Releasing Expectations
by Mari Hall

Sometimes we expect Reiki to give us a certain outcome. The clients we work with must feel something; have a cathartic experience or a BIG release, so that they are free of pain and healed. Expectation is a nice way of saying we are being demanding.

We must learn to be compassionately detached with no expectation or demand that the energy do anything. We know in our innermost being that Reiki is working for the client’s highest and greatest good, as well as for ours. We step back (i.e., get our ego out of the way) and let the energy work. This can be harder to achieve when we are working with family members, and we want so badly for them to be well. If this is the case, it may be best to refer the family member to another Reiki practitioner who is not emotionally involved.

When practitioners ask me why they sometimes feel tired or unwell after giving a Reiki treatment, one of the questions I ask is: “How much of your ego was present in the treatment at that time?” Usually the answer is: “But, I wanted them to feel better” or “I knew I could heal them.”

We must be diligent when treating with Reiki to remember that we are only the instruments through which the energy passes. It is our duty to be the best instruments possible, but we do nothing but witness the client’s miracles. The person who receives the energy is using it; they are healing themselves. Have you heard the saying “Let go and let God”? This is the same…Let go and let Reiki. I believe that Reiki is God’s unconditional love, light and grace. It is a privilege to have this special relationship with Reiki.

Children Giving Reiki
by Kylie Holmes

This is an excerpt from the complete article that appears in the summer edition of the Reiki News Magazine.

I live in a village called Abbotsley, which is near Cambridge in England . I teach children meditation, and I am also a writer and Intuitive Angel Therapist. As a Reiki Master and Karuna Reiki ® Master, I use Reiki everyday in bringing up my three spiritually aware children, Jade (eight), Amba (six), and Leo, who is two. The two older children have discovered for themselves creative ways to use Reiki.

I first introduced Reiki to my children during pregnancy. I did daily treatments throughout the nine months to connect with the unborn child. Then using my intuition, I attuned them to Reiki whilst they where still in the womb. So you could say that my children are “Natural Born Reiki Practitioners. ”

As parents we want the best for our children and go to great lengths to achieve that. For my children, I wanted to make certain that they felt self-assured in what they set out to achieve. It is very important to my husband and me that our children feel balanced and grounded, and that they know they can come and talk to us about anything that troubles them.

I wanted my children to be able to help themselves when they are hurt, sad, or afraid. I knew that Reiki would act as a self-empowerment tool, which would serve them throughout their lives. Feeling that they are safe and protected with Reiki would empower them to live life to the fullest.

Some would argue that I should have waited until they were old enough to understand and allowed them to have a choice in whether they wished to be attuned. Others suggest that I’ve taken away the Children’s free will.I do not feel that this is the case. I believe that before we re-enter each lifetime, our soul lessons are agreed, sometimes with many different souls aware of our experiences. As souls we come into this life to experience certain opportunities for growth and certain soul lessons. I believe that, as a family, one of our soul contracts was to incorporate Reiki into our everyday lives. I really do sense that they gave me permission for initiation to Reiki while in the womb so it would always play a part in their lives.

Raising spiritually aware children can sometimes be challenging. Questioning everything around them and asserting their point of view can sometimes leave me flummoxed as to where to go next. I have found that adopting the Reiki Principles and entwining them into their upbringing has helped us as a family and helped each individual child to strive and find their greatest assets.

When they are challenged, the Principles remind them to express how they feel. If something is disconcerting the children—being bullied at school, for example—we sit down together and talk about what is troubling them. We also discuss what is the best way forward in dealing with the bullying. Growing up with Reiki creates a greater world for them. They are learning to love and respect themselves, the people they come into contact with, and the environment they live in.

I would like to make it very clear that my husband and I do not force the children to do Reiki; it is their choice. They make it freely. Jade and Amba use their intuition in finding new ways to use Reiki to help with family life, their friends and themselves. All three children can do Reiki anytime, anywhere. For example when they watch television, they often give each other effective Reiki sessions. Or when they are reading a book quietly on their own, they may do a self-treatment.

