Making Your Reiki Energy More Effective
by William Lee Rand

Since Reiki has tremendous potential to help others including the ability to improve the healing of serious illnesses, even those that are life threatening, and can help us in so many other wonderful ways, making its results more effective is a worthy goal and one that experience has shown is entirely possible.

In order to understand how we can improve the quality of our Reiki energy, a clear understanding of the meaning of the word Reiki can be helpful. The word Reiki is made up of two Japanese kanji. The kanji for Rei can have a variety of meanings but the highest and most esoteric has to do with spiritual consciousness. The kanji for ki also can have a variety of meanings, but the meaning that works best for this article is that ki is the energy of life. However, it is important to realize that life energy can express in many ways. As an example, the Japanese call healthy life energy genki and unhealthy life energy is called byoki. And in fact, it is recognized that there is a different kind of ki for every psychological and physiological state that is possible for a person to be in. It is the type of consciousness that is guiding ki that causes it to express differently. In the case of Reiki, life energy is being guided by spiritual consciousness. This is why Reiki is able to heal.

Based on my experience and that of other highly sensitive Reiki practitioners, I have found that it is possible to attract ever higher qualities of Reiki energy for use in Reiki sessions. In this process it has been observed that Rei or spiritual consciousness can increase in frequency and become more refined, thus guiding ki in more skillful ways. Ki can also increase in strength or quantity. If we are to improve the effectiveness of our Reiki energy, we need to either increase the amount of ki or increase the quality of rei. The greatest improvement seems to come when both rei and ki are increased or improved. However, since rei guides ki, experience has shown that rei is the more important of the two.

Rei or spiritual consciousness comes from a place that is beyond ego and exists in a realm of unlimited potential. Because of the superior nature of rei, it has the potential ability to summon an unlimited quantity of ki.

This understanding means that no matter how effective ones Reiki has become, it’s always possible for it to be more effective. In other words, there is no limit to the healing potential Reiki offers us. If we believe that Reiki comes from an unlimited source, then it is only logical that this is true.

When Reiki has a higher quality of rei, it is more intelligent, aware and skillful. This means that more difficult issues can be healed by Reiki energy or that the same issue can be healed more quickly. An analogy to this is that of a surgeon. When a physician first becomes a surgeon, he or she is usually able to perform simple operations such as the appendectomy, dermatological surgery or a tonsillectomy, but as skill is developed, ever more sophisticated operations become possible with brain surgery and organ transplants being possible at the higher skill levels. In the same way, it is possible to refine one’s ability to channel Reiki energy so that ever more skillful levels of Reiki energy become available to us. When this begins to happen, the Reiki energy is perceived to be more refined and of a subtler quality, while at the same time, it has a more powerful effect in which the client is taken into higher states of relaxation that are more deeply healing and beautiful to experience. These higher states might be appropriately called transcendental relaxation.

Keeping Your Reiki Strong

There are a number of techniques I’ve found that will improve the refinement and strength of our Reiki energy, thus increasing its effectiveness. But first I’d like to address an issue some students have mentioned because if this issue is present, it will prevent improvements from taking place. This has to do with the situation in which our Reiki energy seems to lose the strength it originally had. This situation can arise when the practitioner is giving many Reiki sessions to others and not taking the time to receive Reiki. My first Reiki teacher, Bethal Phaigh, said that Takata Sensei told her one must maintain a balance in the use of Reiki if one is to maintain its flow. This means that one must not only give sessions to others and do self-sessions, but most importantly, one must also receive hands-on Reiki sessions from others. This is necessary because when giving Reiki, often our own issues will be dislodged and come to the surface, but the Reiki energy that flows through us when giving sessions to others and even when doing self-sessions will not always be strong enough to complete the healing process and release the negative energy. These unresolved negative energies can sometimes slow and even block the flow of one's Reiki energy. The remedy for this is to lie passively on the Reiki table and receive a session from another practitioner. In this way the full healing power of Reiki can work on us, clearing out the issues that have jammed up in our system and opening the Reiki pathway, thus restoring its flow.

Improving the effectiveness of Reiki

One school of thought is that as you practice Reiki, it will get stronger. While it’s important to practice by giving sessions to yourself and others, I have found that practice by itself isn’t enough to improve the strength and quality of Reiki energy or if it does, it doesn’t seem to improve very much. I’ve been around Reiki people a long time and have had the opportunity to receive sessions from many different practitioners from both traditional and non-traditional lineages including those who have been practicing for years. I have noticed that it is often the case that those with years of practice have Reiki that is not noticeably stronger than those who have been practicing a much shorter time. Therefore if we are to improve the quality of our Reiki energy, techniques other than simply practicing Reiki must be employed.

Take the Next Level of Reiki Training

One way to increase the effectiveness of your Reiki energy is to take the next level of Reiki training. As an example, if you have Reiki I, take Reiki II or if you have II take Advanced Reiki Training or the ART/Master training; as long as you choose an experienced, competent teacher who you trust and feel good about, your Reiki energy is going to improve. If you’ve already taken all the levels including Karuna Reiki® Master, then I suggest that you review one or more of the classes. The increased training and the review will improve your understanding of Reiki, you’ll learn new healing skills or brush up on those you already know and the attunement will further refine and strengthen your Reiki energy.

