Finding Your Soulmate with Reiki
by Walter Lübeck

This is an excerpt from an article in the Fall 2004 back issue of the Reiki News Magazine.

Long before you incarnate again on Earth, you talk over your new life with your friends and guides in the realms of light. Because souls always come down as a team, it is necessary to adjust to each other's needs and wishes to create the best process in which to learn and to solve and to heal problems and karma. This kind of group is called a "soul family." During your next life on Earth, you will meet these people as friends, neighbors, lovers, colleagues, children, parents and other relatives, schoolmates, teachers, and spouses. Some members of this group may appear as spiritual teachers, medical doctors, or psychotherapists. Sometimes the time you have together is very short-but if the person is a member of your soul family, it will be a precious or otherwise important experience for you.

A soul mate is someone who belongs to your soul family of a given incarnation and is closely related to your path-much more closely then the others. A soul mate may appear as a close friend. In this case, your friendship will endure even long periods of time when you cannot meet or talk to each other. As soon as you come together again, you will find that everything is like it had been before. The resonance between the both of you is so strong that space and time cannot interfere. A soul mate may appear as your child, teacher, or spouse. The relationship between soul mates is a very special relationship full of deep understanding and closeness.

A dual soul is even more special, but also more seldom encountered than soul mates. The regular members of your soul family will be around you in one way or another during your life. But if you don't accept what you really are, if you try with all your strength to live the life of another, a life according to the standards of other people, then the members of your soul family will not be close to you. They belong to your path-if you don't walk it, you cannot share your life with them directly. If you don't walk your path, life is frustrating: nobody seems to understand you, nobody seems to care about you, nobody seems to love you. Away from your spiritual path, people cannot understand you because the resonance of your soul to theirs is too low. You are not kin, not meant to be close together-at least in this lifetime.

The closer you keep to your spiritual path, the stronger your relationships with the members of your soul family will be. Once you are on your spiritual path, life becomes easier and more satisfying. It becomes much easier for you to open your heart to these other people, because their heart is open to you. If you move still closer to your spiritual vision-or if you do it for a certain time-you will also meet soul mates. With these people, understanding and sharing is even better than with your soul family.

You might marry one of the soul mates or a member of your soul family who is not that close to you. The relationship will probably not be bad, but it will not really be fulfilling. You will, after a while, feel that something is missing. It is neither your fault nor your partner's fault. You could even stay together happily for the rest of your life. But you will miss something of enormous importance, a kind of love you cannot define, explain, or really communicate. But if you experience it, you will know-there is a paradise on this earth!

To meet a dual soul, you need to be very close to your path, very resonant with the divine, very much conscious about what you really are. Most people need years or even decades to reach that state. During this time, they often marry or establish another kind of stable loving relationship with someone. Because they chose a partner for a long-term relationship while in a state of low resonance with their path, their wife or husband often does not belong to the person's soul family at all, is a normal member of the soul family, or is, at best, a soul mate.

But what if you then meet your dual soul? This is why many people who start to walk the spiritual path decide to end their present relationship after a couple of years or when they have made significant progress with their personal development. If this is so, the end should be made as harmonious as possible, because it's nobody's fault, from a spiritual point of view.

But please think and meditate seriously about that kind of step! You should not part with your husband or wife out of a spontaneous rise of emotion, because you think it will be easier with another partner, or because you think that everything you suffer from is your partner's fault. Also, if you meet someone new, take your time to find out about the truth of this relationship before you step into something that might be very difficult. Consulting an oracle or attending a couple of spiritual counseling sessions will help you to find out what is right and what is wrong for you at the given time.

Keep in mind that if, after having analyzed your situation in depth from a spiritual point of view, you find that you met a dual soul, you will never forgive yourself if you don't relate to him or her.

Creating a Volunteer Reiki Program
by Karen Wise Olander, M. Ed

This is an excerpt from an article in the Winter 2005 back issue of the Reiki News Magazine.

Have you ever considered creating a volunteer Reiki program for people who might not otherwise try Reiki, such as people with cancer, the elderly, or others? Such a program provides an opportunity to spread the word about Reiki, strengthen your connection with other Reiki practitioners in your area, meet new people, and share ideas.

