Getting your Reiki Practice Started

Perhaps you attended a Reiki class a while ago and have been giving yourself treatments and sharing Reiki with your friends and family. And in the back of your mind the thought of starting a Reiki practice or teaching may have occasionally come up, but you haven’t decided to act on it yet. Perhaps you think it might be too difficult to get started, or the timing isn’t right or maybe you have doubts about your ability. Perhaps you find it difficult to see yourself with a Reiki business, or you may even have fear of being judged for doing something that others might see as being too different.
Whatever the reason, I’d like to suggest that if the thought has been in your mind about starting a practice, it’s there for a purpose and that starting a Reiki practice is easier than you might think. And in fact it can be a lot of fun!
There are many rewards you’ll experience from starting a Reiki practice. You’ll feel happier, have more vitality, be more positive both mentally and emotionally, and be a lot healthier, simply from being in the Reiki energy more frequently. You’ll also have a feeling of accomplishment from having gotten something valuable started that will also provide you with a source of income. The most important reward will be the special feeling you’ll get in your heart from helping others—sometimes when there’s no one else to help them.
If you’ve taken a Reiki class, even if it’s the very beginning class, Level I, you have the ability to begin a Reiki practice right now. I know some teachers say you have to at least have Reiki II to begin a practice, but keep in mind that while we respect the right of a Reiki teacher to decide what and how to teach, it’s also important for each student to think for themselves and make their own decisions based on facts. It’s a fact that Mrs. Takata, the founder of Western Reiki, worked at the Hayashi clinic in Japan after she learned Reiki I, providing Reiki sessions for his clients, both in the clinic and by making house calls.1 Also, Takata taught that after Reiki I, a student not only could, but also should, charge money for Reiki sessions. I’ve heard so many positive stories of people having miraculous results after taking a Reiki I class that there’s no question that anyone with any level of Reiki training is qualified to start a Reiki practice and charge money for sessions. Remember, you’re not the one creating the healing experience, it’s the Reiki energy that flows through you automatically that does this. All you have to do is place your hands on someone for it to begin working!
I’d like to share a few of the best ideas I have for starting a Reiki practice. These ideas are simple, yet they been tested and proven to work. First of all, it’s important to know that it will actually be an easy transition from giving Reiki to your family and friends to giving full sessions and charging money.
In terms of how much to charge, I suggest setting a target fee and then start out with a low fee and slowly work your way up to your target fee. As you give more sessions, you will gain experience and your sessions will be worth more, thus justifying the increase in price. Usually your target fee will be about the same amount that people are charging for massage in your area, which can vary from $35.00 to over $100.00 per hour or session. So it’s a good idea to check bulletin boards or ask around to find out how much people are charging.
Once you’ve established your target fee, I suggest setting your beginning fee at $10.00. Then tell people you’re going to charge $10.00 per session for the first 10 sessions you give after starting your business, and then your fee is going to go up to $20.00 per session for the next 10 sessions. Once you’ve given a few sessions, let clients and potential clients know how many sessions you’ve given at $10.00 so they will know when they can expect to pay more. Continue with this process, increasing your fee every 10 sessions until you reach your target fee. When potential clients hear your fee is going up soon, it will motivate them to get a session from you right away.
Another thing that works well is gift certificates. These can be designed on your computer and printed out. Include your name, email address, Web site, if you have one, and your phone number. Don’t include your physical address, as you don’t want people coming to your door unless they’ve booked a session. Then give your gift certificates to people who seem interested. Not everyone will use them, but it’s a good way to get people coming to you for sessions. At the end of the free session, let them know how much you charge and ask them if they’d like to book more sessions.
Developing an email list of those interested in Reiki is very important. You can gather email addresses from the client information form you use to gather information from your clients at the beginning of your sessions, from your Web site, or at Reiki share groups and other venues. Once you’ve got an email list you can use it to send out bulk emails announcing special prices for your sessions or your Reiki share group or special events or presentations and other Reiki news of interest. It costs almost nothing to send out these notices, and it’s an easy and effective way of generating more business.
Once you begin earning money from your sessions you’ll have a real business. It’s important that you realize this and treat your Reiki practice as a real business. This means developing a set of business practices. The important ones are advertising and promotion, keeping track of your sessions and recording both income and expenses. You don’t need to do all of these things right away, but as you move along with your practice, they’ll be necessary. Note you’ll be able to deduct your expenses from your income taxes at the end of the year. This includes the money you spend on a Reiki table, CDs, candles, crystals and other healing tools, the cost of additional Reiki classes, Reiki retreats, travel expenses and so forth. By giving 3 to 20 sessions a week, it’s possible to earn between several hundred to several thousand dollars per week once you get established. While you’ll likely begin making money right away, to get firmly established might take 2-4 months to a year, but once you’ve got it going, the time and effort you’ve put into your business will really be worth it!
The most important thing you can do to start and develop your practice is to develop a positive, enthusiastic, and success-oriented mental attitude. The mind is like a magnet and will attract to you what you think about most. The more positive and certain you are about your goals the more easily you will attract the resources and especially the clients you need to get your practice going. Enthusiasm is contagious. By taking time each day to give yourself Reiki while you visualize your successful Reiki practice, dreaming about it as if it is real, the miracle of Reiki will lift you up and work through you to manifest your goal in a way that is real in both the material as well as the spiritual worlds. This is the most important idea I have to share with you: The use of Reiki energy and principles to develop your Reiki practice will make this project not only easier to achieve, but will also help you to heal and grow as a person.

