Reiki and the Adventure of My Life

My doctors told me that by the time I was forty, I would be totally paralyzed and in a wheelchair. I had an inherited spinal defect similar to spinal bifida in which my spinal cord had become exposed and was being pinched to the point that major nerves were being compressed. The doctors said the damage was too great to repair. I had problems standing, walking, sitting, and getting out of bed. I had lost feeling in my left side, including my arm, and had started dragging my left leg. This affected my emotions too, and the thought of having to be taken care of for the rest of my life left me feeling suicidal.
Soon after receiving this devastating revelation from my doctors, I encountered Reiki when a friend of a friend hugged me during a chance meeting in a bookstore. I could feel her hands on me hours later, especially on my back where I had the spinal problem. Because of this experience, I decided to take a Reiki course, as I felt it might help my condition. After the course I started giving myself treatments and experienced a return to harmony on all levels. I felt I had touched my soul, and I found a deep peace.
For years prior to my discovery of Reiki, I had had the feeling that a dark cloud hung over my head and that I was jinxed in some way. Now the cloud had disappeared, and it was as if I had awakened from a long sleep. One of the most amazing realizations for me during this time was that, because of the peacefulness I felt, it did not matter if I would be in a wheel chair. I had surrendered all demand and that was when my physical symptoms began to disappear. I continued my work as a financial advisor and did Reiki in the evenings. I lived in two worlds; one I considered “normal” dressed in corporate drag, and the other, well it was Reiki, and I slipped into something more comfortable. I did not mix the two. It was like having my feet in two different boats, and I had to maintain balance to keep afloat. I decided to become a Reiki Master because I wanted to be able to teach others, so that they could experience the peace and fulfillment that I knew Reiki could bring. I completed Master level training in July, 1988 and taught my first Reiki I class in October, 1988.
I had been using regression work with my Reiki practice and in 1989 decided to travel to Somerset, England to study regression techniques. A few days before my departure I went to visit a friend at her office. A woman sitting in the waiting room looked at me and said, “Soon you will go on a long journey. You will cross the big ocean and will not return to the United States for a long time. Take everything you need, especially warm clothes. You are going to wake the sleeping people of many churches.” I remember thinking the woman was very strange and that I had absolutely no intention of working in a church. Besides it was my plan to return in three months or less.
Despite my "plan," I had been in England only two months when I made the decision to stay and to put both of my feet in one boat. “The Reiki Boat” was now my vehicle of choice. My family was shocked because I had always felt that I had to have a steady paid job, and here I was leaving everything and following my heart. They did not understand me and were worried about what was going to happen, while I on the other hand, was happy responding to spirit.
I was one of the first Usui Reiki Masters in the UK, and I was invited by many people to travel and facilitate courses all over Britain. After working in England for some time I was asked to come and work in Scotland with a group of doctors who were interested in the influence of Reiki by clinical application for depression and motor-neurogical defects. It was an exciting time with a tremendous amount of work and research going on, but I was still missing something. One morning I was compelled to pray. I got down on my knees and asked to be told where to go to be of greater service to mankind. In less than ten minutes I had received a telephone call and was told to go to Czechoslovakia. I remember looking up to the ceiling and saying “ Gosh God, that was fast!”
I followed my heart and arrived in Prague on February 3, 1991, after spending Christmas and my 44 th birthday with my spiritual family in the Netherlands. The weather was much colder than I had ever experienced. On my first day in Prague the temperature was at an all-time low of –38 Celsius (-36.4 Fahrenheit). Even the Voltiva River was frozen. Fortunately for me, a friend in Holland had given me an old coat and a pair of winter boots.
As a way to live, I started teaching English in a local hospital and at the high school in Kolín, 50-kilometers to the east from Prague. I planned to stay only three months. When I arrived, the people were newly free from communism and had no idea about basic ways to support themselves in a healthy life style. They had never been able to experience energy medicine or many other things that I had taken for granted. I had 50 dollars to my name, two suitcases, and my willingness to make a difference in whatever way I could. I was housed in student housing for medical personnel. There were 17 of us on one floor sharing one toilet and one tub. My one-room accommodation contained a few old cabinets, a single bed, and a broken refrigerator. I was told to put my food on the windowsill, where it promptly froze. Everything I thought I had needed to feel safe and comfortable had been left behind. I remember thinking this is all about faith and trust.
