A Personal Healing Program
by William Lee Rand
Each of us comes into this existence with a unique set of personal qualities that include aptitudes that can develop into skills and abilities. There can also be challenging situations that affect us. Like the rudder on a boat, our choices determine what direction we take in life and what possibilities we explore and develop. When we are confronted with difficulties, as well as opportunities, it is how we deal with them that determines how they affect us. So it is important that we use our ability to choose wisely. A life well lived is a life of growth, a life of healing and development.
As we look back on our lives, it is easy to see turning points where we made a choice that had a powerful effect on where our life went and who we became. By thinking about our past choices and where they have taken us, it is possible to learn from our experiences and improve our ability to choose. Life is filled with many possibilities, and it is important to realize that sometimes it is the more difficult decision that brings us the greatest benefit.
If you are ill in any way or if you are experiencing any part of your life that is less than what you would like, know that it is possible to change, to heal, and to create the kind of life you want. If you want something you don't have, then the most important thing you need to do is to choose this for yourself. Then take action.
The universe is always in a state of balance. A problem, difficulty or challenging situation cannot exist unless its solution exists at the same time. If you want to solve a problem, the first thing you must do is to decide that you are going to find the solution.
Here is a law of the mind, a law of life that is very important to understand. Definiteness of purpose, sustained over time always produces results. Think about that! It always produces results! This is the most important concept you can focus on in terms of personal healing and accomplishment. If you want to heal, you need to form this into a definite purpose and pursue it with a passion and stay with it until you are healed.
The mind is like a magnet. It attracts what it thinks about most, the stronger the thoughts the stronger the attraction. If you want to heal yourself, or develop any positive quality, it is very important for you to make a clear decision that this is what you are going to do. As you hold this thought in your mind with the definite belief, and knowingness that you will achieve your result, you will attract to yourself all the resources and people you need to create the results you want.
We each have special talents, qualities and gems of value that we may not be fully expressing or perhaps not expressing at all. We were born on this planet to fulfill a purpose and that purpose is to discover our truth, who we are, what makes us unique, take possession of this precious part of ourselves and express it to the world.
Regardless of the life situation you find yourself in, it is possible for you to heal or to improve yourself and your life in a most definite way.
Reiki is a powerful tool for healing and personal growth. Its energy comes from the highest spiritual source and because of this, it will always create the best results for all concerned. It can be used to heal the body, the mind or the spirit; and can also guide us through life. It can help us develop latent talents and improve the quality of everything we do. So, if healing and personal development is what you want to accomplish, if you have not already done so, take a Reiki class.
Self-Healing Program
In developing your personal Reiki self healing program it is important to take the time to try different techniques. As you do so, be aware of the results and if the technique seems to be moving you toward your goal. If it is, continue with it, if it is not, try something else. In this way, you will develop a personal system of healing that is exactly right for you. This will greatly improve your results. There are many ways to use Reiki and I would like to present a few ideas and techniques that are powerful and effective.
Self-Treatments
Use of self-treatments is an important part of any Reiki healing/self improvement program. Set aside 15 to 30 minutes each day to give yourself a Reiki treatment. This can be a complete treatment using all the hand positions or you could use Byosen scanning and treat only those areas you are guided to. While giving yourself Reiki, your vibration will go up and as this happens I suggest you allow yourself to contemplate the various activities taking place in your life. As you do this, it is likely that you will find healthy new attitudes developing about issues in your life, as well as receive creative ideas on how to deal with them. In order to keep track of this, I suggest you get a notebook to write these ideas in and then use them in your action plans.
Personal Healing Alliance
Receiving treatments from others is also important and in fact, this is probably the most important thing you can do to keep your Reiki energy strong. I suggest you go one step further and develop a personal healing alliance. To do this, find someone you can trust who also has a health or life issue they want to heal. Meet at least once a week to exchange Reiki sessions and share what has happened since your last meeting. Form an agreement between yourselves that you will support each other completely in finding solutions to your issues and becoming completely healed. Be willing to share everything and keep what you share in your meetings strictly confidential. Use all the creativity and inspiration that comes up to solve your issues or achieve your goals. During the week set aside time to send distant Reiki to each other. You can also call each other on the phone if something comes up. These meetings must be taken seriously and it is important to focus on the steps listed above and not allow them to slip into just a social event. This is a very powerful process and will bring deep and very meaningful levels of healing.
Reiki Affirmations and Prayers
Reiki can be used in a powerful way to enhance affirmations and prayers. Place your healing goal or desired accomplishment on a 3x5 card. Using energy, draw Reiki symbols over the card. I recommend using all three Reiki II symbols and any others you may have. Then hold the card between your hands and give the card Reiki. As you do so, repeat your affirmation and/or say a prayer giving thanks that your goal has been achieved or that your healing has taken place. Say your affirmation and/or prayer over and over. Do this with conviction at least once a day. You can also carry the card with you and repeat this process whenever you have a spare moment during the day.
Going Aganist the Issue
A process that will accelerate healing is to go against the issue and use Reiki to heal the feelings and energies that come up. If you have a fear of doing something, go ahead and do it anyway - go against the fear. This process restimulates dormant psychological feelings causing them to come to the surface where you can more easily use your Reiki to heal or release them. It takes courage, but it is very powerful. Have a Reiki friend work with you to help if possible. As an example, if you have a fear of public speaking, go ahead and arrange to give a speech. Before the speech give yourself Reiki, and focus on any feelings that are coming up. After and even during the speech, give yourself Reiki focusing on the feelings. Or, if you have a fear of meeting people, decide to attend a party and deliberately introduce yourself to people at the party. Give yourself Reiki before, after and during the party if possible. If it is too scary to physically do it, then just imagine doing it in your mind and direct Reiki to the feelings as they come up. After treating the issue in this way, at some point you will be able to do it for real. When using this process, it is important to use common sense and not engage in any activities that could be dangerous.
