Usui Sensei's Original Reiki Handbook

Excerpt from the Reiki Ryoho Hikkei
translated by Hyakuten Inamoto

Editor's note: The following is a translation of one section from the Reiki workbook that Usui sensei gave to his Reiki students. Reiki Ryoho Hikkei is translated to mean Reiki Healing Art Handbook. The section that follows is the Kokai Denju Setsumei, a questions and answer session about Reiki with the answers coming from Usui sensei and the questions coming from his students in the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai. The remaining two sections of the workbook, Ryoho Shishin, guidelines for treatment, and Meiji Tenno Gyosei, the Emperor Meiji’s poems, may be included in a future issue of the magazine.

Explanation of Open Teaching

From olden days till now, when one created or discovered an original and mystic teaching, he tended only to teach it to his own children, making the teaching a privilege of the family and claiming that the contents of the teaching should be kept confidential within the family, so as to scheme for financial security of one’s posterity. That can be said to be an outdated custom of the last century. It is absolutely not acceptable to privately monopolize a teaching in modern times when co-existence and co-prosperity of humanity underlie happiness and also when social development is desired.

My Usui Reiki Ryoho (healing art) is original, never before explored, and incomparable in the world. Therefore, it is to be made available for the good of humankind, so that anyone may be blessed with this heavenly gift, that the soul and body may be as one, and heaven-sent well-being may be realized in one’s life. Because my Reiki Ryoho is a unique and original art of healing based on the healing power of the universe, a person first becomes healthy and then soundness of thought and the joys of life are enhanced.

The reason I venture to teach openly, at a time like today when improvement and reconstruction of our lives within and without is essential, is to save all fellow countrymen from troubled minds and from sickness and diseases.

Q.) What is Usui Reiki Ryoho?
A.) Receiving with profound awe and reverence the teachings of the Emperor Meiji, achieving our Principles, and intending to train and develop the mind and body. First, the mind should be healed, and secondly the physical body be made healthy so as to walk on the right path of humanity. If the mind is healthy, conforming to a path of integrity, then the body becomes sturdy of its own accord.

The mission of Usui Reiki Ryoho is to enhance mutual well-being for oneself and others, on the one hand, by fulfilling a peaceful and joyful life mentally and physically and, on the other, by healing the sick.

Q.) Is Usui Reiki Ryoho the same as hypnotism, the art of mental healing with Ki-ai, faith healing, and the like, just with a different name?
A.) No, it is not the same as these other techniques. It is the art of healing the mind and body, which I have realized as a mystic after many years of hard and difficult training.

Q.) Then, is it the art of a spiritual healing?
A.) Yes, it can be called the art of a spiritual healing, however, it can also be called the art of a physical healing. The reason for it is that any part of the physical body of a practitioner may radiate the energy and light, particularly from the eyes, mouth, and hands. Therefore, by means of gazing at for a few minutes, or blowing on, or stroking the affected part, toothache, colic, stomachache, neuralgia, breast tumor, bruises, cuts, burns, and other swellings and pains can quickly be relieved and be gone. However, chronic diseases are not easy to cure. Several treatments are required; yet even a chronic disease becomes better with one treatment.

There is fact beyond fiction. I wonder how modern medicine can explain this kind of phenomena. If you actually see the fact, you will be sure to acknowledge it. Even those who play around with sophistry cannot ignore the fact.

Q.) Does one need to believe in Usui Reiki Ryoho so that an illness can be cured?
A.) No, unlike psychological therapy, hypnotism, and other mental healing modalities, no consent nor esteem is required, for not a single suggestion is given. Moreover, it matters little whether you may doubt, avoid, and deny that. For instance, there is a positive effect on those who lack consciousness, such as infants and/or seriously ill patients. Barely one out of ten people trust and esteem my art of healing before they experience it the first time. Most people come to trust suddenly after having received treatment once and acknowledged its effect.

Q.) Can any disease be cured by Usui Reiki Ryoho?
A.) Any disease, mental or organic, can be cured.

Q.) Does Usui Reiki Ryoho cure diseases only?
A.) No, not only cure diseases of a physical body but also mental illnesses , i.e., anguish, weakness, cowardice, vacillation, nervousness, and other bad habits can be cured. And emphasis is placed on healing others with god-like or Buddha-like mind, and happiness can be mutually shared with other people.

Q.) Why and how does Usui Reiki Ryoho work?
A.) I have not been taught this art of healing by anyone under the heavens, nor have I studied in order to obtain this mysterious ability to heal. I accidentally realized that I was given this mysterious healing ability when I felt the great power and was inspired by the mystery during a period of fasting. Therefore, even as the founder, I find it difficult to give a sure explanation. Scientists and intellectuals have been eagerly researching and consider it difficult to confirm with modern science, yet the time will surely come when science can prove it.

