A Doctor Turns to Reiki
by Terry Sanders, M.D.

This is an excerpt from an article in the Fall 2006 back issue of the Reiki News Magazine.

Life was good. Dorothy, a 63-year-old RN, and I, a 72-year-old medical doctor, loved retirement and the life we led. Although I had a crippled leg as a result of childhood polio, we were strong, active, and tireless. We roamed the hills of the Ouachita National Forest by foot or on horseback in the daytime and played music with friends three or four nights a week.

It was not to last. Dorothy developed rheumatoid arthritis in both hands, began to have pain in her knee, which hampered both walking and riding, and rapidly began to lose strength and endurance. By the fall of 1996 she had trouble getting up from a chair, frequently dropped cups, and was considering getting a walker. She became very depressed.

She began going to a health food store owned by Carol Hetzel of Mena, Arkansas. She felt that she received some relief from herbs and an ointment she obtained there. One day in December she returned from a visit to the store with the announcement that she had had a “Reiki treatment” and that it had helped a great deal.

“Reiki” was a new word to me. Dorothy was intentionally vague in her description of it, for she knew that I was completely convinced that any form of treatment that didn't come from conventional medicine was a scam. However, she had come home smiling for the first time in months. I DID consider it a scam and attributed any improvement to the placebo effect, but that didn't bother me; if she felt better I didn't mind her spending money on a scam.

Carol had just received her Reiki II. As I learned later, she already had training in reflexology, iridology, and various other alternative methods. After her first Reiki treatment, Dorothy told Carol that she wanted to be in the first class when Carol became qualified to teach.

One thing Carol told Dorothy bothered me. She told her that her knuckles, which were at least twice normal size, would lose a lot of their swelling. I had treated many people with rheumatoid arthritis and had referred some to specialists. None had received lasting improvement. Dorothy had already tried a long list of anti-arthritic drugs. I warned her to not get her hopes up, for I didn't want her to be disappointed when she failed to improve.

To my amazement, Dorothy did improve. Within a few days her pain was gone, and, as time went by, the swelling began to leave her knuckles. (Today, 10 years later, her fingers are crooked and some don't bend properly, but the swelling is completely gone, and she seldom has pain.) She also began to regain her energy and strength. The depression lifted, and she began walking again.

I couldn't understand it. Nothing in my 50 years of medicine had prepared me for this. I was positive that the Reiki had nothing to do with it. How could it? Among other things, Carol had told Dorothy to get on a diet of fish, chicken, vegetables, nuts, and fruit. I rationalized that the diet was responsible for the improvement. No matter what had caused the improvement, I was grateful because Dorothy always returned from her Reiki treatments smiling and enthusiastic. “What a pity,” I thought, “that she is excited about a scam.”

In December of 1996, Dorothy received her Reiki I and II from Carol. Since I was such a non-believer, we had more or less adhered to a, “don't ask; don't tell” policy, and I knew absolutely nothing about Reiki. Although Dorothy's health had improved in many ways, it never crossed my mind that Reiki was responsible.

Dorothy was so excited about being “a traditional Reiki II”— whatever that meant— that I felt I should humor her, so I said, “Show me what you have learned.” I felt very noble to waste my time with such foolishness.

She had already purchased a Reiki table. I lay down on it expecting to feel absolutely nothing. She turned on some (to me) weird music, and told me to keep my eyes closed. To my amazement my legs began to tingle, although she hadn't touched me. Soon I began to feel as though my body was flattening until it was only an inch thick. Then, I felt as though she was throwing dry water on my chest — it didn't feel wet, but it seemed to hit in one place and then splatter, as would water.

When she told me to open my eyes, my first question was, “What kind of electrical gadget were you using on me?” When she told me that the things I had felt were due to Reiki and that she had not touched me at all, I realized that there was something to Reiki. But what? How could it possibly work? I tried to understand it and make it fit into my medical training template, but I couldn't make heads or tails of it.