Raising Your Vibration
Anything that will raise your vibration will help you heal more quickly. Doing things such as improving your nutrition, developing an exercise program, meditation, getting adequate rest and sleep, massage, yoga exercises or stretching, Tai Chi, social activities and other forms of entertainment will act to raise your vibration. As your vibration goes up, it will be easier for you to gain insight into your situation and create more effective solutions. It will also cause all other forms of healing to work better.
Use of Other Modalities
Remember that Reiki works in a very positive way with all other forms of healing. So, with your clear intention, and the use of Reiki energy you may be guided to other healing resources. Be on the lookout for these additional healing methods. Methods such as other techniques, changes in diet, the use of herbs, and homeopathic remedies, etc. These could greatly improve your healing process.
Medical and Psychological Care
There are many excellent medical doctors and psychologists who are open to alternative healing. If you have a medical or psychological condition, it is important that you get their advice and follow it if you feel guided to do so. If you have a serious condition and surgery or drugs are recommended, it is important to get a second opinion before deciding what to do. Remember, Reiki works in harmony with medicine and psychology and there may be some important and even necessary therapies they can offer. It is important to consider them when developing your healing program.
These are a few ways to use Reiki to create your personal healing program. Your inner guidance and your clear intention will cause you to discover others not mentioned here. Being fully engaged in this process is necessary if you are to derive the greatest benefit. To quote Helen Keller, "Life is an exciting adventure, or nothing at all." You are the one who decides which way it will be for you. The challenges we face in life contain the lessons we are here to learn. Do not withdraw from them, nor attempt to solve them half heartedly, but instead, fully embrace them. Accomplishment of a worthy personal goal brings with it more than just the results you were looking for. It also brings the certain knowledge that we can change and create the kind of life we want. In the end, when we examine our lives, it is not so much what we know in our heads that is important, nor even what we do, but what we become.

A Journey to Happiness
and Spiritual Maturity
by Christina Bjergo
In 1998, I was a reservist in the Coast Guard and a young mother of two young children, ages three and one. We had driven to the Pacific Coast to spend time with my husband’s family over the Thanksgiving holidays. The evening of Thanksgiving while everyone else slumbered, I lay awake in the dark. To amuse myself, I picked up an unknown book my mom had been urging me to read. Mom thought it would help me get in touch with suppressed anger regarding my parents’ divorce a decade earlier. Skeptical that I even had any anger about the situation, I skimmed through one short chapter all the same. Unaffected and unimpressed, I nonetheless looked through the table of contents for another section to peruse. I found a chapter on fears and feeling mildly curious, I began reading, although I did not have high expectations.
The reading, however, soon captured my attention. Though I felt quite happy in my marriage and home life, I realized as I read that there were important interests I had not pursued; that, in effect, I was letting my fears get the best of me. I had always considered myself to be brave and independent, having grown up an only child and a latch key kid. How could I be fearful? After all, I had left my family to live and study abroad during high school and loved to push through the boundaries of things that scared me with extreme sports. Perhaps that was why I was so taken aback. I was for the first time aware of an entirely different form of fear.
As I read I began to recall memories of times when I had let fears override what I wanted to do: I had as a teenager yearned to try out for the high school play, yet snuck away before the audition began. The fear of failure, the risk of embarrassing myself in front of others, and the thought that I might not be good enough stopped me back then from even trying. Moreover, it was in high school that I shifted away from fun art classes. Deciding to be a serious student, I instead focused on the science track in preparation for college and a future career in science. Closing the book, I contemplated the many subtle ways I had suppressed my creative impulses. Gazing pensively forward in the dark, I had the following dream vision:
Dream: I see a youthful Native American woman in a white buckskin dress. She is beautiful with long flowing straight black hair. One hand is raised above her head; the other palm faces the ground. With eyes blissfully closed, she begins moving counterclockwise. Floating off the ground, she continues to spiral upward into the sky. As she ascends peacefully, I watch her long dark hair billowing gracefully in the wind behind her for several seconds. After several revolutions, the young woman transforms into an angel with large white wings before becoming pure and radiant white light.
Afterwards, I instinctively felt I had experienced a big dream and that it was important for me to explore the fuller meaning of the dreaming experience. Somehow the earlier “aha,” of consciously recognizing some of my own fears had opened a space for spiritual insight to come through and guide me. Feeling thoroughly shell-shocked after the vision, I lay down next to my sleeping husband. Resting quietly in the fetal position with my right arm close to my chest, I felt the area over my heart thump outwards for an instant. I experienced the movement both inside my chest and against my arm.
Although this was difficult to believe by the scientific standards of my education, I had experienced it and, therefore, could not rationally dismiss it. Within a few minutes of the chest movement, an uncomfortable achy sensation was noticeable within the left side of my chest. Something within my heart had begun to awaken, as old issues trapped in my body were acknowledged. I had just palpably experienced the mind-body connection.
So how does this relate to Reiki you might ask? Well, as if by divine arrangement, my mom, who is a Reiki Master, was with us that Thanksgiving and was available the next morning to give me my first treatment. I noticed during this and subsequent treatments that the achy pain in my chest would subside, at least temporarily, when she put her hands on my body. I became curious about how the bioenergetics of the body could lead to healing. I wanted the pain to go away, but I also wanted to learn more about energy healing.
This “opportunity” would propel me onward in a new more creative and authentic direction. My interest in holistic health and the body-mind connection led me ultimately to become a Reiki Master, pursue a career in Traditional Chinese Medicine, teach Qigong Dreaming, and author a book on energy healing as a means to greater health, happiness and spiritual insight.