Jade and Amba like to give Reiki to their Dad when he has a headache. Theyfeel the Reiki energy as a tingling sensation as it leaves their hands. My husband Eric remarks that their energy is at all times strong even when they move their hands to different positions . Amba also likes to give Reiki to our kitten, Bracken, who just purrs away with contentment. Jade informs me that when she is giving Reiki to her guinea pig, Poppy squeaks and squawks in a happy way.

Both of the girls use Reiki to help their friends at school. Jade, the eight-year-old, describes a school experience with Reiki:

When my best friend Georgina fell over in the playground, she hurt herself. Her knee was bleeding and I put my hand over Georgina ’s knee and she stoppedcrying. I said that I was doing Reiki and Georgina asked what Reiki was. I told that Reiki helps people to feel better when they are sad. Georgina said that she felt heat and warmth from my hands and that her knee stopped bleeding. Georgina told a few friends from our class that I was doing Reiki. They then pretended to do Reiki themselves on each other.

Amba regularly gives Reiki to her best friend. In her words:

My best friend is called Jack. Jack comes to school in a wheelchair and I like to help him whenever I can. I place my hand on Jack’s back so that the Reiki can help him learn. Reiki also helps Jack to stay at school all day so he can play with us at playtime. When Jack is sad I like to give him a ‘Reiki Hug’ to make him feel better.

When Jade and Amba feel unsure of a new project at school, they place their hands on their hearts to give them courage and confidence to move forward without fear so they can accomplish their tasks to the best of their ability. They also do Reiki on themselves before they do their homework. Amba likes to give herself Reiki when she is learning her spelling words. When bedtime comes, Amba says if she cannot sleep, she will give one of her favourite toys Reiki. She then cuddles the toy, which helps her go to sleep.

What Makes Reiki Symbols Work?
by William Lee Rand

Editor’s note: This is an abbreviated version of a longer article that will appear in a future issue of Reiki News Magazine (print version).

My understanding of the Reiki symbols has developed from multiple sources and from different ways of looking at them, as well as from my experience of working with them for more than 25 years. During this time I’ve thought about them from a metaphysical as well as a scientific perspective and have closely examined the experiences I’ve had as well as those reported by students and others experienced in their use. I have also talked with highly developed intuitives and clairvoyants about what they see happening when Reiki symbols are used and how they perceive them working.

The following description is based on how Reiki symbols work within the style of Reiki that I practice. For the most part, I believe Reiki symbols work similarly for most styles of Reiki; however, I believe there are some styles of Reiki in which the symbols work differently than the way I describe them. This may be due to a difference in understanding and intention about the symbols and/or a difference in lineage, both physical and spiritual. Keep in mind that my description is just one way of looking at them. There may be other ways of describing how they work that are different than this description and also meaningful.

Reiki symbols work in a transcendental way that is different in some ways than how other symbols work. Often the purpose of non-Reiki symbols is to convey information. Some common examples are traffic lights and other roadside symbols, computer icons, and scientific symbols. Other non-Reiki symbols, such as the heart symbol or religious and metaphysical symbols can create more of an emotional or spiritual effect within the person. These emotional and spiritual symbols often create their effects automatically based on a conditioning process the person has been exposed to in conjunction with the symbol.

This conditioning takes place in the stimulus/response mechanism that functions within the sympathetic nervous system. (The Russian physician, Ivan Pavlov discovered the functioning of this mechanism through an experiment with dogs.) It most likely evolved as a survival mechanism, allowing a person or animal to have a quicker response to a threat after having been exposed to that threat previously. It can also help people carry out routine actions such as driving, work or sports activities with less need to think about them.

The stimulus/response mechanism is frequently made use of in advertising. As an example, one television ad depicts images of people enjoying themselves in the summertime, having fun, filled with excitement and happiness, diving into the water, swimming, and appearing to feel refreshed. Then the same people are shown drinking Coca-Cola. This image is repeated within the ad and the ad is shown over and over. The intention is that through repeated exposure, the viewer will become conditioned so that if they are feeling tired, down or depressed, but would like to feel good, they will automatically think of Coca-Cola. The triggering of habitual behavior, both healthy and unhealthy, takes place in part because of activity within the stimulus/response mechanism.

Reiki symbols make use of the stimulus/response mechanism. However, because of the nature of the stimulus (the attunement energy), the time needed to create the stimulus/response process is greatly reduced. Also, the response to the attunement takes place within a higher part of the student’s energy field, a part that is normally beyond the reach of most stimuli. This is why the process is termed transcendental because it transcends our usual everyday levels of consciousness.