Additional Attunements

Another thing that works is to get additional attunements. While Takata Sensei didn’t recommend this, it is something that is practiced by the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai, the Reiki organization started by Usui Sensei. Based on their experience and the instruction given to them by Usui Sensei it is important to get many attunements. The Gakkai have meetings two to three times a month at which attunements or reiju, as they call them, is given. Everyone is encouraged to attend these meetings and receive reiju as often as possible. It is their experience that as one receives more reijus, the strength and quality of one’s Reiki energy increases.(1)

To take advantage of this I suggest forming a group of Reiki Masters who meet regularly and share attunements among themselves. You can also give yourself attunements. Below is a method for doing this.

Strengthen Your Reiki Energy through Self-Attunements

If you are a Reiki Master, it’s possible to give yourself attunements. This will strengthen and refine your Reiki energy at the same time it raises your vibration and improves your health. I suggest using this technique to give yourself the Master attunement. Those who have chosen to do this once a day for a month or longer have had amazing results.

  1. Sit in a chair in the middle of the room.
  2. Prepare yourself using the usual method you use when giving attunements to others.
  3. Include a prayer indicating this will be a self-attunement and ask that it further refine and strengthen your Reiki energy.
  4. Then stand up, but as you do so, imagine you are leaving your astral body or an image of yourself seated in the chair.
  5. Proceed to move behind the chair and imagine you can see yourself sitting in the chair while giving yourself the first part of the attunement.
  6. Continue around to the front and give yourself this part of the attunement using the same method of visualizing and intending that you are still seated in the chair.
  7. Continue using this process with all the attunement steps including the final blessing and completion.
  8. After you are done, sit back into the chair imagining you are sitting back into your astral body.
  9. Meditate with your hands on your heart, focused on experiencing the new energy that is flowing through you.

Working with an Illumined Being

Another method of improving the strength and effectiveness of your Reiki energy is to develop a strong working relationship with a fully Illumined being. While it is true that there are Reiki guides who help us with our Reiki sessions and can guide us in other ways, they are not necessarily able to provide the highest quality help and guidance that is available. This is why I always recommend that Reiki practitioners develop a strong working relationship with a fully Illuminated being.

A fully Illuminated being is one who is beyond ego and is a pure source of guidance and energy that comes directly from the source—from God, or the Supreme Being, or the Universe or whatever name you have chosen to give it. When this is the case, these guides will have a tremendous love for you and also be extremely powerful and posses extraordinary skill. Their energy will be highly refined and they’ll be able to interact with you in ways that are exactly right for you, adjusting the energies they use as well as the skills and techniques so as to heal or help the issues and situations in need of healing in an efficient and effective way.

An Illumined being will always respect your free will and will always get permission from you before providing you with help. This could include healing or helping you upgrade the quality of your Reiki energy or teaching you new skills and providing other benefits. They will also support your current guides helping them to upgrade their skills and improve the quality of healing energy they provide as well. These Illumined guides are usually well known such as Jesus, Mother Mary, the Holy Spirit, and there is also Buddha, Krishna, Babaji, St. Germain, the bodhisattvas, the Archangels and so on. You may also choose to work with God directly. Often those with a religious background will choose to work with an illumined being associated with ones religion, although this isn't always the case.

You may already be in touch with one or more of these Illumined Beings, but if not, the following is a method of making contact and gaining their help.

Gaining the Help of an Illumined Being

  1. Say a prayer or affirmation asking to be guided to the Illumined Being that is right for you. Then do some reading about the Ascended Masters or the Illumined Beings including any of those mentioned above. Be aware of which you feel most attracted to. After doing this a while, choose one you’d like to work with. If you have strong religious beliefs, then the Illumined Being best for you most likely will be one associated with your religion, but not necessarily.
  2. Set a time to meditate at least once each day.
  3. At the beginning of your meditation, pray to the Illumined Being you have chosen to work with asking he or she to help you make contact and to strengthen your connection. Include your intention of gaining his or her help to improve the quality of your healing energy so that you will be able to provide greater help to others.
  4. Then using the Reiki distant symbol, begin sending Reiki to the Illumined Being. As you do so continue with your prayer or affirmation, asking that the Illumined Being work with you to strengthen your connection. Also again pray that the Illumined Being will strengthen your Reiki energy making it more effective so that you can provide greater help to others.
  5. Ask that this Illumined Being become your main guide. Give this Illumined Being permission to heal you and to make any changes in your energy field it deems appropriate for your healing.
  6. Ask the Illumined Being to support your current guides and to work with them to upgrade their skills and healing energies.
  7. Also, ask the Illumined Being to remove any unhealthy spirits or other forces or energies that are not part of God’s plan for your life.
  8. Note that one of the features of Illumined Beings is that they will always respect your free will and will never force anything on you but will always ask permission before making any changes in your energy field or providing healing.
  9. During the session you may be guided to place your hands on various parts of your body or be shown lessons or be provided with other healing experiences that will be beneficial to you.
  10. End the session with an expression of gratitude and with the request that the Illumined Being continue to provide help, guidance, protection and blessings.