My chest pain completely cleared and I have since found great joy and peace of mind doing work that is more aligned with my true self and fulfills me. However, the biggest gain from Reiki and the other energy modalities I practice has come from the clarity received from dreams.
I have learned a little bit more about the dream I had many years ago on that important Thanksgiving Day and I now recognize it as a critical turning point in my life. The ancient Chinese describe a transformative form of energy, called Ling qi; it is like a whirling mist that unifies opposites and transforms our subconscious blocks back to the transcendental. Later I discovered that the Chinese characters for Ling qi are the same as the Japanese characters for Reiki. (The Japanese characters were barrowed from the Chinese and have the same meaning although the phonetic words are different) Our bodies, when we work with life force energy, can act as a bridge that unifies heaven and earth, harmonizing the heart and mind as one. In the dream, the Native American woman spirals upward like a whirling mist. Her hand position demonstrates an energetic connection with the sky above and the earth below. Working with Ling qi is transcendental, the dream conveys, as the woman ascends upward upon a spiral staircase to heaven in a sense, transforming into an angelic being and finally pure light. Through Reiki, we can allow this high vibration spiraling energy to flow through our hands and into the energy fields of others to enlighten the bodies of our clients and ourselves.
The dream also speaks of an important spiritual component of Reiki work. Life force energy is universal and transcends religious boundaries. The Native American woman (earth centered cultures) shifting into an angelic being (more modern Judeo-Christian-Muslim traditions) then pure light (direct spiritual experience) reminds us that viewing life from a higher, broader and universal perspective of dreams shows that unity is a byproduct of working with energy. It creates an opening for spiritual experience beyond separation, judgment and dualistic thinking. That Reiki, rather than being “dangerous to Christian [or other religious] spiritual health,” actually enhances and can deepen one’s personal experience of Spirit. My dreams since that fateful day have only confirmed this.

Center for Reiki Research
by William Lee Rand
A new web site has recently been launched that provides important resources for those interested in Reiki research. The site features a listing and summaries of all Reiki research studies published in peer-reviewed journals. The summaries have been produced using the Touchstone Process; a highly rigorous method of analyzing all the studies in a particular field. Its application to Reiki research is noteworthy.
The Touchstone Process was developed by the CRR staff, a group of seven doctorally prepared researchers and five nurses and is unique to the field of Complementary and Alternative Medicine. The site also includes articles on research study design, how to write case reports, documenting Reiki sessions, insurance reimbursement for Reiki sessions and the scientific basis of Reiki. A consultation service is also offered for those wanting to conduct Reiki research. In addition, the site contains detailed descriptions of the Reiki programs offered in 64 hospitals across the US.
The site is free although it is necessary to register to use the information on the site.

Reiki in a Maximum Security Prison
by William Lee Rand
I had taught Reiki in a prison in India a few years ago and had gotten so much out of it that I wanted to do more of this work. I was interested in teaching in a US prison and sent my intention out to the universe on a carrier wave of Reiki energy. After maintaining my intention steadily for several months, I began to receive letters from a man at the Southeast Correctional Center in Charleston, Missouri. He asked if we could send Reiki books, magazines and CDs to his prison library and he included instructions on how to do this. I was happy to honor his request. After getting the materials, he asked if anyone could come to teach Reiki and said there were a number of prisoners interested in attending a class.
I was glad my Reiki prayers had been answered and began the process of getting permission and setting a date. I contacted the prison chaplain and he explained how the process worked and sent all the papers I’d need to fill out.
I learned this was a maximum security prison which meant the prisoners were serving very long sentences or were in for life. This also meant they had committed some of the worst crimes. I was concerned about the men, how I’d deal with their energy and what the prison environment would be like. It felt as though I was going to be involved in a very serious experience, interacting with people for whom freedom, one of the most precious of human needs was being denied.
And at the same time, the difficulty of their situation made me feel enthusiastic about how helpful Reiki would be for them; how it could raise their spirits, heal their pain and inspire them to think of creative ways to make their time in prison more worthwhile. And for those who would eventually get out, hopefully it would help them integrate back into society more easily and provide a way for them to help others by providing Reiki sessions.
I was going to teach Reiki I&II and a date was set, but after waiting over six months, the date was canceled and I was given another date several months later. Finally the time came and I traveled to Charleston and checked into the only motel in the area. Curious about what the prison was like, I drove over to the parking lot in front of the prison entrance and looked around. There were no walls, but the prison was surrounded by high chain link fences completely covered with Concertina wire. There was a system of three fences with the middle one being electric.
On the day of class I arrived early, went through security and was given a beeper to wear. If while teaching I felt threatened, I could summon help by pushing a button.
The first day I was escorted across the yard by a volunteer. On sequent days, I was allowed to walk across the yard and to the class room entrance by myself. I was surprised that they allowed me to do this and I was even more surprised to see that some of the guards were female. But as I spoke with the guards and then eventually met the prisoners I learned that the part of the prison I was in was relatively safe. Everything was clean and I saw no bars nor barred doorways, but regular steel doors with larger than normal locks. And it did feel less negative than what I had imagined.
The prison was newly built and was divided into “houses” where the prisoners live. The lower numbered 1 and 2 “houses” were for people who had not adjusted to prison life well and were a threat to other prisoners and to themselves. The higher numbered 4 and 5 “houses” were for those prisoners who had established a record of following the rules and who got along well with everyone. In these higher numbered “houses” the prisoners were rewarded with more freedom and amenities such as microwave ovens and television in their cells. The students I taught were from houses 4 and 5.
Prison rules required that the prisoners return to their cells for a head count three times a day. Because of this, I had to teach the class in three periods of 3 hours each with one hour between each period. When I taught I was in the classroom with the prisoners without a guard being present. This felt a little ominous at first, but as I continued I became more accustom to the situation.
