Finding the Energetic Doorway
by William Lee Rand

Students often ask me how to provide the greatest benefit for their clients during Reiki sessions and of course there are a number of things to consider. An important one is a lesson I learned in my first Reiki class. This took place in 1981 on the Big Island of Hawaii. I met Bethel Phaigh, my first Reiki teacher, in a rebirthing class that was being taught by Leonard Orr, the man who developed Rebirthing-Breathwork. It was a weeklong class, and there was lots of free time. Bethel asked to talk to the group and she talked about Reiki. I hadn't heard of Reiki before, but her description was so intriguing I decided I'd have to take her class. Experiences I had during the attunement and afterwards when we practiced made me realize that Reiki healing energy contained a higher level of consciousness than any other healing method I had experienced, and I was very happy I had decided to take it. The class started me on a journey of discovery, healing and fulfillment that I'm still deeply involved with to this day.

Bethel had been taught by Takata Sensei who had recently passed to the other side, and so the blessings of her teaching and her healing energies were still fresh in Bethel's consciousness. This was a blessing for me and the other students as well. Part of Bethel's teaching involved how to find the best location to treat a specific condition or illness. Bethel told us that sometimes the best place to treat is not necessarily where the symptom or condition is located. She told us several stories Takata Sensei had shared with her during her Reiki training that demonstrate this principle. These stories can also be found in Reiki: Hawayo Takata's Story, by Helen Joyce Haberly. In one of the stories, a man came to Takata Sensei with a headache but rather than treat the head, she began treating the gall bladder. The man complained and said "It's up here. I don't have a stomachache, I have a headache." But Takata Sensei simply said that her Reiki hands felt much vibration over the gall bladder so she continued to treat this area. After this she continued with a complete set of hand placements and by the time she got to his head, the pain was gone. In another story, a young girl who was blind was brought to Takata Sensei . Takata Sensei was guided to treat the ovary area and over the course of several months of treatment, the girl’s eyesight returned.

Bethel went on to say that when treating a condition or illness, first go to the area where the symptoms are located and treat there. If you feel a lot of Reiki flowing, stay there, as the flow of Reiki indicates that this is the area to treat. If neither you nor the client feel much energy flowing there, then take a moment to clear your mind and ask your intuition to show you the best place to treat the condition. When doing this, it's important to not allow your logical mind to get in the way, as often the answer you get will not seem logical at all. This is what happened to me in my first class. While practicing with our new Reiki energy, my practice partner indicated that she had a problem with her hips, so I began by placing my hands on either side of her hip area. Neither of us felt much Reiki flowing, so she suggested that I try the intuitive method Bethel had talked about. I did this, but when I got that I should treat the knees, I was confused, as my logical mind said that this didn't make any sense. But following Bethel's instructions, I moved the logical part of my mind off to the side and opened the intuitive side by simply trusting in it. Then I followed this intuitive guidance and sure enough, as soon as I placed my hands on her knees, my Reiki partner reported that she could feel Reiki enter the knees, flow up to the hip area and begin healing. We were both happily surprised that Reiki would work in this seemingly unusual way.

As I gained more experience with Reiki and inwardly watched the Reiki energy flowing, and also discussed this phenomena with other practitioners, a deeper understanding came to me about how and why this happens.

As you practice Reiki you may have noticed that Reiki will sometimes flow from your hands to other areas of the body. You and/or your client may sense this happening— it may feel like a warm, relaxing sensation in an area other than where your hands are placed. For example, when the hands are placed on the head, Reiki will treat the head but may also travel to the stomach. Conversely, when the hands are placed on the stomach, Reiki will treat this area but could also travel to the neck. Treating the feet might also result in Reiki flowing to the back, etc.

This doesn't always happen, but when it does, it is because you have placed your hands on an energetic doorway that links the two areas of the body or energy field together. The energetic doorway opens to a bridge or pathway through which Reiki flows to the other area. These energetic doorways are specific to the individual client and could change as the client heals.

