Treating the Reproductive Area
by William Lee Rand

The reproductive organs are an important area to treat. Yet, often go untreated because practitioners know it is inappropriate to touch the genitals and even treating with the hands in the air above is often considered inappropriate as well. However, there is a hand position that will effectively treat this area without inappropriately touching the genitals.

The reproductive area often holds unconscious shame and guilt. In many cultures and especially in the west, sexuality is outwardly stimulated by movies, music, advertising, magazines, clothing and so forth, but at the same time, we’re told by religious and moral “authorities” that sex is bad and we should be ashamed of our sexual thoughts and feelings as well as our sexual acts. Also, children are often told that the genital area is bad. They’re told not to touch it and that it is a nasty and forbidden area.

Yet, sexual energy can be very strong. All this results in strong feelings of shame and guilt that are stored in the reproductive area and ignored to the point that their existence is denied. This means that most people are unaware that these feelings are present.

The unhealed feelings of sexual assault and rape are also stored in this area and locked in place by the denial mechanism that was likely already present. Feelings of this nature are often filled with tremendous fear, anger, self loathing, low self esteem, distrust of others and great shame.

Because of the strong feelings of shame that develop in this area from a young age, it tends to become the shame and guilt storage area where non-sexual feeling of shame and guilt are also stored.

Even though most people are not aware of these feelings, they continue to exist and will have a significant affect on the functioning not only of sexuality and the reproductive processes including sexual function and fertility, but also can affect other areas of the body, the personality and ones spiritual life as well.

Takata sensei felt that the reproductive area was where the cause of breast cancer is located in many women and mentioned at least one breast cancer healing that took place by using this position.

Sexuality is associated with the second chakras which is also located in this area. The second chakra is not only associated with sexual pleasure but with pleasure of all kinds. Having a healthy second chakra will make life more enjoyable and help ground all your activities in pleasurable feelings.

As you can see, there are many valuable reasons for treating this area. Below is the hand position for treating the reproductive organs, as well as the bladder. This is Mrs. Takata’s torso position number 4. I highly recommend using this position when giving a standard treatment and also using it when you’re guided to treat the reproductive area.

Reiki and Hospice
by Janny E. Adkins, RN, BS, HTP, HNC

This is an excerpt from the complete article that appears in the spring edition of the Reiki News Magazine.

It has been more than ten years since I took my first Reiki class, and I have used Reiki in all aspects of my life, every day since. My life is so much richer for it that I simply cannot imagine my world without this valuable life tool. I used Usui and Karuna Reiki ® in a very specific way over a period of two years in my professional role with one of the largest and oldest hospice programs in Florida. I am a Registered Nurse, and I functioned as a Community Educator for hospice.

As a community educator I provided hospice information to physicians, nurses, patients and families. I discovered Reiki could be used in many situations to assist me in meeting job requirements and in creating a more peaceful and compassionate environment for the patients and their families. Reiki also helped me function as a good colleague and hospice team member.

Understanding Hospice
Unless you have been involved with hospice, it is difficult to imagine the level of complexity, the depth of emotion, and the degree of stress associated with it from both the patients and families' perspective and that of hospice staff. The importance and usefulness of Reiki becomes highly significant in such a climate.

Often I was the first person from the hospice team to meet and talk with a patient and family after the physician had informed them that cure of the disease was no longer an appropriate goal. One of my responsibilities was to determine if the patient and family were appropriate for admission to hospice. I then gave them the information they needed so that they could decide if hospice care was appropriate for them. I also assessed the patient and family’s physical, emotional and spiritual needs. As you can imagine, switching goals of care from cure to palliative (controlling symptoms and focus on quality of life in lieu of cure) is often viewed as a failure. It was critical that I be a good listener, observer, and problem solver.

From a nursing perspective, anything that can help me be fully present, provide excellent nursing assessment skills, and be more compassionate and caring is invaluable. I wanted families to understand the unique hospice goals of care, allaying fears, and offering hope, albeit a redefined kind of hope. This redefined hope was extremely important, and required a sensitive balance. Sometimes it seemed a daunting task. But with Reiki it became easier for me.

Reiki in the Parking Lot
When my hospice colleagues in the admissions office dispatched me to see a patient, I always spent a few minutes in my car before going into the hospital. Sitting quietly, I would close my eyes, say my prayers and align with Universal Light and Love. My intention was to be of service. I activated the Power symbol to increase the power of Reiki and to focus energy on the upcoming visit. I placed the Power symbol over each of my chakras. This increased my energy of light and love. To clear my mind, I used the Mental/ Emotional symbol. This symbol helped me be more mindful of resources, a more accurate observer and more effective communicator, all crucial to the quality of experience for the patient's family and to all involved in the patient's care.