The men were subdued when the class first started so I started the class with introductions as a way to get the class energy moving and so I could get to know each student. They mostly shared about their interests and previous studies with healing and spiritual work. One thing many mentioned is that they were already part of other spiritual groups in the prison including Buddhist, Wicca, and Pagan groups, so the concept of Reiki was familiar to them.
After the attunement and especially after we did a self treatment, they began to be noticeably affected by the Reiki energy; they lighten up as they realized the value it had for them in their prison environment. Many of them began to open up emotionally and seemed happy about being in the class.
One man who was in prison with his brother who was also in the class expressed that he had been in prison such a long time that he had been able to work through his bitterness about being there. He said that he accepted that he was in prison and that he had done what he was accused of and deserved to be there. Another man who looked to be in his early 30’s said he had entered prison when he was 19 and had been sentenced to life plus 45 years with no chance of parole; he said this in an almost casual way without any sign of remorse.
In talking with them, one issue they mentioned having to deal with constantly was the negative energy of the prison environment and especially the negative energy coming from other prisoners. The way they had been dealing with it was to put forth effort to ward off the negative energy, often with negative energy of their own and also by withdrawing and shutting down. I showed them a more evolved way of dealing with negative energy by using the power symbol and surrounding themselves with the positive energy of Reiki. They experienced how this positive energy blocked negative energy and allowed them to remain open to positive energies and feelings. As they used the technique I could see dark layers of negative energy dissolving in their energy fields and being replaced by Reiki energy. Their feelings also became lighter and they began to smile and show amazement and appreciation.
They also liked the ability to send distant Reiki. Some mentioned how much they valued this ability as they’d be able to send Reiki to family members and this would help them feel closer to them. They also looked forward to sending Reiki into their cells to maintain a positive space and to send it to the whole prison to help improve conditions.
Another issue they expressed concern about was the possibility of getting sick because of close contact with so many other prisoners. They liked the idea that they would be able to give themselves Reiki treatments everyday and use it to build up their positive energy fields and improve and maintain their health. Another prisoner who had injured his leg and was frequently in pain was impressed that he could use Reiki to reduce the pain and heal his leg. The men seemed pleased with the class and toward the end, a feeling of group well-being and inter connectedness had developed.
I found teaching Reiki in prison to be a deeply moving experience. I came to know at least to a certain extent what it’s like for people to be in prison. And I feel fortunate that I was able to do something worthwhile by introducing Reiki to them. I hope this article will inspire others to teach Reiki in prison. If you have any questions about how to do this, please email me at center@reiki.org

Treating Stroke and other Neurological Disorder
by Mari Hall
When I was working and living in Scotland in the late eighties, I began to do research into how emotions play the biggest part in creating disharmony, that thoughts in the mind are actually secondary to the emotions. The key was to repattern a person's emotional energy, which would in turn release the thoughts. I understood that the reason affirmations did not work sometimes was that people had not done the spiritual gardening work necessary to plant these new flowers or thoughts deep into their psyches. Without the gardening, the person seemed switched off, emotionally fractured on some level.
I started using a technique I learned to repattern mentally challenged children before I learned Reiki. By incorporating a cross pattern with the use of Reiki, I could see how the body took the energy deeper into areas where there had been emotional fracturing. At first I started treating people with dyslexia this way.
What started as an idea for the treatment of common dyslexia lead to years of work with people with motor neurological problems. I discovered that dyslexia is actually like being "switched off." It usually starts with a moment or moments of emotional fracturing. Furthermore, we can be considered slightly dyslexic on many levels. The specialized integration treatment I am writing about has helped people to reconnect body, mind, and soul to experience wholeness again. Before I detail this technique, I will share some of the stories and miracles that show why this special integration treatment so useful.
Johnny’s Miracle
I was visiting a family in the countryside of Scotland. One day, their thirteen-year-old son John asked me if I had problems understanding things in school when I was little. I replied, “It is funny you should ask that, Johnny. I was just thinking how hard it was to get my mind focused on what the teacher said and what I tried to read in books. It seemed like there was a part that was missing, like a door I couldn’t go through.” It turned out that Johnny had a similar problem.
I had been doing research into using Reiki with Whole Brain Therapy. I had strong impressions of how I might treat dyslexia and other problems. I was searching for people to work with, to see if what I suspected had some validity. I explained this to Johnny and his parents. I asked Johnny if he would be interested in helping me to find a way to help other kids that had the same problem. He and his parents both agreed.
I treated Johnny once a week for one hour. Instead of having him lie on a traditional couch or massage table, I asked him where he would be comfortable. He said that if the weather was nice he had a special spot in the glen—a field that was “his,” but he was willing to share. So off we would go, hand in hand, to his spot, with a blanket and something to drink.
When I was treating him with Reiki, he would talk about what he felt, and how the energy seemed to move. He was full of insight and could talk a blue streak. During the fourth treatment, he got so quiet I thought he had fallen asleep. I asked Johnny if he was sleeping. “Nope,” he replied, “you see, I am reading this wonderful book I found in the library of my mind, Mari. I have found the doorway into understanding. It’s great in here, and there are so many books to read.”
My experience working with Johnny became the foundation for a specialized integration work I began doing with Reiki. His miracle of “finding the door” helped many other people. John is now a neurologist, practicing medicine implemented with Reiki in his clinic in western Scotland. He tells his story to the children he works with.
Sean Is Walking
I was asked to come and talk with a family on the outskirts of Edinburgh, Scotland. They had heard about my work with Johnny. Sean didn’t have dyslexia. He had suffered a massive stroke, losing his ability to walk and talk. His left side was paralyzed. His doctors had given up hope and told Sean and his family that he would never recover. When you are eighty years old, as Sean was, it is easy to believe that there is no chance to recover, but Sean and his family wanted to see if Reiki might help his problems.
