatments in close succession by three Reiki healers. I quickly set things in motion and our team performed Reiki on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday. No other treatment was given. Prior to treatment his test confirmed he was 4.0 and his doctor diagnosed that he had prostate cancer. The Monday after we completed the three treatments he was again tested. On the following Wednesday he called to say the test results showed 0.3 and that he was free of cancer. He remarked that in all of his life the test results were never that low. I am so honored to have been a part of his healing. I feel honored to be called by Reiki, a major part of my life. Phran Gacher, Stamford, Connecticut
Reiki and Heart Attacks
Without a sound, a man collapsed, sliding silently from his chair and onto the floor. People crowded around him, and one person, a Reiki Level One, began hands-on while I went into another room. I could clearly feel his heart beat. It was very faint and squishy (a technical term?).
As energy began to flow, a slightly different connection was made and I found that my heart was beating for his. That was new to me, but it added a lot of depth to Usui-Sensei's statement to "Always expect there to be oneness." The man was sitting up by the time the paramedics arrived.
Less than a week later, a friend phoned. She had just called 911; her husband was having a heart attack. His heartbeat was entirely different: fluttery and erratic, a bit like static on the radio. Again the link was made allowing my heart to beat for his. He too was sitting up when the paramedics arrived.
Similar scenes have happened over the years-similar, yet each one entirely different. Panic attacks respond in a similar manner, except that the victims' breathing and heart rate move into synch with mine. There seems to be a definite increase in panic attacks nowadays. W. Craig
Reiki Heals Brain
After I receive an attunement for Reiki II my husband suffered a severe heart attack. He was dead for seven minutes. While he was receiving electrical reanimation I gave him Reiki. After this he slept for three weeks. During this time we formed a group with some other people and gave him distant Reiki too. The doctors (I am a pediatrician) told me that if he survived he would be severe brain damage because of being dead for so long. Well none of those things happened. He is great! He recovered totally and now he works with Reiki and we both are very happy. Still many doctors do not understand what happened with him; others instead, are learning Reiki! Love to you all, and thank you very much for this opportunity. Monica Pazos
Reiki Helps After Surgery
My mother-in-law had knee joint replacement surgery for both knees. Due to a heavy dose of drugs as an accompaniment of this operation she was disoriented and was tortured by hallucinations and nightmares. She asked doctors for sleep-inducing medicine but they declined. She was supposed to keep moving her legs after regular intervals as part of the healing procedure and even to do some leg-raising exercise with the help of her nurse even though it was an agonizing process. So, after giving her Reiki for half an hour with the help of my Reiki teacher and friend I applied Reiki to her room in the hospital. She slept peacefully and the next morning she felt she could do her exercises with less effort and quite a bit of ease. Her recovery quickened with the application of Reiki to her room. I think Reiki not only increased the efficacy of the medication, but it added its healing grace to her quicker recovery. Vishvojha