Do this meditation once a day. Then throughout the day, from time to time, contemplate your life and your desire to be of greater service to others. You can also say additional prayers to your Illumined Being throughout the day.

This is a very powerful exercise that can be done on an ongoing basis for years or even the rest of your life. An Illumined Being has unlimited potential and can heal you and guide you to extraordinary levels of health and well-being and provide great benefit for your Reiki clients and students. It may also happen that the time will come when the Illumined Being becomes your only guide (along with God) and quickens your movement along your spiritual path, helping your life work much better than ever before. This process is more than worth the amount of time it will take to carry it out.

Life holds the possibility of extraordinary healing, growth and well-being for each of us. In order to realize this potential, it’s necessary to accept this possibility and make use of methods to facilitate the development of these qualities. My hope is that this article will provide you with the inspiration, motivation and methods to get started and that in time you will be guided to the achievement of your greatest potential.

Transforming Competition Into Cooperation
by Janis Alber Groppi

Not too long ago, I discovered that a local Reiki master had been using non-Reiki-like tactics to lure my clients and students away from my practice to hers. My initial reaction was anger, followed by hurt. Pretty soon fear and self-doubt had consumed me.

Fortunately, I remembered to give myself Reiki. Soon I began to calm down and to think more clearly about the situation. First, I realized that they weren’t “my” students. After all, I didn’t own them! As soon as the Reiki classes were finished, they became “former” students. They were free to study with whomever they chose, just as I had done. I also recalled that in fact, many students in my advanced classes had studied earlier levels of Reiki with other teachers.

As Reiki continued to bring my energy into alignment, I also remembered that in my early Reiki training, I was taught that the Law of Abundance eliminates the need for competition and that the Law of Attraction would draw to us whatever we focus our energy on —whether desired or not. Yes, and that the more we cooperate and direct our collective energies toward promoting Reiki, the more the Law of Attraction will help us to manifest abundance in our practices and in our lives. Through this process, I began to develop greater acceptance and respect for all Reiki practitioners and teachers.

Competition and the Law of Abundance

The Law of Abundance contends that there is more than enough in the universe for everyone to be fulfilled and happy. The more we give to the universe, the more we receive in return. So then, shouldn’t the Law of Abundance eliminate the fear of —and need for —competition?

One of the first lessons I learned in my Reiki training was that there is no place for competition in Reiki. The Law of Abundance tells us that until every single individual in the world is treated with or trained in Reiki, there are more than enough clients and students to go around. My energy would attract the clients and students who were energetically compatible with me. Moreover, they would be drawn to me because I offered something that they —and I —needed to grow and heal.

Furthermore, I learned that our collective mission as Reiki practitioners and masters is congruent. Our relationship with each other needs to be one of amity and cooperation in spreading the message of Reiki. Indeed many teachers encourage students to study with more than one instructor or system of Reiki if they are so guided. So why was I so hurt by “my” students doing this? After all, I have taken Reiki master training twice. Perhaps my first Reiki master teacher, whom I respect, love, and adore, felt hurt too if and when she found out that I had repeated my training with someone else. She need not have; it was because of her special teaching that I was guided to open up to Reiki and learn as much as I could.

Competition and the Law of Attraction

The Law of Attraction asserts that like attracts like. We attract whatever energy we put out into the universe. Therefore, when we embrace abundance, we attract abundance.

Likewise, I learned early in my Reiki training that the fear of competition would create negative energy and separateness. Reiki’s wisdom is all about unity and love and the free flow of energy for the highest good and highest healing of the universe, the planet, and each soul within. Negativity and separateness can actually discourage potential clients and students from pursuing Reiki at all. This of course reduces the benefits Reiki could provide to promote well-being and healing for everyone. The fear of competition actually attracts the competition that people fear. In fact, they create the underlying scarcity, which is what they truly fear —that the success of other Reiki practitioners will lessen their own.

However, neither life nor Reiki is a zero-sum game. We can all attract abundance into our lives. We don’t need to lie, cheat, compete, or steal to get it. We just need to ask for it. If we focus on what we want in a positive way, it will come to us. If we focus on the negative aspects, on scarcity, on our fears and self-doubts, that is what will manifest.

It is in this context that the results of the elimination of competition within the Reiki community become clear. We, as Reiki teachers and practitioners, are all free to recruit students into our classes and promote our practice to clients. When we do so from a place of competition and fear, we believe that someone will win and someone will lose. So that is what we attract. But when we approach it from a place of harmony and abundance, we create a different reality: inclusiveness, opportunity, and success, not just for ourselves but for others as well!