Experiences of a Reiki Therapist

My personal healing through Reiki began ten years ago. I had been in a five-year divorce battle that threatened to alienate me from my children. I was stuck, suffering, traumatized and emotionally and spiritually blocked. I had tried traditional modalities for healing, to no avail. I then received a few Reiki treatments and attunements . Immediately, I felt relief. My path opened as the Reiki energy flowed through me. The blockage that was preventing me from moving forward in my emotional and spiritual growth was removed. I was able to really love again. The Reiki healing allowed me to open my heart and forgive. Having Reiki as a tool assures me that the peace of mind and stability I have gained are here to stay.
As a Reiki practitioner and teacher for the past ten years, I have been blessed to facilitate many miraculous outcomes for others. Among the healings I have had the joy of witnessing are clients’ recoveries from chronic and acute illnesses.
Following are accounts of Reiki healing experienced by several of my clients, who have generously agreed to share their own Reiki healing stories.
Client Case #1
Brenda Generali brought me her newborn son, Joshua, who was born with Brachial Plexus (birth palsy). Due to complications during the birth, Joshua’s entire right arm was paralyzed. After three 45-minute Reiki treatments, Joshua regained 80 percent of his range of motion and feeling in his arm. He continued with a full recovery and gained complete use of his arm. I taught Brenda Reiki I so she could continue to give Reiki treatments to her son, too!
Brenda Generali’s testimony:
I had heard some years prior to the birth of my son that Reiki could heal tissues through energy so I made an appointment with Therese Johnson. I took Joshua to Therese six times for Reiki treatments until we were told that Joshua would not need surgery and that he would have a full recovery. I think that without Reiki Joshua would have had to have tendon transfer surgery at Shriner’s hospital and he would not have normalmovement. Brenda Generali 2003-Colfax, CA
Client Case #2
JS came to me for Reiki treatments to relieve the side effects of seizures he was experiencing due to brain cancer (the same kind of cancer Senator Kennedy is currently battling). When I placed my hands on JS’s head, I could feel the seizures, but within ten minutes of administering Reiki energy the seizures would stop completely.