Before or during class, the student is exposed to the Reiki symbols. They are shown the symbols and usually asked to memorize them. Then the student receives the attunement. (Some teachers show their students the symbols after the attunement. This is an exception, but because of the transcendental nature of Reiki and its ability to transmit information directly into the student’s nervous system and energy field, the effect is the same either way.) During the attunement, the symbols and the Reiki energies associated with them are placed into the Medulla Oblongata, which is located in the lower part of the brain. This part of the brain acts as a conduction pathway, sending impulses up to others parts of the brain and down through the spinal column. It is also the location of many automatic reflexes such as heart rate, breathing, swallowing, etc. and therefore is an ideal location for the placement of the symbols.

The attunement process creates an automatic reflex mechanism or stimulus/response process within the Medulla Oblongata and other parts of the sympathetic nervous system that are linked to higher parts of the energy field. Whenever the student intends to use a symbol(s), such as when they draw it, visualize it, or speak its name, (stimulus) their energy field automatically responds (response) by opening up to and bringing in the higher frequency spiritual energies that the symbol represents. Thus, through the use of Reiki symbols and the attunement that activates them, the practitioner has access to a broader, more effective range of Reiki frequencies than they would have otherwise.

This is one of the miracles of Reiki. The stimulus/response process for the symbols is created very quickly during the attunement and does not require the repeated exposure to a stimulus that is usually necessary. Also, the response takes place within a higher part of a person’s energy system, beyond the ego and conscious mind in an area not usually accessible to most people, unless they’ve had years of training. Because of this, the attunement allows Reiki to be learned by anyone. We can only be grateful for such a wonderful gift, available to us at a time when it is so important that we use all the resources we can to solve the problems that we, the people of the earth now face.

Reiki for Animals Code of Ethics
by Kathleen Prasad

Guiding Principles:
• I believe that animals are equal partners in the healing process.
• I honor animals as being not only my clients, but also my teachers in the journey of healing.
• I understand that all animals have physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects, to which Reiki can bring profound healing responses.
• I believe that bringing Reiki to the human/animal relationship is transformational to the human view of the animal kingdom.
• I dedicate myself to the virtues of humility, integrity, compassion and gratitude in my Reiki treatment of animals.

In working with animals, I follow these guidelines:
• I work in partnership with the animal.
• I always ask permission of the animal before beginning, and respect his or her decision to accept or refuse any treatment. I listen intuitively as well as observing the animal’s body language in determining the response.
• I allow each animal to choose how to receive his or her treatment; thus each treatment could be a combination of hands-on, short distance and/or distant healing, depending on the animal’s preference.
• I let go of my expectations about how the treatment should progress and/or how the animal should behave during the treatment, and simply trust Reiki.
• I accept the results of the treatment without judgment and with gratitude toward Reiki and the animal’s openness and participation in the process.

In working with the human companions of animals, I will:
• Share information before the treatment about my healing philosophy, the Reiki healing system and what to expect in a typical treatment, as well as possible outcomes, including the possibility of healing reactions.
• Provide a clear policy ahead of time regarding fees, length of treatment and cancellation policy, as well as “postponement” policy, should the animal not want the treatment that day.
• Never diagnose. I will always refer clients to a licensed veterinarian when appropriate.
• Honor the privacy of the animals and their human companions.
• Share intuition received during Reiki treatments, with compassion and humility, for the purpose of supporting their understanding of the healing process.
• Respect the human companion’s right to choose the animal’s healing journey, selecting the methods, both holistic and/or conventional that he or she deems most appropriate, with the support and advice of a trusted veterinarian.

Reiki Stories

Reiki Heals Colon
An acquaintance of mine asked me if I would give him Reiki because he had severe stomach pain and could not keep any food in his stomach. I went to his home twice over a two week period and sent distance healing twice as well.