Competition and Cooperation

There is competition in the business world every day. Yet consider members of industry trade associations who accomplish a lot for their business communities. They take their competitive hats off for the betterment of the industry and they understand the positive results that accrue to their own companies as well. In fact, I was active in one such association many years ago. The securities industry came together to develop messaging standards to eliminate the costly and risky need for faxes, telephone calls, and manual data entry. We broke down the walls of competition and cooperated for the benefit of the entire industry. Only by working together could we achieve significant cost savings and risk reduction for each member firm as well as the industry as a whole. Not only did the group succeed in its original mission, it continues to thrive and bring positive influence to the securities industry today.(1)

In the Reiki community, we, too, can step outside our fears and unite for the higher healing that Reiki offers. If we each stay bottled up in our fears and self-doubts, we are obstructing the flow of abundance and hence the flow of Reiki. We are actually blocking Reiki from helping the world in general.

How many of us remark at how great the energy is when we are in a room with other Reiki practitioners? — that a group’s energy is so much more evident and powerful than that of a single individual? As Reiki practitioners, we’ve all experienced it. Likewise, as we release our fears and self-doubts and open up our energy to the collective possibilities that Reiki offers, the energy starts to flow. There are many examples of Reiki groups that have been able to do this. They support each other, come together for the benefit of others, and even refer students to each other based on their needs. The sum is greater than the individual parts. Their collective energy is greater than the total of each in isolation. Everyone wins. The individuals who participate in these groups do it in a loving way. They’ve put fear and self-doubt aside and have consequently thrived in their practices and their personal lives. Reiki has thrived along with them.

Laurelle Shanti Gaia serves as an inspiration to us all in this regard. Many years ago, another Reiki master felt threatened by her too, and took action to thwart Laurelle’s practice. With the help of her guides and Reiki friends, she not only engaged this Reiki master, but through this process, helped to create a Reiki community in Louisville, Kentucky. The group, United in Healing, was formed by the Reiki masters in the area who were previously competing with each other. Laurelle, along with her friend, Kathy Lipinski, invited all of them to a meeting and helped them to get to know each other. They discovered that once they got to know each other, their fear subsided, and it was much easier for them to begin working together. They focused on common goals and realized that together they could do so much more than by trying to act on their own. Because of this they were able to organize larger projects. They reached out to support groups for breast cancer, fibromyalgia, diabetes, and other diseases and conditions to give Reiki demonstrations and show how Reiki could be helpful to their groups. They also sponsored Reiki marathons for the critically and chronically ill. They even developed a free Reiki clinic cooperative. Their membership spread. As they continued their mutual support, each of their practices prospered as a result. One of their really successful undertakings was that each member shared his or her entire contact list with the whole group. When any one of them scheduled a class, everyone on their combined contact list was notified about it. Every member began doing better than they had before. In fact during a single weekend in 1998, their members had more than 100 students in their combined Reiki classes!(2)

A wonderful example of Reiki practitioners working together for the benefit of the community comes from the Reiki Room in Scotia, NY ( Sue Vazal and a team of Reiki masters volunteer for a day every year at each of the camping events held at the Double H Ranch for Camp Bravehearts, a support group for female cancer survivors. Working as a team, they have reduced campers’ physical symptoms by as much 70% and emotional symptoms by 75%!

Reiki shares are an excellent way to connect with other Reiki practitioners for mutual and community support. For example, our local Reiki share meets twice a month, once in the evening and once during the middle of the day to accommodate people with different life situations. People come from all levels of Reiki and a variety of lineages. In addition to the opportunity to practice giving and receiving Reiki, we offer a forum to ask and answer questions, to share our experiences, exchange support in so many areas, and to introduce Reiki to welcomed newcomers in a loving and nurturing environment. Everyone learns and everyone benefits. We have recently set a new goal to offer our collective Reiki services to a charity, and are currently taking the necessary steps together to bring that to fruition.

Not all such groups are local. I am very fortunate that my 2008 Karuna Reiki â class bonded and has stayed connected. We help each other through difficult times and celebrate our joy. We assist each other in developing our Reiki practices and classes, and support each other through our life choices and transitions. Through our weekly distant Reiki share, we’ve participated in the healing of our loved ones. The father of one member recovered quickly and completely from a major heart attack and subsequent surgery, which his doctors declared miraculous. Another member was able to grieve the loss of her sister and move forward in her life. Yet another member was able to forgive his mother and share a loving relationship with her before her passing. There are many such stories. Our work together during these three years has reaped so many benefits for us and for our friends and families; we could not have accomplished all of this individually. It takes a group.

I offer this challenge. Let’s all take off our competitive hats and bring together our collective experience and gifts of Reiki for the benefit of our communities, the world — and ourselves. If you find that it is difficult to let go of your fears and self-doubts with respect to other Reiki practitioners, you may use your gift of Reiki to help. Here are some ideas that may work for you:

  • Meditate and send Reiki to that place in you that can’t let go of your fears.
  • Ask your Reiki guides for help and support. Listen carefully for their guidance in ways you don’t expect.
  • Send Reiki to the people whom you consider “competitors.” Remember the Law of Attraction!
  • Join a Reiki share. Look in and Facebook. If you can’t find one, start one!
  • Reach out to other Reiki practitioners in your community. Try doing something together and see how it goes.

