The Distant Symbol and Hands-On Healing
by William Lee Rand

In Reiki Level II classes the student is taught the Distant Symbol (HSZSN), including how to draw it, what it symbolizes, and how to use it to send Reiki to others at a distance. This is a valuable symbol. It allows sessions to be given to others anywhere and anytime and as often as you’d like. HSZSN also allows many people to send Reiki to one person at a time. This feature is often utilized by Internet Reiki groups who send out requests for Reiki, which are then responded to by everyone on the list. HSZSN also allows the practitioner to send Reiki to larger groups of people. As an example, Reiki can be sent to all the victims of an earthquake or a tsunami, to the victims of war, to world leaders, to a peace conference, or to all living things on the planet. HSZSN greatly increases the ability for Reiki practitioners to help others.

The HSZSN symbol is comprised of Japanese kanji (the characters of the Japanese language) and is actually a Japanese religious or philosophical saying. There have been various translations of this saying into the English language, resulting in some confusion about what it means. Whenever a translation is made, the accuracy is dependent upon the knowledge the translator has of the original language and of the language that the words are being translated into. Some English speaking Reiki practitioners have tried translating HSZSN by using an Japanese/English dictionary, but this process is not likely to produce anything meaningful, as the meaning of each character is affected by the characters preceding and following it. Since this is an idiomatic saying, it has its own special meaning beyond the literal meaning suggested by the individual kanji.

I had the fortunate opportunity to discuss the meaning of this symbol with two Japanese Reiki masters: Hiroshi Doi who speaks only Japanese and Hyakuten Inamoto who speaks Japanese and English and who acted as translator for Hiroshi Doi. This took place in September 2002 in Toronto, Canada while I was taking Reiki classes with each of them. Discussing this back and forth we came up with the following translation, which they agreed upon as having a satisfying degree of accuracy. “The origin of all is pure consciousness.”

Think about the profundity of this statement. Everything comes out of pure consciousness. This means all plants, animals, rocks, water, all human beings and all of their attributes, as well as all planets, stars, galaxies, space, time, energy and so forth. And since the most meaningful part of each of us is our consciousness, by focusing our attention into ourselves, it’s possible to return to the origin of all. This in fact is the primary meditation method used by Eastern traditions to reach Enlightenment—meditation on one’s own consciousness.

When giving Reiki sessions to others, the value of the sessions often is not related to the quantity of Reiki energy given, but to the quality of the energy. One theory of how Reiki works is that while it supplies the subtle energy the body needs to function, a more developed aspect of Reiki energy gives instructions to the energy field, the cells, and organs of the body about how they need to function in order to heal and to remain healthy.

Illness results when some part of the body is given unhealthy instructions on how to operate. These unhealthy instructions come from thoughts and feelings the individual is exposed to, accepts, and repeats to himself/herself either consciously or subconsciously. Unhealthy thoughts and feelings are rampant in our society; some persons are more susceptible to them than others, but all of us are bombarded with them. Experiencing a traumatic event can cause one to become more vulnerable to unhealthy thoughts and feelings, which may then become lodged deep in the psyche and have a more powerfully detrimental affect. These unhealthy thoughts and feelings direct the life force or ki, telling it what to do. In Reiki, this unhealthy ki is called byoki.

One way Reiki heals is to give the ki that is already present new healthy instructions, which in turn instruct the cells and organs on how to operate. This concept is validated by scientific studies demonstrating that, rather than chemistry being the main governing factor in health, it is the electrical and electromagnetic fields that surround the cells and organs that determine how they function. And it’s not the strength of the fields, which are very small, but the information they convey that causes the healing. When miraculous healings take place, it is likely they are caused by a very highly refined and subtle field of energy containing a specific combination of frequencies. These frequencies reach into the deepest levels of consciousness, telling the energy field and the cells and organs what to do to create healing. This could include specific types of wisdom, forgiveness, and insight that affect the energy field itself and instruct the tissues to function on extraordinary levels to create the miraculous.

From this we can see that it is not so much the energy that heals, as the type of consciousness the energy contains. With this in mind the definition of HSZSN takes on greater significance. HSZSN is working from the wisdom of pure consciousness. It is therefore capable of manifesting the necessary level and specific types of consciousness necessary to heal the unique conditions of the individual.

This is why HSZSN can be of great value when working hands-on. It can act like a homing device, directing Reiki to go to the original cause which could be in this life or a past life to go to higher dimensions if necessary or anywhere it’s needed. It can also more effectively create the necessary energy including the right levels and types of consciousness to provide the unique instructions needed by our bodies, minds, emotions and energy fields to deeply heal. Here is a technique you can use on yourself and others.