The final step before leaving my car was activation of the Distant Healing symbol. This sacred symbol carries the energy of divine consciousness. It can be expressed with the familiar statement, “ We Are All One.” I used this symbol so that the Reiki energy would go ahead of me into the hospital room and help create an environment conducive to the best outcome for the visit. With this final step, I was then ready to go into the hospital for my scheduled time with the patient and family.

Reiki Boosts Confidence:
Before I entered the hospital room, I would stop for a moment to again consciously activate the Power symbol to focus my presence in the moment. When I entered the room, I was confident that I could be fully present and available to look, listen, and provide appropriate hope. Reiki gave me confidence that I could support the patient and the family, have unconditional regard for them, be more compassionate and kind and help them to begin the process of redefining hope.

In healthcare today, it is relatively easy to become distracted, overworked, and overburdened by the volume of paper work and the sheer number of patients and families assigned. Sometimes we forget that there is always something we can do, even when a cure is not possible. In Reiki I discovered an invaluable tool to assist my focus and awareness, mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. . . . .

End of Life and Reiki
I have been with many patients when they have made their transitions. The majority of those death experiences were through my professional work with hospice. As a nurse I was always mindful of informed consent and lack of policy and procedure to support using Reiki as a nursing intervention. Even though in most instances I was not able to give the patients the experience of Reiki, I learned early on the value of using it on myself.

Nevertheless, I was gifted with other opportunities to use Reiki to support someone experiencing the death process. Harry was one of those gifts. He called me to come to his home to do a Reiki session. He had experienced Reiki while he was stationed in Hawaii and several other times recently. A friend of the family who was a client of mine had given him my name. I visited him as a Certified Holistic Nurse and a Reiki Master.

Harry told me that he was ready to die. He believed he had lived a wonderful life. He had no regrets. He was concerned about his family watching him slowly deteriorate. Harry asked me to come and help him “slip away” as he phrased it.

I talked with him about his expectations and his family’s expectations. I shared with them that Reiki would bring a sense of peacefulness and relaxation at a minimum. Beyond that no one can really predict. I also shared with them my belief that healing always happens at some level with Reiki. When the body cannot be healed, the mind, the emotions and spirit can.

I arrived at Harry’s home and performed my parking lot ritual in the driveway. I activated all the Usui and Karuna Reiki ® symbols that I had learned, prayed and asked for the highest good to be manifested. Again, I used the Power symbol on my own body.

Harry’s hospital bed was in the living room, looking out over the Gulf of Mexico. He had a breathtaking panoramic view of white sand beach and emerald green water. The sun was preparing to set, creating a surreal light that streamed through the floor to ceiling windows. Many family and friends were gathered around him.

I pulled a chair up to his bedside, and Harry and I talked a bit. He was very weak, but aware. He said he had no pain. I put some soft music on the little portable CD player that I had brought with me and lit a candle.

I explained the logistics of the session to Harry and told him not to worry aboutfalling asleep. I encouraged him to go ahead and allow the Reiki energy to flow into him. This was his time to receive. I thanked him for the honor of sharing this time with him. He squeezed my hand.

The energy of that Reiki session was intense. A few seconds after I began the session, in my minds eye, I saw one of the Karuna Reiki ® symbols. This symbol is associated with the flow of life and the process of letting go. It brings peace into the now moment and helps free one from worry. It is about trust. It was as if the room were filled with rainbows. Harry drifted off to sleep with a smile on his face.

The session lasted about 40 minutes. I still recall the presence of peace thatpermeated the room. I left Harry still smiling with his eyes closed. The family was eager to speak with me. I spent another 30 minutes talking with them. They loved Harry very much and were grateful for the visit.

I arrived home around 8 PM. I was walking in the door when my cell phone rang. It was Harry’s daughter telling me that Harry had died about ten minutes after I left. Harry’s original request for Reiki to help him “slip away” had happened. I believe the Karuna Reiki ® symbol that I saw helped create the peace and trust he needed. And the smile? Who knows what Harry was seeing in his mind’s eye, or thinking, or feeling that brought a smile to his face at thatparticular moment. How blessed we would all be to make our transitions with a smile when the time comes.

Poem by a Nursing Home Patient

"This poem was found in the hospital bedside locker of an old lady after her death
and speaks for itself. All we know about its origin is that it was rescued by Mrs.
T. Cowan of Highgate Hill (an area of London, England) who does geriatric nursing.