When we move away from a place of fear, self-doubt, and competition to one of harmony and cooperation, we will all attract abundance. Just imagine a world abundant in Reiki!

Center for Reiki Research
by William Lee Rand

A new web site has recently been launched that provides important resources for those interested in Reiki research. The site features a listing and summaries of all Reiki research studies published in peer-reviewed journals. The summaries have been produced using the Touchstone Process; a highly rigorous peer-reviewed method of analyzing all the studies in a particular field. Its application to Reiki research is noteworthy.

The Touchstone Process was developed by the CRR staff, a group of seven doctorally prepared researchers and five nurses and is unique to the field of Complementary and Alternative Medicine. The site also includes articles on research study design, how to write case reports, documenting Reiki sessions, insurance reimbursement for Reiki sessions and the scientific basis of Reiki. A consultation service is also offered for those wanting to conduct Reiki research. In addition, the site contains detailed descriptions of the Reiki programs offered in 64 hospitals across the US.

The site is free although it is necessary to register to use the information on the site.

Study Summary

Effects of Reiki on pain and selected affective and
personality variables of chronically ill patients

Dressin, L.J. and Singg, S. Effects of Reiki on pain and selected affective and personality variables of chronically ill patients. Subtle Energies and Energy Medicine, 9(1):53-82, 1998.

Purpose of Study
To compare the effects of Reiki, progressive muscle relaxation (PMR), false Reiki (placebo) and no therapy (control) on reduction of pain, emotional improvement, personality enhancement and spiritual growth in chronically ill patients.

The first goal was to compare pre and post-test measures of pain, depression, state anxiety, desirable changes in personality variables (trait anxiety, self-esteem, locus of control, and realistic sense of personal control), and stronger faith in God. The second goal was to investigate the interaction between type of treatment and gender. A third goal was to determine if any effects of Reiki were long lasting.

A randomized within-subject crossover study was designed to include One hundred and twenty subjects (48 men and 72 women) with an age range from 21 to 62 years. Twelve men and 18 women were randomly assigned to each of the four treatment groups. To be included in the study a participant must not ever have had PMR, Reiki, or any type of laying-on-of-hands therapy and must have experienced pain and stress for one or more years. All participants attended 10 biweekly sessions. Outcome parameters were measured pre-test, post-test and at 3 month follow-up.

Reiki significantly reduced pain, depression and state anxiety. Personality changes, such as reduction in trait anxiety, enhancement of self-esteem, and a shift toward a greater sense of internal locus of control, were evident after Reiki. Reiki was also shown effective in strengthening participants’ faith in God. The results also showed that men had significantly greater reduction in depression than women, but women had significantly stronger faith in God after Reiki treatments. The follow-up showed that Reiki has a lasting effect (up to three months).

Good number of participants. Within subject crossover study so each subject received treatment and non-treatment or placebo. Well designed and controlled except that control group and placebo group subjects were treated differently to the sham Reiki and Reiki subjects, and might therefore have been aware of their treatment assignments.

Although participants were randomly assigned to groups, they were self-selected (responded to an advertisement for a Reiki study). Participants had multiple medical conditions.

This article was translated from Japanese by Hyakuten Inamoto.

William: Would you please give a description for each of these Japanese Reiki techniques:

Doi Sensei:

Byosen: This is negative energy that occurs at the area of the cause of a disorder or disease.

Kenyoku: Traditionally a body is cleansed with water before performing sacred rituals, and Kenyoku is a purification method to cleanse a body with Reiki energy in place of water.

Joshin-kokyu: This is a breathing method to purify the mind.

Gassho: This is done by placing the hands together in front of one's breast to express gratitude or to say a prayer.

Seishin-to-itsu: This a meditation method used to calm the mind and let go of idle/stray thoughts.

Reiju: This is the original form of Japanese attunement.

Reiki-mawashi: Students stand in a circle holding hands and allow Reiki energy to flow around the circle.

Shuchu-Reiki: This is done in a group with hands in Gassho. The students focus their consciousness on an one thing such as a person, an object, an event, a venue, etc., and the Reiki energy of all the practitioners is concentrated on the object. Shuchu-Reiki can be done when we pray for the world peace or for health and happiness.

William: What role did Hayashi Sensei play in the Gakkai?

Doi Sensei: It is said that Hayashi Chujiro Sensei was the last Shinpiden disciple certified by Usui Sensei and was Shihan . At the time a Shinpiden disciple was supposed to engage in the spread of Reiki Ryoho and in Reiki treatments at the Gakkai head office or to open branch offices and engage in Reiki activities. Usui Sensei assigned a task to Hayashi Sensei, who was a naval doctor, to open a Reiki clinic apart from the Gakkai activities, in order to study and promote the efficacy of Reiki Ryoho from a medical doctor’s point of view. Of course, it was intended for the results to feed back to the Gakkai .

