Reiki in the New Year
by William Lee Rand
The New Year is upon us and at least for most of us, we’ve had time to recover from the holidays. So, this is a good time to think about what lies ahead and how we can use Reiki to make this an absolutely amazing year. We know from experience that it’s always helpful to maintain a positive mental attitude. This is validated by research indicating that optimists are healthier and live longer than pessimists. According to an article in The Archives of General Psychiatry (Nov 2004), optimists have a 55% lower risk of death from all causes and a 23% lower risk of cardiovascular death than pessimists. By keeping your vibration high, you’ll always create better results and enjoy life more regardless of what you’re doing. What better way to uplift your spirits than to do lots of Reiki throughout the coming year. Here are some ideas on how you can accomplish this.
Self-Sessions: If you’re not already doing it, create a schedule to give yourself Reiki sessions everyday. You could take 15 minutes or more during lunch each day to do this, or as soon as you get home from work, or at a specific time each day. Making it a regular habit is what will make this work. You’ll be amazed as you do this everyday, now much better you feel.
Sessions for Others: If you haven’t given a Reiki session to someone lately, go ahead and offer a free session. Most people will agree and usually enthusiastically to accept a free Reiki session. Remember, when you give Reiki to another you also receive Reiki. Giving free sessions to friends and family are a great way to help others and when it’s someone you know the good karma comes back right away!
Reiki Share Groups: Attending a Reiki share group is a great way to both give and receive Reiki. These groups are usually free or sometimes request a love donation or a small fee. By joining a group, you’ll meet new Reiki people, and feel the joy of sharing Reiki with others. You can sometimes find ads for these groups in your local metaphysical/holistic paper, or at health food store bulletin boards or new age book stores or just by asking around. If you discover there isn’t a group in your area, consider starting one. To learn more on this subject, read Reikishares by Laurelle Shanti Gaia and Amy Z. Rowland in the spring 05 back issue of Reiki News Magazine.
Volunteer Reiki: There are a number of ways you can volunteer to give Reiki sessions to those in need. More and more hospitals are offering Reiki sessions to their patients. These sessions are usually offered free as part of the hospitals regular services. Often lay volunteers are asked to take a short hospital orientation program before being allowed to take part in the hospital program. To learn more about this, go to www.reikiinhospitals.org. These programs are also offered at retirement homes, hospice care centers, churches and other locations. By volunteering for programs such as these, you’ll be giving Reiki to those who really need it which is not only a great blessing for them, but can also have a wonderful affect on your heart. If you can’t find a volunteer program in your area, consider starting one. To learn more about how to do this, read: A Volunteer Reiki Program? Getting Started by Karen Wise Olander, M. Ed in the winter 2005 issue of Reiki News Magazine.
A Professional Reiki Practice: If you’ve been giving sessions to family and friends then perhaps it’s time to start a professional practice. By charging money, you’ll have a business and be earning an income which is a great accomplishment for 2008. Also, you’ll be offering a very special service that allows people to choose when they receive their Reiki sessions. Not only will you receive income, but also you’ll receive their appreciation for all the good you’ll be doing. Start at a low fee such as $5 per session and let everyone know you’ll be giving 8 sessions at $5 and then will raise your price to $10 – let everyone know this. This will motivate people to get their session right away before the price goes up. Continue with this process until you raise your price to your target fee which as a rule of thumb can be whatever people are charging for massage in your area. To read more on developing your Reiki practice, click here.