  1. Think of an issue you want to heal, or that the person you’re working with wants to have healed.
  2. Use Reiji ho, saying a prayer and asking to be guided to the best area to place your hands to heal this issue. Follow your guidance and go there, knowing that wherever you place your hands will be right.
  3. Draw the HSZSN on each hand and place your hands on the area you’re guided to. Be willing to change hand positions during the process when you feel compelled to do so.
  4. Repeat this affirmation/prayer. HSZSN, HSZSN, HSZSN I now ask Reiki energy to go to the original cause of (name issue) and instruct the energy field and the cells and organs of the body to heal completely on all levels of existence.
  5. Add any additional symbols you feel guided to use.
  6. Continue with the session until you’re guided to close.
  7. Close the session with a power symbol intending that the session is sealed and that if additional healing is necessary, it will take place at exactly the right time.
  8. Follow your guidance concerning the healing of the issue and repeat the session once or more each day.

Reiki is an amazing practice that allows us to contact higher levels of consciousness to heal and balance our bodies and our lives. Let us give thanks for the amazing benefits that continue to flow to us through this wonderful gift.

Western and Japanese Styles of Reiki
by William Lee Rand

The Western style of Reiki was created by Mrs. Takata when she began practicing and teaching in Hawaii in the late 1930’s. Because of World War II (which the US entered after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, Hawaii in 1941), there was a negative sentiment toward anything Japanese. This may be one reason she chose not to teach the Japanese techniques she learned from Hayashi Sensei. Another reason may be that she didn’t think the western mind could comprehend the Japanese style. The style she taught was a combination of a simplified form of one of the Japanese techniques along with a hand placement style that she created herself. Her style is effective and offers us a variation from what is taught in Japan.

The Takata or Western style is based mainly on the systematic use of a standard hand position system Takata called the foundation treatment. This is a much-simplified version of what she learned from Hayashi. It included only seven hand positions—four hand positions over the torso and three positions on the head. (See “How Hawayo Takata Practiced and Taught Reiki,” by Marianne Streich, Reiki News Magazine, Spring 2007.) Takata used intuition to discover the location of the cause of a particular condition and gave additional Reiki to those areas after completing the foundation treatment. She also advocated giving many treatments to achieve success.

Because Takata didn’t allow her students to take notes, nor did she offer any handouts or written material, the nature and historical account of her foundation treatment changed after she passed. Additional hand positions were added and the use of one’s intuition in discovering the cause wasn’t always taught. Over time, many styles of Reiki developed; many of which claim to be the same as the way Takata practiced, and some even claiming to be the same as Usui Sensei had practiced, even though they are much different. (The material for the article referenced above came from interviews with Takata’s students and from the two biographies that have been published.)

However, the important thing is that her style is effective. It is a logical, systematic method that follows the same pattern for every client. By treating the torso and head, the most important organs of the body receive Reiki. In addition, a reservoir of Reiki energy is built up within the body and energy field that continues to nurture and promote health and well-being after the treatment is over. Takata’s method of using one’s intuition to determine the location of the cause of specific conditions is most likely a simplified form of Reiji ho, which according to her diary, she learned from Hayashi Sensei.

The original Japanese style created by Usui Sensei requires the student to spend more time in practice so as to develop his/her ability in using the various intuitive methods. Also, the Japanese style emphasized the student receiving repeated Reiki attunements or reiju’s, which over time strengthened Reiki energy.

It is interesting to note that after World War II, Reiki went underground in Japan. It was practiced in secret by the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai who very rarely accepted new members. Because of this, Japanese citizens who wanted to learn Reiki went to Hawaii, the US mainland, and Canada to take classes, or learned from Western teachers who traveled to Japan. Most Japanese Reiki teachers combine the Western Takata style with concepts and methods they were able to learn from their research into the Japanese style. But the attunement and lineage in their systems remain Western. Some Japanese teachers do not openly reveal this fact, allowing students who take their “Japanese” Reiki to believe they have an original form. Fortunately the Hayashi style, including the lineage and attunement method, has been preserved and is currently taught by Tadao Yamaguchi’s school of Reiki called Jikiden Reiki. (He learned from his mother who in turn studied with Hayashi).

Many of the Japanese techniques were made available in the West through research by Frank Arjava Petter and Hiroshi Doi. Frank Arjava received his information from former Gakkai members and through some discussion with Mrs. Koyama, a former Gakkai president. Hiroshi Doi is actually a Gakkai member, but he has deliberately refrained from accepting the official Shinpiden (similar to the Western Reiki Master) level of training so he can teach the techniques outside of the Gakkai. The part of the training that isn’t available is the attunement. The attunement or reiju is available only if one becomes a Gakkai member, which is almost impossible to do. However, not to worry, Reiki exchanges between Gakkai members and Western Reiki practitioners have determined that the original Japanese style and the Western style of Reiki are similar in terms of the strength of Reiki channeled by practitioners.