William: I understand that he broke away from the Gakkai to form his own school. Can you tell us why he did this?

Doi Sensei: Hayashi Reiki Kenkyu Kai is said to have started at the time Hayashi Sensei opened the clinic, not at the time he left the Gakkai. The role of Hayashi Sensei was “to cure many of the sick by means of Reiki treatments,” and “to study to improve the efficacy of Reiki Ryoho through treatments.” His clinic’s purpose was to accomplish this former goal and the latter one resulted in the organization of Hayashi Reiki Kenkyu Kai. Neither of these activities was part of the Gakkai, but was set up through Usui Sensei, though both seemed to have been initiated with the full support of the Gakkai.

It was after Usui Sensei’s transition, or death, that Hayashi Sensei became independent as Hayashi Reiki Kenkyu Kai and left the Gakkai. Supposedly, there were differences of opinion between then President Ushida and Hayashi Sensei. It appears that a policy allowing Hayashi Sensei to study freely was changed. Hayashi Sensei, after having become independent as Hayashi Reiki Kenkyu Kai, respected Usui Sensei and kept handing down Usui Sensei’s teachings and the name of Usui Reiki Ryoho to people. He did this by practicing Reiki treatments and teaching classes with a scroll hanging in the front of the room, written by Hayashi Sensei himself, bearing the Five Precepts--Usui Mikao Sensei Ikun Gokai— an admonition of the late Usui Mikao Sensei. The same three-level system as the Gakkai, with Shoden, Okuden, and Shinpiden levels, was adopted. Certificates issued are under the name of Hayashi Reiki Kenkyu Kai, but they carry the name Shinshin Kaizen Usui Reiki Ryoho or Mind/Body Improvement Usui Reiki Ryoho, to signify that Usui Reiki Ryoho is instructed.

William: How did Hayashi Sensei’s style of Reiki change after he left the Gakkai?

Doi Sensei: It is not that his style changed when he left the Gakkai , but that a new style was developed from the beginning of his Kenkyu Kai .

A recipient, except a seriously ill person, was to sit when receiving treatment; this sitting position was changed to a lying position on a table. The treatment method was changed from one-on-one to several-on-one.

These are the most outstanding features of the change, but the following changes are also recognized:

An original hands-on position was developed and the new Reiki Ryoho Shinshin or “Guidelines for Reiki Healing Method” were created. A new system of conferring and passing on Reiki Ryoho was established, and a monthly five-day workshop was held at which Okuden was given.

While at the Gakkai, the navel and the Tanden were considered important, the energy centers like the meridian lines of acupuncture, Tsubo, or vital points, and charka, etc. became important.

William: Were there any other members who broke away from the Gakkai and started their own schools of Reiki similar to what Hayashi Sensei did?

Doi Sensei: It’s said that at the time of Mr. Ushida’s presidency many members broke away. The following two that are well known:

Mr. Eguchi Toshihiro learned Reiki Ryoho from 1925 to 1927. Critical of the Gakkai, he became independent, and set up Tenohira Ryochi Kenkyu Kai. Well known among his students were Mr. Eguchi Yasukiyo, Mr. Mitsui Koshi, and Mr. Miyazaki Goro. It is estimated that there were 500,000 students under him.

Mr. Tomita Kaiji learned Reiki Ryoho from around 1925 and set up Teate Ryoho Kai after Usui Sensei’s death. He propagated Tomita-ryu Teate Ryoho. There were four levels: Shoden, Chuden, Okuden, and Kaiden. Each level was to be completed in five days with two hours’ training each day, but fifteen days were required to complete Kaiden. Famous among his students was Mr. Asuke Jiro. It’s estimated that there were over 200,000 students.

Besides the two people mentioned above, it’s said that there were several people who established new organizations or became religious men, but this is denied by each organization involved. Only Hayashi Sensei kept handing down the name of Usui Reiki Ryoho in respect for Usui Sensei, even after he had broken away from the Gakkai.

William: Is there anything interesting about the Gakkai and its teachings that you think important for us in the West to know?

Doi Sensei: It seems there are rumors that the Gakkai is exclusive and reluctant to accept people, that those who have learned Western Reiki will be excluded, or that foreign people in particular are excluded. If these rumors were true I may well have already been expelled from the Gakkai myself. I have never concealed the fact of my having learned Western Reiki and Shinpiden and Okuden practitioners from the Gakkai freely come and join my Reiki Gathering.

On the other hand, it is true that there are some among the senior members who are not happy with my activities outside the Gakkai . This kind of thing happens everywhere. I believe that all I need to do is just do my part. I heard that a foreign lady once met with Koyama Sensei just before leaving Japan, and that she was very moved to hear Koyama Sensei say, “You could be a member and learn if you would stay here longer.” Koyama Sensei was very thoughtful and all embracing, and I think because she was so, she had no intention to exclude people.