A couple of months later, Dorothy received her Masters training, and a few weeks after that she passed Reiki I and II to me. I didn't feel anything more than a little tingling when I received the attunements. I had no plans to ever use the Reiki. Two years passed and I did nothing with my Reiki. I still felt there was some value to Reiki, but I didn't know what it was and wasn't really interested. When Dorothy came home with some tale of Reiki helping some illness, which I, as a doctor, knew that I couldn't help, I was still skeptical.

Dorothy's younger brother Jim was as open to all things as Dorothy was. He was

a trim, broad-shouldered man in his early sixties, who appeared to be the picture of health, but, because of war and horse injuries, was on 100% disability. His back was so stiff and caused so much pain that it was difficult for him to bend far enough forward to be able to see in the mirror when shaving.

On April 26, 1998, Jim came up from Texas, and Dorothy gave him his Reiki I. She also treated his back several times, and he was pain free when he returned home. This impressed me, as I had watched him suffer for years.

Although I was basically a very healthy man, I had had occasional bouts of PAT (Paroxysmal Auricular Tachycardia) for 30 years. It had not been much of a problem, but it became increasingly frequent and began to occur every time I hiked in the hills. At Dorothy's insistence, I went to a cardiologist, who told me what I already knew, gave me a prescription, and said, “Take this when you have an attack — but you'll live just as long if you don't take it as you will if you do.”

If I took the medicine I developed diarrhea, so I took an occasional dose, but mostly left it on the shelf. One morning I was walking alone when my heart became so irregular that I had to stop to rest several times before I could make it back to the house. Dorothy, who had spent many years as an ICU nurse, listened to my heart and was alarmed by the pattern; she insisted that I take some Reiki.

I lay on the table, and soon I was aware that the pattern had reverted to normal.

I didn't feel or see anything unusual. When Dorothy finished, she said, “I think I cured you.”

My mind flashed back to what I had been taught in medical school, “Nobody cures Paroxysmal Auricular Tachycardia, Dorothy. I'll have it as long as I live.”

“Mentally I saw your heart." Dorothy replied. “It had a blackened area on it. I mentally removed all the black, and I have a distinct feeling that you are cured of your PAT.” I was dumbfounded. That was the first I had heard of that kind of thing, and I couldn't believe that Reiki could have any long term effect on PAT when millions of dollars had been spent on it without a cure having been found. Dorothy was beginning to believe some very weird things!

I had been having attacks almost every time I walked and I resolved to keep track. To my utter amazement, it was months before I had another attack. It was very mild; Dorothy treated me for a few minutes and I have never had another.

I began to believe that Reiki must be a good thing. For the first time, I started reading and talking about it. And Dorothy and I began to give each other Reiki almost daily.

This is just part of the wonderful article by Dr. Sanders. To read the rest of the story and learn about the other amazing healings Reiki created for the Sanders, please order the Fall 2006 back issue.

Dowsing the Aura
by Penelope Quest

This is an excerpt from Detecting, Sensing and Seeing the Aura and Chakras that appears in the Winter 2002 back issue of the Reiki News Magazine.

Regular coat hangers can
be used as dowsing rods

Holding the rods comfortably and loosely at mid-chest height, stand some distance away from the person whose aura you want to detect. Seven to ten metres (twenty to thirty feet) away would be good, but it will still work in a more restricted space, although you may not find the outer layer. Then tune in to the person's unique energy vibrations by saying aloud or silently "I am looking for this person's aura" (insert the name of the person). Providing you are far enough away from the person, as you walk very slowly and evenly towards them, when the rods react by crossing or opening out (or whatever reaction is normal for you) you will have found the outer edge of their aura. If you are already within that person's aura when you start, the rods may begin to move immediately. You can stop when the rods react. Then slowly walk forward again until you reach the next area where the rods change their reaction. It is not necessary to continually reaffirm that you are looking for the person's aura-saying it once at the beginning is enough. And so on, until you get very close to the person. But do stop before the dowsing rods crash into the person! Remember the innermost layer(s) may be only a few centimetres from the body, so you may only be able to detect five or six of the seven layers.