The Japanese style typically involves using specific hand placements unique for each client. The placements are determined by intuitive methods and based on the client’s specific needs at the time of treatment. Two techniques are usually employed; Byosen scanning, a method of using the sensitivity in one’s hands to discover where the person is in need of Reiki, and Reiji ho, a method in which one receives intuitive guidance about where to place the hands. In addition, there are other techniques such as Gassho, a meditation technique, Gyoshi ho, a method of sending Reiki with one’s eyes, Kenyoku, a method for cleansing one’s body and energy field, Enkaku Chirhyo, the distant healing technique, Koki ho, healing with the breath, and others.

The Western and Japanese styles of Reiki complement each other. The Western is more of a left brained, logical, systematic style anyone can practice immediately. The Japanese style is more intuitive and one in which skill is developed over time. In the Reiki Level I and II classes taught by the ICRT, both methods are taught and there are many other teachers who teach both methods. We are fortunate to have access to both systems as their combination requires balanced development within the student and adds greater breadth to one’s Reiki practice.

Growing Whole With Reiki
by William Lee Rand

This is an excerpt from the complete article that appears in the Spring edition of the Reiki News Magazine.

An inevitable fact of life is that as soon as we’re born, we start getting older. When we’re young, most welcome this process as increasing age brings opportunities for greater freedom including an ever growing number of activities allowing us to be more involved in the exciting process of life. These activities can involve being able to go further from home on your own, starting school, making new friends, getting your first bicycle, dating, getting a drivers license, going to college, getting a job, getting your own place, getting married and so forth. But somewhere in our 20’s many began to think that getting older may not be entirely good. The 30 th birthday is often a milestone indicating that we’re no longer young and the process of getting older has shifted from a desirable experience into something uncomfortable. After this it’s all down hill. The decline is slow at first, but as we pass 40, then 50 and then oh my God, 60 we find ourselves having to deal with the fact that we’ve become an “old gal or guy.” This process brings with it a slowing down in the pace of our lives and often a decrease in self worth as we find society doesn’t value old people - or at least that’s the way it has been in the past.

The baby boom generation is composed of those born from 1946 to 1961 and includes 79 million people. This generation is the result of the largest increase in birth rate the US has ever experienced. (This process also took place in many other countries) It began at the end of World War II when returning soldiers decided to marry and start families. This group represents 26% of current US population and all of them are in their late 40’s, 50’s and 60’s. (A recent survey indicates 80% of our readers are boomers)

Early boomers grew up in the 60’s in the midst of the civil rights movement, the Vietnam War and wide spread discontent. It was a time of Cultural Revolution when the status quo was openly questioned. Rock and Roll was a new and developing formof music that defined the times and supplied the movement with the emotional energy it needed with its wild beat and irreverent iconoclastic protest lyrics. Growing up during this time resulted for many Boomers in the abandonment of established values and open experimentation with things that had formerly been taboo. The hippy lifestyle, Woodstock, free love, drugs and war protests were an expression of this new found freedom. The realization that we didn’t have to be like our parents and we could free ourselves from the restrictions of cultural conditioning was a great awakening that created new possibilities for what we could do and be.

As boomers age, it’s possible to use this same freedom to continue defining who we are and recreate what it means to grow older. Growing older doesn’t have to affect usthe same way it affected our parents. If we are conscious of the choices available to us and allow Reiki to guide us in how we choose to live our lives, we can experience an extended midlife in which we retain much of the flexibility, health, activity level and excitement about life we had in the past for an extended period of time. Compared to our parents, it’s possible for those in their 50’s to be more like how their parents were in their mid to late 30’s and 60 to be more like your parents 40. At the same time we’re younger than our parents were at the same age, we have the benefit of the life lessons we’ve learned from having lived so long. In this way, we can do what Bob Seger said in one of his lyrics “live like a young man with the wisdom of an old man.”

If we’ve paid attention to our life experiences and learned the lessons they’ve offeredus, then we’ve grown a great deal and because of this, it’s possible for us to live our lives with a greater feeling of self-confidence and meaning than ever before. We can do what Richard Leider and David Shapiro indicate is possible in their book, Claiming Your Place at the Fire and “stoke the wisdom gained in the first half of life to burn with a brighter sense of purpose in the second half . . . . ascend, rather then descend . . . live one’s life on purpose . . . and embrace the deepest expression of who we are.” During the second half of life, rather than aging in any previous sense of the word, it’s possible for us to grow more whole.