There are many ways to structure a volunteer Reiki program. The following two approaches outline ideas to help you design a program for your own circumstances. Note that the two organizations described in this article are for people with cancer. But you could offer Reiki to the elderly, or to pre-op patients, or for kids in the hospital (or their parents!) . . . the possibilities are endless.

Harbor for Healing
The volunteer Reiki program “Harbor for Healing,” created by a woman in Chatham, Massachusetts, is for women with cancer. It takes place once a week for two hours in two locations—Wellfleet and Chatham—on Cape Cod. Each location handles six appointments a week, with four to six practitioners. This program runs year-round.

Reiki Night
The other volunteer program, called “Reiki Night,” is offered through Cancer Connection, an organization in Florence, Massachusetts, that offers programs and support groups for men and women with cancer, their partners, and caregivers. Reiki Night takes place for two hours, once a month, on alternating Monday and Thursday nights. This drop-in program accommodates an average of twelve to fifteen people at each monthly session. (Cancer Connection also offers individual Reiki sessions one day a week, with paid practitioners, funded by a grant.) Reiki Night is offered every month except August.

Reiki practitioners must be Reiki Masters to work in the Reiki Night program and Level II’s or Masters for Harbor for Healing. They also need extensive experience, as they work with people who are seriously ill. Each of the programs has a “leader” who, among other tasks, screens potential practitioners for experience and the ability to fit in with the other team members.

The Harbor for Healing team leader makes appointments for recipients by phone, communicates with practitioners, and oversees the program each week. The Cancer Connection program operates on a walk-in basis, so no appointments need to be scheduled, but the team leader e-mails practitioners to remind them of the monthly meeting date, tells them what they need to bring (tables or sheets), and acts as timekeeper during the sessions. She greets recipients as they arrive, has them fill in forms, and takes them to the tables for their sessions.

Practitioners at Cancer Connection take turns bringing tables and sheets. Harbor for Healing owns several tables (purchased with donations) and sets of sheets, which are stored at the site where the program takes place. In either case, practitioners need to arrive early, before the recipients arrive, to help set up the tables and cover them with linens and pillows.

Both programs feature a clinic-type setting: Tables are set out in rows with as much space between them as the room allows. At the entrance to the room a note is posted to remind people to lower their voices (and turn off their cell phones!) so as not to disturb anyone within.

After setup, before the evening begins at Cancer Connection, the Reiki Team gathers in a circle for prayer and healing words and thoughts. Practitioners can name people to whom they wish the group to send healing during the evening. At Harbor for Healing, practitioners greet recipients and talk with them briefly before the sessions begin.

The team leader’s phone number is posted on all fliers for Harbor for Healing so that potential recipients can call and make appointments for the six 45-minute time slots available each week. Cancer Connection has a drop-in policy for their monthly program, so potential recipients sign up for a session when they arrive for the evening. The length of sessions on Reiki Night depends on the number of practitioners and recipients who are there on a particular evening, but it is usually about 25 minutes.

Practitioners in both programs find that doing Reiki with a partner (when there are enough practitioners to assign two to a table) is a luxury for those who usually work alone. With a partner, one practitioner can work at the recipient’s head and another at the feet, and then each can take a side and work down the receiver’s body in parallel fashion. Both practitioners and receivers benefit from this.

Does Reiki Always Flow Where It Is Needed?
by William Lee Rand

In some Reiki groups and circles the idea that Reiki will flow to where it is needed is commonly taught. It’s said that no matter where you place your hands, Reiki will flow anywhere in the body to do its work. Some have thought that if this is true then why do we teach the use of different hand positions. Simply placing your hands over the ears as an example will allow a complete treatment as Reiki will flow from this position and treat the whole person.

This idea is based on a misunderstanding. While Reiki does sometimes flow from where the hands are placed to other areas in need, this doesn’t always happen. The reason this does sometimes happen is because in some instances, there is a special energetic connection between an area in need of Reiki and another area of the body or the aura. When this condition is present, Reiki will flow in this way. But this isn’t always the case.