Summertime Reiki
by Wililam Lee Rand

Summer is peaking and many people, including adults and their children are outdoors, hiking, swimming, and laying on the beach; all healthy activities if done with wisdom, but also prone to possible hazards. Lucky we have Reiki. Here are a few suggestions for tending to some of the possible issues:

Bug bites: These can include mosquitoes, bee and wasp stings and ticks. Remember to use Reiki on your insect repellent before applying it and it will help neutralize any toxic effect the chemicals might have. If you get a mosquito bite(s), rather than scratching, just give your bites Reiki. This will help your body deal with the irritation and process the toxic affects more quickly. Another technique is to lightly scratch around the bite, but not directly on it while using Reiki. This will reduce the itching.

If you are hiking around bees or wasps, rather than be afraid, think kind thoughts toward them and give them Reiki. Remember, bees and wasps only sting if they feel threatened – by sending Reiki, you’ll help them feel safe. If an insect enters your tent or comes into your home, create an opening for them to leave and while sending Reiki, direct the insect with your mind to find the opening and fly away. This has worked for me so many times that when it happens I find it enjoyable to interact with bees or other insects in this way and guide them to freedom.

However, if you are stung by a bee, pull out the stinger by scraping a plastic card across the sting as soon as you can and give the area Reiki. The use of tweezers only forces more toxin into the body. If you can’t pull out the stinger, then just give the area Reiki. Many people have reported that Reiki released the pain of the bee sting and there was no swelling or other affects.

In some southern and western states in the US and other parts of the world some bees have become Africanized. These bees attack in swarms with little or no provocation. Their stings aren't more poisonous than regular bees, but multiple stings add up and could become dangerous. In the rare case you are attacked by these kinds of bees, cover your head and move as fast as you can to an enclosed space. If you know that Africanized bees are in the area, I suggest not hiking there or at the very least, get a good guide book or article that explains how to protect yourself from them. If you or someone you are with receives multiple bee stings, remain calm, give lots of Reiki to the areas stung, and also to the kidneys and liver. Consider going to a hospital if there are more than 10 stings. Remember that in most areas bees are not Africanized and will not sting you unless you threaten them. Here is a map where Africanized bees have been sited: http://www.stingshield.com/all-us.htm

If you are hiking in an area that is known to have deer and you get an insect bit that contains a small black dot in the center, remove the black dot by scrapping it with a plastic card, give the area Reiki and also go to a doctor within a few days or so or as soon as you can as you may have been bitten by a deer tick and could contract Lyme disease. Giving the area Reiki will slow or stop the infection, but in cases like this, it’s always better to play it safe and combine Reiki with allopathic medicine by seeing a doctor. Lyme disease is successfully treated with antibiotics as long as one begins treatment soon enough. Click here for more information on Lyme disease: http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvbid/lyme/index.htm

Sunburn: Make sure you use suntan lotion with a strong SPF factor on all exposed areas. Give Reiki to the lotion before applying it. If you get sunburned, give Reiki to the area but hold the hands at least 4-6 inches away from the skin. If this still produces too much heat, use the distant symbol and send Reiki to yourself or to the one being treated at a distance. Also, send Reiki to the kidneys and liver as burns create toxins that the body must release. This is why one often gets a headache and feels tired. Giving the kidneys and liver extra help will reduce these effects and help the body recover more quickly. There will also be less pealing and a greater likelihood of a healthier tan.

Sore Muscles
Sports activities or other outdoor fun can sometimes inspire us to over exert ourselves resulting in muscle soreness showing up during exercise, hours later or the next day. To reduce the likelihood of this happening do stretching and warm up exercises before fully exerting yourself. Also, during warm-ups, give Reiki to the muscles you’ll be using. If you feel a muscle becoming sore during the exercise or sports activity, give Reiki to the muscle group during the activity even if you have only a minute or less to treat. I recall being involved in a volley ball game and pulling a shoulder muscle. I was able to give myself Reiki while waiting for the next several serves and recovered while still in the game – much to the amazement of my team mates.

If you do end up with sore muscles after exercising, just give Reiki to the area and the joints and ligaments connected to the sore muscles. Reiki will increase circulation, release any residual stress and reduce the pain which will help the muscles recover more quickly.

A training secret for serious athletes is to receive a Reiki treatment immediately after exercising when you are in your cool down period. This will cause your muscles to heal more quickly and actually become stronger resulting in performance improvements beyond what you’d get without Reiki.

Sprains
A sprained ankle can be a serious problem, especially if one is hiking and far along the trail. However, Reiki has an excellent record helping sprains. The sooner one applies Reiki, the faster it will work and the more healing one will receive. If you or someone gets a sprained ankle, apply Reiki immediately to the area. Continue for at least 15 minutes or until the pain goes away. Have the person slowly try to stand and walk. If there is still pain, give more Reiki. If you started walking and the pain returns, give more Reiki right away. This process will tend to greatly reduce the pain and swelling, thus allowing you to continue hiking or return to your car.

Summertime is a time to have fun, to be outdoors, breathe fresh air, feel the sun and be one with nature. But at the same time, if a challenge comes up, always remember to use your Reiki. You’ll be surprised at the help it will bring to virtually any situation.

Reiki Stories

Reiki Baby!
The doctor called me after my 6 week sonogram and said "I’m sorry but I would expect a miscarriage based on the findings of our test."  I was devastated.  He continued, “For the time being there is a heartbeat but it was very slow.”  “Strangely,” he said, "It has a very large nutritional sac."  From that statement I knew I had a chance to save my little zygote.

