Reiki and the Holiday Season
by William Lee Rand

The spiritual and religious ceremonies that are being celebrated around the world at this time of year remind us of the universal nature of Reiki and how it can work to increase the spiritual experience for members of all religions and spiritual groups.

While there are the popular methods of expression of each religion, each has a deeper more evolved or mature level of understanding that isn’t always expressed by the main group, but is practiced often by individuals or by smaller groups or denominations within the religion or spiritual path. When looking at the highest teachings of each religion, we find that the principles they promote are really very similar. These include honoring free will, love, compassion and forgiveness.

It is these higher teachings which if honored within ones own religion or spiritual path and recognized within all others that would more quickly bring about peace on earth. These higher teachings also make up the basic essence of Reiki and therefore, this is one of the reasons Reiki is such a harmonizing force between all people on earth.

During this sacred time of year, let us honor and express our highest spiritual principles at the same time we acknowledge their presence in others regardless of their religious or ethnic background.

Below is a list of some of the religious and spiritual celebrations taking place around the world.

December 2006

3, 10, 17, 24 Advent – Christian A time of preparation for observing the birth of Jesus Christ. Advent begins on the Sunday nearest November 30 and is the beginning of the Christian worship year.  Advent is observed with the lighting of advent candles, display of wreaths, and special ceremonies. Advent also anticipates the coming again to earth of Jesus Christ. The season continues through December 24

8 Bodhi Day  (Rohatsu) - Buddhism Buddhist celebration of the time when Prince Gautama took his place under the Bodhi tree, vowing to remain there until he attained supreme enlightenment.

16-23 Hanukkah - Jewish Festival of Lights. It commemorates the Maccabean recapture and rededication of the Jerusalem Temple in 165-164 b.c.e. Special readings and praise songs focus on liberty and freedom. The eight candle Menorah is lighted

22 Yule – Wicca/Neo Pagan. A Norse pagan celebration of the winter-born king, symbolized by the rebirth of the sun often including a feast which continues until the Yule log is burned up in the hearth.

25 Christmas – Christian Celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. Observed by prayers, exchanging of gifts, and family parties.

26 Zarathosht Diso - Zoroastrian anniversary of the death of Prophet Zarathushtra.

29 Hajj begins - Islam pilgrimage rites at Mecca on 7-12th days of month of Dhu al-Hajja.

30 Waqf al Arafa (Hajj Day) - Islam observance day during Hajj when pilgrims pray for forgiveness and mercy.

31 Eid al Adha – Islam Feast of Sacrifice. The most important feast of Islam. It concludes the Hajj and is a three-day festival recalling Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to Allah.

Reiki and The Burning Bowl
Ceremony
by Colleen Benelli

This is an excerpt from the complete article that appears in the winter edition of the Reiki News Magazine.

Introduction
The New Year is upon us and offers the promise that we can leave behind that which no longer serves us, and it gives us the opportunity to begin fresh and new. Winter will always bring the North, the cycle on the Medicine Wheel that compels us to look at our core, to give us the chance to release unwanted conditions in our life, to die to the old self, and make room for our new beginnings. Many of us can feel the need to heal through releasing old patterns of some kind. It may be a quiet tap we can hear, and it may be the loud and obvious need for change.

Reiki offers gentle and easy healing when we listen to those taps on the shoulder. Our Reiki Guides whisper in our ears and invite us to grow and offer their help. They participate in our healing efforts according to what we ask for help with. The clarity with which we ask creates the possibility for our Guides to help us manifest what we ask for.

A Reiki Ceremony can open us so we can listen to our hearts and gain clarity. We can then focus on our true intentions and ask for help from our Reiki Guides in a clear and powerful way. A Reiki Burning Bowl Ceremony is a fire ceremony designed to help us listen, become clear in our intentions, release the old habits that get in the way of those intentions, and bring in new habits that can help us accomplish our intentions.

Thich Nhat Hahn teaches us, “If we face our unpleasant feelings with care, affection, and nonviolence, we can transform them into the kind of energy that is healthy and has the capacity to nourish us.”

What is a Burning Bowl Ceremony with Reiki?
The Burning Bowl ceremony is a style of fire ceremony that has been a tradition of the Unity Church for about 50 years. According to Rev. Mary Lacalle, a Unity minister who officiates at Burning Bowl ceremonies, "This ritual provides a sacred way to release old, unwanted conditions or events in our lives and clears the way for new beginnings…It’s a very freeing experience that I look forward to every year."