When Reiki flows from one area to another,
it is because you've found an energetic doorway.

It is important to understand that this doesn’t mean that Reiki will always flow to wherever it is needed as some have thought. It simply means that the best place to treat an area isn’t always over the area where the symptoms exist. Because of this, the best way to treat a condition is to use your intuition to find the energetic doorway to the cause of the condition, which may be in another location on the body or aura than where the symptoms are located.

The reason this works is because we are holistic beings and so one area of our body or energy field is often connected to other areas. This also relates to cause and effect. The energetic doorway is usually where the cause of the symptom is located and because of this it is energetically connected to the symptoms. By treating the cause the symptoms are treated too.

This is an important part of Reiki practice and because it is, it was emphasized by Usui Sensei, the founder of Reiki. When he began teaching Reiki to others, he developed techniques to help them find the best areas to place one’s hands or in effect, find the energetic doorways. One of these techniques was Byosen scanning and another was Reiji ho, which make use of energetic sensitivity and intuition to find the right place to treat. (The method Takata Sensei taught was a simplified version of Reiji ho.)

Another way to treat the energetic doorways is to give a Takata Sensei-style full body session using all the hand positions. Because you are treating the whole body, you will automatically treat the energetic doorways and will know when you've found one when you feel the energy flowing more strongly. When this happens, stay there longer and/or return to these areas of stronger flow if you have additional time after you've completed all the hand positions.

Reiki is a wonderful practice that helps us be aware of the miraculous way our bodies and energy fields work. As we continue to practice on ourselves and others, we become increasingly aware of the value of this marvelous gift and become better able to make use of its special blessings.

My First Reiki Client
by Elynne Rosenfeld Allenson

This is the story of my Reiki practice. I hope that if you are thinking of starting your own practice and feeling a little apprehensive about what that would look like in the real world you will find some helpful information here.

The traditional model of what comprises a 'practice' for those in the healing field includes clientele, or patients, who come to the practitioner with a 'presenting problem' such as a pain or ailment. For me, knowing many in the traditional healthcare field such as MDs, RNs and mental health professionals with social work, psychology and family therapy credentials, I was reluctant to hang out a shingle despite my training as an Usui Tibetan Master/Teacher followed by training as a Karuna Reiki® Master/Teacher under the tutelage and lineage of William Lee Rand. I did however join the Reiki Membership Association (RMA) with a listing as an affiliate member.

A few months later I received an email from someone who lives locally. She found me through my listing on the RMA site and emailed me, and I responded immediately. We set up an appointment for a few days later. I was delighted that my client found me through the RMA and chose me because of my credentials as a student of William’s . In the best of all ways, the time and money I had invested in the class and in my membership fee was paid forward through their role in attracting my first client (whose payment to me, by the way, covered my RMA membership fee). I was on my way.

During my first client’s intake I fully expected her to tell me about pain, an emotional issue or injury. But none of this was on her mind. Instead, when asked what she would like the session to accomplish, she requested help achieving "inner peace." I asked if she had ever practiced Yoga, Qi Gong or meditation, and if she had ever had any other alternative treatments. "Yoga," she replied, but then admitted she had not been "successful" at reaching the zone. She further went on to say that she was always too busy to slow down enough to focus on that element of the exercise.

Before I get into the treatment itself, let me backtrack a bit and tell you a little about how I became a Reiki practitioner. I am one of the many who had Reiki slipped into a session of what was primarily another modality. In my case, it was added to a cranial sacral (also called craniosacral) treatment. Having had at least 10 such treatments I noticed a profound difference when Reiki was added because I relaxed more deeply, experiencing something like what others have described as an out-of-body experience. When I asked my cranio therapist what had been added, she told me. A couple of months later she attuned me to the first level of Reiki. It took two years of self-practice and pet and family care before I felt ready to take a Reiki Level II class. Learning the symbols deepened my focus, and using the distant symbol on people who were suffering and out of reach turned out to be so effective that friends were asking me to help their friends, relatives and pets.