Teaching Reiki: This can be a very rewarding experience. Start by teaching family and friends for free or for a very low fee. This can be done in a casual way as long as you include the main topics: What is Reiki, how does it heal, a brief description of the history, explain the attunement, and give the attunement and practice. Self-treatments and treating others are important. Once you’ve done this a few times, you’ll be ready to go on to teach your first professional class and charge money. To prepare create outlines of your talks and practice by speaking into a tape recorder and playing it back. Make notes on how to improve your talks, and then practice some more until you’re confident. Set up a fee development schedule similar to the one mentioned above for a Professional Reiki Practice. Take your teaching practice seriously and as you gain in experience and develop your professional qualifications, your classes will be more valuable to your students and you can charge more. I suggest charging at least $25 for your first Reiki one class, and work your way up to your target fee which can be between $100.00 and $200.00. Having a good Reiki manual and other teaching aid can be very helpful to you and your students. Here is a link to the manual and teaching aids I use in my classes: Also, to learn more about developing your teaching practice in back issues of Reiki News Magazine, click on these links. Create a Thriving Reiki Practice, Part I
Create a Thriving Reiki Practice, Part II
These are ways to increase your use of Reiki that are both practical and uplifting and you can use them to make 2008 the greatest year of your life! As you do more Reiki, your attitude will improve and this will have lasting benefits, affecting everything you do.You’ll be healthier; you’ll smile and laugh more, make new friends and have good things to say to all those you meet. Your creativity and self-confidence will improve and this will affect the way you move and walk, giving a special spring and rhythm to your step as though you’re moving to music. Blessings and wonderful new opportunities will seemingly drop into your life more frequently and you’ll move easily toward greater success and happiness. Believe me. Reiki can do this for you. All you have to do is start using Reiki more frequently on a regular basis everyday. May your use of Reiki bless you with great joy and enthusiasm; may your life overflow with an abundance of everything that is good and loving and kind.

Reiki For Peace
by Amy Z. Rowland
This is an excerpt from the complete article that appears in the winter edition of the Reiki News Magazine.
Outside Sahoji Temple in Tokyo , there is a very tall stone inscribed with Japanese calligraphy that gives an account of Mikao Usui’s life. This stone, called the Usui Memorial, was erected soon after Usui Sensei’s death in March 1926. The author of the inscription, one of Usui’s students, concludes the tribute with this remarkable expression of hope: “If Reiki can be spread throughout the world it will touch the human heart and the morals of society. It will be helpful for many people, and will not only heal disease, but also the Earth as a whole.” 1
Now, just over eighty years after those words were written, we stand at a profound moment of opportunity. Millions of people practice Reiki worldwide. For decades, Reiki has been slowly spreading and gently healing individuals, families, and communities. Many Reiki practitioners have witnessed miracles. Some acknowledge that Reiki has healed their hearts, their minds, their souls. Can we take the next step? Through our commitment to Reiki practice and to daily reflection on the Reiki Ideals , can we affect human morality? Can we bring about healing of “the Earth as a whole”?
The task seems overwhelming. To the individual mind, even just one of the environmental issues we face seems enough to confound our problem-solving ability. What can we do, we wonder, to reverse global warming and the melting of the ice caps and all the havoc with the world’s weather that this ecological imbalance creates? And we recognize, of course, that the Earth needs healing not only on the physical level, but on the mental, emotional, and spiritual levels as well. How can we help to heal the ongoing war in Iraq or ease the suffering of those in Darfur who have survived “ethnic cleansing”? Such thoughts may tempt us to despair.
Yet we have Reiki, and experience with Reiki teaches us that the Reiki energy taps an infinite – and infinitely powerful – source of healing, the same source that Hawayo Takata sometimes called “God-power.” Knowing that we are attuned to Reiki, that it flows through us and radiates outward from us, we may feel encouraged to believe that healing of “the Earth as a whole” is possible. In gratitude for this chance to offer healing, releasing the outcome for the highest good, we figuratively roll up our sleeves, ready to begin. But where do we start?