The ability to achieving this extended midlife of health, well-being and purposefulness is based on attitude, wise health choices and the focused use of your Reiki skills.

According to gerontologist, Dr. Alex Comfort, 75% of aging has to do with ones mental image of how one is supposed to act and be as one gets older. This image has been created by negative cultural stereotypes that make those who have accepted them feel embarrassed about doing things they actually could do, but don’t because according to the stereotype, someone their age isn’t supposed to be that active. This negative mental conditioning becomes a self fulfilling process. As people accept this limiting image of aging, they slow down, their bodies don’t get the exercise they need to be healthy, and because of this, their muscles weaken, their heart and lungs loose capacity, their organs don’t get the oxygen and nutrients they need and they in fact become in reality the picture of aging that they accepted. This is the model followed by previous generations, but it’s not one we need to follow.

Operation Cancelled after Reiki!
Last year I had a desperate telephone call from a concerned husband. His wife had been suffering from severe neuralgia pains in her face for six years. She suffered this pain 24 hours a day and in the course of the six years she had several operations on her face to freeze the nerves to no avail. The pain continued and even the strongest painkillers could not subdue the pain. Her husband brought her to my Reiki clinic on a Friday morning. She was due to have a "brain operation" at Groote Schuur Hospital on the Monday morning.

Due to the severity of the pain, I did not have any hope of stopping the pain, my only purpose was to just help her relax and not to fear this pending operation. I worked through her chakras and spent a long time with her. When I completed the Reiki treatment, I had a "flash" reminder of the teachings of my Reiki Master regarding the extension of the fingers. I then returned my attention to her face on the side where she had this constant pain. I "extended" my fingers to the inside of her face, bone, nerves and flesh and actually felt a small ridge and worked on that ridge for approximately 2 minutes until the ridge vanished. I felt a tremendous amount of "energy" pouring into her face. I asked her how the pain was. Her reply: "The pain is gone", and she burst into tears. I called her husband to the therapy room where the three of us prayed together to say thank you. The operation was cancelled and the pain never returned again. She is still in contact with me. She only had the one Reiki treatment. To me this was truly a miracle! I've experienced many healings but this one beats them all. Reiki master, Sonia Carlile

Reiki Heals Flu
I had a wonderful experience sending long distance Reiki to a friend in Florida. She thought she had the flu. When I was going over her throat chakra, I got two messages. I was told by guidance that the reason she was sick was because she was thinking of family loss. I was also told that she needed to journal her feelings about it or verbalize them to her boyfriend. This was very powerful information thru the Reiki experience. I got the reason for the illness and the remedy to heal her self. When I told her the information I had gotten, it clicked with her. She began verbalizing her feelings towards her loss to her boyfriend. She instantly started feeling better on an emotional and physical level. I was very grateful for this Reiki experience. I have been practicing for about a year now. Cristi Earnshaw

Reiki heals Insomnia
A lady of 57 years and suffering from insomnia for 13 years learned Reiki One. After a week she phoned me and told me she started sleeping better without medicine. A man of 60 years learned Reiki One who had insomnia for the last 30 years. After 2 weeks he called me and told me he was feeling fresh during the day and after 2 weeks started sleeping better and wants to learn Reiki Two. My mom aged 85 years started sleeping better after taking Reiki One. Anjna Brahmbhatt

My Daughter's Migraine
I am a Reiki Master and a couple of months ago my daughter came down with an unbearable migraine. Unfortunately we had run out of her prescription migraine medicine. So I ran to the drugstore to get it refilled. By the time I got home her migraine was full-blown. Her eyes were slightly crossed and unfocused. Her speech was slurred. She felt nauseous. I gave her medicine and told her to lie down on the floor on a couch mattress.

About 45 minutes later the migraine had not let up as she had taken her medicine too late. I felt so helpless. I too used to get unbearable migraines and often had to be taken to the hospital for treatment. I couldn't bear to see her suffer so! Then she asked me to put my hands on her head. I activated the power symbol and said a prayer to my guides and helpers. I imagined healing energy pouring from my hands into her head. About 20 minutes later she asked me to put my hands on her tummy, which still felt queasy, but her headache had diminished. I thought it was probably because her meds had finally kicked in.

About ten minutes later her migraine kicked in again and she asked me to put my hands on her head again. I did so and very shortly afterwards she said her migraine was completely gone! She was able to roll over and slip into a peaceful sleep after giving me a big hug. I then realized that I was an effective channel for the Reiki energy after all and I felt deeply humbled and filled with gratitude. Sincerely, Cindy Baecher, Indiana