Being attuned to the Master level was somewhat more elusive as I continued practicing at the second level for eight more years. When I finally took the ART/Master class I thought I'd be ready for the next thing— my own Reiki practice for which I would charge a treatment fee. Yet being able to channel this amazing energy did not translate into my being able to figure out how to set up a business in which to do so despite all the encouraging and instructive articles on the RMA site— until my first client came along. Now, with someone who asked for my professional services, I was ready to proceed.

I told my client where I would lay hands, asked her to relax and enjoy, tell me if anything bothered her during the session and to stop me if needed, but other than that, to let it flow. I administered a very traditional treatment, beginning with the third eye while she lay on her back, going down to her feet and up the back chakras after she turned, then spending a few minutes at her crown before the final grounding. Within a few minutes she was in a twilight sleep where she remained for the rest of the hour. When she rose she was delighted to say that she had gone right into some sort of meditative space where she felt comfortable to remain. She was so happy that she had achieved this that she signed on to attend another session the following week.

I have not in any way diagnosed this client. She is an adult, married with kids, subject to at least the usual stressors of life. I don't know what other profession she might work in. I don't want any of my own judgment to enter into the treatments. I only wish to help her find permission to locate the inner peace she requests. It is a strange trust, based only in my trust that my Guides are channeling the highest good to her, and her trust that whatever I am doing (and she doesn't ask many questions about the technique) does no harm. Every week she reports that she is more able to go back to the place she needs to be whenever she feels stressed, and that her mind is shifting further into a peaceful place where she can access what's required to meet crises as they arise.

What a gift to me that someone wanting something as seemingly esoteric as inner peace would seek my help to achieve it. It is a sign of the times that people are beginning to feel entitled to this, and that they can commit to an hour a week in which nothing else may interfere with their quest. What a gift that people are realizing that coping mechanisms do not necessarily require hours of talk on a couch to learn, that reduction in emotional pain does not necessarily require medication. My client has illustrated these things that I already knew during the years I had practiced Reiki on myself and loved ones. But for me, what is just as important as knowing that Reiki is affecting change she will be able to take with her long past our time together is knowing that I have a Reiki practice and am ready for others to experience its powers.

This one email I received through my listing as an RMA member has created the beginning of my "Professional Reiki Practice." My client was the perfect match to teach me lessons about how Reiki works, offering consistent goals and helping me act with confidence to reach them. I am ready to become more pro-active in the further development of my Reiki practice and will be utilizing the other great tools available through my RMA membership.

Reiki History Updated
Place it on Your Web Site

One of the facts about Reiki is that the practice didn’t start out in the West with an accurate history. There were many discrepancies in the story told by Takata Sensei and there were also difficulties in uncovering accurate information about the history. The difficulties included language, cultural and geographic barriers between Japan and the West as well as the fact Reiki went underground in Japan after World War II making it almost impossible even for the Japanese to learn Reiki.

However, as early as 1991, I began a search for an accurate history of Reiki and over time many discoveries were made. As more accurate information became available, I updated the history of Reiki in Reiki the Healing Touch. Over the last several years facts have emerged that provide important new insight into how Usui Sensei discovered, developed, practiced and taught Reiki. These new facts have come from research done in Japan by Hiroshi Doi, Tadao Yamaguchi, Hyakuten Inamoto and Arjava Petter. In August I completed an update of the history of Reiki which is included in a revised version of Reiki the Healing Touch. However, this new history is now available on the ICRT web site.

You have permission to copy and place this updated history onto your own web site – as long as you do not make any changes and use the whole document. To read the updated history or to place it on your web site click here.