Paradoxically, the history of Reiki tells us to start at home by healing ourselves and by claiming peace in our own lives. The author of the Usui Memorial writes that at the end of his meditation on Mount Kurama, Mikao Usui “…suddenly felt the great Reiki energy at the top of his head, which led to the Reiki healing system. He first used Reiki on himself…” (This accords with Hawayo Takata’s story of Usui Sensei’s life as well, familiar to the many Reiki practitioners who have been taught in the Usui Shiki Ryoho tradition.) Later, he writes, “To begin spreading the Reiki system, it is important to start from a place close to you (yourself), don’t start from something distant such as philosophy or logic.” Healing begins within, and according to both the Japanese and Western accounts of Usui Sensei’s life, Mikao Usui first used Reiki on himself, then on others.
Reiki teachers worldwide continue to reinforce the importance of self-treatment in Reiki I classes because when the practitioner is well, he or she will be more effective in treating clients. Yet there are other reasons Reiki self-treatment is important: not only does Reiki heal our physical imbalances, but it also gently and gradually heals our emotional, mental, and spiritual wounds, often with such subtlety that we are not even aware of the healing. Only in retrospect do we realize that we are living each day with a more positive attitude, a sense of greater well-being, an exhilarating awareness of freedom.
Reiki self-treatment also teaches us about peace, for as we “listen” to our hands, focusing our attention on the flow of energy, our thoughts slow and our minds become quiet. Of course, if we are “band-aiding,” informally treating ourselves as we sit behind the wheel of a car stuck in rush hour traffic, we will not be giving our complete attention to the flow of energy, nor should we under these circumstances! Yet when we claim the time to treat ourselves each day, we soon learn to appreciate Reiki’s ability to bring usinto our own peaceful center. With this awareness of our own inner peace, we are better able to live our lives, and we are able to live better lives. . . . . . .
1 The words of the inscription were first translated and published in English by German Reiki Master Frank Arjava Petter in his book, Reiki Fire: New Information about the Origins of the Reiki Power, a Complete Manual (Twin Lakes, WI: Lotus Light, 1997). Peter relied on Masano Kobayashi and Chetna M. Kobayashi, his then mother-in-law and wife, respectively, for the translation.

Reiki Stories
Reiki and Stroke
April, 2005, I had a stroke which paralyzed my left side. I went to the emergency room immediately and received tPA, a clot busting drug. The following day my neighbor, Sue, a Reiki Master came to the hospital and gave me Reiki. While she was doing the treatment my whole body felt a surge of energy and I moved my left fingers for the first time in 24 hours, my brain felt as if it was working with my total body for the first time in 24 hours. Sue gave me Reiki everyday while I was in the hospital and after returning home. I felt it was most beneficial along with rehab for my body to return almost completely back to normal.
August, 2005, I had another stroke affecting my left side and my voice. I received tPA again and my neighbor, Sue, also came to the hospital to give me Reiki everyday I was there. Upon returning home Sue continued Reiki and with rehab I regained almost all of my physical movement on the left side and I can speak again, although it is not with the same volume or sound as before. I wrote several letters to the hospital administration, the person in charge of the stroke section and also to the Volunteer Program. The Hospital uses Reiki Practitioner Volunteers in the Heart Hospital adjacent to the main hospital but to date they have not used Reiki Volunteers in the stroke section. I am presently taking Reiki I and Reiki II and will volunteer at the hospital as soon as I am certified. I feel very strongly that stroke patients benefit greatly from Reiki and the healing energy it provides. Jane
Reiki Dissolves Blood Clot
My 33 year old daughter had always been in perfect health. In mid-September she had been having difficulties due to pain and extreme pressure in her chest and upper back when she was doing anything other than lying down. At a certain point it was necessary for her to have a physical to determine the cause of the discomfort. Her M.D. thought it was important to have a CAT scan to see what this test might show. A CAT scan was done and a blood clot was found in her right lung. It was speculated that being on estrogen may have been the culprit (she had to have a total hysterectomy 4-1/2 years ago).
This was her first major experience with a serious illness and she was terrified. Unfortunately, I live 2100 miles away and couldn’t make regular visits. Many times in the past Long Distance Reiki worked but never for something this serious. I began sending Reiki twice daily for this condition. I also have a Reiki box which permitted Reiki to be sent constantly in addition to my two daily sessions. Slowly she began to feel better but there was always the worry present. Eventually the worry began to disappear and she was recently scheduled for another CAT scan.