This misunderstanding likely came from the fact that the best place to treat a condition isn’t always over the area where the symptoms are present. When this is the case, Reiki will flow from one area of the body to treat another. This idea was presented to me by my first Reiki teacher, Bethel Phaigh in 1981. When treating a specific condition, she told us to first place the hands over the area where the symptoms exist and treat in this way, but if Reiki doesn’t flow well and the client also reports that he or she doesn’t feel much relief, then use your intuition to guide you to another place on the body and treat there. Often, this will seem like a completely illogical area to place the hands, but if it’s right, when you place your hands there, Reiki will begin flowing strongly and travel from where your hands are placed directly to the area in need and the client will report relief.

I had my first experience of this when treating a woman with a hip problem. First I placed my hands on the outer sides of her hips, but didn’t feel much Reiki flowing and she also reported that it wasn’t helping. Then, using my intuition, I was guided to treat the knees. Immediately, Reiki began flowing strongly and she reported Reiki flowing from her knees, directly to her hips. Soon she reported the pain was gone and when she tried walking, her hips felt much better.

This experience validates both the standard system of hand placements that treats the whole body, as well as the Japanese Reiki Techniques of Byosen scanning and Reiji ho. By treating the whole body, you automatically treat those areas where Reiki can easily access the energy system and will flow to whereit is needed. And by using Byosen scanning, and/or Reiji ho you’ll be guided to those specific areas where an energetic opening exists.

Therefore, it can be seen that Reiki doesn’t necessary flow to where it is needed from any location on the body. Because of this, it’s important to either do a complete treatment using all the hand positions, and/or allow yourself to be guided to the most needy and receptive areas if you want to provide the best healing experience for your client.

Knowing Which Reiki Symbols or Techniques to Use
by William Lee Rand

As students progress on the Reiki path new symbols, techniques and skills are acquired. By the time one takes more advanced levels such as Usui master or Karuna Reiki ® , the number of symbols, techniques, meditations and hand positions one has available to use really add up. In fact, after one has taken Karuna Reiki ® , you could have as many as 38 possible tools or techniques to use.

Remembering all of them and knowing which ones to use to treat yourself or a client can be challenging. This can be especially true if you need to treat yourself for a difficult situation that has stressed you out. When we’re stressed, we often don’t think as clearly as we could and it’s more likely we’ll forget some of the possible techniques we could use and miss the one that is most appropriate.

However, there is a method you can use to help remember your Reiki resources and also direct you to the ones you need to use for a particular situation. This is something I created for myself several years ago and it has proven really valuable. I made my own deck of cards with each of my Reiki resources listed on them. I was then able to use the cards to do a reading for myself that showed me which symbols, techniques, meditations or hand positions to use for the specific situation I wanted to heal or resolve.

Here's How To Do It
First list all the Reiki symbols, techniques, meditations and hand positions you know. Then using your computer with a program such as msword or pagemaker, create the outline of a small card – 2” x 3” will work. Once you have one card outline, copy and paste it over and over until you’ve created the number of cards you need.

Then fill in the names or descriptions of each of the symbols, techniques, meditations and hand positions onto the cards – one to a card. Print them using card stock. Then cut them out with scissors. Cutting them out by hand will take a little time and patience, but it’s worth it. While you’re cutting, think of Reiki and it’ll make your work easier and also place Reiki into the cards.

Once you’ve created your deck of cards use the following instructions to do a Reiki reading.

  1. Choose the issue you’d like to work on.

  2. Shuffle the cards to remove any energy that may be present from previous readings.

  3. Charge the cards with Reiki by holding them in your hands and thinking of Reiki. If you have Reiki II, use the mental/emotional symbol, but if not this process will work just fine without it.

  4. Shuffle the cards again while thinking of your issue.

  5. Spread them out in front of you in one line face down.

  6. Using your non-dominate hand and while thinking of Reiki choose 3 cards and turn the over.

  7. The cards you pick will have the symbols, techniques, meditations or hand positions you’ll need to solve your issue.

You can also use this technique for a client with an issue. Do steps 1-3 yourself and ask the client to do steps 4 and 5.

It’s uncanny how accurate this method can be. The wisdom or Reiki will be guiding you to choose the right cards and often what you get will give you insight into your issue based on which symbol(s), hand positions and so forth that you get.

This technique really works and I encourage you to create your own cards and use them!

Recently I worked with a production company and had a deck of Reiki cards professionally printed. These cards are part of The Reiki Touch Kit .