Reiki Kitty
by Paula Kain

As a recently attuned Reiki Level II practitioner, I am learning to be open to life’s experiences and allowing things to happen without interference from me. I sometimes find myself controlling situations, and I’ve noticed that when I try to control the outcome of a situation, it usually doesn’t end up the way I expected. I’ve also noticed that when I allow situations to unfold with trust, faith and love, the results are far superior to anything I may have anticipated. It turns into a rewarding experience beyond my expectations. I recently had an experience just like that.

I practice Reiki on my friends and family. They have been wonderful about giving me their feedback as we work together in sessions. I have learned a lot from them and am feeling more confident in my skills and abilities as a blossoming Reiki practitioner. My Friday afternoon session with my friend, Karla, began at her house. I recently purchased my own table so I have the flexibility to go to the homes of my friends and family or they can come to me, at my house. This was our first session at her home. Previous sessions were held at a mutual friend’s office. Karla has a menagerie of critters living with her: two birds, two cats and three chickens. The birds and the cats are inside. The chickens live outside. I’ve been in Karla’s home before and her birds are very vocal. They are in a separate section of her house and make it very clear to the rest of us that they are there by screeching at the top of their little lungs! One of her cats, Smudge (Smudge is an all-white cat with just a smudge of dark fur on his chest), is the epitome of the curious cat. Her other cat, Buster, is never seen as he stays hidden in her bedroom.

Our sessions always start out the same way. She tells me what issues she is experiencing, and I start my session with a prayer, a Byosen Scan and energy field work, after which I transition to work on her specific issue. That day, Karla was feeling painful sciatica radiating down her left leg and into her left foot. During the first ten minutes of our session, her cat, Smudge, was roaming around the underside of my table, rubbing his face on the table cables, looking up at me and his mom, becoming more and more curious about what we were doing. I then ask Karla to roll over onto her stomach. As I begin working on her energy field, I noticed Smudge jump onto the couch, walk to an adjoining couch that is positioned closer to my table, meow several times, and then jump onto my table.

Smudge was clearly checking out the situation. He walked closer to me, looking for some attention. I gladly succumbed to his persistence and scratched his head and his ears. Karla asked me if I wanted to move Smudge to her bedroom and close the door. At that point, I had begun thinking that I could secure Smudge somewhere so he wouldn’t be interrupting my work. Then, remembering the purpose of learning a new normal, as my Reiki Master states it, I said to Karla —“Smudge isn’t bothering me if it’s okay with you.” Karla was completely fine with Smudge’s presence. After Smudge satisfactorily received some loving, he laid down at the foot of my table, seemingly content to just stay there.

As I finished a section of energy field work, I laid my hands end-to-end on Karla’s low back area. At that moment, Smudge got up and walked up the left side of Karla on a section of my table, climbed onto Karla’s legs and lay down on her legs, centered, with his upper body at the base of her spine. He wriggled around for a few seconds getting comfortable. The way he was lying and the way my hands were positioned, he could easily reach either of my hands. Smudge chose to place his paws on top of my left hand. My left hand is my dominate hand. Karla told me that she felt a huge amount of warmth from Smudge the moment he laid down.

Together, Smudge and I worked on Karla for 10 minutes, at which time he got up and walked back to the end of the table and laid down again. Karla told me that she felt an energy release when Smudge moved and that the pain in her low back area went from an eight to a two and was no longer radiating down her leg into her foot. With Smudge’s help, we were able to achieve in 10 minutes what used to take me 20 to 30 minutes! I did more energy field work on her legs and her feet. Smudge was still at the foot of my table. He shifted his body to lie back down on Karla’s toes, at which point Karla told me that she felt the blockage that was beginning to move from her back to her hip, release and travel down her right leg and out her right foot. I worked some more on her joints and her energy field.

By now, 40 minutes had passed since Smudge joined us. At that moment, I noticed how quiet the house has been for a while. Karla’s birds had not made any bird noises! If I didn’t know there were birds in the house, I would have convincingly told anyone Karla did not have birds in her house. Smudge then jumped down onto the floor. His work was done! And then I noticed another cat in the room with us. It was Buster! He was standing not three feet from me looking up at me! I studied him for just a couple of seconds, because I’ve never seen him and really didn’t know what he looked like. Buster is a beautiful gray striped tabby.