The Reiki Burning Bowl ceremony involves using Reiki while writing the negative conditions that you would like to release from your life on a piece of paper, the paper is then burned in the bowl, which turns your prayers to smoke and sends them to the Creator on the Reiki Bridge of Light. Its purpose is to release old patterns, beliefs or experiences, or anything that impedes you from realizing your true self. By sending the old unwanted conditions up to the Creator in the smoke, you clear the way for beginnings. Then you can focus your attention on what you would like to create in your life, write those intentions on paper, burn that paper, and send your prayers to the Creator.

Using Reiki to empower you and the Burning Bowl ceremony invites the conscious loving universe to the ceremony to assist you. Reiki can help you focus on your enlightened heart to see what is truly in your way of living your best life. It helps you become still so that you can hear your authentic self and create intentions that are meaningful and filled with purpose. Reiki will also assist you with your commitment to your intentions by giving you gentle reminders from your Reiki Guides throughout the year.

There is a place where words are born of silence,

A place where the whispers of the heart arise.

Rumi

I use Reiki and Burning Bowl Ceremonies as a healing tool for many different reasons and I adapt it according to my need. Sometimes it is a group ceremony, sometimes I use it for myself, and sometimes I use it for a client during a Reiki treatment.

Here are a few reasons to hold a Reiki Burning Bowl Ceremony.

I have had Burning Bowl Ceremonies at a rehearsal dinner before a wedding. The couple burns what they are leaving behind from their single life, what they do not want to take into the marriage. The wedding ceremony then is clear and open for the couples new vows and intentions to be brought forth.

I have used this ceremony as a rite of passage for birthdays, change of job or career, graduations and childbirth. It is also a great ceremony for a teenagers 16 th birthday to let go of childish ways and bring in the new age of maturity.

This ceremony can help with ending of relationships; releasing people or events we have an unhealthy attachment to, troubling world events, sadness, childhood trauma, accidents, or the loss of a pet.

Sadly, one of the reasons I have used the Reiki Burning Bowl Ceremony lately is for clients, friends and myself to heal from the death of a loved one. I have had each person burn away the hard memories of the passing, and ask for the return of their loving memories.

This ceremony is also perfect for New Years resolutions as I describe later in the article.

There are many reasons to use Reiki and a Burning Bowl Ceremony. The format is always the same, but it can be modified to fit your purpose.

The Burning Bowl
I made the Reiki Burning Bowl that I use most often for my ceremonies. I use it for individuals or small groups of people. It was an easy craft project that was fun and inexpensive to make. First, I used self Reiki and the Usui Distance symbol to ask my Reiki Guides what the bowl was to look like. Then I went to a thrift store, bought an old wooden salad bowl, cleared and cleaned it, drew the Reiki symbols all over, and painted it and filled it with the Reiki again . I have included free instructions on how to make a Reiki Burning Bowl my website, www.ReikiLifestyle.com.

Or you can use any kind of a bowl that is safe for burning paper. The ceramic bowl in the photograph was a gift to me from one of my students. It is also perfect to use as a Reiki Burning Bowl. Always fill your bowl with rock salt or earth to stabilize the candle and give a safe place for the paper to burn to ashes.

If I have a larger group for my Reiki Burning Bowl Ceremony then I create thebowl as a bonfire or use a patio fire pit. I have read some of the Unity Churches use the bottom half of a barbeque for their Burning Bowl because their ceremonies are so large. It is appropriate to use any style fire container, just prepare and imbue it with Reiki to make it sacred.

Your ceremony can be held indoors or outdoors. If you have it indoors, consider fire safety as a priority. Use heightened attention to the fire, be aware. Ask people to burn their prayers one at a time and wait until the paper is mostly burned before the next person burns their prayers. Have a fire safe stand or a tile under the bowl to protect your carpet or other surfaces. . Make sure you are not underneath your smoke detector during the ceremony. Have water ready in a container or a fire extinguisher available in case the fire gets too big.

Be prepared to dispose of the ashes appropriately after the ceremony. They will be mixed with the salt or the earth. I usually bury them, spread them or let the wind take them, after I am certain that the ashes are cold.

If you intend to have a Reiki Burning Bowl Ceremony for many people prepare for it appropriately. Write the prayers you will use for the ceremony in a book. You may want to dress in ceremonial clothing, set an altar, have flowers and music, make the room feel special and have a potluck feast of gratitude after the ceremony.

Set the space for the ceremony by drawing the Reiki symbols around the room. In particular, invoke the Usui Mental/Emotional symbol “to create a new habit,” and the Usui Distance symbol to create the Reiki Bridge of Light. Then strengthen your own light by drawing a large Usui Power symbol over your body and on each of your chakras. If you are Reiki I, intend and ask Reiki to fill every part of the ceremony for you.