For the majority of people, the layers of their auras seem to be alternately positive and negative energy-not meaning good or bad, but simply indicating a different set of vibrations, similar to positive and negative polarities in magnetism. However, some people's auric layers are all the same-all positive, or all negative-and others have the first three layers positive, and the next four negative, and so on. Occasionally I find that a person has a few particularly active layers in their aura which don't register as positive or negative, but which when detected with dowsing rods cause the rods to circulate like helicopter blades, as I have mentioned above. Technically these layers might be neutral energy, but I prefer to call them "curly"! However, each person is individual, so there is no right or wrong in this-just as there is no right or wrong about having dark hair instead of blonde. That's just the way it is!

What you may find interesting is to try detecting someone's aura before a Reiki attunement, and then again afterwards, and compare the results. I sometimes have my students do this. To their amazement, they find that their auras have expanded to two or three times the size they were before the attunement. You need a very large space to check this out and usually will have to go outside to get enough space! It also works if you try it before and after a Reiki treatment, although the expansion isn't usually quite so great. Another fun thing to try is detecting the auras around plants. One of my students was quite freaked out when detecting the aura of a large houseplant when he felt himself being pushed back by the plant's aura-which I guess indicated that the plant didn't particularly like its energy field being interfered with in that way! Plants are living beings, so if you try this, remember to ask permission first (even if you feel silly doing so); if you sense any discomfort, or even get a "no" in your head, then choose another plant.

A Horse Brought Reiki to My Life
by Anne-Kristina Wij

Reiki came to my life in a very strange way. Actually, a horse brought it to me. On a cold winter day in 1995 I realized that something was wrong. I had a strange feeling in my body. I also could feel that I didn’t have the strength to do as much work outside as usual. Usually every day I trained, groomed, and took care of my four horses from early morning until late evening. I didn’t want to see a doctor, as I didn’t have much confidence in doctors. On some days the strange sensations in my body were gone and my strength was back. I had been so sure that my old strength was back, but then I just collapsed of exhaustion. Now I knew the illness was back. I still refused to go to the doctor until the situation got much worse. Within days I was retaining so much water in my body that I couldn’t walk. I had suddenly become very swollen from water retention, and my legs didn’t obey me, either. My whole body was in pain, and I had trouble breathing.

Then I went to the doctor. The doctor sent me to the hospital where they medicated me heavily. I had an autoimmune disease, which means that my own body produces antibodies against my own organs like they were transplanted. The antibodies were attacking my thyroid gland and my adrenal glands. Adrenal glands produce Cortisol, and without Cortisol in your blood you die within thirty-six hours. When they got me stabilized I could go home. I had to take meds, which gave me a lot of side effects. This condition has no cure, and the meds make your life a living hell. I couldn’t work, sleep, or eat. This condition and the meds destroyed my life.

I had heard about Reiki three years before, when I still was living back home in Denmark. Here in Belgium nobody knew anything about Reiki. Then while I was so ill an Internet friend from New York sent me distance Reiki. It was like heavenly love and tranquility filled me from above. After this I was well for days. Then suddenly I received a fax from Slovenia from a friend of a friend. The fax said: find a Reiki and Karuna Reiki Master in Belgium who can help you. I began my search for Reiki, but I couldn’t find any Reiki people in Belgium at all.