Yet it is true that the Gakkai has shrunken in size and has not established a system to enroll many new members. This is because Koyama Sensei, having assumed office as the first female president at the time of turmoil after the war, was very busy struggling to preserve the light of tradition that was, at many points in time, on the edge of ruin, as people showed no interest in Reiki. This may have resulted in the Gakkai appearing to be exclusive from an outside point of view .

At the New Year meeting at the Gakkai Head Office in January of 2001, Mr. Kondo, the current president, asked me to tell to him and the other Shihan (teachers) about the state of Reiki in the West. They all expressed a strong interest. I proposed that the Gakkai could offer information on the Gakkai website. But they were not ready for that, and the proposal was declined.

Later, I asked for a message from the president to be delivered at the URRI Spain 2001 meeting, but in vain. However, Kondo Sensei does say to the members whenever he has an opportunity, “Let’s uplift ourselves so that we do not feel ashamed in the face of Reiki people in the West.”

On a New Year’s greeting card from Kondo Sensei this year he wrote, “I feel happy to learn that Reiki is being globally recognized.” Usui Sensei voiced this wish for the future: “I’d like to share a joy in common with many people by teaching them Reiki Ryoho.” I believe that wish will be realized, and that everybody will be able to touch Usui Sensei’s energy.

William: Can you explain Gendai Reiki and why you decided to create it?

Doi Sensei:Gendai Reiki Ho, or Gendai Reiki, based on Usui Sensei’s philosophy and the rationality of Western Reiki, is designed to be easily practiced in daily life and with maximum benefits. It is not “a new Reiki Ryoho”, nor is it “a new Reiki lineage”, but it is “the new method to practice Reiki Ryoho”, which I’ve been practicing for myself and of which I have been enjoying the benefits all of the time.

How Gendai Reiki Ho was created

I learned Western Reiki and acknowledged that it is highly effective. Later, I was initiated into Reiki by Koyama Sensei, president of the Gakkai , and I really felt the lofty spirituality handed down from Usui Sensei. Since then, I came by valuable materials and information about Reiki. I sorted and structured them with a focus on “mind/body healing” and “spiritual growth” so that I could benefit from it myself. That is what is called Gendai Reiki Ho . At first I was practicing it alone, but my friend who had become aware of a change in me asked that I hold a seminar for three therapists. That was the impetus for spreading it to people who were drawn to me. We have been striving together to grow ever since.

*The purpose of the technique of Gendai Reiki Ho is to complete a receiving set of Reiki.

Usui Sensei said, “Reiki is Ki (energy) and Light that fills the universe.” Reiki are waves of light that lead all to harmony, and fill the space all around us. In order to receive Reiki, it is necessary that a receiving set is completed. The techniques of Gendai Reiki Ho are those of “self-purification and self-development’ that aim at resonance with Reiki waves all of the time, with no consciousness required after completion of a receiving set, but with lots of conscious practices of the techniques.

It is not their purpose merely to be learned and used.

The basic points of Gendai Reiki Ho

Gendai Reiki Ho was structured based on the following four premises

1. “Mind/body healing” and “spiritual growth” are the key words. These are techniques that allow one to live life abundantly.

2. Effectiveness is stressed. Dogmatism, prejudice and secrecy should be avoided. 3. Secret, mystery and miracle are not advocated.

4. Effective techniques that promote characteristics of Reiki should be adopted. The purpose and reason should be clarified.

5. Techniques should be simplified, standardized and easily used. Use in daily life comes first.

William: Is Gendai Reiki considered to be Japanese Reiki or is it a combination of Japanese and Western Reiki?

Doi Sensei: Gendai Reiki Ryoho can be considered to be Japanese Reiki seen from the perspective of “the energy”, but seen from that of “the use” it is a combination of Japanese and Western. However, from a standpoint of efficacy for “mind/body healing” and “spiritual growth”, the techniques are adopted not only from Japanese Reiki or Western Reiki, but also from other than Reiki Ryoho. In Japan Gendai Reiki is being understood that it is a simplified Japanese Reiki for modern people with an addition of rationality (practicality) of Western Reiki.

World Peace Card Meditation
Wednesday, July 13, 7:30pm

Future Dates

Wednesday, August 17 at 7:30pm

You are invited to take part in the next World Peace Card Meditations. Please mark your calendar and forward this notice to all your friends.

Thanks for Your Help!

Because so many of you forwarded this email to your friends, there have been almost 235,000 downloads of the World Peace Cards. This is a tremendous increase in the number of people using the cards. So far the total number of World Peace Card sets downloaded, received from our free offer and from our magazine has been nearly 250,000! I hope you have been using your peace cards as their use brings blessings to the world as well as to you.

The next World Peace Card group meditations have been scheduled for Wednesday, July 15 at 7:30pm. This is local time in your time zone. This method has been chosen because of the special effect it produces. As people meditate in each successive time zone the energy builds like a wave which gets stronger and stronger as it circles the planet. Because of the higher dimensional nature of consciousness, the energy of peace will be transmitted for a full 24 hours and continue long after this.