I finished my session with Karla, and we reveled in what had just transpired! Karlawent into another room and returned a minute later to tell me she bent down to pick up something with no thought of the painful sciatica. The blockage had released and was no longer causing her pain.

I am very grateful for continuing to be aware of my world and allowing situations to unfold with trust, faith and love. And, I am grateful for Smudge’s help!

World Peace Card Meditation
Wednesday, April 13, 7:30pm

Future Dates

Wednesday - May 15, June 19, July 17, Aug 14, Sept 18 at 7:30pm

You are invited to take part in the next World Peace Card Meditations. Please mark your calendar and forward this notice to all your friends.

Thanks for Your Help!

Because so many of you forwarded this email to your friends, there have been over 300,000 downloads of the World Peace Cards. This is a tremendous increase in the number of people using the cards. So far the total number of World Peace Card sets downloaded, received from our free offer and from our magazine has been more than 315,000! I hope you have been using your peace cards as their use brings blessings to the world as well as to you.

The next World Peace Card group meditations have been scheduled for Wednesday, March 13 at 7:30pm. This is local time in your time zone. This method has been chosen because of the special effect it produces. As people meditate in each successive time zone the energy builds like a wave which gets stronger and stronger as it circles the planet. Because of the higher dimensional nature of consciousness, the energy of peace will be transmitted for a full 24 hours and continue long after this.

Reports from those who took part in the previous meditations indicate many had powerful spiritual experiences. As they united with those taking part in the meditation a feeling of peace developed within that stayed with each for a long time. Some saw beautiful golden light surrounding the planet and others felt that a web of fear was dissipating and being replaced with trust in others and for our future.

All those who have received the cards are being asked to meditate on world peace at this time. By taking part in this group meditation, you’ll be joining thousands of people who will be using the cards to bring peace to the world. By joining together, the affect we have will be greatly multiplied. This powerful experience and will help shift the vibration of our wonderful planet into a higher state of consciousness. As you use the cards to meditate on world peace, you will be a beacon through which peace will spread around the planet which will have a positive uplifting effect on all people.

Please set aside this time to meditate with the cards. The suggested meditation period is 15 minutes, but of course you can meditate longer if you’d like to. The technique I’d like you to use is based on allowing yourself to be a beacon of peace. The World Peace Cards hold the vibration of the World Peace Grids which have been placed at spiritually significant locations and are relay stations for higher consciousness. By simply opening to their energy, you’ll become a channel for their love and peace which will flow through you to all the people on Earth. To do this, hold the cards in your hands or place them in front of you. Then simply meditate on peace.

We are entering a new era. Our entire planet including all the people and living things are moving into a place where it will be much easier to solve our problems and to create peace, prosperity and happiness for everyone. The World Peace Card meditation will quicken this process, making it easier for people to experience this new quality of higher consciousness and will provide great benefit for all people. Since this benefit will be flowing through you out to everyone on the planet, you'll be blessed by this experience as well.

Many have received the cards in the mail or in the Reiki News Magazine while others have downloaded them from our web site. If you would like additional copies of the cards, please download them using this link and print as many copies as you can use. Please feel free to give them to your friends. Also, forward this email to anyone you feel would like to take part in the meditation.

Note: This is a larger file and it may take several
minutes for it to open, so please be patient.

When printing the cards from this file, print page 2 first, then place this page in your printer and print the image of the peace grids on the back.

Thank you for taking part in this group meditation.

Reiki Changed My Life
I was very fortunate to have received my I & II attunements from an excellent teacher, Anna Carlson. I am looking forward to receiving my Master's attunements. Mr. Rand's book, The Healing Touch, is something I reference daily. What a wonderful and helpful book. I now perform treatments on my family regularly.