Client Case #3
Joseph M. had been suffering from bi-polar manic depression. He had been self-medicating with methamphetamines for 20 years. This behavior had terrible results, including time in prison. He was 40 years old and wanted to heal, to be released from his dependence on drugs, and to experience real health. I gave Joseph a one-hour Reiki treatment, and his desire to take methamphetamines completely left him. I have no words to describe what occurred during his treatment. I was in absolute awe of the changes that took place and the healing power of Reiki. The changes in his energy field were immediate as the Reiki energy flowed through. He was ready to heal and he did.

I have been clean and free from a methamphetamine 25-year drug addiction for eight years now ever since I received a Reiki treatment from Therese Johnson that helped me remove my desire for methamphetamines.

Client Case #4
Jean Harmon Testimony:
Therese Johnson treated my hypertension with Reiki energy. When we started, my blood pressure was 200/89; within 20 minutes it was reduced to 132/79. Amazingly, the severe headache that came with the elevated numbers and high blood pressure also disappeared.

I have treated hospice patients, eliminating their pain and the need to be on heavy doses of morphine for anywhere from 24-72 hours with one Reiki treatment. This allows for great relief not only for the patient but also for the family so that they can spend quality time with each other with the patient being able to be cognizant of his surroundings and family. Once the patient’s pain is controlled there is peace. Everyone relaxes when the patient is comfortable. I then show the family or caregiver how they too can continue to give Reiki energy, allowing them to become active participants in comforting the patient. It is a beautiful process that takes the fear and stress out of the patient’s transition.
I teach Reiki classes to individual caregivers and Residential Assisted Living Community Caregivers so they can ease the suffering of seniors. Reiki has proven to be of enormous help in alleviating Alzheimer’s dementia behavioral problems. Currently, my focus is on offering Reiki to our young soldiers returning home from war who are suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

The ninth World Peace Card group meditation has been scheduled for Thursday, September 17 at 7:30pm. This is local time in your time zone. This method has been chosen because of the special effect it produces. As people meditate in each successive time zone the energy builds like a wave which gets stronger and stronger as it circles the planet. Because of the higher dimensional nature of consciousness, the energy of peace will be transmitted for a full 24 hours and continue long after this.

As they united with those taking part in the meditation a feeling of peace developed within that stayed with each for a long time. Some saw beautiful golden light surrounding the planet and others felt that a web of fear was dissipating and being replaced with trust in others and for our future.

By taking part in this group meditation, you’ll be joining thousands of people who will be using the cards to bring peace to the world. By joining together, the affect we have will be greatly multiplied. This powerful experience and will help shift the vibration of our wonderful planet into a higher state of consciousness. As you use the cards to meditate on world peace, you will be a beacon through which peace will spread around the planet which will have a positive uplifting effect on all people.
Please set aside this time to meditate with the cards. The suggested meditation period is 15 minutes, but of course you can meditate longer if you’d like to. The technique I’d like you to use is based on allowing yourself to be a beacon of peace. The World Peace Cards hold the vibration of the World Peace Grids which have been placed at spiritually significant locations and are relay stations for higher consciousness. By simply opening to their energy, you’ll become a channel for their love and peace which will flow through you to all the people on Earth. To do this, hold the cards in your hands or place them in front of you. Then simply meditate on peace.
We are entering a new era. Our entire planet including all the people and living things are moving into a place where it will be much easier to solve our problems and to create peace, prosperity and happiness for everyone. The World Peace Card meditation will quicken this process, making it easier for people to experience this new quality of higher consciousness and will provide great benefit for all people. Since this benefit will be flowing through you out to everyone on the planet, you'll be blessed by this experience as well.