A few days after this test the results showed that the blood clot was completely gone. In addition, as she is still seeing the doctor and her attitude has changed from worry to “let’s see what the medical profession” can find as the actual culprit for this clot. Whatever happens is better than not knowing.
So, Reiki has given her mental relief as well as physical healing. I am so grateful that Reiki came into my life and that I deemed it necessary to advance to a Karuna Reiki Master a few years ago. My family is happy also. Thomas De Mann
Hospice Healing
A friend of mine had lung cancer and when I found out about it she was already in the hospital. The doctor's held no hope and she was dying when I and another friend arrived. She was in a lot of pain and the nurses were contacting her family to come and make arrangements. A matter of hours they said. My friend and I started to use Reiki over the area where her tumor was and then proceeded to do a full body. She said the heat felt so good to her because she had been so cold. We stayed about an hour and realized her aura was very close to her body. The family came and we left to give them privacy. The next day we went back and she asked us to do "whatever it was we did again" she said she slept like a baby and had no pain. The first time in months. We gave her another treatment. The nurses saw what we were doing and closed the door to give us privacy. She sat up and spoke for a little while then fell asleep as we continued treating her. The next day I went back to see her and my heart sank; the bed was empty. I asked where she was...(meaning which funeral home) they said she went home. I could not believe it. I found her at a home of one of her friends who asked us to give Reiki treatments to her because of a bad back. We did this gladly since she was taking care of our friend. My friend eventually passed (two months later) but not in pain and fear in a hospital bed but in a home with people who loved her by her side. I treated her with Reiki energy until it felt like she was ready to go forward. She had no fear...and no pain and it was a tremendous blessing for me ...one I will never forget. Ase Mercedes
M.D. Uses Reiki
I’m a 30-year-old medical doctor from Romania, and I have two healing stories I would like to share with you. The first one is about a young woman (22 years old) who just ran away from the hospital because she was very afraid of the surgical intervention the doctors wanted to perform on her in order to remove the 7-cm cyst (confirmed by ultrasonography) on her right ovary. She contacted me on the telephone (she heard about me from a friend); fortunately for her, I was available, and I went to her that very evening. She was lying in her bed, with her boyfriend and the family gathered around her, and she was having a very intense pain in her right lower abdomen. She was hemorrhaging and was feeling really ill. At that time I had a pretty good perception of the aura, and I saw a hole in her right lower abdomen, near the location of her right ovary, through which her energy was leaking. The rupture was caused by an energetic aggression of some kind in her aura. That’s where she was having the pain, she told me. So I started the first healing session using distant Reiki, not hands-on, from classical Reiki and from Karuna Reiki® and Seichim - over the "diseased" area, and over her entire organism. After one hour and 5 minutes, the area where she had the pain was literally "numb" (she described it exactly like that) - she did not feel the pain anymore - and she got off her bed and asked for something to eat.
In the following days I performed another 2 (shorter) healing sessions (she was already feeling much better), and after that her doctor saw on the ultrasonography that the 7-cm cyst was completely gone!
The second healing was a case closer to me - someone in my family was having intense abdominal pains and severe diarrhea that day (probably an alimentary intoxication from spoiled aliments). She took some medication, but to no avail... and finally, at 10 o’clock in the evening she called me and asked me to help her. So I asked her to sit down in an armchair, and instructed her how to relax and breathe calmly, with her eyes closed. I began passing her symbols (mainly, power symbols and calming ones) - and after 30 minutes her abdominal pain was gone, and she went to bed and slept soundly that night. The next day all the trouble was gone. As a doctor, and as a holistic medicine practitioner, I believe Reiki can be one of many powerful healing systems - too good to be described even in many, many words. Adrian Petre, M.D.