I tell people that God had a great sense of humor about my stay in Czech. He surely knew that I would have said after a few weeks, “Look I tried, it isn’t working, and I will leave now,” but I couldn’t leave because I did not have enough money to go anywhere, much less out of the country. I had to make it. I surrendered my fear and placed my trust in God. Some Ethiopian doctors on my floor saw to it that I had food for the first two months because it took that long for me to be paid my 30 dollars a month salary. After some time, my English students, who were also the heads of the various departments in the hospital, asked me what I really did when I wasn't teaching English, and I told them about Reiki. They asked me to work with several of their patients so that they could monitor the effects of Reiki. I started treating with Reiki in a ward of 50 patients who were suffering from staff infection and septicemia and were not expected to live. If Reiki did not work it would be okay, and if it did work, well the patient would be considered lucky. They were quite surprised when patients started getting well. . . . . .

Does Reiki Always Flow To Where It Is Needed?

In some Reiki groups and circles the idea that Reiki will flow to where it is needed is commonly taught. It’s said that no matter where you place your hands, Reiki will flow anywhere in the body to do its work. Some have thought that if this is true then why do we teach the use of different hand positions. Simply placing your hands over the ears as an example will allow a complete treatment as Reiki will flow from this position and treat the whole person.
This idea is based on a misunderstanding. While Reiki does sometimes flow from where the hands are placed to other areas in need, this doesn’t always happen. The reason this does sometimes happen is because in some instances, there is a special energetic connection between an area in need of Reiki and another area of the body or the aura. When this condition is present, Reiki will flow in this way. But this isn’t always the case.
This misunderstanding likely came from the fact that the best place to treat a condition isn’t always over the area where the symptoms are present. When this is the case, Reiki will flow from one area of the body to treat another. This idea was presented to me by my first Reiki teacher, Bethel Phaigh in 1981. When treating a specific condition, she told us to first place the hands over the area where the symptoms exist and treat in this way, but if Reiki doesn’t flow well and the client also reports that he or she doesn’t feel much relief, then use your intuition to guide you to another place on the body and treat there. Often, this will seem like a completely illogical area to place the hands, but if it’s right, when you place your hands there, Reiki will begin flowing strongly and travel from where your hands are placed directly to the area in need and the client will report relief.
I had my first experience of this when treating a woman with a hip problem. First I placed my hands on the outer sides of her hips, but didn’t feel much Reiki flowing and she also reported that it wasn’t helping. Then, using my intuition, I was guided to treat the knees. Immediately, Reiki began flowing strongly and she reported Reiki flowing from her knees, directly to her hips. Soon she reported the pain was gone and when she tried walking, her hips felt much better.
This experience validates both the standard system of hand placements that treats the whole body, as well as the Japanese Reiki Techniques of Byosen scanning and Reiji ho. By treating the whole body, you automatically treat those areas where Reiki can easily access the energy system and will flow to whereit is needed. And by using Byosen scanning, and/or Reiji ho you’ll be guided to those specific areas where an energetic opening exists.
Therefore, it can be seen that Reiki doesn’t necessary flow to where it is needed from any location on the body. Because of this, it’s important to either do a complete treatment using all the hand positions, and/or allow yourself to be guided to the most needy and receptive areas if you want to provide the best healing experience for your client.

Reiki Helps Car Accident Injury and Stroke
One day after my yoga class I witnessed a car accident where an older gentleman was thrown out of his jeep right on the cement sidewalk. He laid there without any signs of life, with a severely bleeding head injury. Without any thoughts or hesitation I parked me car and walked toward him. I started to give him Reiki, and gently moved his body to a safer place. I remember talking to him and sending a lots of Reiki energy to him, he gently opened his eyes and he smiled and thanked me. When the ambulance came I said good-bye to him and one man followed me. I turned around and he said that he witnessed angels around me and the injured man and asked me if I was a nurse. I should clarify also that before this occurrence I had tremendous fear of blood. Reiki just melted my fear completely away.