Reports from those who took part in the previous meditations indicate many had powerful spiritual experiences. As they united with those taking part in the meditation a feeling of peace developed within that stayed with each for a long time. Some saw beautiful golden light surrounding the planet and others felt that a web of fear was dissipating and being replaced with trust in others and for our future.

All those who have received the cards are being asked to meditate on world peace at this time. By taking part in this group meditation, you’ll be joining thousands of people who will be using the cards to bring peace to the world. By joining together, the affect we have will be greatly multiplied. This powerful experience and will help shift the vibration of our wonderful planet into a higher state of consciousness. As you use the cards to meditate on world peace, you will be a beacon through which peace will spread around the planet which will have a positive uplifting effect on all people.

Please set aside this time to meditate with the cards. The suggested meditation period is 15 minutes, but of course you can meditate longer if you’d like to. The technique I’d like you to use is based on allowing yourself to be a beacon of peace. The World Peace Cards hold the vibration of the World Peace Grids which have been placed at spiritually significant locations and are relay stations for higher consciousness. By simply opening to their energy, you’ll become a channel for their love and peace which will flow through you to all the people on Earth. To do this, hold the cards in your hands or place them in front of you. Then simply meditate on peace.

We are entering a new era. Our entire planet including all the people and living things are moving into a place where it will be much easier to solve our problems and to create peace, prosperity and happiness for everyone. The World Peace Card meditation will quicken this process, making it easier for people to experience this new quality of higher consciousness and will provide great benefit for all people. Since this benefit will be flowing through you out to everyone on the planet, you'll be blessed by this experience as well.

Many have received the cards in the mail or in the Reiki News Magazine while others have downloaded them from our web site. If you would like additional copies of the cards, please download them using this link and print as many copies as you can use. Please feel free to give them to your friends. Also, forward this email to anyone you feel would like to take part in the meditation.

Reiki Stories

Reiki Helps Car Accident Injury and Stroke
One day after my yoga class I witnessed a car accident where an older gentleman was thrown out of his jeep right on the cement sidewalk. He laid there without any signs of life, with a severely bleeding head injury. Without any thoughts or hesitation I parked me car and walked toward him. I started to give him Reiki, and gently moved his body to a safer place. I remember talking to him and sending a lots of Reiki energy to him, he gently opened his eyes and he smiled and thanked me. When the ambulance came I said good-bye to him and one man followed me. I turned around and he said that he witnessed angels around me and the injured man and asked me if I was a nurse. I should clarify also that before this occurrence I had tremendous fear of blood. Reiki just melted my fear completely away.

Well, a couple of months later I flew to Prague, Czech republic to visit my father. He was then 89 years old and lonely, since my mother passed away a couple of years before. One evening I went out with my girlfriend to very a beautiful art show and shortly after the show went home to be with my dad. I found my father under the table unconscious in a large pool of blood. Without any hesitation I started to flow Reiki to him and stayed very calm. I moved my dad to more a comfortable place and I was talking to him. My father opened his eyes, and with a gentle expression and confidence on his face he told that he knows he will be all right. At this point I called the ambulance. The results from MRI were pretty grim, major brain damage from the stroke. To make the story short, my father's mind recovered as I often joked with him that his memory was better than mine and he lived to be 91. I am so grateful to Reiki for all the love, courage, creativity, opening of my heart and joy that it brought into my life. Dascha Friedl

Paralyzed Speech Healed
A medical practitioner that had a severe heart attack 5 years back ended up with his left side paralyzed. With repeated physical therapy he can now walk a little bit. His tongue is also partially paralyzed so his speech is not clear. His wife requested I start giving him Reiki with the aim to get his speech clear. On the seventh day I got feed back from his wife that his voice is becoming clear and his behavior has become quite decent. I talked to him over the phone and found that his speech has become almost clear and he is quite happy to find this improvement. Though he does not have faith in Reiki yet he wanted me to continue. I feel this is a miracle. God is great. Subhash Kanti Bose

Reiki and Heart Attacks
Without a sound, a man collapsed, sliding silently from his chair and onto the floor. People crowded around him, and one person, a Reiki Level One, began hands-on while I went into another room. I could clearly feel his heart beat. It was very faint and squishy (a technical term?).

As energy began to flow, a slightly different connection was made and I found that my heart was beating for his. That was new to me, but it added a lot of depth to Usui-Sensei's statement to "Always expect there to be oneness." The man was sitting up by the time the paramedics arrived.

Less than a week later, a friend phoned. She had just called 911; her husband was having a heart attack. His heartbeat was entirely different: fluttery and erratic, a bit like static on the radio. Again the link was made allowing my heart to beat for his. He toowas sitting up when the paramedics arrived.

Similar scenes have happened over the years-similar, yet each one entirely different. Panic attacks respond in a similar manner, except that the victims' breathing and heart rate move into synch with mine. There seems to be a definite increase in panic attacks nowadays. W. Craig