Several months after, I suddenly noticed there was a loose horse galloping on the road. I didn’t know whose horse it was. Suddenly the horse stopped at my front door instead of galloping further down the road. He really stopped like somebody had pulled the hand brake! I went out and caught the horse and put him in my paddock. A minute later, a man came running. This man told me that he was a neighbor to the big farm in Wépion where the horse came from. He had seen him jump the fence and head to the main road. The man had followed the horse and had tried to catch him. The horse had galloped at least three to four kilometers and passed several fields with other horses. At one point the horse had been in between cars in traffic, but nobody could catch him. He had taken several left and right turns like he knew where he was going. I found it odd that he suddenly stopped at my door and that he let me catch him. I remember thinking that this was very strange behavior for a horse. The horse wasn’t spooked at all. He just had been very determined to reach me for some reason.

I understood everything when I found out that they regularly taught Reiki at the farm where the horse was from. Wow!!!! I have always said that animals are more close to the source than we are. And this horse really came to tell me that my long search for a Reiki teacher was over and that I could learn Reiki on his owner’s farm. I joined the Reiki I class right away. Then six months after, I followed the Reiki II training. Then my life began to change. I also felt much better physically and could lower the meds. I healed my issues one after another with distant Reiki. I also did the same for one life lesson after another as they presented themselves to me. I practiced Reiki for hours every day.

Then one day I registered for William Lee Rand’s Reiki Master class in Glastonbury. This course really was one of the highlights of my life. I received my Master attunement inside the stone ring of Stonehenge. During the attunement both sun and moon came up at the same time. Also many of us had sensed and seen the angels holding the space during the attunement. After the course I had a constant feeling like somebody was sending Reiki to me. I really felt like I was high on Reiki for months. A year after, I took William’s Karuna Reiki class. This class was also a wonderful experience! Karuna felt different than Usui Reiki, but I could feel it opening my heart more and more for unconditional love. This was exactly what I needed. Today I have been free of cortisone meds for two years. — Belgium

Using Reiki to See Auras and Past Lives
by William Lee Rand

I’ve been using gyoshi ho to see auras and past lives and have also been showing my students how to do this. The technique of gyoshi ho is described in another article titled, The Look of Love.

To use gyoshi ho to see auras or past lives, follow these steps:

1. Sit with a partner about 6-10 feet apart.

2. Have your partner close their eyes and relax with their hands palms up on their legs.

3. Place Reiki symbols on your hands if you have them and place your hands on your legs and begin giving yourself Reiki.

4. After a few minutes, begin staring at your partner with a soft gaze and relaxed eyes.

5. Think of your eyes and think of Reiki and intend that Reiki flow to your partner through your eyes.

6. As you do this, you’ll likely go into a light trance state. Allow this to happen.

7. As you continue to stare, you will likely begin to see changes happen around your partners face. It may begin to appear that a fog or mist is forming around the face or that a darkening is taking place which could build till you can’t see the face at all. When this happens, don’t allow it to startle you, but just continue to stare.

8. As you continue, the fog or dark mist will clear and you’ll likely see your partner with a different appearance. This is likely how they looked in a past life.

9. You may also begin to see a white mist around the head or you could begin to see colors. This is the aura.

10. You many also see the image of another person or a light being next to your partner. This could also be how they appeared in a past life or it could be one of their spirit guides.

This really works and many get positive results the first time they try, but practice is needed to develop skill. This is a very healthy technique as both people will receive a healing. I highly recommend you try it.

This technique is featured in a new DVD I’ve produced as part of a project called The Reiki Touch with a company called Sounds True. The kit contains a workbook, DVD, 2 CDs containing guided meditations and music to do Reiki to, and a deck of Reiki cards.

Multiple Sclerosis, My Healing Journey
by Diana M. Amadeo

This is an article from the Fall 2005 back issue of the Reiki News Magazine.

Even a thought, even a possibility, can shatter us and transform us.
—Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche (1844–1900)

I began my journey into hands-on healing as a recipient. After attending an astounding faith-healing service that noticeably improved mobility and cognitive impairments brought about by multiple sclerosis (MS), my faith in the possibility of healing was quickened. Following that prayer service, I used Reiki sessions for several years as a “booster shot” towards healthy recovery. Several of the practitioners who worked on me knew of my dozen years of physical struggle with MS and the consistent turnabout. They cheered me on and delighted in my progress. I became their “demo girl” for those likewise afflicted.