Fortunately Sean could write with his right hand. It was a painstakingly difficult process, but his only way to communicate. He kept paper and pen with him all the time and had devised his own shorthand by the time I was asked to use Reiki with him. I asked him if I could use a particular process for brain integration I had used in the treatment of dyslexia. I had seen it benefit people with motor neurological problems. He replied that he had nothing to lose and everything to gain.
I worked with him five days a week for the first month. He would lie on his back while I treated his whole body in traditional Reiki positions. I then spent extra time using a special position that favored brain integration. The most notable effect was that Sean felt more connected to his body and more clear. He said he felt he was working with the Reiki and not being worked on. When I said that you are always working with the energy as you are using it, his written reply was, “Well, now I really know it from the inside out.” His family took first and second degree Reiki trainings in order to work more closely with Sean. They took turns working with him twice a day. This became quality time for Sean and his family members. When I would stop by to see his progress, they remarked that they were actually enjoying this special time with him, and were able to see how his body was changing.
He started talking in the third month, first words and then short sentences. After a few more months, a speech therapist was called in to work with Sean. We celebrated each success. I continued to treat him two to three times a month. His body became suppler, and his left arm regained some slight movement. We ran energy through his limbs and cradled his head in our hands. The right side of his brain was the side that had been traumatized, affecting the left side of his body. Extra time was spent there. We often remarked that working with Sean was like connecting the dots in a child’s activity book. He was acutely aware when a particular dot had been connected. His eyes would light up as he said, “Yes, that’s the spot.” I gave him a drawing of a human body and asked him to point to where he felt more and less alive. I asked him to show us how to work with him. He loved the integration position, as he said he could feel how the energy pushed through into other areas. He told us that his body was feeling stronger.

Reiki and Stroke
I have heard of some Reiki teachers who say that one should not treat stroke victims with Reiki or that one needs to wait a certain period of time before treating stroke victims. I don’t know what this is based on as I have only experienced positive results when treating those who have experienced a stroke. I have worked with people immediately after they have suffered from a stroke and have found the earlier you treat someone, the better, so that Reiki can support the traditional medical procedures. While I have heard many ideas about not working with some illnesses at all or waiting for some days, I have found the reverse to be true. There is nothing to fear...for fear creates our reality. I trust the process and love Reiki, and I have never experienced an adverse reaction. |
After Sean had his stroke, the family built a ramp from the back door, so that he could be wheeled into the back garden and be outside. As he started making improvement, his need to be outside became even greater. As he regained some use of his left arm, Sean started learning to push his chair using the wheels. His task, as he put it, was to get outside by himself. He was proud when he could roll his chair outside, and in the months that followed, get back into the house. Each time was a victory, celebrated and savored.
The treatments continued throughout the year and went on into the next. Both his family and Sean were convinced that there had been marked improvement and wanted to see what else would happen. Sean did first and second degree Reiki training in order to work on himself. He treated his own legs. A physical therapist had been working with Sean to keep his body from atrophying, and he too noticed the changes in Sean’s body. The doctors were also amazed at the changes, and suggested a more aggressive physiotherapeutic approach at the local center. He exercised there three times a week to strengthen his left leg as it started to come alive.
It was a beautiful day in the fall when I next drove to Sean’s house. The air was crisp and clear. I had run through in my mind the progress he had made during this time, and felt he had made many miracles. I was inspired by his tenacity. I had used Sean’s story in many of my Reiki classes as a way to bring home to the students the miracles Reiki can provide us. I pulled the car into the drive and found his empty chair at the bottom of the ramp. I looked in the back garden in Sean’s special place to see if he had been put in a chair there. No luck. I was in a panic. Where was Sean?
As I started to the house, I heard him laugh. I looked towards the door of the house, and there he was, holding onto the metal railing, a look of great satisfaction on his face. I said, “What are you doing here all by yourself, Sean?” He said, “I am practicing my surprise for the family. I can walk ever so slowly, and I want to give them this as a thank you. Don’t tell a soul.”
Sean’s birthday was November first. His family assembled for a luncheon celebration. I had been asked to join them. After a lovely meal, we all went into the garden to sit and be with each other in the beautiful fall weather. Sean said he would roll down to join us “in a shake.” He declined help, giving me a wink and saying would be along presently.
We all were talking when a hush came over the crowd. Sean walked out of the house and began walking towards us on his own. He stopped and said, “Since it’s my eighty-third birthday, I wanted to give you all a present.” What a precious gift it was to us all to see him walking. We had been taught so much about ourselves all the time we had been working with Sean. Miracles had touched us all—Sean’s triumph was the best birthday present I have ever witnessed being given.
Pat Has Come Home
I was a guest speaker at a Reiki conference held in Loveland, Colorado, a few years ago. The conference was held in a beautiful part of Colorado, at Sunrise Ranch, a property owned by a group called the Emissaries. I had been living in Europe for over twelve years and felt removed from the Reiki community in the U.S. I also had so much free time after giving my talk that I was at a loss for something to do. I seem to continually move between being and doing. Although doing seems to win out most of the time, I think my edge of learning is the actual surrender into being present.
I actually think it is our biggest challenge as people in the world to be present, to be a human being not a human doing. I was sitting there in the conference room with all this in my mind when a lovely woman approached me and struck up a conversation. Her name was Pat. During the course of our sharing, she said she had had a stroke a few years back and had felt since that she was not totally in her body. She had received a tremendous amount of therapy, both allopathic and complementary. I suggested we meet for a few integration treatments with Reiki and explained what I would be doing. She agreed.