On Friday March 10, I received a call from this person, only this time he was in the hospital. He went for a colonoscopy and they immediately admitted him and scheduled him for surgery; the doctors were going to remove all of his large intestine due to perforations. They told him they were going to wait for a day until the inflammation went down and then they were going to operate. I went to the hospital on Friday and gave him Reiki and the 1st attunement so that he could heal himself. The doctors saw improvement on Saturday and he asked for one more day. They allowed it and on Sunday there was so much improvement that he was released from the hospital on Monday.  Jeannine Tock

Reiki Heals IPF
I am a nurse and had been diagnosed by three of Davis' specialists, and all three gave me the diagnosis of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis which is considered be incurable. Recently I received Reiki treatments at a Reiki Sound Healing conference and felt somewhat better, but thought nothing more about it.

I had to have a lymph node removed and went to Ukaih to have this done as I knew this was a good hospital and I’d get proper care as they are associated with Loma Linda in Southern California. The attending doctor, who I had worked with in OR, decided to do a head, neck and chest CT and told me to take the DVD of the CT and give it to my Davis doctors, but said nothing else.

I took the DVD to my Davis doctor for my post-op check. He popped it into his computer, and asked me who the chest scan was from. I told him it was mine. He wanted to argue with me about having picked up the wrong DVD because THERE WERE NO LESIONS on my lungs at all. (You cannot have IPF without lesions and according to medical knowledge; a patient cannot heal from IPF.) It now appears that Reiki healed me of an incurable illness. I am so thankful. Debbie

Reiki and Eye Problem
For the past five years I have had the pleasure of being able to baby-sit my two grandchildren while their mother worked. I began when they were six weeks old, and they are now 5 and two. During the hours I was with them I used Reiki on them whenever they had a health issue or just to give them good energy. My five year old grandson had an eye problem since birth as his eye constantly teared up with water. The doctor said if it did not stop they would have to do surgery. Each day I performed Reiki on his eye, and it did stop. I cannot say that the Reiki 'cured' his problem, but he never had to have surgery. I am relieved about that. When they were babies if they were crying or upset, I would also do Reiki for them, and it soothed them. It was quite amazing how my grandson would just lie there and enjoy the Reiki energy. He would be very still and peaceful. I am constantly amazed at how Reiki also helps my husband who will ask me to do Reiki on aches and pains he has and how afterwards he says the pain is gone. He does not usually go for this kind of 'New Age stuff' but he is a believer that Reiki does work. Mary Kanz

Reiki and Dental Pain
About a month ago I had a two-tooth bridge that came loose from its glue. I went to my dentist who temporarily glued it back in place. Then today, 3-22-07, I went back for a more complete repair.

One of my major molars which held the bridge in place was beginning to degrade and if left unattended would have required pulling as it was hidden by the bridge/crown on top. So today the dentist went through the routine of drilling out the bad, rebuilding with new space age dental stuff, then fitting a new temporary bridge and I go back again April 17th for the fitting of the new bridge.

Usually he has to use Novocain on me, but today I got a wild thought and told him to just go ahead and drill. So he did and I didn't have time or room to go through the Gassho, then Reiji- ho and Chiryo before he started drilling so I quickly asked the spirit guides, archangels etc to be with me, to help me set my ego aside, and help Edward William Kehrig with the pain.

Several times I found myself so relaxed that I was almost in an alpha state, but because of the drilling, chipping, and the dentist (I've been going to him for 29 years now) kept asking me if I wanted anything for pain, am I okay; I never made alpha. But I was so relaxed that when I'd answered him I'd find myself talking very slow as if coming out of a sleep state. I was in that chair for an hour and a half with him working on me. Never once did I feel any pain. The dentist was getting quite concerned because he told me afterwards that I should have needed something for the pain because he was so deep into the tooth and he was getting worried about me jumping up, flinching or making some movement because of the pain and that that movement might damage what he was trying to do.

I explained to him about Reiki. He'd not heard about Reiki specifically, but knew such things existed. As for myself, I did not feel energy entering into me; I just placed my hands in a sort of "V" over my lower abdomen because that was the only place I could reach with the dentist working on me. I figured that the Reiki energy will seek the places it needs to go no matter where I put my hands. So I did the CKR symbol on my palms and within my mind I just kept chanting Reiki - Reiki - Reiki. By the time the dentist was finished and I was able to move again, I felt energized and invigorated.

I should say here that I've only had my Reiki I attunement since February 24th and my Reiki II attunement since February 25th. Edward Kehrig