I was already doing regular Reiki treatments on myself from the conception of the pregnancy but now I had a mission and I intensified my concentration.  At 9 weeks I was admitted to the hospital for severe dehydration and vomiting.  I could not keep anything down and lost 10 lbs in a week.  They admitted me to the maternity ward inserted an IV and said maybe you should let this one go.

But I couldn’t let this one go.  I had already bonded with this little being and had dreams of a little girl.  She had brown curly hair and brown eyes and the cutest face that I ever saw.  In my dream she wore a little white dress and white sandals. It was her 1st birthday party and we were playing in the front yard.  I picked her up, high above my head and then slowly brought her down to my face so that I could kiss her. It was too late to let this one go.

Then, on June 8, at 8:04 a.m. she entered the world.  I was in hard labor for 10 hours.  She was exactly like how I saw her in my dream. Against all odds, I believe the constant flow of Reiki, prayer and my love formed her beautiful little soul.  We are a little more than one month away from her 1st birthday.  Jennifer Williamson

Brain Damage Healed
My niece was born at the end of July last year.  By the time everyone realized that her heart was failing she had been without oxygen for long enough to cause scarring on the brain and was dying.  My Mother and I, both 2nd degree Reiki practitioners were 600 miles away.  When we got the news we started distance Reiki flowing.  We kept it up on the 2 hour drive to the airport and the 3 hour flight to the hospital.  We kept it going in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit all through that long night.

In the morning, the doctor told us that not only did she survive the night against all odds but was showing signs of improvement.  We stayed at her side for a week giving Reiki continuously.  My beautiful niece has improved so much that she was able to undergo a successful heart transplant in December.  I have sent her distance Reiki every morning of her life and I visit her in the hospital for a week every month and now she recognizes my Reiki energy the minute I walk into the room.  This baby had an MRI last month with no sign of the brain scarring that had been so evident on that first MRI.

I send Reiki daily to the beautiful child and parents that had the courage to think of organ donation at their most desperate time.  I don't know how to thank them for their amazing gift and trust in the intelligence of Reiki to find a way. Jayne Bury

Reiki and Brain Surgery
December of 2005 my sister underwent surgery to repair a small aneurysm at the base of her brain.  The morning of the surgery she laid waiting in pre-op scared and nervous.  Completely overwhelmed with fear she begged for someone to give her something to calm down. I stood up and began running Reiki energy to her heart and crown chakra's and in about 15 minutes I saw her begin to calm down.  I asked her how she was feeling and she said she felt like someone had just given herf a sedative.

I continued to run energy to her until they came to get her for her surgery which was about an hour and a half.  Afterwards when they wheeled her from the operating room she was completely alert and talking to us all the way to the ICU where she was to stay for observation.  The nurses kept coming in and asking her if she had any pain and she said no she was fine.  They couldn't believe how alert she was and they kept telling her if she had pain to let them know. She didn't take the first pain pill!  The doctor's obviously expected her to have quite a headache as they sent her home with major pain killers.

She was doing so well in fact we had to continually remind her she had just had brain surgery and to take it easy!   The whole procedure went as smooth as silk and I firmly believe it was due to the awesome healing power of Reiki!  Blessings, Rita Johnson

Reiki Helps Head Injury
My 25 year old son Raymond was in a motor vehicle accident 5 years ago and sustained a serious brain injury. The left side of his skull was fractured in several pieces and he had
hemorrhaging and swelling throughout his brain. Every effort was made by the surgical staff to reduce the swelling. An intracranial pressure monitor was surgically inserted into Raymond's head to monitor the pressure surrounding his brain. He was not expected to survive. My family and I watched helplessly in the intensive care unit at St. Vincent 's Hospital as the monitor recorded the rising pressure numbers. Under the number ten is normal and Raymond's pressure was rising into the fifties.

It was during this horribly emotional time that Sister Joanne, a nun at the hospital asked if we would be interested in Reiki for our son. It was available through the hospital's foundation, she added. I had heard of Reiki but had not personally experienced it. We were desperate and open to anything and everything that could possibly help our son. He was in a coma. He was dying. "Yes", I said and within minutes of Sister Joanne calling the Reiki therapist, a young woman stepped off the hospital floor elevator and into the intensive care waiting room. She had an ethereal quality about her and radiated such peace that I knew she must be the Reiki therapist. Her name was Vera and as soon as she placed her hands on our son, the number on the intracranial pressure monitor started to decrease. We watched with awe and reverence. We thought a miracle was happening.

That experience was our first exposure to the healing power of Reiki. Those of us who stood by my son's bedside that afternoon saw with our own eyes the power of Reiki energy. We all saw the reduction of intracranial pressure being reflected and quantified by the decreasing numbers on a medical instrument as the Reiki therapist placed her healing hands over my son. Fortunately my son did survive.  After that powerful and emotional initiation to Reiki, I then also became a Reiki therapist to assist my son in his long, rehabilitative path to wellness. Reiki is a part of my every day now. It is a touch from the Divine that came at a sorrowful and desperate time and became a blessing in the lives of my whole family. Maria Gaines