Have the people attending form a circle around the burning bowl or fire. Give the people a pencil and two pieces of paper, one for what they want to get rid of and one for what they want to bring in. If they have Reiki ask them to activate their hands, if not invoke Reiki on their behalf using the Usui Distance Symbol.

Reiki Burning Bowl Ceremony

1. Place a candle in the center of your bowl. Fill your burning bowl with rock salt or earth to secure the candle.

2. Draw the Reiki symbols over your bowl, using all the symbols you are attuned to. Beam Reiki into the bowl with your hands. Fill your breath with Reiki and the intention that the bowl is sacred and blow Reiki into the center of the bowl. Intend that the bowl and the fire receive the prayers of the people and send them to the light.

3. Make an invocation to invite Reiki and your Reiki Guides. Invoke the Usui Power and Mental/Emotional symbols. If you have Karuna Reiki ®, use Zonar and Halu to release the old cellular connections and state the intention of the ceremony.

4. Have the participant take a quiet moment to connect to their heart and write what they are leaving behind, their release declarations, on paper.

5. Beam the Usui Distance symbol to create a Reiki Bridge of Light to the Creator, burn the paper with prayer, and send it to the Creator on the smoke.

6. Invoke the Usui Mental/Emotional symbol and Harth from Karuna Reiki ®. Have the participant take a quiet moment to listen to their heart and write their new intentions, empower the new intentions the Usui Emotional/Mental symbol and burn the prayer, sending it to the Creator.

7. Close the ceremony by thanking Reiki and your Reiki Guides. Say an ending prayer. Seal the healing with the Usui Power symbol.

8. Spread the ashes on the ground or bury them, and ask the earth to transform the ashes into nutrients for the earth. Thank the earth for receiving your prayers and what is no longer needed. Be careful about fire safety. Use water to wet the ashes or be certain they are cool before you spread them.

9. Reiki your Burning Bowl to clear it of unwanted energy. Be grateful for its service and appreciate it for its work. Take care of your bowl as it is an important healing tool.

This is just part of the wonderful article by Colleen. To read the rest of the article and learn about the other ways to use the Burning Bowl Ceremony, please subscribe to Reiki News Magazine.

Reiki in the Office, Part II
by William Lee Rand

If you have Reiki and work in an office, there are many ways you can use Reiki to decrease stress, improve efficiency and enhance creativity. All three of these areas are important to the purpose of any office and therefore important to your boss and the business owner. By using Reiki in the ways mentioned here, you’ll be a more valuable employee at that same time you make your job easier and more enjoyable for you as well as for your fellow employees. Part I which appeared in the October online newsletter explained how to combine Reiki and work and using Reiki on the telephone.

Reiki and the Office Environment
The state of energy in your work space has a direct affect on how well you are able to do your job. If there is tension in your office whether from fellow employees, deadlines or office projects, your boss or simply because you’re having a bad day, your efficiency, creativity and personal well-being can be compromised. In situations like this, it’s important to make use of your Reiki energy and skills to maintain a state of harmony and balance in your office environment.

If you arrive to the office stressed because of personal issues, traffic on the way to work or lack of sleep; take a few minutes to do Reiki on yourself. This will reduce your stress level and create refreshing feelings that will keep you going. Then take a few minutes at regular intervals throughout the day to give yourself short Reiki treatments. This can be done by placing your hands on your legs or if that’s not possible, then by simply thinking of Reiki while you stare at your computer screen. Reiki will flow throughout your aura and physical body creating soothing feelings the refresh and relax.

One important technique that will help everything you do at the office is creating a sacred space around your desk that prevents tension and negative energy from affecting you. Use crystals or other stones charged with Reiki and pointed outward to maintain a filter that prevents Reiki from reaching your work area. Charge each crystal by placing it in your hands, drawing any Reiki symbols you know over it and especially the power symbol and holding it between your hands as you think of Reiki. This only takes a few minutes. As you give the crystal Reiki intend that its purpose is to maintain your sacred, stress free work area. Then arrange the crystals around your desk with point outward. From time to time, meditate on Reiki and on charging your crystals with Reiki and on maintaining the Reiki filter. You can do this simply with intention and without the need to place your hands in any particular position. You can also use one or more potted plants to help maintain your filter.

If a situation is creating tension in your office, it’s possible to send Reiki to the situation to reduce the stress it’s creating and to help it be resolved. Think of the situation, then think of the distant symbol by visualizing it in your mind or saying its name to yourself. Then send Reiki. This can be done while engaged in any activity such as typing or doing other work. You don’t need to do anything special for this to work. Reiki can flow directly from your aura or from any of your chakras or simply from your being. From time to time, think of Reiki and about sending Reiki to the situation. This will reduce your stress about the situation at the same time it reduces the overall stress it was causing in the office, thus helping everyone.