We went into an area where massage tables had been set up, and I treated her for about an hour. After the treatment she said she felt more clearheaded, and we made an appointment to meet again the following morning for another treatment. When I saw her the next morning, she was bubbling over. She told me that she had experienced absolutely no problems walking up the stairs, and in fact had bounded up them like she would have before her stroke. She also felt as if she had slipped back into her body and was lined up again. I treated her once again the following morning, and afterwards she said she could feel her hands from the inside. She was just radiant. I showed her how she could do this treatment on herself when she was home. When I looked at her, it seemed to me that she had realigned her energy, as it all seemed even. She truly had come home in herself.
Last year at the Reiki retreat in New York I saw her again and was thrilled to hear she was fine. She had moved to be near her family and was still at home in herself. Two years of integration and living in wholeness had cemented the blessing. She has shared this technique with her students and friends. All the people who were using it had benefited from taking the time to reconnect. I think when we are given a flash of intuition, we must first use what we see; we must come into a deep understanding of the insight before teaching it to someone else. In my case, I have been using this approach for over thirteen years, and each year my understanding deepens. I offer it as a way to help; the person receiving the energy of Reiki is actually using it to heal him- or herself.
A String of Pearls
I was in San Antonio, Texas, for a book signing and teaching of a self-development course at Dancing Moon, a metaphysical bookstore with treatment rooms and classrooms in the back of the store. My friend Flute, who is a Reiki master, was waiting there to treat a woman. Flute explained that the woman had pulmonary edema and that at times her condition became critical—she swelled up so much she could hardly breathe. It seemed that her heart could not beat enough to move the fluids through her body, so they all backed up. She asked me if I had ever worked with something of this nature.
I replied that I had worked with heart problems and edema, but not together as they were presented. Her client’s problem was interesting, and I went inside myself and asked for guidance as to how I could assist in the treatment. I trust this process of asking. I do not always get an answer right away, but normally will have a flash of inspiration when it is needed. I remember sitting there signing books and talking with someone, when out of the corner of my eye I saw the client being brought into the bookstore in a wheelchair. She was so bloated she could hardly move or breathe. In my mind’s eye I saw her placed in the integration position and knew my intuition was showing me another way to use it. I excused myself and went into the treatment room. I explained to Flute and the other people who came to work on her what I had sensed and showed them the integration treatment. They agreed to give it a try, and I went back to the signing. When they came from the back room an hour later, the woman’s swelling had gone down appreciably, and her breathing was normal. It was a profound difference.
I sat for a minute with my eyes closed and asked for guidance as to why this particular treatment had been so effective. I had a vision of a strand of pearls. Each pearl represented a level of fracturing from the original source within us. By “fracturing,” I understood that the body, mind, and soul do not always work with each other; they sometimes work against each other. We basically have three captains (mind, body, and spirit) in our being not talking with each other or even at war with each other. The integration position brings them into relationship with each other, to work together. This also explained to me why, when we think we’ve done our work, when we have an issue in our lives mastered, the challenge comes back. The coming back is actually at a different level of our being. We basically spiral into ourselves. Our work is following the pearls down, one by one.
If this was the case, then this integration position was not just for dyslexia or motor-neurological problems, it was something we could use to reconnect ourselves and integrate our body, mind, and soul for the purpose of living fully. Since that moment, I have used it with almost every person I work with as an added treatment position.
How Life Supports Us
When I was teaching Reiki in Thessalonika, Greece, I was demonstrating how, when we close our hearts emotionally and/or mentally, we also shut off our energy and become energetically weaker. When we open our hearts, the energy keeps us strong because it flows through us naturally. I asked a man attending the course who was in the Australian Special Forces stationed in Greece to act this out. I asked him to remember a time he had been hurt in life and to close his heart. Our thoughts also bring the emotions associated with the event to the surface to experience. I then pushed his shoulder. He was clearly off balance; he was not grounded at all and could easily be shifted off his feet.
When I instructed him to open his heart and remember being loving, his body opened up, but when I pushed him on the shoulder, he was still weak. Normally he would have been much stronger, grounded and steady on his feet. I then said with authority, “Stand to.” He immediately came to attention, and when I pushed him on the shoulder, he was so fixed it was impossible to move him off center. I immediately asked him if he had problems with studying in school. He said yes and that often he found he wanted to turn right but would say he was turning left. I asked him if I could demonstrate the special integration position on him and then retest him. After working with him for ten minutes, he said he was more alert. I asked him to repeat the exercise of opening and closing his heart. The result was considerably different. His body was firm in tone, his eyes were more focused and bright, he was not fixed as he had been when I ordered him to stand to, yet he was very firm on his legs. The most remarkable change was the difference in the way he stood; you could see he was more comfortable in his body, yet strong in his constitution. His Special Forces friend who also came as a participant remarked that he seemed brighter, more at home in himself. Three couples in the room had children with dyslexia, one woman had a husband recovering from a stroke, and another woman had multiple sclerosis. By using the technique in the class, it helped them all to understand the feeling of being connected, having clear thoughts, and being more at home in their bodies.
I Am Not Awkward, I Am Dyslexic
In August of this year I was teaching in France. One of my students was an Englishman in his sixties. All his life he had been told he was awkward. He knew he was dyslexic and had many problems with reading and writing in school, but had no idea how much his dyslexia had impacted his life and the choices he had made thus far. He did not finish school and at sixteen left home to join the Merchant Marines. He managed to work in the building trade until his retirement. My guess, although we did not talk about it, was that he was made fun of because he was not only slow in his thinking, but also in his walking. His walk had a homogeneous presentation in that he moved his right arm with his right leg, and most of the time he made no arm movements at all. He stood heels together with his feet pointing out like a penguin. His balance was unstable. His body was also turned and bent at a funny angle. When asked to do a simple test like touching his right hand to his left knee, he could not do that because he could not find his right hand. He kept presenting his left one.