Well, a couple of months later I flew to Prague, Czech republic to visit my father. He was then 89 years old and lonely, since my mother passed away a couple of years before. One evening I went out with my girlfriend to very a beautiful art show and shortly after the show went home to be with my dad. I found my father under the table unconscious in a large pool of blood. Without any hesitation I started to flow Reiki to him and stayed very calm. I moved my dad to more a comfortable place and I was talking to him. My father opened his eyes, and with a gentle expression and confidence on his face he told that he knows he will be all right. At this point I called the ambulance. The results from MRI were pretty grim, major brain damage from the stroke. To make the story short, my father's mind recovered as I often joked with him that his memory was better than mine and he lived to be 91. I am so grateful to Reiki for all the love, courage, creativity, opening of my heart and joy that it brought into my life. Dascha Friedl
Practitionner Healed While Giving Treatment
I was on my way home to meet with a woman that was coming to me for her second Reiki session. A half-hour before she came I fell outside in the most stupid way and hurt my elbow badly. My mother was visiting me and is a doctor. She looked at the wound and said that I had to reschedule my client and go to the hospital immediately because the hole was all the way to the bone in a way that it could not close by itself. Even though I could hardly move my hand, something inside me told me that I should keep my appointment in spite of my mother’s advice. The minute my client layed down I could feel a tingling in my arm and without it even hurting me a bit I went on. After twenty minutes I started to feel a very strange and strong tingling in my hand that seemed to be moving towards my elbow from many directions inside myself then a very strong feeling that my hand was white, very white. This went on for 10 minutes and then it was gone. The client felt as good as ‘ten horses’ (in her own words) and went happily home after we had a long talk. After she left I took the big bandage from my elbow and lo! there was nothing wrong with it. It actually looked like it would after two months later of healing! My mother and husband didn’t have one word and I, even today, have a hard time grasping it. I thank the divine and send love to you. Embla Dís
Back Healed
Hi, my name is Ashley and I live in Townsville , Australia . I have been a Reiki practitioner for 2 years. Prior to that I was a police officer with back pain. My condition was such that my pelvis tilted and rotated backward, which in turn caused my spine to curve. This also caused neck pain and discomfort. I was attending chiropractic re-alignment 2-3 times per month. Six months after receiving Reiki and completing my first degree I have not been to a chiropractor since. I have since completed my second degree and look to commence my masters within the next few months. The level of energy, comfort and general clarity I attribute largely to Reiki within my everyday life. Ash
Reiki Helped My Friend Die
I just completed Reiki I as my best friend was dying from cancer. We stayed at her bedside for three days and nights. On the last night her husband was too tired to stay awake so he laid on the floor by her bed. I told him I would watch her and tell him if anything changed. She was in such pain and agony! As I sat next to her my hands began to get hot. I hadn’t been taught to use Reiki on someone who was dying but still I felt the need to use it. But how? I instinctively held her heart chakra for about 10 - 15 minutes then waited for 45 min. I did this throughout the night. After receiving Reiki she relaxed and seemed to move through the process easier. She finally made the transition at 6:30 the next morning. I felt that I had done the right thing but I still needed confirmation. The next day a friend of my daughters gave her a book to share with me. She heard I had just taken a Reiki class and she had one laying around. It was Baginski and Sharamon's Reiki, Univeral Life Energy. I took the book and it fell open to the chapter on "Reiki, help for the dying. It described holding a person's heart chakra to help the person leave this life in harmony and to open her up to what is to come. It was the reassurance I was looking for! I was thankful to have been given Reiki and its gifts at exactly the right time for me and my friend. Becky
Reiki and Surgery
I would like to share a recent Reiki healing story with you. My mother had surgery recently and she received her very first Reiki healing session prior to undergoing her operation. I asked her to just be open and accept the healing energy. She was so relaxed and felt the warmth of the healing energy within minutes of receiving Reiki. She said she felt extreme warmth over her abdominal area where she was to be operated. I was able to give her Reiki before she received any anesthesia.
After her surgical procedure was completed, she was so alert and she couldn't believe how clear her mind was after the surgery was over. My mother has had several surgeries in the past and never woke-up so alert and relaxed. She also required less anesthesia during her procedure which again proves that Reiki given before surgical procedures allows most people to receive less anesthesia which leads to a more alert patient. She shared her Reiki healing story with everyone from her pre-op nurse to her surgeon and was so grateful to have received the healing energy.