At first I knew I was meant to be a healer, but was not sure what path I should take. After receiving my attunements, I knew this was my calling. My mother was bed-ridden due to a sore hip. She was once very active and taught martial arts. With her extreme hip pain, more time was spent in bed rather than out in her garden. A couple of weeks after receiving my attunements, I treated my mother. After the first treatment, she was surprised to wake up with very little pain. After a couple more treatments, the pain was no more. Her and my father are now enjoying a cruise to Puerto Rico.

I am popular at my office because I have an incredible knack of ridding my coworkers of their headaches and easing stress. Reiki is a very important part of my life now and I love that I am opening people's consciousness to the wonders of this art. Mr. Rand, thank you for your insightful books and I look forward to reading the Reiki Master's Manual one day soon. Johnny

Stopped Smoking
I saw a friend at a party who had smoked cigarettes for 30 years. She was trying to quit, but the pills she was taking to help her were giving her a headache and she was about to leave the party. I felt sorry for her and asked her if she would like to try Reiki. She said she will try anything.

We arranged to get together and give her a Reiki session and she said she had stopped taking the pills. Another friend, Devaki helped me with the session. I did Aura Clearing and then Devaki and I gave Denise hands on Reiki. After the session, I started distance Reiki and kept contact with Denise. After this, she stopped smoking cigarettes.

It has now been four months and Denise hasn’t smoked a cigarette. She is so thrilled and tells everyone about Reiki. Actually she is taking Reiki One now.

Reiki works. Thanks to you God, to all Reiki teachers and Reiki Practitioners and to William. Reiki Blessings, Aruna Dee

Miraculous Healing
Recently I was requested to send healing to a friend's father who was at death's door and was given his last rites. Many of us, who are friends were called on to pray and send healing. There were some of us in this group who do Reiki. We were told that he underwent surgery and is recovering quickly. My friend's father had what some people close to him say...a miraculous recovery and we agree. Those of us who sent energy were all trained by you William and I believe that links us together in a very special way. In a really powerful and completely whole way because of what you taught and the way you taught it. It was truly magical to participate in this healing for me and I felt jettisoned into an attunement at another level. I would like to talk to you about organizing a group to send out healing to whoever needs it...much like a prayer line. If people can afford a donation to the center wonderful...if not, we could still send to them and give back this gift. I would like to have a committed group of us to channel to people long distance and also maybe to organize a group who would be on call to special situations where healing was needed in person. I would personally volunteer to do this work on an on-call basis and would assist in any way I can to make this project happen. I believe there is a need out there for this. I think it made a huge difference to have all of us from your training and it would be a powerful force in the world for more healing for everyone. I look forward to hearing from you when you can. Namaste' Jan Rapoport

Reiki and Stroke
April, 2005, I had a stroke which paralyzed my left side. I went to the emergency room immediately and received tPA, a clot busting drug. The following day my neighbor, Sue, a Reiki Master came to the hospital and gave me Reiki. While she was doing the treatment my whole body felt a surge of energy and I moved my left fingers for the first time in 24 hours, my brain felt as if it was working with my total body for the first time in 24 hours. Sue gave me Reiki everyday while I was in the hospital and after returning home. I felt it was most beneficial along with rehab for my body to return almost completely back to normal.

August, 2005, I had another stroke affecting my left side and my voice. I received tPA again and my neighbor, Sue, also came to the hospital to give me Reiki everyday I was there. Upon returning home Sue continued Reiki and with rehab I regained almost all of my physical movement on the left side and I can speak again, although it is not with the same volume or sound as before. I wrote several letters to the hospital administration, the person in charge of the stroke section and also to the Volunteer Program. The Hospital uses Reiki Practitioner Volunteers in the Heart Hospital adjacent to the main hospital but to date they have not used Reiki Volunteers in the stroke section. I am presently taking Reiki I and Reiki II and will volunteer at the hospital as soon as I am certified. I feel very strongly that stroke patients benefit greatly from Reiki and the healing energy it provides. Jane