What do you see nurses, what do you see?
Are you thinking when you are looking at me?
A crabby old woman, not very wise
Uncertain of habit, with far-away eyes,
Who dribbles her food and makes no reply
When you say in a loud voice, "I do wish you'd try."
Who seems not to notice the things that you do
And forever is losing a stocking or shoe.
Who, unresisting or not, lets you do as you will
With bathing and feeding, the long day to fill.

Is that what you're thinking? Is that what you see?
Then open your eyes Nurse, you are looking at me!

I'll tell you who I am as I sit here so still,
As I rise at your bidding, as I eat at your will.
I'm a small child of ten with a father and mother,
Brothers and sisters who love one another.
A young girl of sixteen with wings on her feet
Dreaming that soon now a lover she'll meet.
A bride soon of twenty, my heart gives a leap,
Remembering the vows that I promised to keep.

At twenty-five now, I have a young son of my own
Who needs me to build a secure, happy home.
A woman of thirty, my young now grown fast,
Bound to each other with ties that should last.
At forty, my young sons, now grown, will be gone,
But my man stays beside me to see I don't mourn.

At fifty, once more, babies play around my knee,
Again we know children, my loved one and me.
Dark days are upon me, my husband is dead.
I look to the future, I shudder with dread,
For my young are all busy rearing young of their own
And I think of the years and the love that I've known.

Reiki Story

A Little Girl Recovers Her VoiceIn mid 2006 an associate told me about a little girl her sister was in the process of adopting. Maggie (not her real name), who was at this time 5 years old, had been sexually abused much of her young life. My associate shared with me that while

Maggie suffered a number of emotional problems related to her abuse, her greatest physical problem was that she had been diagnosed with Human Papillomavirus (HPV). She had "lesions" located in her throat and believed to involve the vocal cords. Maggie could not speak above a hoarse whisper. More often then not this hoarse whisper faded away to no voice at all.

This was another source of emotional torment for Maggie. She was often made fun of at school. Many times, after I met Maggie, she would whisper in my ear that she had no friends, no one would play with her because she could not talk.

I told my associate about Reiki (I was a level two with very little experience at that time) and offered to give Maggie a treatment when the adoption was finalized if her "new" parents would agree. To my surprise they did. Not having had any experience working with a child I insisted the mother and the aunt remain in the room and decided to do a full body treatment, only because I didn't really know what else to do.

Our first session was a strange one. Within minutes Maggie appeared to be asleep. Her stomach began to roll back and forth like huge waves, over and over, swelling to the size of a small melon each time the "roll" reached her solar plexus area. She clenched and unclenched her little hands, her legs were restless, and she whimpered and made tormented faces. I whispered to the mother "shall I stop". The mother urged me to continue. The session lasted approximately 20 minutes.

Afterwards Maggie seemed refreshed and eager to have a drink. She was not at all frightened. Over the next several months I gave Maggie many treatments. Many times she would head for my Reiki table as soon as she walked in, crawling up without assistance, impatient to get started. In the beginning she did display a little of the strange activity of the first session but after that she lay peacefully, apparently enjoying her sessions. Maggie would always go into a sleep like state as soon as the session began with me working at the head area. Every time she would reach up, take hold of my hands and pull them towards her throat area. I sensed she wanted me to keep them there which I did. After each session Maggie would stand up on the table and jump into my arms giving me a big hug and a big smile and then she was off to play. If asked what she felt she would say only, it’s warm and com-for-ti-ble.

We saw improvement here and there in Maggie's over all behavior. She was happier. But still could not speak above a whisper. I was becoming discouraged. Along with the Reiki we sent out prayer requests all over the country. Then on Christmas Day 2006 I was out of state visiting family when Maggie's mommy called and said "there is someone here that wants to speak with you". My heart leapt for I just knew instantly that we had a Christmas miracle. Maggie could talk! I was hearing her voice for the first time. Still a little hoarse but over the following weeks her voice became stronger and stronger. Until today, over a year later, she talks non stop.

After Maggie's voice returned, tests showed the lesions were still there. The doctors made little comment about the voice returning saying "this happens sometimes". Maggie was scheduled for surgery to have the lesions removed in May. During the interval the lesions were watched.

Reiki sessions continued, but not as often for Maggie had become impatient with Reiki. I was now her best friend and she was more interested in playing. Prayer requests continued.

The day of the surgery came and Maggie was taken into the hospital, prepped for surgery, and another scan to know just where the lesions were. Very shortly the surgeon walked out and announced, "Maggie won't be having surgery, you can take her home as soon as she wakes up" The lesions were gone! Pictures showed a smooth clean throat, not the angry red throat covered with lesions as before. Maggie now refers to herself as "a miracle kid". She still has some behavior and emotional problems caused by the abuse but she has come a long long way. Occasionally she asks for Reiki. She seems to know when she needs it. Betty Barden Gila