If an individual causes you stress and is difficult to be around, and you’re not able to avoid the person, privately send Reiki to him or her. Use the distant symbol and ask that the Reiki be sent only if this honors the person’s free will and that their spirit chooses to allow it to benefit them. Do this internally by thinking of Reiki and the distant symbol with the intention of sending it to the person. This will create a positive energetic relationship between you and the other person and help the two of you get along better. If the person chooses not to receive the Reiki you send, then the energy will simply stay with you acting to reduce the stress you experience from the person and helping you focus on your work. You can also do this with your boss.

Reiki at Meetings
Office meetings can sometimes be boring or otherwise be tedious and unproductive. Reiki can help this situation. Start by sending Reiki to the meeting before it starts. Just think of the meeting, the time and location where it is to be held and think of the distant symbol. Send Reiki for five or more minutes a half an hour before the meeting, or anytime before when you have time. While at the meeting, use the power symbol and the mental/emotional symbol as you send Reiki into the room and to everyone involved in the meeting. Do this inwardly with your mind only. This will act to make meeting go more smoothly and efficiently and keep the meeting on purpose. You’ll be amazed at the difference this technique can make.

Reiki Stories

Reiki on Campus

I feel that I am the most blessed Reiki Master in the world. I recently had the honour of attuning 12 college students to Level I and II and then spending Monday evenings with them for 7 weeks as they learned the techniques and experienced Reiki in their lives and the lives of their loved ones. This was the first time our college has offered Reiki as a one credit class through our Complementary & Alternative Medicine program, hosted by the Athletic Training Department. Reiki could be another wonderful connection for our students – a connection to relaxation and calm focus. Several students were amazed that they seemed to be studying less and doing better on exams…I think they were just more focused and studying more efficiently…but let’s hear from them directly.

At the end of the last class, I asked students to share something from their Reiki Journals which they had kept during their training. I am humbled and bursting with pride at the same time. Each student had a miraculous story to tell. Here are just a few snippets from their Reiki journals:

“..before school began I found out that I was pregnant. …This was great news, but….I was very nervous and apprehensive because I knew what was in store for me. I have ADHD and OCD and have been taking medication for years. Finding out, I knew I was going to have to cut down or go off from my medication all together. This really scared me because I figured it would probably affect my ability to work, focus, and sit still during class. I went off two of my medications all together and had to cut down on another one. A few weeks into the semester I could feel the affects of the decrease in my medication affecting my school work and ability to concentrate. I especially have problems with writing, focusing my attention on main points, staying calm and motivated, and not getting to anxious or stressed out about my difficulties with such things. After attending Reiki class … it was as though I was back on my meds. My body reacted as though Reiki was medicating me in the same way. I am able to stay focused, calm, stress-free, and things just seem to be flowing.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“After I was attuned I noticed that it helped me stop smoking. I haven’t had a cigarette in almost 3 weeks. The first two days were hard but I don’t even want one anymore”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

“I am a lot calmer about things that I would have normally freaked out about. My art is clicking like you wouldn’t believe. I’ve never had my art click and flow like this before. I feel very in tune with my art. It makes me think I’ve found what I’m supposed to do, and that’s an awesome feeling. I’ve also been a lot calmer with just about everything.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
”I am so grateful to have found Reiki. It is the piece that has been missing from my soul. I feel that I am not even the same person who began this class. I like this person so much better. In fact, I love her and everyone I meet, what a gift!...I have found what I have been searching for for fifty years…”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

“When I came into class I was in the worst mood ever, my sculpture project didn’t work, my drawing class was hard. I was even thinking about not going to class. But I did! I gave a treatment with some other people and it was helping my mood, then I got a treatment and I was still kind of (grumpy) and upset, but a few minutes after my mood completely changed. I was happy ... It was great. “

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“While having a Reiki treatment in class I had the experience of feeling the tension rise out of my spine, up through my body and out. It was a very interesting feeling, and I felt great afterwards.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

“I did Reiki treatments on my husband and my son and they both got relief from their pains.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
During my few weeks spent studying the affects of Reiki on the human body and all of the wondrous purposes that it can be used for I was finding every excuse to use it on other people. I was really surprised by the subtlety of the actual energy that I learned as Reiki and the attunement process was very relaxing and enjoyable. I enjoy giving and receiving Reiki treatments because they are very serene and relaxing…This was the best experience I have had so far here at college….