During our conversations, I was given to understand that he had grown up as the family clown. Jokes were often at his expense. When he wanted attention it was quite often given as a result of his acting unclear or confused. It was obvious he had received much of his attention in a negative way. Although he has a hard time remembering daily things, he is extremely bright and is fiercely interested in history. But emotionally and mentally he had decided that he had no personal worth, and all his value was determined in how many people he could help. He had not even put himself in the picture most of the time.
My work as a teacher and therapist is to help people turn back to their innate truth and to find ways to help them nourish their being. I talked about the technique and asked him if he would be willing to have it demonstrated on him. If he saw any results, perhaps he could continue treating himself.
In the Reiki class we all worked on him when he was on the massage table on his back. I held his head in the position as indicated in the picture; the others put their hands over the areas that were crossed. He said he could feel the energy move through him and bubble, and he saw light. After treating him for approximately thirty minutes, we asked him to stand and then to walk. We could not believe our eyes. He stood with his feet apart and very stable. He walked with his arms swinging left leg with right arm and the reverse. His body unscrewed itself, and he was also standing upright.
What a complement to his work! He continues to use Reiki with the integration technique every day. He said he knows his body is changing, and he is more peaceful. He is making changes in his approach to life, and these changes are affecting those around him. I think he will no longer allow himself to be thought of or talked about as the awkward one again.

The Integration Technique
for Others |
From Being Out of Sorts to Being Clearheaded
Sometimes I get out of sorts. It may be when I find myself in a stressful situation. It may be that I am so busy that I have not given myself enough quiet time to reconnect. I become edgy and not fully present. I become vague, forgetful, and short-tempered. Even Reiki teachers can get out of sorts, my dears; we are human after all!
To remedy the situation, I lie down and do this integration technique on myself. Within a few minutes, I am more clear and calm. I feel reconnected on all levels and more awake. There seems to be a common thread of experience in all cases where this integration technique is used; people have a sense of being fully at home in their bodies, more clearheaded, more alert, awake, and refreshed. My suggestion is this: Use it on yourself and have your own experience, then work with others. All you have to lose is being disassociated; all you have to gain is living fully!
Lie on your back and cross your ankles, left ankle over right. Cross your wrists at the top of your head, right wrist over left. Place your hands on both sides of your head. Leave yourself in this position for approximately 20–30 minutes and then change the crossing to right ankle over left and left wrist over right and give Reiki to yourself for another 20–30 minutes.
When I work with clients, I always take a client history detailing physical problems, the state of their emotions, and issues they have been dealing with lately. Part of the work I do with clients is to ask them to do simple tests in order for them to feel where they may be switched off. I watch them walk and see how the body presents itself. I may also ask them to take their hand and touch their knee on the opposite side. All this, when you have been trained, helps you to see the disharmony in the body and mind. Once they have been treated, they normally feel when there has been a shift in their energy. They will walk with more stability and feel better from the inside out. We do not tell—we give them opportunities to experience for themselves the effects of their work with Reiki. We often witness miracles.

Working with Yourself |
You may ask if this treatment will work if you have not taken a Reiki course. I think it will help. What I know is that Reiki helps the crossing technique to work at a very deep level, and gives us the opportunity to be the instrument for our intention to be of service. Because of this, it gets us out of the way for the energy to work. When we do not have Reiki, we are working with our own energy, and we sometimes are too close to be detached enough from the outcome. As a result, we can become very tired.
What I have been given to realize is that all these moments of intuition or clear insight are moments of ONEness. When we cease to demand, surrender, and are one hundred percent in the now, then life works with us. We are given answers and, yes, direction. All that life is, is a series of opportunities to get out of our own way and reconnect to all that is divine. And because life loves us enough, all we need to do is show up.
Many more people have benefited from this integration technique over the years. Each one is actually a walking miracle. When a change occurs with their healing, then things also change around them. Lives are affected by others because we are so closely intertwined. There is nothing to lose but disharmony and everything to gain. I am constantly surprised how easy and effective this technique is.

World Peace Card Meditation
Wednesday, March 17, 7:30pm
Future Dates
Wednesday, April 14, 7:30pm
Wednesday, May 12, 7:30pm
You are invited to take part in the next World Peace Card Meditations. Please mark your calendar and forward this notice to all your friends.
Thanks for Your Help!
Because so many of you forwarded this email to your friends, there have been almost 155,000 downloads of the World Peace Cards. This is a tremendous increase in the number of people using the cards. So far the total number of World Peace Card sets downloaded, received from our free offer and from our magazine has been almost 170,000! I hope you have been using your peace cards as their use brings blessings to the world as well as to you.
The next World Peace Card group meditations have been scheduled for Wednesday, March 17 at 7:30pm. This is local time in your time zone. This method has been chosen because of the special effect it produces. As people meditate in each successive time zone the energy builds like a wave which gets stronger and stronger as it circles the planet. Because of the higher dimensional nature of consciousness, the energy of peace will be transmitted for a full 24 hours and continue long after this.
Reports from those who took part in the previous meditations indicate many had powerful spiritual experiences. As they united with those taking part in the meditation a feeling of peace developed within that stayed with each for a long time. Some saw beautiful golden light surrounding the planet and others felt that a web of fear was dissipating and being replaced with trust in others and for our future.
All those who have received the cards are being asked to meditate on world peace at this time. By taking part in this group meditation, you’ll be joining thousands of people who will be using the cards to bring peace to the world. By joining together, the affect we have will be greatly multiplied. This powerful experience and will help shift the vibration of our wonderful planet into a higher state of consciousness. As you use the cards to meditate on world peace, you will be a beacon through which peace will spread around the planet which will have a positive uplifting effect on all people.