After several years of prayer and Reiki therapy, the time finally felt right to pursue healing studies on my own. I took classes with two different Usui Masters at our local holistic clinic. Soon, family members and dear homebound friends became my clients. I was kept busy doing visits with my colorful chakra stool and angel bag complete with music, CD player, hand cleanser, tissues, and journal. In a short period of time, the clinic where I had studied asked me to join them to serve two religious communities in our area. I had found my niche as a Reiki RN.

Initially, I had no desire to progress beyond Level II practitioner. However, after working side-by-side with the Masters, an overwhelming vocation presented itself. When you receive the calling to be a Master, there is absolutely no one or no circumstance that can keep you from that goal. And when others ask you to teach them the fundamentals of hands-on healing, the natural progression to Reiki Master Teacher evolves. I am now a devoted student, a humble master, and a teacher of healing peace.

For me, Reiki is a gentle, loving spiritual experience. It is a humble expression of gratitude to the Divine and creation for life, joy, and serenity. It is a “giving back” gesture that is of tremendous benefit to both giver and receiver. Reiki serves to restore the healthy tranquil balance of body, mind, and spirit that is our birthright. Hands-on healing restores or intensifies our connection with the Source.

God has always been an important part of my life. Spirit understood my suffering and pain during illness and consoled me with beautiful enriching meditations. When the time was right, the Divine supported my desire to be whole, again. But that recovery was to be in God’s time, when it was seen that I was truly ready. When the lessons were learned and the compassion to radiate love to mankind was kindled, I would be whole, again. And so it is.

The Divine showed me the conditions and circumstances that contributed to the onset of my disease. And the Author of Life also showed me the necessity of my impairment to accelerate this life’s spiritual progress. The Creator revealed to me how my journey has served as inspiration and hope to those with disease and long suffering. And it became apparent how necessary my hands are now to continue the work of the Divine in this world.

One of my greatest moments as a Reiki practitioner came not during a session but afterwards. I was leaving a convent after serving a good friend, when a resident approached me on a familiar green mobility chair. I had never seen this woman before, a person with ALS, but something pulled at me. I was mesmerized by her words, her struggle, her actions. But was it the woman, or something very simple that captivated me? And then I saw it—the familiar scuff, the ding. The light damage inflicted upon the scooter while I was at the soccer field watching my daughter’s game.

“Oh, my God,” I gushed suddenly. “That’s my scooter.” I had donated the well-worn mobility device along with Lofstrand crutches to the religious rehab center several years before. The donation had come after much prayer and reflection. I had given the means of mobility away when the trust came within that such means of assistance would not be needed in the foreseeable future. With the donation came the ultimate acceptance of my ongoing healing.

In the years that followed the donation, I had become very busy. Being handicapped was a distant memory. The scooter’s existence was forgotten. Immobility, spastic pain, visual disturbances, hearing loss, frustration, and fatigue had been replaced with love, peace, joy, and serenity. I had forgotten how severely affected I had been by MS until that very moment, when I recognized my chair. I had taken for granted the tremendous, awesome recovery.

The lady on my old green scooter stared at me for a moment. She peered curiously into my grateful, tear-filled eyes. Then she listened to my story. “Always stay open to the possibility of healing,” I said quietly. She nodded and scooted away.

Reiki Tables

We looked all over to find a set of Reiki/Massage tables that would best serve the needs and values of the Reiki community. I am happy to say that not only is the Earthlite series by far the finest and highest quality Reiki/Massage tables available today, but they are also manufactured with care and respect for the environment. Because of this, they are considered to be the world's #1 brand in Reiki/Massage tables and accessories! All tables are rated for professional use and come with a full warranty - starting with the Inner Strength line Element table at $199.00! Click below for complete details. Save Money - Our prices are lower than Earthlite's prices!