Cancer Healed
My name is Sarbjit Bhardwaj and I live in New Delhi, India. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in September, 2007, and was operated on immediately the same month. After that I was given chemotherapy and radiation for the next 8 months. My treatment was over in May, 2008, but in October, 2008, the cancer returned. This time my liver and bones were its target. Doctors gave me no hope and were told that there is another type of medicine also they could use and I received chemotherapy once again. I was bed ridden during the whole month of November and December, 2008 and unable to sit even for a few seconds. Doctors lost hope and told me that it was an advanced stage of cancer. But something else was destined to happen.
On 1st January, 2009 my husband read the Reiki Healing Foundation’s advertisement in a newspaper. He immediately called Dr. N.K. Sharma and got an appointment for the same day. After meeting Dr. Sharma we were full of hope. Guruji scanned my aura and started emergency healing. My condition improved and I started to sit and walk within a week. After being advised by Guruji and Guruma, we both learnt Reiki on 10th & 11th Jan., 09. After that there was a sea change in my condition. I started giving Reiki to myself daily. After seeing the improvement in my condition, my Allopathic Doctor suggested tests to be done after the third cycle of chemotherapy. To everybody’s surprise, all the tests were normal.
Secondly, as there was cancer in my neck, and hair did not grow in that area. I gave Reiki (only once) to that area and forgot about it. After 2-3 days, I noticed that hair had started growing in that area. I and my family are so thankful to Reiki that I can t explain it in words. It is a miracle. I am very sure that I have been cured through Reiki. Guruji and Guruma ko SHAT SHAT PRANAM. Not only have they helped us to get rid of all our problems, but also they have opened our eyes toward a new approach to life. S.K. Bhardwaj
Osteoporosis Pain Healed
My mother is a very active 80 year old. She has severe osteoporosis and lives with this pain constantly. She is not one for pain pills, so she endures the pain until it is intolerable. Living several states away, (as a Master Reiki Practitioner) I am not able to give her any hands on Reiki treatments. However, I do try to send long distance Reiki as much as I can.
On one of our trips to visit her, she was suffering with her pain terribly. I offered a Reiki session, and she welcomed any relief. She stated that there wasn’t one area on her body that did not have pain. Along with that, she also was trying to cope with the pain of a breakout of Shingles which had localized on the posterior side of her right thigh. As she could not lay down on any flat surface, I conducted my session while she sat in a rocking chair. I was skeptical at first, not thinking she would be able to relax at all in that position.
I finished her total body session in one hour. Several times during the session she had fallen sound asleep and was breathing very slowly and deeply. During her session I could feel more and more heat in my hands. In fact, the intensity of the heat traveled up to my wrists and to the middle of my forearms! The palms of both my hands were bright red! I had to awaken her when the time was up. She said that when she woke up, she had zero pain anywhere! I was amazed. She also said that she was calm and relaxed and had a feeling of well-being throughout her body! She is the most receptive person I have ever experienced.
Throughout the remainder of our visit, she remained pain free (two more days). After we returned home, a couple of weeks went by then I called her. She said that she had been totally pain free without pain medication since we had left, and that only a slight amount of discomfort had started 1-2 days before I called. I believe in Reiki as a relaxation, as well as a self-healing, treatment. –Jana
Stiff Neck Healed
I just returned from a cruise to the Bahamas. While on the cruise at breakfast one morning our waiter could barely move. I asked him what was wrong and he said “stiff neck”. He also added he had it for TWO WEEKS! I told him that was too long and I could help him. I asked if he would he be able to take a few minutes so I could give him Reiki on his neck. He was not against the session, just about taking the time to have it done. I told him I would tell his boss I made him do it. After we ate our breakfast I took him to the back of the dining room and had him sit down while I gave him Reiki on his head, neck, shoulders, and back to the spot that was hurting the most. All the other wait staff were joking with him: did he want some coffee, how would he like his eggs, etc. Finally the head waiter did approach and I told him I just needed a few minutes to help him and I insisted on doing this. He actually thanked me for helping his staff since everyone knew he had been in pain for weeks. Even after the quick session he went back to his station and turned his head when someone spoke to him, then he realized he could move his neck and was very happy. That was the last day of the cruise so I did not see him again, but as we were leaving the ship I recognized another waiter from the dining room who was standing near and I asked how his friends neck was - he said much better thanks to you. I am always so in awe and appreciative that the Reiki is always able to help, even if it was a short session. Noel Stevens