Please set aside this time to meditate with the cards. The suggested meditation period is 15 minutes, but of course you can meditate longer if you’d like to. The technique I’d like you to use is based on allowing yourself to be a beacon of peace. The World Peace Cards hold the vibration of the World Peace Grids which have been placed at spiritually significant locations and are relay stations for higher consciousness. By simply opening to their energy, you’ll become a channel for their love and peace which will flow through you to all the people on Earth. To do this, hold the cards in your hands or place them in front of you. Then simply meditate on peace.
We are entering a new era. Our entire planet including all the people and living things are moving into a place where it will be much easier to solve our problems and to create peace, prosperity and happiness for everyone. The World Peace Card meditation will quicken this process, making it easier for people to experience this new quality of higher consciousness and will provide great benefit for all people. Since this benefit will be flowing through you out to everyone on the planet, you'll be blessed by this experience as well.
Many have received the cards in the mail or in the Reiki News Magazine while others have downloaded them from our web site. If you would like additional copies of the cards, please download them using this link and print as many copies as you can use. Please feel free to give them to your friends. Also, forward this email to anyone you feel would like to take part in the meditation.

Reiki Stories
Reiki and Uterine Cancer
Six years ago while a Level Two Reiki healer I was witness to an extraordinary healing of a woman diagnosed with cancer. My Reiki Master (Colleen Chauntler of Gladstone, Australia) was staying with me at the time. A woman was brought to my home presenting a distended lower abdomen and we were told by her friends that she had been sick for some months. In the week prior to this visit she had a scan and had been told by doctors that she had a large tumour in her uterus that was probably cancerous. Surgery was planned for the following week. We decided to give her three sessions of Reiki healing throughout the week, hoping that would encourage rapid healing for her after her surgery. Rather than the usual hand positions, three of us worked on her-my Reiki Master held her hands on the patient's lower abdomen, I had my hands on her head (crown) and another Level Two healer (Sharon Honatana) was at her feet. We stayed like that for approximately an hour each session.
On the day she was to check in to the hospital I saw a large black energy in the shape of a ball and surrounded by what appeared to be sparking energy lift from her abdomen and rise up into the air. It kept rising and disappeared through the ceiling of the room. I asked if anyone else had seen it and each of the others confirmed the same thing, including the patient. She duly went on to check in to the hospital, and when they examined her they could not feel the tumour; they sent her for a scan and it had gone. She told us with great humour that the doctors were arguing and quite flustered at the result. They eventually went on to do an exploratory operation but no tumour could be found. She had therapy for the few cancer cells they did find and is fit and healthy now.
The woman believes she was healed by Satya Sai Baba and Reiki. On the night before her last session she said she dreamed she was in her car and it was teetering on the edge of a cliff. Below her was blackness; in her rear-vision mirror she could see a long road, and walking along this road was Sai Baba. He came toward her car and stood looking at her. She cried out to him to help her and he reached down and pulled her car off the edge of the cliff and placed it back on the road. Penelope (Penny) Hayward
Reiki and Prostate Cancer
With the thought of promoting Reiki, I called an assisted-living center to offer an Introduction to Reiki class with free mini-Reiki sessions. When I asked the social director if he was familiar with Reiki he said, "Let me tell you my story," and proceeded to tell me that he had been recently diagnosed with prostate cancer. His massage therapist, Reiki Level II, had been told by a psychic that he (the social director) needed to receive three treatments in close succession by three Reiki healers. I quickly set things in motion and our team performed Reiki on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday. No other treatment was given. Prior to treatment his test confirmed he was 4.0 and his doctor diagnosed that he had prostate cancer. The Monday after we completed the three treatments he was again tested. On the following Wednesday he called to say the test results showed 0.3 and that he was free of cancer. He remarked that in all of his life the test results were never that low. I am so honored to have been a part of his healing. I feel honored to be called by Reiki, a major part of my life. Phran Gacher, Stamford, Connecticut
Reiki and Heart Attacks
Without a sound, a man collapsed, sliding silently from his chair and onto the floor. People crowded around him, and one person, a Reiki Level One, began hands-on while I went into another room. I could clearly feel his heart beat. It was very faint and squishy (a technical term?).
As energy began to flow, a slightly different connection was made and I found that my heart was beating for his. That was new to me, but it added a lot of depth to Usui-Sensei's statement to "Always expect there to be oneness." The man was sitting up by the time the paramedics arrived.
Less than a week later, a friend phoned. She had just called 911; her husband was having a heart attack. His heartbeat was entirely different: fluttery and erratic, a bit like static on the radio. Again the link was made allowing my heart to beat for his. He too was sitting up when the paramedics arrived.
Similar scenes have happened over the years-similar, yet each one entirely different. Panic attacks respond in a similar manner, except that the victims' breathing and heart rate move into synch with mine. There seems to be a definite increase in panic attacks nowadays. W. Craig
Reiki and Two-Story Fall
On July 10 of this year I fell two stories onto concrete while practicing a rope rescue technique. Luckily my friends surrounded me. A friend I took Reiki I and II with immediately placed her hands on me, before I even thought about what was happening. I was able to be transported by private vehicle to the hospital, and experienced minimal pain. The emergency room physician was very surprised to see my X-rays. My left ankle was fractured and dislocated and I had suffered a T-12 compression fracture. Despite this, my ankle was not swollen and was mobile with a good pulse. I required no narcotic analgesics until transfer to a trauma facility one hour away.
Reiki, along with aromatherapy, massage, and yoga, continues to be an important part of my recovery. Thanks to Heather, my teachers, and the great Reiki masters for the great healing. Amy Fierro
